CFT correlators, ${\cal W}$-algebras and Generalized Catalan Numbers

In two spacetime dimensions the Virasoro heavy-heavy-light-light (HHLL) vacuum block in a certain limit is governed by the Catalan numbers. The equation for their generating function can be generalized to a differential equation which the logarithm of the block satisfies. We show that a similar story holds for the HHLL ${\cal W}_N$ vacuum blocks, where a suitable generalization of the Catalan numbers plays the main role. Moreover, the ${\cal W}_N$ blocks have the same form as the stress tensor sector of HHLL near lightcone conformal correlators in $2(N-1)$ spacetime dimensions. In the latter case the Catalan numbers are generalized to the numbers of linear extensions of certain partially ordered sets.

Stress Tensor Sector of Conformal Correlators

An important part of a CFT four-point function, the stress tensor sector, comprises the exchanges of the stress tensor and its composites. The OPE coefficients of these multi-stress tensor operators and consequently, the complete stress tensor sector of four-point functions in CFTs with a large central charge, can be determined by computing a heavy-heavy-light-light correlator. We show how one can make substantial progress in this direction by bootstrapping a certain ansatz for the stress tensor sector of the correlator, iteratively computing the OPE coefficients of multi-stress tensor operators with increasing twist. Some parameters are not fixed by the bootstrap - they correspond to the OPE coefficients of multi-stress tensors with spin zero and two. We further show that in holographic CFTs one can use the phase shift computed in the dual gravitational theory to reduce the set of undetermined parameters to the OPE coefficients of multi-stress tensors with spin zero. Finally, we verify some of these results using the Lorentzian OPE inversion formula and comment on its regime of applicability.

Leading Multi-Stress Tensors and Conformal Bootstrap

Near lightcone correlators are dominated by operators with the lowest twist. We consider the contributions of such leading lowest twist multi-stress tensor operators to a heavy-heavy-light-light correlator in a CFT of any even dimensionality with a large central charge. An infinite number of such operators contribute, but their sum is described by a simple ansatz. We show that the coefficients in this ansatz can be determined recursively, thereby providing an operational procedure to compute them. This is achieved by bootstrapping the corresponding near lightcone correlator: conformal data for any minimal-twist determines that for the higher minimal-twist and so on. To illustrate this procedure in four spacetime dimensions we determine the contributions of double- and triple-stress tensors. We compute the OPE coefficients; whenever results are available in the literature, we observe complete agreement. We also compute the contributions of double-stress tensors in six spacetime dimensions and determine the corresponding OPE coefficients. In all cases the results are consistent with the exponentiation of the near lightcone correlator. This is similar to the situation in two spacetime dimensions for the Virasoro vacuum block.

Subleading Eikonal, AdS/CFT and Double Stress Tensors

The eikonal phase which determines the Regge limit of the gravitational scattering amplitude of a light particle off a heavy one in Minkowski spacetimes admits an expansion in the ratio of the Schwarzschild radius of the heavy particle to the impact parameter. Such an eikonal phase in AdS spacetimes of any dimensionality has been computed to all orders and reduces to the corresponding Minkowski result when both the impact parameter and the Schwarzschild radius are much smaller than the AdS radius. The leading term in the AdS eikonal phase can be reproduced in the dual CFT by a single stress tensor conformal block, but the subleading term is a result of an infinite sum of the double stress tensor contributions. We provide a closed form expression for the OPE coefficients of the leading twist double stress tensors in four spacetime dimensions and perform the sum to compute the corresponding lightcone behavior of a heavy-heavy-light-light CFT correlator. The resulting compact expression passes a few nontrivial independent checks. In particular, it agrees with the subleading eikonal phase at large impact parameter.

Fermion Dipole Moment and Holography

In the background of a charged AdS black hole, we consider a Dirac particle endowed with an arbitrary magnetic dipole moment. For non-zero charge and dipole coupling of the bulk fermion, we find that the dual boundary theory can be plagued with superluminal modes. Requiring consistency of the dual CFT amounts to constraining the strength of the dipole coupling by an upper bound. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for the physics of holographic non-Fermi liquids.

Conformal Blocks and Negativity at Large Central Charge

We consider entanglement negativity for two disjoint intervals in 1+1 dimensional CFT in the limit of large central charge. As the two intervals get close, the leading behavior of negativity is given by the logarithm of the conformal block where a set of approximately null descendants appears in the intermediate channel. We compute this quantity numerically and compare with existing analytic methods which provide perturbative expansion in powers of the cross-ratio.

Higher-Spin Modes in a Domain-Wall Universe

We find a consistent set of equations of motion and constraints for massive higher-spin fluctuations in a gravitational background, required of certain characteristic properties but more general than constant curvature space. Of particular interest among such geometries is a thick domain wall--a smooth version of the Randall-Sundrum metric. Apart from the graviton zero mode, the brane accommodates quasi-bound massive states of higher spin contingent on the bulk mass. We estimate the mass and lifetime of these higher-spin resonances, which may appear as metastable dark matter in a braneworld universe.

Marginal Deformations of N=4 SYM and Open vs. Closed String Parameters

We make precise the connection between the generic Leigh--Strassler deformation of N=4 SYM and noncommutativity. We construct an appropriate noncommutativity matrix, which turns out to define a nonassociative deformation. Viewing this noncommutativity matrix as part of the set of open string data which characterize the deformation and mapping them to the closed string data (e.g. metric and B--field), we are able to construct the gravity dual and the the correponding deformed flat space geometry up to third order in the deformation parameter.

Holographic Constraints on a Vector Boson

We show that holography poses non-trivial restrictions on various couplings of an interacting field. For a vector boson in the AdS Reissner-Nordstrom background, the dual boundary theory is pathological unless its electromagnetic and gravitational multipole moments are constrained. Among others, a generic dipole moment afflicts the dual CFT with superluminal modes, whose remedy bounds the gyromagnetic ratio in a range around the natural value g=2. We discuss the CFT implications of our results, and argue that similar considerations can shed light on how massive higher-spin fields couple to electromagnetism and gravity.

On Holographic Entanglement Entropy of Charged Matter

We study holographic entanglement entropy in the background of charged dilatonic black holes which can be viewed as holographic duals of certain finite density states of N=4 super Yang-Mills. These charged black holes are distinguished in that they have vanishing ground state entropy. The entanglement entropy for a slab experiences a second order phase transition as the thickness of the slab is varied, while the entanglement entropy for a sphere is a smooth function of the radius. This suggests that the second scale introduced by the anisotropy of the slab plays an important role in driving the phase transition. In both cases we do not observe any logarithmic violation of the area law indicative of hidden Fermi surfaces. We investigate how these results are affected by the inclusion of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk gravitational action. We also observe that such addition to the bulk action does not change the logarithmic violation of the area law in the backgrounds with hyperscaling violation.

Holographic Entanglement Entropy in Lovelock Gravities

We study entanglement entropies of simply connected surfaces in field theories dual to Lovelock gravities. We consider Gauss-Bonnet and cubic Lovelock gravities in detail. In the conformal case the logarithmic terms in the entanglement entropy are governed by the conformal anomalies of the CFT; we verify that the holographic calculations are consistent with this property. We also compute the holographic entanglement entropy of a slab in the Gauss-Bonnet examples dual to relativistic and non-relativistic CFTs and discuss its properties. Finally, we discuss features of the entanglement entropy in the backgrounds dual to renormalization group flows between fixed points and comment on the implications for a possible c-theorem in four spacetime dimensions.

AdS_7/CFT_6, Gauss-Bonnet Gravity, and Viscosity Bound

We study the relation between the causality and the positivity of energy bounds in Gauss-Bonnet gravity in AdS_7 background and find a precise agreement. Requiring the group velocity of metastable states to be bounded by the speed of light places a bound on the value of Gauss-Bonnet coupling. To find the positivity of energy constraints we compute the parameters which determine the angular distribution of the energy flux in terms of three independent coefficients specifying the three-point function of the stress-energy tensor. We then relate the latter to the Weyl anomaly of the six-dimensional CFT and compute the anomaly holographically. The resulting upper bound on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling coincides with that from causality and results in a new bound on viscosity/entropy ratio.

Energy Flux Positivity and Unitarity in CFTs

We show that in most conformal field theories the condition of the energy flux positivity, proposed by Hofman and Maldacena, is equivalent to the absence of ghosts. At finite temperature and large energy and momenta, the two-point functions of the stress energy tensor develop lightlike poles. The residues of the poles can be computed, as long as the only spin two conserved current, which appears in the stress energy tensor OPE and acquires nonvanishing expectation value at finite temperature, is the stress energy tensor. The condition for the residues to stay positive and the theory to remain ghost free is equivalent to the condition of positivity of energy flux.

Holographic Lovelock Gravities and Black Holes

We study holographic implications of Lovelock gravities in AdS spacetimes. For a generic Lovelock gravity in arbitrary spacetime dimensions we formulate the existence condition for asymptotically AdS black holes. We consider small fluctuations around these black holes and determine the constraint on Lovelock parameters by demanding causality of the boundary theory. For the case of cubic Lovelock gravity in seven spacetime dimensions we compute the holographic Weyl anomaly and determine the three point functions of the stress energy tensor in the boundary CFT. Remarkably, these correlators happen to satisfy the same relation as the one imposed by supersymmetry. We then compute the energy flux; requiring it to be positive is shown to be completely equivalent to requiring causality of the finite temperature CFT dual to the black hole. These constraints are not stringent enough to place any positive lower bound on the value of viscosity. Finally, we conjecture an expression for the energy flux valid for any Lovelock theory in arbitrary dimensions.

Supersymmetry Constraints in Holographic Gravities

Supersymmetric higher derivative gravities define superconformal field theories via the AdS/CFT correspondence. From the boundary theory viewpoint, supersymmetry implies a relation between the coefficients which determine the three point function of the stress energy tensor which can be tested in the dual gravitational theory. We use this relation to formulate a necessary condition for the supersymmetrization of higher derivative gravitational terms. We then show that terms quadratic in the Riemann tensor do not present obstruction to supersymmetrization, while generic higher order terms do. For technical reasons, we restrict the discussion to seven dimensions where the obstruction to supersymmetrization can be formulated in terms of the coefficients of Weyl anomaly, which can be computed holographically.

Notes on Properties of Holographic Matter

Probe branes with finite worldvolume electric flux in the background created by a stack of Dp branes describe holographically strongly interacting fundamental matter at finite density. We identify two quantities whose leading low temperature behavior is independent of the dimensionality of the probe branes: specific heat and DC conductivity. This behavior can be inferred from the dynamics of the fundamental strings which provide a good description of the probe branes in the regime of low temperatures and finite densities. We also comment on the speed of sound on the branes and the temperature dependence of DC conductivity at vanishing charge density.

Half-BPS Geometries and Thermodynamics of Free Fermions

Solutions of type IIB supergravity which preserve half of the supersymmetries have a dual description in terms of free fermions, as elucidated by the "bubbling AdS" construction of Lin, Lunin and Maldacena. In this paper we study the half-BPS geometry associated with a gas of free fermions in thermodynamic equilibrium obeying the Fermi-Dirac distribution. We consider both regimes of low and high temperature. In the former case, we present a detailed computation of the ADM mass of the supergravity solution and find agreement with the thermal energy of the fermions. The solution has a naked null singularity and, by general arguments, is expected to develop a finite area horizon once stringy corrections are included. By introducing a stretched horizon, we propose a way to match the entropy of the fermions with the entropy of the geometry in the low temperature regime. In the opposite limit of high temperature, the solution resembles a dilute gas of D3 branes. Also in this case the ADM mass of the geometry agrees with the thermal energy of the fermions.
