Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study of the Spin Dynamics in the Breathing Pyrochlore System LiGa0.95In0.05Cr4O8

The A-site ordered chromate spinels LiGa1-xInxCr4O8 host a network of size-alternating spin-3/2 Cr3+ tetrahedra known as a 'breathing' pyrochlore lattice. For the x=0.05 composition, the complex magneto-structural ordering observed in the parent x=0 material is replaced by a single transition at Tf=11 K, ascribed to the collinear nematic order caused by strong spin-lattice coupling. We present here an inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin dynamics in this composition. Above Tf , the dynamical scattering function S(Q,E) is ungapped and quasi-elastic, similar to undoped LiGaCr4O8. Below Tf , the spectral weight splits between a broad inelastic feature at 5.8 meV and toward the elastic line. The former feature can be ascribed to spin precessions within antiferromagnetic loops, lifted to finite energy by the effective biquadratic spin-lattice term in the spin Hamiltonian.

Ultralow thermal conductivity from transverse acoustic phonon suppression in distorted crystalline α-MgAgSb

Low thermal conductivity is favorable for preserving the temperature gradient between the two ends of a thermoelectric material in order to ensure continuous electron current generation. In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic in PbTe and SnSe and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder in AgCrSe2 and CuCrSe2, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phonon-anharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the compound's intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in α-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

Magnon-phonon coupling and two-magnon continuum in two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO2

CuCrO2 is a manifestation of a two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet which exhibits an incommensurate noncollinear magnetic structure similar to a classical 120 degree ordering. Using the inelastic neutron scattering technique, direct evidence of a magnon-phonon coupling in CuCrO2 is revealed via the mixed magnon-phonon character of the excitation mode at 12.5 meV as well as a minimum at the zone boundary. A simple model Hamiltonian that incorporates an exchange striction type magnon-phonon coupling reproduces the observed features accurately. Also, continuum excitations originating from the interaction between quasiparticles are observed with strong intensity at the zone boundary. These features of the magnetic excitations are key to an understanding of the emergent excitations in noncollinear antiferromagnetic compounds.

Spontaneous decays of magneto-elastic excitations in noncollinear antiferromagnet (Y,Lu)MnO3

When magnons and phonons, the fundamental quasiparticles of the solid, are coupled to one another, they form a new hybrid quasi-particle, leading to novel phenomena and interesting applications. Despite its wide-ranging importance, however, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian is rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour as well as intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in noncollinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon-phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon-phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO3 and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling term required to produce it. Our work has wide implications for understanding of the spin-phonon coupling and the resulting excitations of the broad classes of noncollinear magnets.

Hexagonal RMnO$_3$: a model system for 2D triangular lattice antiferromagnets

The hexagonal RMnO$_3$ (h-RMnO$_3$) are multiferroic materials, which exhibit the coexistence of a magnetic order and ferroelectricity. Their distinction is in their geometry that both results in an unusual mechanism to break inversion symmetry, and also produces a 2D triangular lattice of Mn spins, which is subject to geometrical magnetic frustration due to the antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest neighbour Mn ions. This unique combination makes the h-RMnO$_3$ a model system to test ideas of spin-lattice coupling, particularly when the both the improper ferroelectricity and the Mn trimerisation that appears to determine the symmetry of the magnetic structure arise from the same structure distortion. In this review, we demonstrate how the use of both neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques have been essential to paint this comprehensive and coherent picture of the h-RMnO$_3$.

A Mean Field Model for the Quadrupolar Phases of UPd$_3$

UPd$_3$ is known to exhibit four antiferroquadrupolar ordered phases at low temperatures. We report measurements of the magnetisation and magnetostriction of single crystal UPd$_3$, along the principal symmetry directions, in fields up to 33 T. These results have been combined with recent inelastic neutron and x-ray resonant scattering measurements to construct a mean field model of UPd$_3$ including up to fourth nearest neighbour interactions. In particular we find that anisotropic quadrupolar interactions must be included in order to explain the low temperature structures derived from the scattering data.

Structure and spin dynamics of multiferroric BiFeO$_3$

Multiferroic materials have attracted much interest due to the unusual coexistence of ferroelectric and (anti-)ferromagnetic ground states in a single compound. They offer an exciting platform for new physics and potentially novel devices. BiFeO$_3$ is one of the most celebrated of multiferroic materials with highly desirable properties. It is the only known room-temperature multiferroic with $T_\mathrm{C}\approx 1100~ \mathrm{K}$ and $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 650~\mathrm{K}$, and exhibits one of the largest spontaneous electric polarisation, $P\approx 80~μ\mathrm{C/cm}^2$. At the same time, it has a magnetic cycloid structure with an extremely long period of 630~Å, which arises from a competition between the usual symmetric exchange interaction and antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. There is also an intriguing interplay between the DM interaction and the single ion anisotropy. In this review, we have tried to paint a complete picture of bulk BiFeO$_3$ by summarising the structural and dynamical properties of both spin and lattice parts, and their magneto-electric coupling.

Successive spin-flop transitions of Neel-type antiferromagnet Li$_2$MnO$_3$ single crystal with honeycomb-lattice

We have carried out high magnetic field studies of single-crystalline Li$_2$MnO$_3$, a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet. Its magnetic phase diagram was mapped out using magnetization measurements at applied fields up to 35 T. Our results show that it undergoes two successive meta-magnetic transitions around 9 T fields applied perpendicular to the ab-plane (along the c*-axis). These phase transitions are completely absent in the magnetization measured with field applied along the ab-plane. In order to understand this magnetic phase diagram, we developed a mean-field model starting from the correct Neel-type magnetic structure, consistent with our single crystal neutron diffraction data at zero field. Our model calculations succeeded in explaining the two meta-magnetic transitions that arise when Li$_2$MnO$_3$ enters two different spin-flop phases from the zero field Neel phase.

Temperature-Dependent Interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Single-Ion Anisotropy in Multiferroic BiFeO$_3$

Low-energy magnon excitations in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ were measured in detail as a function of temperature around several Brillouin zone centers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. Unique features around 1 meV are directly associated with the interplay of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a small single-ion anisotropy. The temperature dependence of these and the exchange interactions were determined by fitting the measured magnon dispersion with spin-wave calculations. The spectra best fits an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy and the deduced exchange and anisotropy parameters enable us to determine the anharmonicity of the magnetic cycloid. We then draw a direct connection between the changes in the parameters of spin Hamiltonian with temperature and the physical properties and structural deformations of BiFeO$_3$.

Magnon breakdown in a two dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet of multiferroic LuMnO$_3$

The breakdown of magnons, the quasiparticles of magnetic systems, has rarely been seen. By using an inelastic neutron scattering technique we report the observation of spontaneous magnon decay in multiferroic LuMnO$_3$, a simple two-dimensional Heisenberg triangular lattice antiferromagnet, with large spin, S = 2. The origin of this rare phenomenon lies in the non-vanishing cubic interaction between magnons in the spin Hamiltonian arising from the noncollinear 120$^o$ spin structure. We observed all three key features of the nonlinear effects as theoretically predicted: a roton-like minimum, a flat mode, and a linewidth broadening, in our inelastic neutron scattering measurements of single crystal LuMnO$_3$. Our results show that quasiparticles in a system hitherto thought of as "classical" can indeed break down.
