Tilted black-Si: ~0.45 form-birefringence from sub-wavelength needles

The self-organised conical needles produced by plasma etching of silicon (Si), known as black silicon (b-Si), create a form-birefringent surface texture when etching of Si orientated at angles of $θ_i < 50 - 70^\circ$ (angle between the Si surface and vertical plasma E-field). The height of the needles in the form-birefringent region following 15~min etching was $d\sim 200$ nm and had a 100 $μ$m width of the optical retardance/birefringence, characterised using polariscopy. The height of the b-Si needles corresponds closely to the skin-depth of Si $\simλ/4$ for the visible spectral range. Reflection-type polariscope with a voltage-controlled liquid-crystal retarder is proposed to directly measure the retardance $Δn\times d/λ\approx 0.15$ of the region with tilted b-Si needles. The quantified form birefringence of $Δn = - 0.45$ over $λ= 400-700$~nm spectral window was obtained. Such high values of $Δn$ at visible wavelengths can only be observed in the most birefringence calcite or barium borate as well as in liquid crystals. The replication of b-Si into Ni-shim with high fidelity was also demonstrated and can be used for imprinting of the b-Si nanopattern into other materials.

Nanoscale precision of 3D polymerisation via polarisation control

A systematic analysis of polarization effects in a direct write femtosecond laser 3D lithography is presented. It is newly shown that coupling between linear polarization of the writing light electric field and temperature gradient can be used to fine-tune feature sizes in structuring of photoresists at a nanoscale. The vectorial Debye focusing is used to simulate polarization effects and a controlled variation up to 20% in the linewidth is shown experimentally for the identical axial extent of the polymerised features. The revealed mechanisms are relevant for a wide range of phenomena of light-matter interaction at tight focusing in laser-tweezers and in plasmonic or dielectric sub-wavelength focusing where strong light intensity and thermal gradients coexist.

Polylactic acid-nanocrystalline carbonated hydroxyapatite (PLA-cHAP) composite: preparation and surface topographical structuring with direct laser writing (DLW)

The fabrication of polylactic acid (PLA)-carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHAP) composite material from synthesised phase pure nano-cHAP and melted PLA by mechanical mixing at 220-235°C has been developed in this study. Topographical structuring of PLA-cHAP composite surfaces was performed by direct laser writing (DLW). Microstructured surfaces and the apatite distribution within the composite and formed grooves were evaluated by optical and scanning electron microscopies. The influence of the dopant concentration as well as the laser power and translation velocity on the composite surface morphology is discussed. The synthesis of carbonated hydroxyapatite (cHAP) nanocrystalline powders via wet chemistry approach from calcium acetate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate precursors together with crosslinking and complexing agents of polyethylene glycol, poly(vinyl alcohol) and triethanolamine is also reported. Thermal decomposition of the gels and formation of nanocrystalline cHAP were evaluated by thermal analysis, mass spectrometry and dilatometry measurements. The effect of organic additives on the formation and morphological features of cHAP was investigated. The phase purity and crystallinity of the carbonated apatite powders were evaluated by X-ray diffraction analysis and FT-IR spectroscopy.
