From low-field Sondheimer oscillations to high-field very large and linear magnetoresistance in a SrTiO$_3$-based two-dimensional electron gas

Quantum materials harbor a cornucopia of exotic transport phenomena challenging our understanding of condensed matter. Among these, a giant, non-saturating linearmagnetoresistance (MR) has been reported in various systems, from Weyl semi-metals to topological insulators. Its origin is often ascribed to unusual band structure effects but it may also be caused by extrinsic sample disorder. Here, we report a very large linear MR in a SrTiO$_3$ two-dimensional electron gas and, by combining transport measurements with electron spectro-microscopy, show that it is caused by nanoscale inhomogeneities that are self-organized during sample growth. Our data also reveal semi-classical Sondheimer oscillations arising from interferences between helicoidal electron trajectories, from which we determine the 2DEG thickness. Our results bring insight into the origin of linear MR in quantum materials, expand the range of functionalities of oxide 2DEGs and suggest exciting routes to explore the interaction of linear MR with features like Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetism, spin texture and in-gap states: Atomic specialization at the surface of oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_3$

Motivated by recent spin- and angular-resolved photoemission (SARPES) measurements performed on the two-dimensional electronic states confined near the (001) surface of SrTiO$_3$ in the presence of oxygen vacancies, we explore their spin structure by means of ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of slabs. Relativistic nonmagnetic DFT calculations display Rashba-like spin winding with a splitting of a few meV and when surface magnetism on the Ti ions is in- cluded, bands become spin-split with an energy difference ~100 meV at the $Γ$ point, consistent with SARPES findings. While magnetism tends to suppress the effects of the relativistic Rashba interaction, signatures of it are still clearly visible in terms of complex spin textures. Furthermore, we observe an atomic specialization phenomenon, namely, two types of electronic contributions: one is from Ti atoms neighboring the oxygen vacancies that acquire rather large magnetic moments and mostly create in-gap states; another comes from the partly polarized t$_{2g}$ itinerant electrons of Ti atoms lying further away from the oxygen vacancy, which form the two-dimensional electron system and are responsible for the Rashba spin winding and the spin splitting at the Fermi surface.

Doping Dependence of Gap Inhomogeneities at Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ Surfaces

We study the inhomogeneity of the electronic pairing gap observed by STM near the surface of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ to be correlated with interstitial O defects. We treat the problem in a slave boson mean field theory of a disordered $t-t^{\prime}-J$ model, and identify three aspects of the O defects related to the inhomogeneity: (1)the superexchange interaction is locally enhanced in their vicinity, which enhances the local pairing gap and reduces the coherence peak; (2)they donate holes into CuO$_2$ plane, which reduces the spinon density of states of and hence the average gap at large doping; (3)holes are locally attracted to the vicinity of oxygen defects, which causes impurity bound state and further reduces the coherence peak. The interplay of these mechanisms explains simultaneously the locally enhanced pairing gap around oxygen defects, and the reduction of average gap as increasing oxygen concentration.

Thermal Fluctuations in d-wave Layered Superconductors

We study the thermal fluctuations of anisotropic order parameters (OP) in layered superconductors. In particular, for copper oxides and a d-wave OP, we present some experimental consequences of fluctuations in the direction normal to the layers. It is shown that the c-axis penetration depth $λ_c$ can have a "disorder-like" quadratic temperature dependence at low temperature. The fluctuations are analyzed in the framework of a Lawrence-Doniach model with an isotropic Fermi surface. Anisotropies pin the orientation of the OP to the crystallographic axes of the lattice. Then we study an extended t-J model that fits Fermi suface data of bilayers $YBCO$ and $BSCCO$. This leads to a d-wave OP with two possible orientations and, including the thermal fluctuations, yields the announced temperature dependence of $λ_c$. Furthermore a reservoir layer is introduced. It implies a finite density of states at the Fermi energy which is successfully compared to conductance and specific heat measurements.
