A First Glimpse at the Shell Structure beyond 54^{54}Ca: Spectroscopy of 55^{55}K, 55^{55}Ca, and 57^{57}Ca

States in the N=35N=35 and 37 isotopes 55,57^{55,57}Ca have been populated by direct proton-induced nucleon removal reactions from 56,58^{56,58}Sc and 56^{56}Ca beams at the RIBF. In addition, the (p,2p)(p,2p) quasi-free single-proton removal reaction from 56^{56}Ca was studied. Excited states in 55^{55}K, 55^{55}Ca, and 57^{57}Ca were established for the first time via in-beam γγ-ray spectroscopy. Results for the proton and neutron removal reactions from 56^{56}Ca to states in 55^{55}K and 55^{55}Ca for the level energies, excited state lifetimes, and exclusive cross sections agree well with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations using different approaches. The observation of a short-lived state in 57^{57}Ca suggests a transition in the calcium isotopic chain from single-particle dominated states at N=35N=35 to collective excitations at N=37N=37.

Border of the Island of Inversion: Unbound states in 29^{29}Ne

The nucleus 29^{29}Ne is situated at the border of the island of inversion. Despite significant efforts, no bound low-lying intruder f7/2f_{7/2}-state, which would place 29^{29}Ne firmly inside the island of inversion, has yet been observed. Here, the first investigation of unbound states of 29^{29}Ne is reported. The states were populated in 30Ne(p,pn)^{30}\mathrm{Ne}(p,pn) and 30Na(p,2p)^{30}\mathrm{Na}(p,2p) reactions at a beam energy of around 230230 MeV/nucleon, and analyzed in terms of their resonance properties, partial cross sections and momentum distributions. The momentum distributions are compared to calculations using the eikonal, direct reaction model, allowing ℓ\ell-assignments for the observed states. The lowest-lying resonance at an excitation energy of 1.48(4) MeV shows clear signs of a significant ℓ\ell=3-component, giving first evidence for f7/2f_{7/2} single particle strength in 29^{29}Ne. The excitation energies and strengths of the observed states are compared to shell-model calculations using the sdpf-u-mix interaction

N=32\boldsymbol{N=32} shell closure below calcium: Low-lying structure of 50^{50}Ar

Low-lying excited states in the N=32N=32 isotope 50^{50}Ar were investigated by in-beam γγ-ray spectroscopy following proton- and neutron-knockout, multi-nucleon removal, and proton inelastic scattering at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The energies of the two previously reported transitions have been confirmed, and five additional states are presented for the first time, including a candidate for a 3−^- state. The level scheme built using γγγγ coincidences was compared to shell-model calculations in the sd−pfsd-pf model space, and to ab initio predictions based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. Theoretical proton- and neutron-knockout cross sections suggest that two of the new transitions correspond to 2+2^+ states, while the previously proposed 4+4^+ state could also correspond to a 2+2^+ state.

Extending the Southern Shore of the Island of Inversion to 28^{28}F

Detailed spectroscopy of the neutron-unbound nucleus 28^{28}F has been performed for the first time following proton/neutron removal from 29^{29}Ne/29^{29}F beams at energies around 230 MeV/nucleon. The invariant-mass spectra were reconstructed for both the 27^{27}F(∗)+n^{(*)}+n and 26^{26}F(∗)+2n^{(*)}+2n coincidences and revealed a series of well-defined resonances. A near-threshold state was observed in both reactions and is identified as the 28^{28}F ground state, with Sn(28S_n(^{28}F)=−199(6))=-199(6) keV, while analysis of the 2n2n decay channel allowed a considerably improved Sn(27S_n(^{27}F)=1620(60))=1620(60) keV to be deduced. Comparison with shell-model predictions and eikonal-model reaction calculations have allowed spin-parity assignments to be proposed for some of the lower-lying levels of 28^{28}F. Importantly, in the case of the ground state, the reconstructed 27^{27}F+n+n momentum distribution following neutron removal from 29^{29}F indicates that it arises mainly from the 1p3/21p_{3/2} neutron intruder configuration. This demonstrates that the island of inversion around N=20N=20 includes 28^{28}F, and most probably 29^{29}F, and suggests that 28^{28}O is not doubly magic.

PEBSI - A Monte Carlo simulator for bremsstrahlung arising from electrons colliding with thin solid-state targets

We present a Monte Carlo code dedicated to the simulation of bremsstrahlung arising in collisions of polarized electrons with thin target foils. The program consists of an electron transport algorithm taking into account elastic electron-nucleus scattering and inelastic collisions with target electrons as well as a treatment of polarized-electron bremsstrahlung emission. Good agreement is found between the predictions of the electron transport code and data stemming from other simulation programs and experiments. In addition, we present first results from the bremsstrahlung simulation which indicate a significant decrease in the degree of linear polarization of bremsstrahlung even for the thinnest gold targets considered.
