Quantum oscillations of valley current driven by microwave irradiation in transition-metal dichalcogenide/ferromagnet hybrids

We theoretically study spin and valley transport in a transition-metal dichalcogenide(TMDC)/ferromagnet heterostructure under a perpendicular magnetic field. We find that microwave-driven spin pumping induces a valley-selective spin excitation, a direct consequence of the valley-asymmetric Landau levels in the TMDC conduction band. This process generates a pure valley current which, as our central finding, exhibits pronounced quantum oscillations as a function of chemical potential. These oscillations provide a definitive experimental signature of the quantized valley states and establish another pathway to interface spintronics and valleytronics.

Ferromagnetic resonance modulation in $d$-wave superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator bilayer systems

We investigate ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) modulation in $d$-wave superconductor (SC)/ferromagnetic insulator (FI) bilayer systems theoretically. The modulation of the Gilbert damping in these systems reflects the existence of nodes in the $d$-wave SC and shows power-law decay characteristics within the low-temperature and low-frequency limit. Our results indicate the effectiveness of use of spin pumping as a probe technique to determine the symmetry of unconventional SCs with high sensitivity for nanoscale thin films.

Valley hydrodynamics in gapped graphene

Recent experiments have revealed that novel nonequilibrium states consistent with the hydrodynamic description of electrons are realized in ultrapure graphene, which hosts the valley degrees of freedom. Here, we formulate a theory of electron hydrodynamics including dissipation processes of the valley angular momentum by employing the concept of micropolar fluids. As a result, our theory proposes a novel strategy to generate a valley polarization by the microrotation. We uncover that the rotational viscosity induces longitudinal valley currents which are second order in electric fields.

Valley transport driven by dynamic lattice distortion

Angular momentum conversion between mechanical rotation and the valley degree of freedom in 2D Dirac materials is investigated theoretically. Coupling between the valley and vorticity of dynamic lattice distortions is derived by applying the k.p method to 2D Dirac materials with an inertial effect. Lattice strain effects are also incorporated. Valley transfer and valley-dependent carrier localization are predicted using the dynamic lattice distortions. The transport properties are found to be controllable, allowing the system to be insulating and to generate pulsed charge current. Our formalism offers a route toward mechanical manipulation of valley dynamics in 2D Dirac materials.

Effects of surface plasmons on spin currents in a thin film system

We propose and analyze surface-plasmon-driven electron spin currents in a thin metallic film. The electron gas in the metal follows the transversally rotating electric fields of the surface plasmons (SPs), which leads to a static magnetization gradient. We consider herein SPs in a thin-film insulator-metal-insulator structure and solve the spin diffusion equation in the presence of a magnetization gradient. The results reveal that the SPs at the metal interfaces generate spin currents in the metallic film. For thinner film, the SPs become strongly hybridized, which increases the magnetization gradient and enhances the spin current. We also discuss how the spin current depends on SP wavelength and the spin-diffusion length of the metal. The polarization of the spin current can be controlled by tuning the wavelength of the SPs and/or the spin diffusion length.

Electron spin transport driven by surface plasmon polariton

We propose a mechanism of angular momentum conversion from optical transverse spin in surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) to conduction electron spin. Free electrons in the metal follow the transversally spinning electric field of SPP, and the resulting orbital motions create inhomogeneous static magnetisation in the metal. By solving the spin diffusion equation in the SPP, we find that the magnetisation field generates an electron spin current. We show that there exists a resonant condition where the spin current is resonantly enhanced, and the polarisation of the spin current is flipped. Our theory reveals a novel functionality of SPP as a spin current source.

Enhancement of domain-wall mobility detected by NMR at the angular momentum compensation temperature

The angular momentum compensation temperature $T_{\rm A}$ of ferrimagnets has attracted much attention because of high-speed magnetic dynamics near $T_{\rm A}$. We show that NMR can be used to investigate domain wall dynamics near $T_{\rm A}$ in ferrimagnets. We performed $^{57}$Fe-NMR measurements on the ferrimagnet Ho$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ with $T_{\rm A} = 245$ K. In a multi-domain state, the NMR signal is enhanced by domain wall motion. We found that the NMR signal enhancement shows a maximum at $T_{\rm A}$ in the multi-domain state. The NMR signal enhancement occurs due to increasing domain-wall mobility toward $T_{\rm A}$. We develop the NMR signal enhancement model involves domain-wall mobility. Our study shows that NMR in multi-domain state is a powerful tool to determine $T_{\rm A}$, even from a powder sample and it expands the possibility of searching for angular momentum-compensated materials.

Magnon Current Generation by Dynamical Distortion

The interaction between spin and nanomechanical degrees of freedom attracts interest from the viewpoint of basic science and device applications. We study the magnon current induced by the torsional oscillation of ferromagnetic nanomechanical cantilever. We find that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction emerges by the torsional oscillation, which is described by the spin gauge field, and the DM interaction leads to the detectably-large magnon current with frequency same as that of the torsional oscillation. Our theory paves the way for studying torsional spin-nanomechanical phenomena by using the spin gauge field.

Quantum Oscillations of Gilbert Damping in Ferromagnetic/Graphene Bilayer Systems

We study the spin dynamics of a ferromagnetic insulator on which graphene is placed. We show that the Gilbert damping is enhanced by the proximity exchange coupling at the interface. The modulation of the Gilbert damping constant is proportional to the product of the spin-up and spin-down densities of states of graphene. Consequently, the Gilbert damping constant in a strong magnetic field oscillates as a function of the external magnetic field that originates from the Landau level structure of graphene. We find that a measurement of the oscillation period enables the strength of the exchange coupling constant to be determined. The results demonstrate in theory that the ferromagnetic resonance measurements may be used to detect the spin resolved electronic structure of the adjacent materials, which is critically important for future spin device evaluations.

Spin Current Generation by a Surface Plasmon Polariton

Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an electromagnetic wave which is tightly localised beyond the diffraction limit at metallic surfaces. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the angular momentum conversion between the SPP and electrons. In this work, we have successfully measured SPP induced spin currents, which proves the fact that the angular momenta are interconverted. Such conversion from light to a spin current can be used as a coupler in a next generation spintronic computing with optical data transfer or storage.

Spin hydrodynamic generation in graphene

Graphene hosts an ultra-clean electronic system with electron-electron collisions being the dominant source of scattering above liquid nitrogen temperatures. In this regime, the motion of the electron fluid resembles the flow of classical liquids and gases with high viscosity. Here we show that such a viscous electron flow can cause the generation of a spin current perpendicular to the direction of flow. Combining the Navier-Stokes equations and the spin diffusion equation in the presence of the spin-vorticity coupling, we derive an expression for the spin accumulation emerging purely as a result of the viscous electron flow. We explore Poiseuille flow and Jeffery-Hamel flow and show that the spin Hall angle may exceed 0.1 over a wide range of temperatures and can be controlled by carrier density, temperature, and the geometry of sample boundaries. Our theory points to new functionality of graphene as a spin current source.

Valley-dependent spin transport in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides

We study valley-dependent spin transport theoretically in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides in which a variety of spin and valley physics are expected because of spin-valley coupling. The results show that the spins are valley-selectively excited with appropriate carrier doping and valley polarized spin current (VPSC) is generated. The VPSC leads to the spin-current Hall effect, transverse spin accumulation originating from the Berry curvature in momentum space. The results indicate that spin excitations with spin-valley coupling lead to both valley and spin transport, which is promising for future low-consumption nanodevice applications.

Mechanical generation of spin current by spin-rotation coupling

Spin-rotation coupling, which is responsible for angular momentum conversion between the electron spin and rotational deformations of elastic media, is exploited for generating spin current. This method requires neither magnetic moments nor spin-orbit interaction. The spin current generated in nonmagnets is calculated in presence of surface acoustic waves. We solve the spin diffusion equation, extended to include spin-rotation coupling, and find that larger spin currents can be obtained in materials with longer spin lifetimes. Spin accumulation induced on the surface is predicted to be detectable by time-resolved Kerr spectroscopy.

Renormalization of spin-rotation coupling

We predict the enhancement of the spin-rotation coupling due to the interband mixing. The Bloch wavefunctions in the presence of mechanical rotation are constructed with the generalized crystal momentum which includes a gauge potential arising from the rotation. Using the eight- band Kane model, the renormalized spin-rotation coupling is explicitly obtained. As a result of the renormalization, the rotational Doppler shift in electron spin resonance and the mechanical torque on an electron spin will be strongly modulated.

Spin current generation due to mechanical rotation in the presence of impurity scattering

We theoretically investigate the generation of spin current from a uniformly rotating body with impurity scattering on the basis of the spin dependent transport equation. The spin current is created mainly in the radial direction when a weak magnetic field, where the cyclotron frequency is smaller than the inverse of the relaxation time due to the impurity scattering, is applied parallel to the rotation axis. Spin accumulation is estimated by solving the spin diffusion equation. We show that the inverse spin Hall effect can be used to detect the spin current induced by rotation.

Spin-dependent inertial force and spin current in accelerating systems

The spin-dependent inertial force in an accelerating system under the presence of electromagnetic fields is derived from the generally covariant Dirac equation. Spin currents are evaluated by the force up to the lowest order of the spin-orbit coupling in both ballistic and diffusive regimes. We give an interpretation of the inertial effect of linear acceleration on an electron as an effective electric field and show that mechanical vibration in a high frequency resonator can create a spin current via the spin-orbit interaction augmented by the linear acceleration.

Effects of mechanical rotation on spin currents

We study the Pauli--Schrödinger equation in a uniformly rotating frame of reference to describe a coupling of spins and mechanical rotations. The explicit form of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) with the inertial effects due to the mechanical rotation is presented. We derive equations of motion for a wavepacket of electrons in two-dimensional planes subject to the SOI. The solution is a superposition of two cyclotron motions with different frequencies and a circular spin current is created by the mechanical rotation.
