A Wells type exact sequence for non-degenerate unitary solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation

Cycle sets are known to give non-degenerate unitary solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation and linear cycle sets are enriched versions of these algebraic systems. The paper explores the recently developed cohomology and extension theory for linear cycle sets. We derive a four term exact sequence relating 1-cocycles, second cohomology and certain groups of automorphisms arising from central extensions of linear cycle sets. This is an analogue of a similar exact sequence for group extensions known due to Wells. We also compare the exact sequence for linear cycle sets with that for their underlying abelian groups via the forgetful functor and discuss generalities on dynamical 2-cocycles.

Derivations of quandles

The aim of this paper is to propose a theory of derivations for quandles. Given a quandle $A$ admitting an action by a quandle $Q$, derivations from $Q$ to $A$ are introduced as twisted analogues of quandle homomorphisms. It is shown that for each quandle $Q$ there exists a unique $Q$-quandle $\mathcal{A}_Q$ (the derived quandle of $Q$) such that derivations from $Q$ to any $Q$-quandle $A$ are in bijective correspondence with $Q$-quandle homomorphisms from $\mathcal{A}_Q$ to $A$. Further, it is proved that the set of all derivations to an abelian $Q$-quandle $A$ has the structure of an abelian quandle, and inherits many other properties from $A$. In the end, the ideas are extended to the setting of virtual quandles.

Zero-divisors and idempotents in quandle rings

The paper develops further the theory of quandle rings which was introduced by the authors in a recent work. Orderability of quandles is defined and many interesting examples of orderable quandles are given. It is proved that quandle rings of left or right orderable quandles which are semi-latin have no zero-divisors. Idempotents in quandle rings of certain interesting quandles are computed and used to determine sets of maximal quandles in these rings. Understanding of idempotents is further applied to determine automorphism groups of these quandle rings. Also, commutator width of quandle rings is introduced and computed in a few cases. The paper conclude by commenting on relation of quandle rings with other well-known non-associative algebras.

Link quandles are residually finite

Residual finiteness is known to be an important property of groups appearing in combinatorial group theory and low dimensional topology. In a recent work [2] residual finiteness of quandles was introduced, and it was proved that free quandles and knot quandles are residually finite. In this paper, we extend these results and prove that free products of residually finite quandles are residually finite provided their associated groups are residually finite. As associated groups of link quandles are link groups, which are known to be residually finite, it follows that link quandles are residually finite.

Palindromic Automorphisms of Free Nilpotent Groups

In this paper, we initiate the study of palindromic automorphisms of groups that are free in some variety. More specifically, we define palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups and show that the set of such automorphisms is a group. We find a generating set for the group of palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 2 and 3. In particular, we obtain a generating set for the group of central palindromic automorphisms of these groups. In the end, we determine central palindromic automorphisms of free nilpotent groups of step 3 which satisfy the necessary condition of Bryant-Gupta-Levin-Mochizuki for a central automorphism to be tame.

Some Problems on Knots, Braids, and Automorphism Groups

We present and discuss some open problems formulated by participants of the International Workshop "Knots, Braids, and Auto\-mor\-phism Groups" held in Novosibirsk, 2014. Problems are related to palindromic and commutator widths of groups; properties of Brunnian braids and two-colored braids, corresponding to an amalgamation of groups; extreme properties of hyperbolic 3-orbifold groups, relations between inner and quasi-inner automorphisms of groups; and Staic's construction of symmetric cohomology of groups.

Free 2-rank of symmetry of products of Milnor manifolds

A real Milnor manifold is the non-singular hypersurface of degree $(1,1)$ in the product of two real projective spaces. These manifolds were introduced by Milnor to give generators for the unoriented cobordism algebra, and they admit free actions by elementary abelian 2-groups. In this paper, we obtain some results on the free 2-rank of symmetry of products of finitely many real Milnor manifolds under the assumption that the induced action on mod 2 cohomology is trivial. Similar results are obtained for complex Milnor manifolds which are defined analogously. Here the free 2-rank of symmetry of a topological space is the maximal rank of an elementary abelian 2-group which acts freely on that space.

Symmetric continuous cohomology of topological groups

In this paper, we introduce a symmetric continuous cohomology of topological groups. This is obtained by topologizing a recent construction due to Staic (J. Algebra 322 (2009), 1360-1378), where a symmetric cohomology of abstract groups is constructed. We give a characterization of topological group extensions that correspond to elements of the second symmetric continuous cohomology. We also show that the symmetric continuous cohomology of a profinite group with coefficients in a discrete module is equal to the direct limit of the symmetric cohomology of finite groups. In the end, we also define symmetric smooth cohomology of Lie groups and prove similar results.

Cohomology algebra of orbit spaces of free involutions on lens spaces

Let $G$ be a group acting continuously on a space $X$ and let $X/G$ be its orbit space. Determining the topological or cohomological type of the orbit space $X/G$ is a classical problem in the theory of transformation groups. In this paper, we consider this problem for cohomology lens spaces. Let $X$ be a finitistic space having the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the lens space $L_p^{2m-1}(q_1,...,q_m)$. Then we classify completely the possible mod 2 cohomology algebra of orbit spaces of arbitrary free involutions on $X$. We also give examples of spaces realizing the possible cohomology algebras. In the end, we give an application of our results to non-existence of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant map $\mathbb{S}^n \to X$.

Fixed points of circle actions on spaces with rational cohomology of $S^n V S^{2n} V S^{3n}$ or $P^2(n) V S^{3n}$

Let $X$ be a finitistic space with its rational cohomology isomorphic to that of the wedge sum $P^2(n)\vee S^{3n} $ or $S^{n} \vee S^{2n}\vee S^{3n}$. We study continuous $\mathbb{S}^1$ actions on $X$ and determine the possible fixed point sets up to rational cohomology depending on whether or not $X$ is totally non-homologous to zero in $X_{\mathbb{S}^1}$ in the Borel fibration $X\hookrightarrow X_{\mathbb{S}^1} \longrightarrow B_{\mathbb{S}^1}$. We also give examples realizing the possible cases.

Orbit spaces of free involutions on the product of two projective spaces

Let $X$ be a finitistic space having the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the product of two projective spaces. We study free involutions on $X$ and determine the possible mod 2 cohomology algebra of orbit space of any free involution, using the Leray spectral sequence associated to the Borel fibration $X \hookrightarrow X_{\mathbb{Z}_2} \longrightarrow B_{\mathbb{Z}_2}$. We also give an application of our result to show that if $X$ has the mod 2 cohomology algebra of the product of two real projective spaces (respectively complex projective spaces), then there does not exist any $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant map from $\mathbb{S}^k \to X$ for $k \geq 2$ (respectively $k \geq 3$), where $\mathbb{S}^k$ is equipped with the antipodal involution.

Parametrized Borsuk-Ulam problem for projective space bundles

Let $π: E \to B$ be a fiber bundle with fiber having the mod 2 cohomology algebra of a real or a complex projective space and let $π^{'}: E^{'} \to B$ be vector bundle such that $\mathbb{Z}_2$ acts fiber preserving and freely on $E$ and $E^{'}-0$, where 0 stands for the zero section of the bundle $π^{'}:E^{'} \to B$. For a fiber preserving $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant map $f:E \to E^{'}$, we estimate the cohomological dimension of the zero set $Z_f = \{x \in E | f(x)= 0\}.$ As an application, we also estimate the cohomological dimension of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-coincidence set $A_f=\{x \in E | f(x) = f(T(x)) \}$ of a fiber preserving map $f:E \to E^{'}$.
