Van Hove Singularity and Lifshitz Transition in Thickness-Controlled Li-Intercalated Graphene

We demonstrate a new method to control the Fermi level around the van Hove singularity (VHS) in Li-intercalated graphene on the SiC substrate. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observed a clear Lifshitz transition in the vicinity of the VHS by increasing the graphene thickness. This behavior is unexpected in a free-standing Li-intercalated graphene model. The calculation including the substrate suggests that the surface state stabilizes the Fermi level around the VHS of the Dirac bands via hybridization. In addition, we found that a sizable Schottky barrier is formed between graphene and the substrate. These properties allow us to explore the electronic phase diagram around the VHS by controlling the thickness and electric field in the device condition.

Electronic structure and phase transition in polar ScFeO3 from First Principles Calculations

The properties of newly discovered polar ScFeO3 with magnetic ordering are examined using Ab initio calculations and symmetry mode analysis. The GGA+U calculation confirms the stability of polar R3c Phase in ScFeO3 and the pressure induced phase transition to non-polar Pnma phase. Octahedron tilting and structural properties as a function of applied pressure have been analyzed. The origin of polar phase is associated with instability of non-polar R-3c phase and group theory using the symmetry mode analysis has been applied to understand this instability as well as the spontaneous polarization of polar R3c phase. The magnetic phase transition shows G-type AFM ordering of Fe3+ ion within Goodenough-Kanamori theory and the possibility of magnetic spin structure has been analyzed by using energy analysis including spin canting possibility.

Magnetodielectric detection of magnetic quadrupole order in Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$ with Cu$_4$O$_{12}$ square cupolas

In vortex-like spin arrangements, multiple spins can combine into emergent multipole moments. Such multipole moments have broken space-inversion and time-reversal symmetries, and can therefore exhibit linear magnetoelectric (ME) activity. Three types of such multipole moments are known: toroidal, monopole, and quadrupole moments. So far, however, the ME-activity of these multipole moments has only been established experimentally for the toroidal moment. Here, we propose a magnetic square cupola cluster, in which four corner-sharing square-coordinated metal-ligand fragments form a noncoplanar buckled structure, as a promising structural unit that carries an ME-active multipole moment. We substantiate this idea by observing clear magnetodielectric signals associated with an antiferroic ME-active magnetic quadrupole order in the real material Ba(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. The present result serves as a useful guide for exploring and designing new ME-active materials based on vortex-like spin arrangements.
