Ion-induced interactions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid

We investigate the physics of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of spin-polarized fermions superimposed on an ion chain. This compound system features (attractive) long-range interspecies interactions. By means of density matrix renormalization group techniques we compute the Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter and speed of sound as a function of the relative atom/ion density and the two quantum defect parameters, namely, the even and odd short-range phases which characterize the short-range part of the atom-ion polarization potential. The presence of ions is found to allow critical tuning of the atom-atom interaction, and the properties of the system are found to depend significantly on the short-range phases due to the atom-ion interaction. These latter dependencies can be controlled, for instance, by manipulating the ions' internal state. This allows modification of the static properties of the quantum liquid via external driving of the ionic impurities.

Universal duality transformations in interacting one-dimensional quantum systems

One-dimensional quantum systems admit duality relations that put hard core spinless bosons and fermions in one-to-one correspondence via Girardeau's mapping theorem. The simplest models of soft bosons interacting via zero-range potentials can also be mapped onto dual interacting fermions. However, a systematic approach to one-dimensional statistical transmutation for arbitrary low-energy interactions in the spinless and spinful or multicomponent cases has remained elusive. I develop a general theory of local unitary transformations between one-dimensional quantum systems of bosons and fermions with arbitrary spin or internal structure, single-particle dispersion -- including non-relativistic, relativistic or otherwise -- and low-energy interactions in the universal regime. These transformations generate families of new duality relations and models that relate the strong and weak coupling limits of the respective dual theories.

Universal Short Range Correlations in Bosonic Helium Clusters

Short-range correlations in bosonic Helium clusters, composed of $^4$He atoms, are studied utilizing the generalized contact formalism. The emergence of universal $n$-body short range correlations is formulated and demonstrated numerically via Monte Carlo simulations. The values of the $n$-particle contacts are evaluated for $n\le5$. In the thermodynamic limit, the two-body contact is extracted from available experimental measurements of the static structure factor of liquid $^4$He at high momenta, and found in a good agreement with the value extracted from our calculations.

Few-Body Route to One-Dimensional Quantum Liquids

Gapless many-body quantum systems in one spatial dimension are universally described by the Luttinger liquid effective theory at low energies. Essentially, only two parameters enter the effective low-energy description, namely the speed of sound and the Luttinger parameter. These are highly system dependent and their calculation requires accurate non-perturbative solutions of the many-body problem. Here, we present a simple method that only uses collisional information to extract the low-energy properties of these systems. Our results are in remarkable agreement with available results for integrable models and from large scale Monte Carlo simulations of one-dimensional helium and hydrogen isotopes. Moreover, we estimate theoretically the critical point for spinodal decomposition in one-dimensional helium-4, and show that the exponent governing the divergence of the Luttinger parameter near the critical point is exactly 1/2, in excellent agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

Unitary fermions and Luscher's formula on a crystal

We consider the low-energy particle-particle scattering properties in a periodic simple cubic crystal. In particular, we investigate the relation between the two-body scattering length and the energy shift experienced by the lowest-lying unbound state when this is placed in a periodic finite box. We introduce a continuum model for s-wave contact interactions that respects the symmetry of the Brillouin zone in its regularisation and renormalisation procedures, and corresponds to the na{ï}ve continuum limit of the Hubbard model. The energy shifts are found to be identical to those obtained in the usual spherically symmetric renormalisation scheme upon resolving an important subtlety regarding the cutoff procedure. We then particularize to the Hubbard model, and find that for large finite lattices the results are identical to those obtained in the continuum limit. The results reported here are valid in the weak, intermediate and unitary limits, and can be used for the extraction of scattering information ,via exact diagonalisation or Monte Carlo methods, of two-body systems in realistic periodic lattices.

Effective field theory of interactions on the lattice

We consider renormalization of effective field theory interactions by discretizing the continuum on a tight-binding lattice. After studying the one-dimensional problem, we address s-wave collisions in three dimensions and relate the bare lattice coupling constants to the continuum coupling constants. Our method constitutes a very simple avenue for the systematic renormalization in effective field theory, and is especially useful as the number of interaction parameters increases.

Elementary excitations of chiral Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the collective modes of a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to an optically induced density-dependent gauge potential. The corresponding interacting gauge theory lacks Galilean invariance, yielding an exotic superfluid state. The nonlinear dynamics in the presence of a current nonlinearity and an external harmonic trap are found to give rise to dynamics which violate Kohn's theorem; where the frequency of the dipole mode strongly depends on the strength of the mass current in the gas. The linearised spectrum reveals how the centre of mass and shape oscillations are coupled, whereas in the strongly nonlinear regime the dynamics is irregular.

Fermionic Luttinger liquids from a microscopic perspective

We consider interacting one-dimensional, spinless Fermi gases, whose low-energy properties are described by Luttinger liquid theory. We perform a systematic, in-depth analysis of the relation between the macroscopic, phenomenological parameters of Luttinger liquid effective field theory, and the microscopic interactions of the Fermi gas. In particular, we begin by explaining how to model effective interactions in one dimension, which we then apply to the main forward scattering channel -- the interbranch collisions -- common to these systems. We renormalise the corresponding interbranch phenomenological constants in favour of scattering phase shifts. Interestingly, our renormalisation procedure shows (i) how Luttinger's model arises in a completely natural way -- and not as a convenient approximation -- from Tomonaga's model, and (ii) the reasons behind the interbranch coupling constant remaining unrenormalised in Luttinger's model. We then consider the so-called intrabranch processes, whose phenomenological coupling constant is known to be fixed by charge conservation, but whose microscopic origin is not well understood. We show that, contrary to general belief and common sense, the intrabranch interactions appearing in Luttinger liquid theory do not correspond to an intrabranch scattering channel, nor an energy shift due to intrabranch interactions, in the microscopic theory. Instead, they are due to interbranch processes. We finally apply our results to a particular example of an exactly solvable model, namely the fermionic dual to the Lieb-Liniger model in the Tonks-Girardeau and super-Tonks-Girardeau regimes.

Multicomponent Strongly Interacting Few-Fermion Systems in One Dimension

The paper examines a trapped one-dimensional system of multicomponent spinless fermions that interact with a zero-range two-body potential. We show that when the repulsion between particles is very large the system can be approached analytically. To illustrate this analytical approach we consider a simple system of three distinguishable particles, which can be addressed experimentally. For this system we show that for infinite repulsion the energy spectrum is sixfold degenerate. We also show that this degeneracy is partially lifted for finitely large repulsion for which we find and describe corresponding wave functions.

Quantized vortices in interacting gauge theories

We consider a two-dimensional weakly interacting ultracold Bose gas whose constituents are two-level atoms. We study the effects of a synthetic density-dependent gauge field that arises from laser-matter coupling in the adiabatic limit with a laser configuration such that the single-particle zero-order vector potential corresponds to a constant synthetic magnetic field. We find a new exotic type of current non-linearity in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation which affects the dynamics of the order parameter of the condensate. We investigate the rotational properties of this system, focusing in particular on the physical conditions that make the nucleation of a quantized vortex in the system energetically favourable with respect to the non rotating solution. We point out that two different physical interpretations can be given to this new non linearity: firstly it can be seen as a local modification of the mean field coupling constant, whose value depends on the angular momentum of the condensate. Secondly, it can be interpreted as a density modulated angular velocity given to the cloud. Looking at the problem from both of these viewpoints, we analyze the physical conditions that make a single vortex state energetically favourable. In the Thomas-Fermi limit, we show that the effect of the new nonlinearity is to induce a rotation to the condensate, where the transition from non-rotating to rotating states depends on the density of the cloud.

Vortex dynamics in superfluids governed by an interacting gauge theory

We study the dynamics of a vortex in a quasi two-dimensional Bose gas consisting of light matter coupled atoms forming two-component pseudo spins. The gas is subject to a density dependent gauge potential, hence governed by an interacting gauge theory, which stems from a collisionally induced detuning between the incident laser frequency and the atomic energy levels. This provides a back-action between the synthetic gauge potential and the matter field. A Lagrangian approach is used to derive an expression for the force acting on a vortex in such a gas. We discuss the similarities between this force and the one predicted by Iordanskii, Lifshitz and Pitaevskii when scattering between a superfluid vortex and the thermal component is taken into account.

Low-energy behaviour of strongly-interacting bosons on a flat-banded lattice above the critical filling factor

Bosons interacting repulsively on a lattice with a flat lowest band energy dispersion may, at sufficiently small filling factors, enter into a Wigner-crystal-like phase. This phase is a consequence of the dispersionless nature of the system, which in turn implies the occurrence of single-particle localised eigenstates. We investigate one of these systems - the sawtooth lattice - filled with strongly repulsive bosons at filling factors infinitesimally above the critical point where the crystal phase is no longer the ground state. We find, the the hard-core limit, that the crystal retains its structure in all but one of its cells, where it is broken. The broken cell corresponds to an exotic kind of repulsively bound state, which becomes delocalised. We investigate the excitation spectrum of the system analytically and find that the bound state behaves as a single particle hopping on an effective lattice with reduced periodicity, and is therefore gapless. Thus, the addition of a single particle to a flat-banded system at critical filling is found to be enough to make kinetic behaviour manifest.

Non-Galilean response of Rashba coupled Fermi gases

We consider the effect of a momentum kick on the ground state of a non-interacting two-dimensional Fermi gas subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Although the total momentum is a constant of motion, the gas does not obey the rules of Galilean relativity. Upon imprinting a small overall velocity to the non-interacting gas, we find that the Fermi sea is deformed in a non-trivial way. We also consider a weakly repulsive Fermi gas, and find, from its Hartree shift, that the total ground state of the system may change into a deformed, finite momentum ground state as the repulsion is increased beyond a critical value, without the need of any external Zeeman fields. We also discuss possible experimental signatures of these effects.

On the Josephson effect in a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a density dependent gauge potential

We investigate the coherent dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well, subject to a density dependent gauge potential. Further, we derive the nonlinear Josephson equations that allow us to understand the many-body system in terms of a classical Hamiltonian that describes the motion of a nonrigid pendulum with an initial angular offset. Finally we analyze the phase-space trajectories of the system, and describe how the self-trapping is affected by the presence of an interacting gauge potential.

Exact equivalence between one-dimensional Bose gases interacting via hard-sphere and zero-range potentials

We prove the equivalence between the hard-sphere Bose gas and a system with momentum-dependent zero-range interactions in one spatial dimension, which we call extended hard-sphere Bose gas. The two-body interaction in the latter model has the advantage of being a regular pseudopotential. The most immediate consequence is the existence of its Fourier transform, permitting the formulation of the problem in momentum space, not possible with the original hard-core interaction. In addition, in the extended system, interactions are defined in terms of the scattering length, positive or negative, identified with the hard-sphere diameter only when it is positive. We are then able to obtain, directly in the thermodynamic limit, the ground state energy of the strongly repulsive Lieb-Liniger gas and, more importantly, the energy of the lowest-lying super Tonks-Girardeau gas state with finite, strongly attractive interactions, in perturbation theory from the novel extended hard-sphere Bose gas. Tan relations involving the large-momentum behavior of the Lieb-Liniger gas are also derived, and then applied to the super Tonks-Girardeau gas within our perturbative approach.

Single-branch theory of ultracold Fermi gases with artificial Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We consider interacting ultracold fermions subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We construct a single-branch interacting theory for the Fermi gas when the system is dilute enough so that the positive helicity branch is not occupied at all in the non-interacting ground state. We show that the theory is renormalizable in perturbation theory and therefore yields a model of polarized fermions that avoids a multi-channel treatment of the problem. Our results open the path towards a much more straightforward approach to the many-body physics of cold atoms subject to artificial vector potentials.

Universal properties of Fermi gases in arbitrary dimensions

We consider spin-1/2 Fermi gases in arbitrary, integer or non-integer spatial dimensions, interacting via a Dirac delta potential. We first generalize the method of Tan's distributions and implement short-range boundary conditions to arbitrary dimension and we obtain a set of universal relations for the Fermi gas. Three-dimensional scattering under very general conditions of transversal confinement is described by an effectively reduced-dimensional scattering length, which we show depends on the three-dimensional scattering length in a universal way. Our formula for non-integer dimensions interpolates between the known results in integer dimensions 1, 2 and 3. Without any need to solve the associated multichannel scattering problem, we find that confinement-induced resonances occur in all dimensions different from D=2, while reduced-dimensional contacts, related to the tails of the momentum distributions, are connected to the three-dimensional contact by a correction factor of purely geometric origin.

Lattice oscillator model, scattering theory and a many-body problem

We propose a model for the quantum harmonic oscillator on a discrete lattice which can be written in supersymmetric form, in contrast with the more direct discretization of the harmonic oscillator. Its ground state is easily found to be annihilated by the annihilation operator defined here, and its excitation spectrum is obtained numerically. The versatility of the model is then used to calculate, in a simple way, the generalized position-dependent scattering length for a particle colliding with a single static impurity in a periodic potential and the exact ground state of an interacting many-body problem in a one-dimensional ring.

Quasi-one-dimensional scattering in a discrete model

We study quasi-one-dimensional scattering of one and two particles with short-range interactions on a discrete lattice model in two dimensions. One of the directions is tightly confined by an arbitrary trapping potential. We obtain the collisional properties of these systems both at finite and zero Bloch quasi- momenta, considering as well finite sizes and transversal traps that support a continuum of states. This is made straightforward by using the exact ansatz for the quasi-one-dimensional states from the beginning. In the more interesting case of genuine two-particle scattering, we find that more than one confinement-induced resonance appear due to the non-separability of the center-of-mass and relative coordinates on the lattice. This is done by solving its corresponding Lippmann- Schwinger-like equation. We characterize the effective one-dimensional interaction and compare it with a model that includes only the effect of the dominant, broadest resonance, which amounts to a single-pole approximation for the interaction coupling constant.

Tan's distributions and Fermi-Huang pseudopotential in momentum space

The long-standing question of finding the momentum representation for the s-wave zero-range interaction in three spatial dimensions is here solved. This is done by expressing a certain distribution, introduced in a formal way by S. Tan [Ann. Phys. 323, 2952 (2008)], explicitly. The resulting form of the Fourier-transformed pseudopotential remains very simple. Operator forms for the so-called Tan's selectors which, together with Fermi-Huang pseudopotential, largely simplify the derivation of Tan's universal relations for the Fermi gas, are here derived and are also very simple. A momentum cut-off version of the pseudopotential is also provided, and with this no apparent contradiction with the notion of integrals in Tan's methods is left. The equivalence, even at the intermediate step level, between the pseudopotential approach and momentum-space renormalization of the bare Dirac delta interaction is then shown by using the explicit form of the cut-off pseudopotential.

Universal relations for the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Fermi gas with contact interactions

We present universal relations for a two-dimensional Fermi gas with pairwise contact interactions. The derivation of these relations is made possible by obtaining the explicit form of a generalized function -- selector -- in the momentum representation. The selector implements the short-distance boundary condition between two fermions in a straightforward manner, and leads to simple derivations of the universal relations, in the spirit of Tan's original method for the three-dimensional gas.

Frustrated collisions and unconventional pairing on a quantum superlattice

We solve the problem of scattering and binding of two spin-1/2 fermions on a one-dimensional superlattice with a period of twice the lattice spacing analytically. We find the exact bound states and the scattering states, consisting of a generalized Bethe ansatz augmented with an extra scattering product due to "asymptotic" degeneracy. If a Bloch band is doubly occupied, the extra wave can be a bound state in the continuum corresponding to a single-particle interband transition. In all other cases, it corresponds to a quasi-momentum changing, frustrated collision.

Lattice two-body problem with arbitrary finite range interactions

We study the exact solution of the two-body problem on a tight-binding one-dimensional lattice, with pairwise interaction potentials which have an arbitrary but finite range. We show how to obtain the full spectrum, the bound and scattering states and the "low-energy" solutions by very efficient and easy-to-implement numerical means. All bound states are proven to be characterized by roots of a polynomial whose degree depends linearly on the range of the potential, and we discuss the connections between the number of bound states and the scattering lengths. "Low-energy" resonances can be located with great precission with the methods we introduce. Further generalizations to include more exotic interactions are also discussed.

preprint2009arXiv

Three-body bound states in a lattice

We pursue three-body bound states in a one-dimensional tight-binding lattice described by the Bose-Hubbard model with strong on-site interaction. Apart from the simple strongly-bound "trimer" state corresponding to all three particles occupying the same lattice site, we find two novel kinds of weakly-bound trimers with energies below and above the continuum of scattering states of a single particle ("monomer") and a bound particle pair ("dimer"). The corresponding binding mechanism can be inferred from an effective Hamiltonian in the strong-coupling regime which contains an exchange interaction between the monomer and dimer. In the limit of very strong on-site interaction, the exchange-bound trimers attain a universal value of the binding energy. These phenomena can be observed with cold atoms in optical lattices.
