Precursors to Topological Phase Transition in Topological Ladders

We study the coupling of two topologcal subsystems in distinct topological states, and show that it leads to a precursor behavior of the topological phase transition in the overall system. This behavior is solely determined by the symmetry classes of the subsystem Hamiltonians and coupling terms, and is marked by the persistent existence of subgap states within the bulk energy gap. By investigating the critical current of Josephson junctions involving topological superconductors, we also illustrate that such subgap states play crucial roles in physical properties of nanoscale devices or materials.

Single-Qubit Reaped Quantum State Tomography

Quantum state tomography is the experimental procedure of determining an unknown state. It is not only essential for the verification of resources and processors of quantum information but is also important in its own right with regard to the foundation of quantum mechanics. Standard methods have been elusive for large systems because of the enormous number of observables to be measured and the exponential complexity of data post-processing. Here, we propose a new scheme of quantum state tomography that requires the measurement of only three observables (acting jointly on the system and pointer) regardless of the size of the system. The system is coupled to a "pointer" of single qubit, and the wavefunction of the system is "reaped" onto the pointer upon the measurement of the system. Subsequently, standard two-state tomography on the pointer and classical post-processing are used to reconstruct the quantum state of the system. We also developed an efficient and scalable iterative maximum likelihood algorithm to estimate states from statistically incomplete data.

Geometric Manipulation of a Decoherence-Free Subspace in Atomic Ensembles

We consider an ensemble of atoms with $Λ$-type level structure trapped in a single-mode cavity, and propose a geometric scheme of coherent manipulation of quantum states on the subspace of zero-energy states within the quantum Zeno subspace of the system. We find that the particular subspace inherits the decoherence-free nature of the quantum Zeno subspace and features a symmetry-protected degeneracy, fulfilling all the conditions for a universal scheme of arbitrary unitary operations on it.

Recurrent delocalization and quasi-equilibration of photons in coupled circuit QED systems

We explore the photon population dynamics in two coupled circuit QED systems. For a sufficiently weak inter-cavity photon hopping, as the photon-cavity coupling increases, the dynamics undergoes double transitions first from a delocalized to a localized phase and then from the localized to another delocalized phase. The latter delocalized phase is distinguished from the former one; instead of oscillating between the two cavities, the photons rapidly quasi-equilibrate over the two cavities. These intrigues are attributed to an interplay between two qualitatively distinctive nonlinear behaviors of the circuit QED systems in the utrastrong coupling regime, whose distinction has been widely overlooked.

Spatiotemporal Evolution of Topological Order Upon Quantum Quench Across the Critical Point

We consider a topological superconducting wire and use the string order parameter to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of the topological order upon a quantum quench across the critical point. We also analyze the propagation of the initially localized Majorana bound states after the quench, in order to examine the connection between the topological order and the unpaired Majorana states, which has been well established at equilibrium but remains illusive in dynamical situations. It is found that after the quench the string order parameters decay over a finite time and that the decaying behavior is universal, independent of the wire length and the final value of the chemical potential (the quenching parameter). It is also found that the topological order is revived repeatedly although the amplitude gradually decreases. Further, the topological order can propagate into the region which was initially in the non-topological state. It is observed that all these behaviors are in parallel and consistent with the propagation and dispersion of the Majorana wave functions. Finally, we propose a local probing method which can measure the non-local topological order.

Emergent Universality in Nonequilibrium Processes of Critical Systems

We examine the Jarzynski equality for a quenching process across the critical point of second-order phase transitions, where absolute irreversibility and the effect of finite-sampling of the initial equilibrium distribution arise on an equal footing. We consider the Ising model as a prototypical example for spontaneous symmetry breaking and take into account the finite sampling issue by introducing a tolerance parameter. For a given tolerance parameter, the deviation from the Jarzynski equality depends onthe reduced coupling constant and the system size. In this work, we show that the deviation from the Jarzynski equality exhibits a universal scaling behavior inherited from the critical scaling laws of second-order phase transitions.

The Kibble-Zurek Mechanism in a Topological Phase Transition

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) is generalized to a class of multi-level systems and applied to study the quenching dynamics of one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors (TS) with open ends. Unlike the periodic boundary condition, the open boundary condition, that is crucial for the zero-mode Majorana states localized at the boundaries, requires to consider many coupled levels. which is ultimately related to the zero-mode Majorana modes. Our generalized KZM predictions agree well with the numerically exact results for the 1D TS.

Hanbury Brown and Twiss Correlations of Cooper Pairs in Helical Liquids

We propose a Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) experiment of Cooper pairs on the edge channels of quantum spin Hall insulators. The helical edge channels provide a well defined beam of Cooper pairs and perfect Andreev reflections from superconductors. Surprisingly, the Cooper pairs do not bear a bosonic nature at all once emitted from the superconductor, and the cross correlation is strongly negative as for free electrons. This result is counter-intuitive, and seemingly contradictory to the previous theoretical and recent experimental results. We will point out that our setup is much closer in spirit to the original HBT experiment (and different) than those in previous works. We will argue that these differences affect significantly the results.

Negative Tunneling Magneto-Resistance in Quantum Wires with Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling

We consider a two-dimensional magnetic tunnel junction of the FM/I/QW(FM+SO)/I/N structure, where FM, I and QW(FM+SO) stand for a ferromagnet, an insulator and a quantum wire (QW) with both magnetic ordering and Rashba spin-orbit (SOC), respectively. The tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) exhibits strong anisotropy and switches sign as the polarization direction varies relative to the QW axis, due to interplay among the one-dimensionality, the magnetic ordering, and the strong SOC of the QW. The results may provide a possible explanation for the sign-switching anisotropic TMR recently observed in the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface.

Quantum Resistor-Capacitor Circuit with Majorana Fermion Modes in Chiral Topological Superconductor

We investigate the mesoscopic resistor-capacitor circuit consisting of a quantum dot coupled to spatially separated Majorana fermion modes in a chiral topological superconductor. We find substantially enhanced relaxation resistance due to the nature of Majorana fermions, which are their own anti-particles and composed of particle and hole excitations in the same abundance. Further, if only a single Majorana mode is involved, the zero-frequency relaxation resistance is completely suppressed due to a destructive interference. As a result, the Majorana mode opens an exotic dissipative channel on a superconductor which is typically regarded as dissipationless due to its finite superconducting gap.

Anomalous crossed Andreev reflection in mesoscopic superconducting ring hosting Majorana fermions

We investigate the Majorana physics and its effect on the electron transport in the non-topological superconductor(NS)-topological superconductor(TS) double junctions of a ring geometry. We find that, depending on the ratio between the lengths of two topologically different regions and the localization lengths of the Majorana fermions formed between them, two completely different transport mechanisms are working: perfect crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) for the short NS region and perfect normal Andreev reflection for the short TS region. The difference is explained in terms of the topologically distinct properties of subgap states in the NS-TS double junction system, which have not been revealed so far. The exotic dependence of the CAR process on the magnetic flux threading the ring is uncovered and can be used to detect the Majorana fermions.

Large-Scale Schrödinger-Cat States and Majorana Bound States in Coupled Circuit-QED Systems

We have studied the low-lying excitations of a chain of coupled circuit-QED systems, and report several intriguing properties of its two nearly degenerate ground states. The ground states are Schrödinger cat states at a truly large scale, involving maximal entanglement between the resonator and the qubit, and are mathematically equivalent to Majorana bound states. With a suitable design of physical qubits, they are protected against local fluctuations and constitute a non-local qubit. Further, they can be probed and manipulated coherently by attaching an empty resonator to one end of the circuit-QED chain.

Transport Measurement of Andreev Bound States in a Kondo-Correlated Quantum Dot

We report transport measurements of gate-tunable Andreev bound states in a carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to two superconducting leads. In particular, we observe clear features of two types of Kondo ridges, which can be understood in terms of the interplay between the Kondo effect and superconductivity. In the first type (type I), the coupling is strong and the Kondo effect is dominant. Levels of the Andreev bound states display anti-crossing in the middle of the ridge. On the other hand, crossing of the two Andreev bound states is shown in the second type (type II) together with the 0-$π$ transition of the Josephson junction. Our scenario is well understood in terms of only a single dimensionless parameter, $k_BT_K^{min}/Δ$, where $T_K^{min}$ and $Δ$ are the minimum Kondo temperature of a ridge and the superconducting order parameter, respectively. Our observation is consistent with measurements of the critical current, and is supported by numerical renormalization group calculations.

Interferometric and noise signatures of Majorana fermion edge states in transport experiments

Domain walls between superconducting and magnetic regions placed on top of a topological insulator support transport channels for Majorana fermions. We propose to study noise correlations in a Hanbury Brown-Twiss type interferometer and find three signatures of the Majorana nature of the channels. First, the average charge current in the outgoing leads vanishes. Furthermore, we predict an anomalously large shot noise in the output ports for a vanishing average current signal. Adding a quantum point contact to the setup, we find a surprising absence of partition noise which can be traced back to the Majorana nature of the carriers.

Josephson current in carbon nanotubes with spin-orbit interaction

We demonstrate that curvature-induced spin-orbit (SO) coupling induces a $0-π$ transition in the Josephson current through a carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads. In the non-interacting regime, the transition can be tuned by applying parallel magnetic field near the critical field where orbital states become degenerate. Moreover, the interplay between charging and SO effects in the Coulomb Blockade and cotunneling regimes leads to a rich phase diagram with well-defined (analytical) boundaries in parameter space. Finally, the 0 phase always prevails in the Kondo regime. Our calculations are relevant in view of recent experimental advances in transport through ultra-clean carbon nanotubes.

Many-body Correlation Effect on Mesoscopic Charge Relaxation

We investigate in a nonperturbative way the dynamics of a correlated quantum capacitor. We find that the many-body correlations do not disturb the universal low-frequency relaxation resistance per channel, $R_q(ω=0) = h/4e^2$ ensured by the Korringa-Shiba rule whereas the interpretation of the quantum capacitance $C_q$ in terms of the density of states fails when strong correlations are present. The AC resistance $R_q(ω)$ shows huge peaks (with values larger than $h/4e^2$) at $\hbarω\approx \pm Γ^*$, where $Γ^*$ is the renormalized level broadening. These peaks are merged to a single one at $ω=0$ when a finite Zeeman field is applied comparable to $Γ^*$. The observed features of $R_q$, being most evident in the Kondo regime, are attributed to the generation of particle-hole excitations in the contacts accomplished by spin-flip processes in the dot.

Superconducting junction of a single-crystalline Au nanowire for an ideal Josephson device

We report on the fabrication and measurements of a superconducting junction of a single-crystalline Au nanowire, connected to Al electrodes. Current-Voltage characteristic curve shows clear supercurrent branch below the superconducting transition temperature of Al and quantized voltage plateaus on application of microwave radiation, as expected from Josephson relations. Highly transparent (0.95) contacts very close to an ideal limit of 1 are formed at the interface between the normal metal (Au) and the superconductor (Al). The very high transparency is ascribed to the single crystallinity of a Au nanowire and the formation of an oxide-free contact between Au and Al. The sub-gap structures of the differential conductance are well explained by coherent multiple Andreev reflections (MAR), the hallmark of mesoscopic Josephson junctions. These observations demonstrate that single crystalline Au nanowires can be employed to develop novel quantum devices utilizing coherent electrical transport.

Coupling Circuit Resonators Among Themselves and To Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers in Diamond

We propose a scheme to couple NV centers in diamond through coplanar waveguide resonators. The central conductor of the resonator is split into several pieces which are coupled strongly with each other via simple capacitive junctions or superconducting Josephson junctions. The NV centers are then put at the junctions. The discontinuity at the junctions induces a large local magnetic field, with which the NV centers are strongly coupled to the circuit resonator. The coupling strength $g$ between the resonator and the NV center is of order of $g/2π\sim 1$--$30\unit{MHz}$.

Josephson current in strongly correlated double quantum dots

We study the transport properties of a serial double quantum dot (DQD) coupled to two superconducting leads, focusing on the Josephson current through the DQD and the associated 0-$π$ transitions which result from the subtle interplay between the superconductivity, the Kondo physics, and the inter-dot superexchange interaction. We examine the competition between the superconductivity and the Kondo physics by tuning the relative strength $Δ/T_K$ of the superconducting gap $Δ$ and the Kondo temperature $T_K$, for different strengths of the superexchange coupling determined by the interdot tunneling $t$ relative to the dot level broadening $Γ$. We find strong renormalization of $t$, a significant role of the superexchange coupling $J$, and a rich phase diagram of the 0 and $π$-junction regimes. In particular, when both the superconductivity and the exchange interaction are in close competion with the Kondo physics ($Δ\sim J\sim T_K$), there appears an island of $π'$-phase at large values of the superconducting phase difference.

Local and Nonlocal Contents in N-qubit generalized GHZ states

We investigate local contents in $N$-qubit generalized Greenberger, Horne, and Zeilinger (GHZ) states. We suggest a decomposition for correlations in the GHZ states into a nonlocal and fully local part, and find a lower and upper bound on the local content. Our lower bound reproduces the previous result for N=2 [Scarani, Phys. Rev. A. 77, 042112 (2008)] and decreases rapidly with $N$.

Superconducting Qubits Coupled to Torsional Resonators

We propose a scheme of strong and tunable coupling between a superconducting phase qubit and nanomechanical torsional resonator. In our scheme the torsional resonator directly modulates the largest energy scale (the Josephson coupling energy) of the phase qubit, and the coupling strength is very large. We analyze the quantum correlation effects in the torsional resonator as a result of the strong coupling to the phase qubit.

Variational study of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator in a ultrastrong coupling regime

The nonclassical behaviors of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator is investigated in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We revisit the variational solution of the ground state and find that the existing solution do not account accurately for nonclassical effects such squeezing. We suggest a new trial wave function and demonstrate that it has an excellent accuracy on the quantum correlation effects as well as on energy.

Conductance of tubular nanowires with disorder

We calculate the conductance of tubular-shaped nanowires having many potential scatterers at random positions. Our approach is based on the scattering matrix formalism and our results analyzed within the scaling theory of disordered conductors. When increasing the energy the conductance for a big enough number of impurities in the tube manifests a systematic evolution from the localized to the metallic regimes. Nevertheless, a conspicuous drop in conductance is predicted whenever a new transverse channel is open. Comparison with the semiclassical calculation leading to purely ohmic behavior is made.

The Two-impurity Anderson Model Revisited: Competition between Kondo Effect and Reservoir-mediated Superexchange in Double Quantum Dots

We study a series-coupled double quantum dot in the Kondo regime modeled by the two-impurity Anderson model and find a new conduction-band mediated superexchange interaction that competes with Kondo physics in the strong Coulomb interaction limit. Our numerical renormalization group results, complemented with the higher-order Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory, show that the novel exchange mechanism leads to clear experimental consequences that can be checked in transport measurements through double quantum dots.

Quantum-based Mechanical Force Realization in Pico-Newton Range

We propose mechanical force realization based on flux quantization in the pico-Newton range. By controlling the number of flux quantum in a superconducting annulus, a force can be created as integer multiples of a constant step. For a 50 nm-thick Nb annulus with the inner and outer radii of 5 $μ$m and 10 $μ$m, respectively, and the field gradient of 10 T/m the force step is estimated to be 184 fN. The stability against thermal fluctuations is also addressed.

Geometric Quantum Computation on Solid-State Qubits

An adiabatic cyclic evolution of control parameters of a quantum system ends up with a holonomic operation on the system, determined entirely by the geometry in the parameter space. The operation is given either by a simple phase factor (a Berry phase) or a non-Abelian unitary operator depending on the degeneracy of the eigenspace of the Hamiltonian. Geometric quantum computation is a scheme to use such holonomic operations rather than the conventional dynamic operations to manipulate quantum states for quantum information processing. Here we propose a geometric quantum computation scheme which can be realized with current technology on nanoscale Josephson-junction networks, known as a promising candidate for solid-state quantum computer.

Exact Calculation of the Vortex-Antivortex Interaction Energy in the Anisotropic 3D XY-model

We have developed an exact method to calculate the vortex-antivortex interaction energy in the anisotropic 3D-XY model. For this calculation, dual transformation which is already known for the 2D XY-model was extended. We found an explicit form of this interaction energy as a function of the anisotropic ratio and the separation $r$ between the vortex and antivortex located on the same layer. The form of interaction energy is $\ln r$ at the small $r$ limi t but is proportional to $r$ at the opposite limit. This form of interaction energ y is consistent with the upper bound calculation using the variational method by Cataudella and Minnhagen.
