Automating scattering amplitudes with chirality flow

Recently we introduced the chirality-flow formalism, a method which builds on the spinor-helicity formalism and is inspired by the color-flow idea in QCD. With this formalism, Feynman rules and diagrams are simplified to the extent that it is often possible to immediately, by hand, write down a helicity amplitude given a Feynman diagram. In this paper we show that the method can also speed up numerical evaluation of scattering amplitudes by considering $e^+ e^-$ going to $n$ photons in a MadGraph-based tree-level implementation. We find that the computation time is reduced by roughly a factor ten for six photons, and that it scales better with the number of external particles than the default MadGraph5_aMC@NLO implementation. This performance gain is in part attributed to the more compact Lorentz structures involved, and in part due to a transparent choice of gauge reference vectors which reduces the number of Feynman diagrams considered.

The chirality-flow formalism for standard model calculations

Scattering amplitudes are often split up into their color (su(N)) and kinematic components. Since the su(N) gauge part can be described using flows of color, one may anticipate that the double su(2) kinematic part can be described in terms of flows of chirality. In two recent papers we showed that this is indeed the case, introducing the chirality-flow formalism for standard model calculations. Using the chirality-flow method -- which builds on and further simplifies the spinor-helicity formalism -- Feynman diagrams can be directly written down in terms of Lorentz-invariant spinor inner products, allowing the simplest and most direct path from a Feynman diagram to a complex number. In this presentation, we introduce this method and show some examples.

Decomposing color structure into multiplet bases

We illustrate how QCD color structure elegantly can be decomposed into orthogonal multiplet bases corresponding to irreducible representations of SU(Nc) with the aid of Wigner 3j and 6j coefficients. We also show how to calculate the relevant 3j and 6j coefficients using multiplet bases and birdtrack techniques and argue that only a relatively small number of Wigner 3j and 6j coefficients are required. For up to six gluons plus quark-antiquark pairs we explicitly calculate all 6j coefficients required for up to NLO calculations.

Recursion in multiplet bases for tree-level MHV gluon amplitudes

We investigate the construction of tree-level MHV gluon amplitudes in multiplet bases using BCFW recursion. The multiplet basis decomposition can either be obtained by decomposing results derived in (for example) the DDM basis or by formulating the recursion directly in the multiplet basis. We focus on the latter approach and show how to efficiently deal with the color structure appearing in the recursion. For illustration, we also explicitly calculate the four-, five- and six-gluon amplitudes.

Beyond the t-channel Approximation: Next-to-Leading Order QCD Corrections to Electroweak Higgs Boson Plus Three Jet Production at the LHC

In this talk we discuss the implementation of the full next-to-leading order QCD corrections to electroweak Higgs boson plus three jet production at the LHC within the Matchbox framework of the Herwig++ event generator. We also present numerical results for integrated cross sections and kinematic distributions.

Orthogonal multiplet bases in SU(Nc) color space

We develop a general recipe for constructing orthogonal bases for the calculation of color structures appearing in QCD for any number of partons and arbitrary Nc. The bases are constructed using hermitian gluon projectors onto irreducible subspaces invariant under SU(Nc). Thus, each basis vector is associated with an irreducible representation of SU(Nc). The resulting multiplet bases are not only orthogonal, but also minimal for finite Nc. As a consequence, for calculations involving many colored particles, the number of basis vectors is reduced significantly compared to standard approaches employing overcomplete bases. We exemplify the method by constructing multiplet bases for all processes involving a total of 6 external colored partons.

The Sudakov Veto Algorithm Reloaded

We perform a careful analysis of the main Monte Carlo algorithm used in parton shower simulations, the Sudakov veto algorithm. We prove a general version of the algorithm, directly including the dependence on the infrared cutoff. Taking this as a starting point, we then consider non-positive definite splitting kernels, as encountered when dealing with sub-leading colour correlations or splitting kernels beyond leading order. New algorithms suited for these situations are developed.

Color structure for soft gluon resummation - a general recipe

A strategy for calculating the color structure needed for soft gluon resummation for processes with any number of colored partons is introduced using a N_c --> infinity inspired basis. In this basis a general formalism can be found at the same time as the calculations are simplified. The advantages are illustrated by recalculating the soft anomalous dimension matrix for the processes gg --> gg, q\qbar --> q \qbar g and q\qbar --> ggg.
