Role of impurity clusters for the current-driven motion of magnetic Skyrmions

We study how impurities influence the current-induced dynamics of magnetic Skyrmions moving in a racetrack geometry. For this, we solve numerically the generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation extended by the current-induced spin transfer torque. In particular, we investigate two classes of impurities, non-conducting and magnetic impurities. The former are magnetically rigid objects and yield to an inhomogeneous current density over the racetrack which we determine separately by solving the fundamental electrostatic equations. In contrast, magnetic impurities leave the applied current density homogeneous throughout the stripe. Depending on parameters, we observe four different scenarios of Skyrmion motions in the presence of disorder, the Skyrmion decay, the pinning, the creation of additional Skyrmions, and ordinary Skyrmion passage. We calculate and discuss phase diagrams in dependence of the impurity concentration and radii of the impurities.

Steering of the Skyrmion Hall Angle By Gate Voltage

Magnetic skyrmions can be driven by an applied spin-polarized electron current which exerts a spin-transfer torque on the localized spins constituting the skyrmion. However, the longitudinal dynamics is plagued by the skyrmion Hall effect which causes the skyrmions to acquire a transverse velocity component. We show how to use spin-orbit interaction to control the skyrmion Hall angle and how the interplay of spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques can lead to a complete suppression of the transverse motion. Since the spin-orbit torques can be controlled all-electronically by a gate voltage, the skyrmion motion can be steered all-electronically on a broad racetrack at high speed and conceptually new writing and gating operations can be realized.

Carrier mediated interlayer exchange, ground state phase diagrams and transition temperatures of magnetic thin films

We investigate the influence of the carrier density and other parameters on the interlayer exchange in magnetic thin film systems. The system consists of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic layers where the carriers are allowed to move from layer to layer. For the ferromagnetic layers we use the Kondo-lattice model to describe interactions between itinerant electrons and local moments. The electrons' properties are calculated by a Green's function's equation of motion approach while the magnetization of the local moments is determined by a minimization of the free energy. As results we present magnetic phase diagrams and the interlayer exchange over a broad parameter range. Additionally we can calculate the transition temperatures for different alignments of the ferromagnetic layers' magnetizations.

Curie temperatures of the concentrated and diluted Kondo-lattice model as a possible candidate to describe magnetic semiconductors and metals

We present a theory to model carrier mediated ferromagnetism in concentrated or diluted local moment systems. The electronic subsystem of the Kondo lattice model is described by a combined equation of motion / coherent potential approximation method. Doing this we can calculate the free energy of the system and its minimum according to the magnetization of the local moments. Thus also the Curie temperature can be determined and its dependence on important model parameters. We get qualitative agreement with the Curie temperatures' experimental values of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As for a proper hole density.

The ground state phase diagram of the diluted ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model

We investigate the existence of several (anti-)ferromagnetic phases in the diluted ferromagnetic Kondo-lattice model, i.e. ferromagnetic coupling of local moment and electron spin. To do this we use a coherent potential approximation (CPA) with a dynamical alloy analogy. For the CPA we need effective potentials, which we get first from a mean-field approximation. To improve this treatment we use in the next step a more appropriate moment conserving decoupling approach and compare both methods. The different magnetic phases are modelled by defining two magnetic sublattices. As a result we present zero-temperature phase diagrams according to the important model parameters and different dilutions.
