Fermi surface instabilities in CeRh2Si2 at high magnetic field and pressure

We present thermoelectric power (TEP) studies under pressure and high magnetic field in the antiferromagnet CeRh2Si2 at low temperature. Under magnetic field, large quantum oscillations are observed in the TEP, S(H), in the antiferromagnetic phase. They suddenly disappear when entering in the polarized paramagnetic (PPM) state at Hc pointing out an important reconstruction of the Fermi surface (FS). Under pressure, S/T increases strongly of at low temperature near the critical pressure Pc, where the AF order is suppressed, implying the interplay of a FS change and low energy excitations driven by spin and valence fluctuations. The difference between the TEP signal in the PPM state above Hc and in the paramagnetic state (PM) above Pc can be explained by different FS. Band structure calculations at P = 0 stress that in the AF phase the 4f contribution at the Fermi level (EF) is weak while it is the main contribution in the PM domain. By analogy to previous work on CeRu2Si2, in the PPM phase of CeRh2Si2 the 4f contribution at EF will drop.

Emergent Rank-5 'Nematic' Order in URu2Si2

Novel electronic states resulting from entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom are hallmarks of strongly correlated f-electron systems. A spectacular example is the so-called 'hidden-order' phase transition in the heavy-electron metal URu2Si2, which is characterized by the huge amount of entropy lost at T_{HO}=17.5K. However, no evidence of magnetic/structural phase transition has been found below T_{HO} so far. The origin of the hidden-order phase transition has been a long-standing mystery in condensed matter physics. Here, based on a first-principles theoretical approach, we examine the complete set of multipole correlations allowed in this material. The results uncover that the hidden-order parameter is a rank-5 multipole (dotriacontapole) order with 'nematic' E^- symmetry, which exhibits staggered pseudospin moments along the [110] direction. This naturally provides comprehensive explanations of all key features in the hidden-order phase including anisotropic magnetic excitations, nearly degenerate antiferromagnetic-ordered state, and spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking.

Dynamical mean field theory of correlated gap formation in Pu monochalcogenides

The correlated Kondo insulator state of the plutonium monochalcogenides is investigated using the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and the local density approximation +U (LDA+U). The DMFT-dynamical fluctuations lead to a correlated insulator state at elevated temperature, in sharp contrast to the static LDA+U approach that fails to reproduce both the insulating behavior and anomalous lattice constant. The DMFT conversely predicts the experimentally observed anomalous increase of the gap with pressure and explains the lattice constant very well.
