Analytic height correlation function of rough surfaces derived from light scattering

We derive an analytic expression for the height correlation function of a rough surface based on the inverse wave scattering method of Kirchhoff theory. The expression directly relates the height correlation function to diffuse scattered intensity along a linear path at fixed polar angle. We test the solution by measuring the angular distribution of light scattered from rough silicon surfaces, and comparing extracted height correlation functions to those derived from atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results agree closely with AFM over a wider range of roughness parameters than previous formulations of the inverse scattering problem, while relying less on large-angle scatter data. Our expression thus provides an accurate analytical equation for the height correlation function of a wide range of surfaces based on measurements using a simple, fast experimental procedure.

Cooperative Robust Estimation with Local Performance Guarantees

The paper considers the problem of cooperative estimation for a linear uncertain plant observed by a network of communicating sensors. We take a novel approach by treating the filtering problem from the view point of local sensors while the network interconnections are accounted for via an uncertain signals modelling of estimation performance of other nodes. That is, the information communicated between the nodes is treated as the true plant information subject to perturbations, and each node is endowed with certain believes about these perturbations during the filter design. The proposed distributed filter achieves a suboptimal $H_\infty$ consensus performance. Furthermore, local performance of each estimator is also assessed given additional constraints on the performance of the other nodes. These conditions are shown to be useful in tuning the desired estimation performance of the sensor network.

Nonlinear Attitude Filtering: A Comparison Study

This paper contains a concise comparison of a number of nonlinear attitude filtering methods that have attracted attention in the robotics and aviation literature. With the help of previously published surveys and comparison studies, the vast literature on the subject is narrowed down to a small pool of competitive attitude filters. Amongst these filters is a second-order optimal minimum-energy filter recently proposed by the authors. Easily comparable discretized unit quaternion implementations of the selected filters are provided. We conduct a simulation study and compare the transient behaviour and asymptotic convergence of these filters in two scenarios with different initialization and measurement errors inspired by applications in unmanned aerial robotics and space flight. The second-order optimal minimum-energy filter is shown to have the best performance of all filters, including the industry standard multiplicative extended Kalman filter (MEKF).

Analytical expression for wave scattering from exponential height correlated rough surfaces

Wave scattering from rough surfaces in addition the inverse scattering is an interesting approach to obtain the surface topography properties in various fields. Analytical expression in wave scattering from some known rough surfaces, not only help us to understand the scattering phenomena, but also would prove adequate to be a criterion to measure the information for empirical rough surfaces. For a rough surface with an exponential height correlation function, we derive an analytical expression for the diffused part and expanded it in two asymptotic regimes. We consider one surface as slightly rough and the other as very rough based on the framework of the Kirchhoff theory. In the end, we have measured the role of various Hurst exponents and correlation lengths on scattering intensity in self-affine surfaces. We have shown that by increasing the Hurst exponent from H=0 to H=1, the diffuse scattering decreases with the scattering angle.

Path derivation for a wave scattered model to estimate height correlation function of rough surfaces

The long standing problem on finding the height correlation function is studied by the inverse scattering problem. We propose a new method in the frame work of Kirchhoff theory which we call "path derivation of scattered wave (PDSW)" in order to obtain an expression for direct measurements of the height correlation function. This would provide adequate insight to rough surfaces. The efficiency of this method is due to the fact that the height correlation function could be estimated directly by measurements of the scattered intensity on a suggested path. The model is tested numerically and an experimental setup is suggested.

QED Second Order Corrections on the Speed of Light at Low Temperature

We want to study thermal corrections on the speed of light at low temperature considering temperature dependence of photon vacuum polarization tensor at two-loop level in the standard QED. It is found that the heat bath behaves as a dispersive medium to the propagation of light and reduces its speed proprtional to the second order of temperature. Similiraties and differences with already known calculations which are based on Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and/or those using temperature dependent electromagnetic properties of the medium are discussed.
