Stoke's efficiency and its stochastic properties

We study the Stoke's efficiency and its fluctuating properties in the case of a spatial asymmetric ratchet potential with a temporal asymmetric driving force from adiabatic to nonadiabatic regime. Our numerical investigations show that the average Stoke's efficiency and the average current decrease with the frequency of driving. For low frequency of driving, i.e., in the case of an adiabatic regime, we reproduced the analytical results supporting our numerical simulations. By evaluating the probability distribution, $p(η_{s})$ for Stoke's efficiency, $η_{s}$ we focus on the stochastic properties of Stokes efficiency. We find that in most of the parameter space, fluctuations in $η_{s}$ are comparable to or larger than the mean values. In such a situation one has to study the full probability distribution of $η_{s}$. With increase in frequency of driving, the distribution becomes multipeaked. At the same time the average Stoke's efficiency decreases with increase in frequency of drive. For high frequency of driving, the distribution develops a peak across zero. Further increase in frequency this peak gets sharper. And finally at sufficiently high frequency we get a strong peak across zero indicating that there is no effective transport in this regime.

Transport coherence in a time-asymmetric rocked ratchet model

We study the dynamics of an over damped Brownian particle in a saw tooth potential in the presence of a temporal asymmetric driving force. We observe that in the deterministic limit, the transport coherence, which is determined by a dimensionless quantity called Peclet number, $Pe$ is quite high for larger spatial asymmetry in the ratchet potential. For all the regime of parameter space of this model, $Pe$ follows the nature of current like Stokes efficiency. Diffusion as a function of amplitude of drive shows a minimum exactly at which the current shows a maximum. Unlike the previously studied models, the $Pe$ as a function of temperature shows a peaking behavior and the coherence in transport decreases for high temperatures. In the nonadiabatic regime, the $Pe$ as a function of amplitude of drive decreases and the peak gets broader as a result the transport becomes unreliable.

Fluctuation theorems and atypical trajectories

In this work, we have studied simple models that can be solved analytically to illustrate various fluctuation theorems. These fluctuation theorems provide symmetries individually to the distributions of physical quantities like the classical work ($W_c$), thermodynamic work ($W$), total entropy ($Δs_{tot}$) and dissipated heat ($Q$), when the system is driven arbitrarily out of equilibrium. All these quantities can be defined for individual trajectories. We have studied the number of trajectories which exhibit behaviour unexpected at the macroscopic level. As the time of observation increases, the fraction of such atypical trajectories decreases, as expected at macroscale. Nature of distributions for the thermodynamic work and the entropy production in nonlinear models may exhibit peak (most probable value) in the atypical regime without violating the expected average behaviour. However, dissipated heat and classical work exhibit peak in the regime of typical behaviour only.

Quantum Work Relations under Trial Hamiltonians

The universal quantum work relation connects a functional of an arbitrary observable averaged over the forward process to the free energy difference and another functional averaged over the time-reversed process. Here, we ask the question if the system is driven out of equilibrium by a different Hamiltonian rather than the original one during the forward process and similarly during the reversed process then how accurate is the quantum work relation. We present an inequality that must be satisfied when the system is driven out by such a trial Hamiltonian. This also answers the issue of accuracy of the Jarzynski relation with a trial Hamiltonian. We have shown that the correction term can be expressed as the averages of the difference operator between the accurate and trial Hamiltonians. This leads to a generalized version of the Bogoliubov inequality for the free energy differences.

Classical and Thermodynamic work fluctuations

We have studied the nature of classical work ($W_{c}$) and thermodynamic work ($W$) fluctuations in systems driven out of equilibrium both in transient and time periodic steady state. As the observation time of trajectory increases, we show that the number of trajectories which exhibit excursions away from the typical behaviour i.e., $W_{c}<0$, $W<ΔF$ and dissipated heat $Q<0$ decreases as anticipated for macroscopic time scales. Analytical expressions for such trajectories are obtained. Trajectory for which $W_{c}<0$ may not correspond to $W<ΔF$ or $Q<0$. The applicability of steady state fluctuation theorems are discussed in our linear as well as nonlinear models.

A charged particle in a magnetic field - Jarzynski Equality

We describe some solvable models which illustrate the Jarzynski theorem and related fluctuation theorems. We consider a charged particle in the presence of magnetic field in a two dimensional harmonic well. In the first case the centre of the harmonic potential is translated with a uniform velocity, while in the other case the particle is subjected to an ac force. We show that Jarzynski identity complements Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem on the absence of diamagnetism in equilibrium classical system.
