Some recent results on contact or point supported potentials

We introduced some contact potentials that can be written as a linear combination of the Dirac delta and its first derivative, the $δ$-$δ'$ interaction. After a simple general presentation in one dimension, we briefly discuss a one dimensional periodic potential with a $δ$-$δ'$ interaction at each node. The dependence of energy bands with the parameters (coefficients of the deltas) can be computed numerically. We also study the $δ$-$δ'$ interaction supported on spheres of arbitrary dimension. The spherical symmetry of this model allows us to obtain rigorous conclusions concerning the number of bound states in terms of the parameters and the dimension. Finally, a $δ$-$δ'$ interaction is used to approximate a potential of wide use in nuclear physics, and estimate the total number of bound states as well as the behaviour of some resonance poles with the lowest energy.

The Birman-Schwinger Operator for a Parabolic Quantum Well in a Zero-Thickness Layer in the Presence of a Two-Dimensional Attractive Gaussian Impurity

In this note we consider a quantum mechanical particle moving inside an infinitesimally thin layer constrained by a parabolic well in the $x$-direction and, moreover, in the presence of an impurity modelled by an attractive Gaussian potential. We investigate the Birman-Schwinger operator associated to a model assuming the presence of a Gaussian impurity inside the layer and prove that such an integral operator is Hilbert-Schmidt, which allows the use of the modified Fredholm determinant in order to compute the bound states created by the impurity. Furthermore, we consider the case where the Gaussian potential degenerates to a $δ$-potential in the $x$-direction and a Gaussian potential in the $y$-direction. We construct the corresponding self-adjoint Hamiltonian and prove that it is the limit in the norm resolvent sense of a sequence of corresponding Hamiltonians with suitably scaled Gaussian potentials. Satisfactory bounds on the ground state energies of all Hamiltonians involved are exhibited.

Approximate solutions of one dimensional systems with fractional derivative

The fractional calculus is useful to model non-local phenomena. We construct a method to evaluate the fractional Caputo derivative by means of a simple explicit quadratic segmentary interpolation. This method yields to numerical resolution of ordinary fractional differential equations. Due to the non-locality of the fractional derivative, we may establish an equivalence between fractional oscillators and ordinary oscillators with a dissipative term.

The Infinite Square Well with a Point Interaction: A Discussion on the Different Parametrizations

The construction of Dirac delta type potentials has been achieved with the use of the theory of self adjoint extensions of non-self adjoint formally Hermitian (symmetric) operators. The application of this formalism to investigate the possible self adjoint extensions of the one dimensional kinematic operator $K=-d^2/dx^2$ on the infinite square well potential is quite illustrative and has been given elsewhere. This requires the definition and use of four independent real parameters, which relate the boundary values of the wave functions at the walls. By means of a different approach, that fixes matching conditions at the origin for the wave functions, it is possible to define a perturbation of the type $aδ(x)+bδ'(x)$, thus depending on two parameters, on the infinite square well. The objective of this paper is to investigate whether these two approaches are compatible in the sense that perturbations like $aδ(x)+bδ'(x)$ can be fixed and determined using the first approach.

The one dimensional infinite square well with variable mass

We introduce a numerical method to obtain approximate eigenvalues for some problems of Sturm-Liouville type. As an application, we consider an infinite square well in one dimension in which the mass is a function of the position. Two situations are studied, one in which the mass is a differentiable function of the position depending on a parameter $b$. In the second one the mass is constant except for a discontinuity at some point. When the parameter $b$ goes to infinity, the function of the mass converges to the situation described in the second case. One shows that the energy levels vary very slowly with $b$ and that in the limit as $b$ goes to infinity, we recover the energy levels for the second situation.

Time Asymmetric Quantum Mechanics

The meaning of time asymmetry in quantum physics is discussed. On the basis of a mathematical theorem, the Stone--von Neumann theorem, the solutions of the dynamical equations, the Schrödinger equation (1) for states or the Heisenberg equation (6a) for observables are given by a unitary group. Dirac kets require the concept of a RHS (rigged Hilbert space) of Schwartz functions; for this kind of RHS a mathematical theorem also leads to time symmetric group evolution. Scattering theory suggests to distinguish mathematically between states (defined by a preparation apparatus) and observables (defined by a registration apparatus (detector)). If one requires that scattering resonances of width $Γ$ and exponentially decaying states of lifetime $τ=\frac{\hbar}Γ$ should be the same physical entities (for which there is sufficient evidence) one is led to a pair of RHS's of Hardy functions and connected with it, to a semigroup time evolution $t_{0}\leq t<\infty$, with the puzzling result that there is a quantum mechanical beginning of time, just like the big bang time for the universe, when it was a quantum system. The decay of quasi-stable particles is used to illustrate this quantum mechanical time asymmetry. From the analysis of these processes, we show that the properties of rigged Hilbert spaces of Hardy functions are suitable for a formulation of time asymmetry in quantum mechanics.

Measurements and confluence in quantum lambda calculi with explicit qubits

This paper demonstrates how to add a measurement operator to quantum lambda-calculi. A proof of the consistency of the semantics is given through a proof of confluence presented in a sufficiently general way to allow this technique to be used for other languages. The method described here may be applied to probabilistic rewrite systems in general, and to add measurement to more complex languages such as QML or Lineal, which is the subject of further research.
