The Search for MeV Electrons 2-45 AU from the Sun with the Alice Instrument Microchannel Plate Detector Aboard New Horizons

The Alice UV spectrograph aboard NASA's New Horizons mission is sensitive to MeV electrons that penetrate the instrument's thin aluminum housing and interact with its microchannel plate detector. We have searched for penetrating electrons at heliocentric distance of 2-45 AU, finding no evidence of discrete events outside of the Jovian magnetosphere. However, we do find a gradual long-term increase in the Alice instrument's global dark count rate at a rate of ~1.5% per year, which may be caused by a heightened gamma-ray background from aging of the spacecraft's radioisotope thermoelectric generator fuel. If this hypothesis is correct, then the Alice instrument's global dark count rate should flatten and then decrease over the next 5-10 years.

Vanishing results for the cohomology of complex toric hyperplane complements

Suppose $\Cal R$ is the complement of an essential arrangement of toric hyperlanes in the complex torus $(\C^*)^n$ and $π=π_1(\Cal R)$. We show that $H^*(\Cal R;A)$ vanishes except in the top degree nn when AA is one of the following systems of local coefficients: (a) a system of nonresonant coefficients in a complex line bundle, (b) the von Neumann algebra $\cnπ$, or (c) the group ring $\zz π$. In case (a) the dimension of HnH^n is $|e(\Cal R)|$ where $e(\Cal R)$ denotes the Euler characteristic, and in case (b) the nthn^{\mathrm{th}} $\eltwo$ Betti number is also $|e(\Cal R)|$.

Weighted L2L^2-cohomology of Coxeter groups

Given a Coxeter system (W,S)(W,S) and a positive real multiparameter $\bq$, we study the "weighted L2L^2-cohomology groups," of a certain simplicial complex ΣΣ associated to (W,S)(W,S). These cohomology groups are Hilbert spaces, as well as modules over the Hecke algebra associated to (W,S)(W,S) and the multiparameter qq. They have a "von Neumann dimension" with respect to the associated "Hecke - von Neumann algebra," NqN_q. The dimension of the ithi^th cohomology group is denoted bqi(Σ)b^i_q(Σ). It is a nonnegative real number which varies continuously with qq. When qq is integral, the bqi(Σ)b^i_q(Σ) are the usual L2L^2-Betti numbers of buildings of type (W,S)(W,S) and thickness qq. For a certain range of qq, we calculate these cohomology groups as modules over NqN_q and obtain explicit formulas for the bqi(Σ)b^i_q(Σ). The range of qq for which our calculations are valid depends on the region of convergence of the growth series of WW. Within this range, we also prove a Decomposition Theorem for NqN_q, analogous to a theorem of L. Solomon on the decomposition of the group algebra of a finite Coxeter group.
