Robust atomic orbital in the cluster magnet LiMoO2

In this study, we present a rutile-related material, LiMoO2, that becomes a cluster magnet and exhibits a spin singlet formation on a preformed molybdenum dimer upon cooling. Unlike ordinary cluster magnets, the atomic dyz orbital robustly survives despite the formation of molecular orbitals, thereby affecting the magnetic properties of the selected material. Such hybrid cluster magnets with the characters of molecular and atomic orbitals realize multiple independent spins on an isolated cluster, leading to an ideal platform to study the isolated spin dimers physics.

One-Third Magnetization Plateau with a Preceding Novel Phase in Volborthite

We have synthesized high-quality single crystals of volborthite, a seemingly distorted kagome antiferromagnet, and carried out high-field magnetization measurements up to 74 T and 51V NMR measurements up to 30 T. An extremely wide 1/3 magnetization plateau appears above 28 T and continues over 74 T at 1.4 K, which has not been observed in previous study using polycrystalline samples. NMR spectra reveal an incommensurate order (most likely a spin-density wave order) below 22 T and a simple spin structure in the plateau phase. Moreover, a novel intermediate phase is found between 23 and 26 T, where the magnetization varies linearly with magnetic field and the NMR spectra indicate an inhomogeneous distribution of the internal magnetic field. This sequence of phases in volborthite bear a striking similarity to those of frustrated spin chains with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor coupling J1 competing with an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2.

Real Space Imaging of Spin Polarons in Zn Doped SrCu2(BO3)2

We report on the real space profile of spin polarons in the quasi two-dimensional frustrated dimer spin system SrCu2(BO3)2 doped with 0.16% of Zn. The 11B nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum exhibits 15 additional boron sites near non-magnetic Zn impurities. With the help of exact diagonalizations of finite clusters, we have deduced from the boron spectrum the distribution of local magnetizations at the Cu sites with fine spatial resolution, providing direct evidence for an extended spin polaron. The results are confronted with those of other experiments performed on doped and undoped samples of SrCu2(BO3)2.

Field-induced incommensurate phase in the strong-rung spin ladder with ferromagnetic legs

We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR measurements of 3-Br-4-F-V [=3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], a strong-rung S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with ferromagnetic leg interactions. We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. 19F-NMR spectra for higher- and lower-temperature phases indicate partial magnetic order and incommensurate long-range order, respectively, evidencing the presence of frustration due to weak interladder couplings.

Search for a spin-nematic phase in the quasi-one-dimensional frustrated magnet LiCuVO$_4$

We have performed NMR experiments on the quasi one-dimensional frustrated spin-1/2 system LiCuVO$_4$ in magnetic fields $H$ applied along the c-axis up to field values near the saturation field $H_{\rm sat}$. For the field range $H_{\rm c2}<H<H_{\rm c3}$ ($μ_0H_{\rm c2}\approx 7.5$T and $μ_0H_{\rm c3} = [40.5 \pm 0.2]$T) the $^{51}$V NMR spectra at $T$ = 380mK exhibit a characteristic double-horn pattern, as expected for a spin-modulated phase in which the magnetic moments of Cu$^{2+}$ ions are aligned parallel to the applied field $H$ and their magnitudes change sinusoidally along the magnetic chains. For higher fields, the $^{51}$V NMR spectral shape changes from the double-horn pattern into a single Lorentzian line. For this Lorentzian line, the internal field at the $^{51}$V nuclei stays constant for $μ_0 H > 41.4$T, indicating that the majority of magnetic moments in LiCuVO$_4$ are already saturated in this field range. This result is inconsistent with the previously observed linear field dependence of the magnetization $M(H)$ for $H_{\rm c3}<H<H_{\rm sat}$ with $μ_0H_{\rm sat}=45$T [L. E. Svistov {\it et al}., JETP Letters {\bf 93}, 21 (2011)]. We argue that the discrepancy is due to non-magnetic defects in the samples. The results of the spin-lattice relaxation rate of $^7$Li nuclei indicate an energy gap which grows with field twice as fast as the Zeeman energy of a single spin, therefore, suggesting that the two-magnon bound state is the lowest energy excitation. The energy gap tends to close at $μ_0H \approx 41$T. Our results suggest that the theoretically predicted spin-nematic phase, if it exists in LiCuVO$_4$, can be established only within the narrow field range $40.5 < μ_0 H < 41.4$T .

A field trip through spin ice

Fractionalisation -- the breaking up of an apparently indivisible microscopic degree of freedom -- is one of the most counterintuitive phenomena in many-body physics. Here we study its most fundamental manifestation in spin ice, the only known fractionalised magnetic compound in 3D: we directly visualise the $1/r^2$ magnetic Coulomb field of monopoles which emerge as the atomic magnetic dipoles fractionalise. We analyse the internal magnetic field distribution, relevant for local experimental probes. In particular, we present new zero-field NMR measurements which exhibit excellent agreement with the calculated lineshapes, noting that this experimental technique can in principle measure directly the monopole density in spin ice. The distribution of field strengths is captured by a simple analytical form which exhibits a low density of low-field sites---in apparent disagreement with reported $μ$SR results. Counterintuitively, the density of low-field locations decreases as the local ferromagnetic correlations imposed by the ice rules weaken.

Tetrahedral Magnetic Order and the Metal-Insulator Transition in the Pyrochlore Lattice of Cd2Os2O7

Cd2Os2O7 shows a peculiar metal-insulator transition at 227 K with magnetic ordering in a frustrated pyrochlore lattice, but its magnetic structure in the ordered state and the transition origin are yet uncovered. We observed a commensurate magnetic peak by resonant x-ray scattering in a high-quality single crystal. X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering experiments confirmed that the transition is not accompanied with any spatial symmetry breaking. We propose a noncollinear all-in/all-out spin arrangement on the tetrahedral network made of Os atoms. Based on this we suggest that the transition is not caused by Slater mechanism as believed earlier but by an alternative mechanism related to the formation of the specific tetrahedral magnetic order on the pyrochlore lattice in the presence of strong spin-orbit interactions.

Compensation of Effective Field in the Field-Induced Superconductor k-(BETS)2FeBr4 Observed by 77Se NMR

We report results of 77Se NMR frequency shift in the normal state of the organic charge-transfer-salt k-(BETS)2FeBr4 which shows magnetic field-induced superconductivity (FISC). From a simple mean field analysis, we determined the field and the temperature dependences of the magnetization m_{pi} of the πconduction electrons on BETS molecules. We found that the Fe spins are antiferromagnetically coupled to the pi electrons and determined the exchange field to be J = -2.3T/mu_B. The exchange field from the fully saturated Fe moments (5 mu_B) is compensated by an external field of 12T. This is close to the central field of the FISC phase, consistent with the Jaccarino-Peter local field-compensation mechanism for FISC (Phys. Rev. Lett. 9, 290 (1962)).

Charge Freezing in Zig-zag Chain Cuprates PrBa2Cu4O8 Observed by Cu Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance

We report nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on the chain Cu sites of PrBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$, a quasi-one-dimensional conductor with a nearly quarter-filled band. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ shows a pronounced peak near 100 K caused by fluctuations of electric field gradient (EFG). Similar peak was observed for the spin-echo decay rate $1/T_{2}$, however, at a different temperature near 50 K. These results and broadening of the NQR spectrum at low temperatures indicate that slow charge fluctuations of either electronic or ionic origin freeze gradually at low temperatures.

Cu nuclear spin-spin coupling in the dimer singlet state in SrCu2(BO3)2

We report results of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments in SrCu2(BO3)2, a quasi two-dimensional spin system with a singlet ground state. When magnetic field is applied along the c-axis, each of the quadrupole split Cu resonance lines splits further into four lines. The spin-echo intensity for some of the split lines oscillates against the separation time between the pai/2 and the pai rf-pulses. These phenomena are due to strong nuclear spin-spin coupling mediated by the electronic spin system, which exists only within a pair of nuclei. Thus the results provides direct evidence for the dimer singlet gorund state in this material.
