Herwig 7.2 Release Note

A new release of the Monte Carlo event generator Herwig (version 7.2) is now available. This version introduces a number of improvements, notably: improvements to the simulation of multiple-parton interactions, including diffractive processes; a new model for baryonic colour re-connection; spin correlations in both the dipole and angular-ordered parton showers; improvements to strangeness production; an improved choice of evolution variable in the angular-ordered parton shower; support for generic Lorentz structures in BSM models.

Anomalous coupling, top-mass and parton-shower effects in ${W^+W^-}$ production

We calculate the process $pp\to W^+W^-\to e^+ ν_e μ^-\barν_μ$ at NLO QCD, including also effective field theory (EFT) operators mediating the $ggW^+W^-$ interaction, which first occur at dimension eight. We further combine the NLO and EFT matrix elements produced by GoSam with the HERWIG7/MATCHBOX framework, which offers the possibility to study the impact of a parton shower. We assess the effects of the anomalous couplings by comparing them to top-mass effects as well as uncertainties related to variations of the renormalisation, factorisation and hard shower scales.

Controlling inclusive cross sections in parton shower + matrix element merging

We propose an extension of matrix element plus parton shower merging at tree level to preserve inclusive cross sections obtained from the merged and showered sample. Implementing this constraint generates approximate next-to-leading order (NLO) contributions similar to the LoopSim approach. We then show how full NLO, or in principle even higher order, corrections can be added consistently, including constraints on inclusive cross sections to account for yet missing parton shower accuracy at higher logarithmic order. We also show how NLO accuracy below the merging scale can be obtained.

ExSample -- A Library for Sampling Sudakov-Type Distributions

Sudakov-type distributions are at the heart of generating radiation in parton showers as well as contemporary NLO matching algorithms along the lines of the POWHEG algorithm. In this paper, the C++ library ExSample is introduced, which implements adaptive sampling of Sudakov-type distributions for splitting kernels which are in general only known numerically. Besides the evolution variable, the splitting kernels can depend on an arbitrary number of other degrees of freedom to be sampled, and any number of further parameters which are fixed on an event-by-event basis.

The Sudakov Veto Algorithm Reloaded

We perform a careful analysis of the main Monte Carlo algorithm used in parton shower simulations, the Sudakov veto algorithm. We prove a general version of the algorithm, directly including the dependence on the infrared cutoff. Taking this as a starting point, we then consider non-positive definite splitting kernels, as encountered when dealing with sub-leading colour correlations or splitting kernels beyond leading order. New algorithms suited for these situations are developed.

Dipole Showers and Automated NLO Matching in Herwig++

We report on the implementation of a coherent dipole shower algorithm along with an automated implementation for dipole subtraction and for performing POWHEG- and MC@NLO-type matching to next-to-leading order (NLO) calculations. Both programs are implemented as add-on modules to the event generator Herwig++. A preliminary tune of parameters to data acquired at LEP, HERA and Drell-Yan pair production at the Tevatron has been performed, and we find an overall very good description which is slightly improved by the NLO matching.

Coherent Parton Showers with Local Recoils

We outline a new formalism for dipole-type parton showers which maintain exact energy-momentum conservation at each step of the evolution. Particular emphasis is put on the coherence properties, the level at which recoil effects do enter and the role of transverse momentum generation from initial state radiation. The formulated algorithm is shown to correctly incorporate coherence for soft gluon radiation. Furthermore, it is well suited for easing matching to next-to-leading order calculations.
