Quantizing a solitonic string

Quite often the zero mode dynamics on solitonic vortices are described by a non-conformal effective world-sheet sigma model (WSSM). We address the problem of solitonic string quantization in this case. As well-known, only crfitical strings with superconformal WSSMs are self-consistent in ultra-violet (UV) domain. Thus, we look for the appropriate UV completion of the low-energy non-conformal WSSM. We ague that for the solitonic strings supported in well-defined bulk theories the UV complete WSSM has a UV fixed point which can be used for string quantization. As an example, we consider BPS non-Abelian vortices supported by four-dimensional (4D) \ntwo SQCD with the gauge group U$(N)$ and $N_f$ quark multiplets where $N_f\ge N$. In addition to translational moduli the non-Abelian vortex under consideration carries orientational and size moduli. Their low-energy dynamics are described by a two-dimensional \ntwot supersymmetric weighted model, namely, $\mathbb{WCP}(N, N_f-N)$. Given our UV completion of this WSSM we find its UV fixed point. The latter defines a superconformal WSSM. We observe two cases in which this conformal WSSM, combined with the free theory for four translational moduli, has ten-dimensional target space required for superstrings to be critical.

Dynamically Emergent Flavor in a Confining Theory with Unbroken Chiral Symmetry

I discuss "truncated" QCD studied recently by Glozman et al. through numerical simulations. For two flavors it was observed that truncation restores the full chiral U(2)\times U(2) symmetry of the Lagrangian. Moreover, additional enhancement of the above symmetry connecting representations with distinct Lorentz spins was observed. I argue that the chiral symmetry restoration in a confining theory could entail emergent (extra) dynamical flavors which would show up in the spectrum of color-singlet particles provided their mass \neq 0. As an example, I consider truncated QCD with a single massless Dirac quark. Assuming the validity of the above observations,I demonstrate how a dynamical SU(2)_{fl} symmetry could emerge for massive spin-1 mesons without contradicting general principles.

Heterotic Non-Abelian String of a Finite Length

We consider non-Abelian strings in N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U$(N)$ gauge group and $N_f=N$ quark flavors deformed by a mass term for the adjoint matter. This deformation breaks N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. Dynamics of orientational zero modes on the string world sheet are described then by CP$(N-1)$ model with N=(0,2) supersymmetry. We study the string of a finite length $L$ assuming compactification on a cylinder (periodic boundary conditions). The world-sheet theory is solved in the large-$N$ approximation. We find a rich phase structure in the $(L, \,u)$ plane where $u$ is a deformation parameter. At large $L$ and intermediate $u$ we find a phase with broken $Z_{2N}$ symmetry, $N$ vacua and a mass gap. At large values of $L$ and $u$ still larger we have the $Z_{2N}$-symmetric phase with a single vacuum and massless fermions. In both phases N=(0,2) supersymmetry is spontaneously broken. We also observe a phase with broken SU$(N)\;$ symmetry at small $L$. In the latter phase the mass gap vanishes and the vacuum energy is zero in the leading $1/N$ approximation. However, we expect that $1/N$ corrections will break N=(0,2) supersymmetry. We also discuss how this rich phase structure matches the N=(2,2) limit in which the world-sheet theory has a single phase with the mass gap independent of $L$.

Introduction to "Standing together in Troubled Times"

This Introduction opens the book {\sl Standing Together in Troubled Times} which presents a story of friendship between Wolfgang Pauli, one of the greatest theoretical physicists of the 20th century, and Charlotte Houtermans. They met at the very onset of the quantum era, in the late 1920s in Germany where Charlotte was a physics student at Göttingen University. At that time Göttingen was right at the heart of groundbreaking developments in physics. Both Pauli and Houtermans personally knew major participants in the quantum revolution. Caught between two evils -- German National Socialism and Soviet Communism -- Charlotte Houtermans would have likely perished if it were not for the brotherhood of physicists: Niels Bohr, Wolfgang Pauli, Albert Einstein, James Franck, Max Born, Robert Oppenheimer and many other noted scientists who tried to save friends and colleagues (either leftist sympathizers or Jews) who were in mortal danger of becoming entrapped in a simmering pre-WWII Europe. This book is based on newly discovered documents from the Houtermans family archive, including Pauli's numerous letters to Houtermans, her correspondence with other great physicists, her diaries, and interviews with her children. Almost all documents presented in this book are being published for the first time.

Critical String from Non-Abelian Vortex in Four Dimensions

In a class of non-Abelian solitonic vortex strings supported in certain N=2 super-Yang-Mills theories we search for the vortex which can behave as a critical fundamental string. We use the Polchinski-Strominger criterion of the ultraviolet completeness. We identify an appropriate four-dimensional bulk theory: it has the U(2) gauge group, the Fayet-Iliopoulos term and four flavor hypermultiplets. It supports semilocal vortices with the world-sheet theory for orientational (size) moduli described by the weighted CP(2,2) model. The latter is superconformal. Its target space is six-dimensional. The overall Virasoro central charge is critical. We show that the world-sheet theory on the vortex supported in this bulk model is the bona fide critical string.

Derivation of the exact expression for the D function in N=1 SQCD

We discuss various details of our derivation of the exact expression for the Adler D function in N=1 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD). This exact formula relates the D function to anomalous dimensions of the matter superfields. Our perturbative derivation refers to the D function defined in terms of the bare coupling constant in the case of using the higher covariant derivative regularization. The exact expression for this function is obtained by direct summation of supergraphs to all orders in the non-Abelian coupling constant. As we argued previously, our formula should be valid beyond perturbation theory too. The perturbative result we present here coincides with the general formula order by order. We discuss consequences for N=1 SQCD in the conformal window. It is noted that our exact relation can allow one to determine the (infrared) critical anomalous dimension of the Seiberg M field present in the dual theory.

Introduction to Collection "Physics in a Mad World" (an Abridged Version)

This Introduction opens the collection "Physics in A Mad World" devoted to two outstanding physicists whose destinies were deeply intertwined with the tragedies and drama of the times in which they lived. Friedrich (Fritz) Houtermans was the first to understand why stars shine. He endured Stalin's prisons in the Moscow of the late 1930s, then faced the Gestapo in Germany. In the early 1970s, Yuri Golfand was among the discoverers of theoretical supersymmetry, a concept which completely changed mathematical physics in the 21st century. After his discovery, his research institution in Moscow fired him. He knew the humiliations of the Brezhnev regime firsthand, blacklisted and unemployed for the rest of the decade due to his desire to emigrate to Israel. This introduction gives a detailed review of background and supplemental information to the events described in the three main essays authored by V. Frenkel, B. Eskin and B. Bolotovsky who presented captivating stories of the physicists' lives, as told by their friends, colleagues and relatives.

IR Renormalons vs. Operator Product Expansion in Supersymmetric and Related Gauge Theories

We use the "conspiracy" between infrared (IR) renormalons and condensates in the operator product expansion for correlation functions to make predictions concerning the structure of singularities in the Borel plane for the perturbative series in quantum field theories with different levels of supersymmetry. The same conspiracy can be used for establishing the absence of condensates or IR renormalons in gauge theories with an IR conformal regime or fully Higgsed gauge theories. The absence of the renormalon-induced factorial divergence implies that instanton contributions (where present) must be well-defined. We show that the conventional bubble-chain method for detecting renormalon-induced factorial divergences in these theories is not sufficient.

Large-N Solution of the Heterotic CP(N-1) Model with Twisted Masses

We address a number of unanswered questions in the N=(0,2)-deformed CP(N-1) model with twisted masses. In particular, we complete the program of solving CP(N-1) model with twisted masses in the large-N limit. In hep-th/0512153 nonsupersymmetric version of the model with the Z_N symmetric twisted masses was analyzed in the framework of Witten's method. In arXiv:0803.0698 this analysis was extended: the large-N solution of the heterotic N=(0,2) CP(N-1) model with no twisted masses was found. Here we solve this model with the twisted masses switched on. Dynamical scenarios at large and small m are studied (m is the twisted mass scale). We found three distinct phases and two phase transitions on the m plane. Two phases with the spontaneously broken Z_N-symmetry are separated by a phase with unbroken Z_N. This latter phase is characterized by a unique vacuum and confinement of all U(1) charged fields ("quarks"). In the broken phases (one of them is at strong coupling) there are N degenerate vacua and no confinement, similarly to the situation in the N=(2,2) model. Supersymmetry is spontaneously broken everywhere except a circle |m|=Λin the Z_N-unbroken phase. Related issues are considered. In particular, we discuss the mirror representation for the heterotic model in a certain limiting case.

Lessons from supersymmetry: "Instead-of-Confinement" Mechanism

We review physical scenarios in different vacua of N=2 supersymmetric QCD deformed by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter. This deformation breaks supersymmetry down to N=1 and, at large μ, the theory flows to N=1 SQCD. We focus on dynamical scenarios which can serve as prototypes of what we observe in real-world QCD. The so-called r=N vacuum is especially promising in this perspective. In this vacuum an "instead-of-confinement" phase was identified previously, which is qualitatively close to the conventional QCD confinement: the quarks and gauge bosons screened at weak coupling, at strong coupling evolve into monopole-antimonopole pairs confined by non-Abelian strings. We review genesis of this picture.

More on the Abrikosov Strings with Non-Abelian Moduli

We continue explorations of deformed Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) strings, with non-Abelian moduli on the world sheet. In a simple model with an extra field we find classically stable ANO and non-Abelian strings. The tension of the latter is a few percent lower than the tension of the ANO string. Then we calculate the interpolating field configuration. Once the kink mass $M_k$ and the difference of tensions $ΔT$ are found we calculate the decay rate of the ANO string with a higher tension ("false vacuum") into the non-Abelian string with the lower tension ("genuine vacuum") through the "bubble" formation in the quasiclassical approximation.

N=1 Duality in the Chiral Limit from N=2 Duality

We study a deformation of N=2 supersymmetric QCD with U(N) gauge group and N_f quark flavors induced by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter which breaks supersymmetry down to N=1 QCD. Recently this deformation was shown to lead to a weakly coupled dual theory only in two particular sets of vacua: the r=N vacuum and the so-called zero vacua which can be found at r< N_f-N, where r is the number of condensed quarks. For small quark masses and intermediate values of μthe gauge group of the dual theory is U(N_f-N)\times U(1)^{2N-N_f} where the Abelian sector is heavy and can be integrated out. However, at larger values of μthe Abelian sector enters the strong coupling regime. We show that the 't Hooft matching conditions in the chiral limit require the Seiberg neutral meson field M from this sector to become light. In the r=N vacuum M is constructed of a monopole and antimonopole connected by a confining magnetic strings while in the zero vacua it is built of a quark and antiquark connected by a confining electric strings.

Quantum Deformation of the Effective Theory on Non-Abelian string and 2D-4D correspondence

We explore non-Abelian strings in the r=N-1 vacuum of N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the gauge group U(N) and N_f flavors of quarks (N_f\geq N), where r is the number of condensed quarks. N=2 supersymmetry is broken down to N=1 by a small mass term for the adjoint matter. We discover that the low-energy two-dimensional theory on the string world-sheet receives nonperturbative corrections from the bulk, through the bulk gaugino condensate. This is in contradistinction with the r=N vacuum situation, in which nonperturbative effects on the world sheet are determined by internal dynamics of the world-sheet theory. The 2D-4D correspondence (the coincidence of spectra of two-dimensional kinks and four-dimensional monopoles) remains valid in the BPS sector. Nonperturbative bulk effects deforming the weighted CP model on the world sheet are found by virtue of the method of resolvents suggested by Gaiotto, Gukov and Seiberg for surface defects. In the r=N vacuum the gaugino condensate in the bulk vanishes, and there are no "outside" nonperturbative corrections on the world sheet.

Resurgence, Operator Product Expansion, and Remarks on Renormalons in Supersymmetric Yang-Mills

I discuss similarities and differences between the resurgence program in quantum mechanics and the operator product expansion in strongly coupled Yang-Mills theories. In ${\mathcal N}=1$ super-Yang-Mills renormalons possess peculiar features that make them different from renormalons in QCD. Their conventional QCD interpretation does not seem to be applicable in supersymmetric Yang-Mills in a straightforward manner.

Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen string with Non-Abelian Moduli and "Spin-Orbit" Interaction

It is generally believed that the spontaneous breaking of the Poincaré group by flux tubes (strings) generate only two zero modes localized on the string and associated with the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance (the so-called Low-Manohar argument). Being perfectly true in many instances it is nevertheless nonuniversal, and have to be amended in the case of order parameters carrying spatial indices. We show that under certain circumstances additional zero (or quasizero) modes can appear due to spin symmetry.

Degeneracy between Abelian and Non-Abelian Strings

In a model that supports both Abelian (Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen) and non-Abelian strings we analyze the parameter space to find examples in which these strings not only coexist but are degenerate in tension. We prove that both solutions are locally stable, i.e there are no negative modes in the string background. The tension degeneracy is achieved at the classical level and is expected to be lifted by quantum corrections. The set up of the model, analogous to that of Witten's superconducting cosmic strings, had been extended to include non-Abelian strings.

Detailing N=1 Seiberg's Duality through the Seiberg-Witten Solution of N=2

Starting from the Seiberg-Witten solution of N=2 SQCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f quark flavors we construct the so-called μ-dual N=1 theory in the r vacua in the regime analogous to that existing to the left of the left edge of the Seiberg conformal window (here r is the number of condensed quarks). The strong-weak coupling duality is shown to exist in the so-called zero vacua which can be found at r< N_f-N. We show that the μ-dual theory matches the Seiberg dual in the zero vacua.

Hybrid r-Vacua in N=2 Supersymmetric QCD: Universal Condensate Formula

We derive an exact unified formula for all condensates (quark and monopole) in the hybrid r vacua in N=2 supersymmetric QCD slightly deformed by a μA^2 term. The gauge group is assumed to be U(N) and the number of the quark flavors N_f subject to the condition N< N_f < 2N. In the r vacua r quarks and N-r-1 monopoles from non-overlapping subgroups of U(N) develop vacuum expectation values (r<N). We then briefly review possible dynamical regimes (confinement, screening, and "instead of confinement") in the hybrid r vacua in μ-deformed N=2 SQCD (the small-μlimit).

New and Old about Renormalons: in Memoriam Kolya Uraltsev

I summarize what we know of renormalons from the 1970s and 80s: their uses and theoretical status. It is emphasized that renormalons in QCD are closely related to the Wilsonean operator product expansion (OPE) - a setup ideally suited for dealing with the factorially divergent series reflecting infrared dynamics. I discuss a breakthrough proposal due to Uraltsev et al. to use renormalons to evaluate nonperturbative (power) corrections in the processes without OPE. Some fresh ideas which were put forward recently are briefly discussed too, with emphasis on a possible relationship between resurgence via trans-series and OPE. This article is devoted to the memory of my friend Kolya Uraltsev. I should emphasize that these are my personal recollections. Other people who closely knew Kolya may or may not agree with my opinions.

A Remark on Supersymmetric Bubbles and Spectrum Crossover

Using an exact expression for the domain wall tension in a supersymmetric model we show that a spectrum crossover takes place in passing from weak to strong coupling. In the weak coupling regime elementary excitations are the lightest states, while in the strong coupling regime solitonic objects of a special type -- bubbles -- assume the role of the lightest states. The crossover occurs at λ^2/(4π) \sim 0.4.

Confronting Seiberg's Duality with r Duality in N=1 Supersymmetric QCD

Systematizing our results on r duality obtained previously we focus on comparing r duality with the generalized Seiberg duality in the r vacua of N=2 and N=1 super-Yang-Mills theories with the U(N) gauge group and N_f matter flavors (N_f>N). The number of condensed (s)quarks r is assumed to be in the interval 2N_f/3 < r \le N. To pass to N=1 we introduce an N=2-breaking deformation, a mass term μfor the adjoint matter, eventually decoupling the adjoint matter in the limit of large μ. If one starts from a large value of the parameter ξ\simμm, where the original theory is at weak coupling, and decreases ξone hits a a crossover transition from weak to strong coupling (here m is a typical value of the quark masses). Below this transition the original theory is described in terms of a weakly coupled infrared-free r dual theory with the U(N_f-r) gauge group and N_f light quark-like dyon flavors. Dyon condensation leads to confinement of monopoles, defying a naive expectation of quark confinement. The quarks and gauge bosons of the original theory are in an "instead-of-confinement" phase. The r and Seiberg dualities are demonstrated to coincide in the r=N vacua. In the (2/3) N_f <r<N vacua two dualities do not match. In this window Seiberg's dual is at strong coupling while our r-dual model is at weak coupling. Thus, we can speak of triality. Seiberg's dual solution at weak coupling reappears again at r<N_f-N< (1/3) N_f$.

How Chiral Symmetry Breaking Affects the Spectrum of the Light-Heavy Mesons in the 't Hooft Model

We find the spectrum and wave functions of the heavy-light mesons in $(1 + 1)$-dimensional QCD in the 't Hooft limit, both in the rest frame, using the Coulomb (axial) gauge, and on the light cone. Our emphasis is on the effects of chiral symmetry breaking on the spectrum. While dynamical equations in both cases look different, the results for the spectrum are identical. The chiral symmetry breaking is clearly seen from the gap and Bethe--Salpeter equations in the laboratory frame. At the same time, while vacuum is trivial on the light cone (no chiral condensate), the effects of the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry manifest themselves in the same way, as it follows from the coincidence of the spectra obtained from the laboratory-frame Bethe--Salpeter equation on the one hand, and the light-cone 't Hooft-type equation on the other.

r Duality and "Instead-of-Confinement" Mechanism in N=1 Supersymmetric QCD

We consider N=2 SQCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f flavors (N_f>N) perturbed by an N=2 breaking deformation - a small mass term μfor the adjoint matter. We study r-vacua, with the constraint $2N_f/3 < r \le N. At large values of the parameter ξ\simμm (m is a typical value of the quark masses) r quark flavors condense, by construction. The effective low-energy theory with the gauge group U(r)\times U(1)^{N-r} is at weak coupling. Upon reducing ξthe original theory undergoes a crossover transition from weak to strong coupling. As the original theory becomes strongly coupled, at low energies it is described by a weakly coupled infrared-free dual theory with the gauge group U(N_f-r)\times U(1)^{N-N_f+r} and N_f light dyon flavors. These dyons condense triggering formation of non-Abelian strings which still confine monopoles, rather than quarks, contrary to naive duality arguments. "Instead-of-confinement" mechanism for quarks and gauge bosons of the original theory takes place: screened quarks and gauge bosons of the original theory decay, on curves of the marginal stability (CMS), into confined monopole-antimonopole pairs that form stringy mesons. Next, we increase the deformation parameter μthus decoupling the adjoint fields. Then our theory flows to N=1 SQCD. The gauge group of the dual theory becomes U(N_f-r). We show that the dual theory is weakly coupled if we are sufficiently close to the Argyres-Douglas point. The "instead-of-confinement" mechanism for quarks and gauge bosons survives in the limit of large μ. It determines low-energy non-Abelian dynamics in the r-vacua of N=1 SQCD.

Confined Magnetic Monopoles in Dense QCD

Non-Abelian strings exist in the color-flavor locked phase of dense QCD. We show that kinks appearing in the world-sheet theory on these strings, in the form of the kink-antikink bound pairs, are the magnetic monopoles --- descendants of the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles surviving in such a special form in dense QCD. Our consideration is heavily based on analogies and inspiration coming from certain supersymmetric non-Abelian theories. This is the first ever analytic demonstration that objects unambiguously identifiable as the magnetic monopoles are "native" to non-Abelian Yang-Mills theories (albeit our analysis extends only to the phase of the monopole confinement and has nothing to say about their condensation). Technically our demonstration becomes possible due to the fact that low-energy dynamics of the non-Abelian strings in dense QCD is that of the orientational zero modes. It is described by an effective two-dimensional CP(2) model on the string world sheet. The kinks in this model representing confined magnetic monopoles are in a highly quantum regime.

Description of the Heterotic String Solutions in U(N) SQCD

We continue the study of heterotic non-Abelian BPS-saturated flux tubes (strings). Previously, such solutions were obtained [1] in a particular U(2) gauge theory: N=2 supersymmetric QCD deformed by superpotential terms of a special type breaking N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. Here we generalize the previous results to U(N) gauge theories. As was suggested by Edalati and Tong [2], the string world sheet theory is a heterotic N=(0,2) sigma model, with the CP(N-1) target space for bosonic fields and an extra right-handed fermion which couples to the fermion fields of the N=(2,2) CP(N-1) model. We derive the heterotic N=(0,2) world sheet model directly from the U(N) bulk theory. Parameters of the bulk theory are related to those of the world sheet theory. Qualitatively this relation turns out to be the same as in the U(2) case.

Effective World-Sheet Theory for Non-Abelian Semilocal Strings in N = 2 Supersymmetric QCD

We consider non-Abelian semilocal strings (vortices, or vortex-strings) arising in N=2 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory with Nf=N+Ñ matter hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation (quarks), and a Fayet-Iliopoulos term ξ. We present, for the first time ever, a systematic field-theoretic derivation of the world-sheet theory for such strings, describing dynamics of both, orientational and size zero modes. Our derivation is complete in the limit, ln(L)\rightarrow \infty, where L is an infrared (IR) regulator in the transverse plane. In this limit the world-sheet theory is obtained exactly. It is presented by a so far unknown N=2 two-dimensional sigma model, to which we refer as the zn model, with or without twisted masses. Alternative formulations of the zn model are worked out: conventional and extended gauged formulations and a geometric formulation. We compare the exact metric of the zn model with that of the weighted CP(Nf-1) model conjectured by Hanany and Tong, through D-branes, as the world-sheet theory for the non-Abelian semilocal strings. The Hanany-Tong set-up has no parallel for the field-theoretic IR parameter and metrics of the weighted CP(Nf-1) model and zn model are different. Still their quasiclassical excitation spectra coincide.

Higgs Decay into Two Photons through the W-boson Loop: No Decoupling in the m_W --> 0 Limit

We reanalyze the W-boson loop in the amplitude of the Higgs decay into two photons to show the absence of decoupling in the limit of massless W bosons, m_W --> 0. The Higgs coupling to longitudinal polarizations survive in this limit and generates a nonvanishing contribution in the $H\to γγ$ decay. This shows that the recent claim of decoupling by R. Gastmans, S.L. Wu, and T.T. Wu is incorrect, and the old calculations for the two photon decay well known in the literature are valid.

N=(0,2) Supersymmetry and a Nonrenormalization Theorem

In this paper we continue the study of perturbative renormalizations in an $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ supersymmetric model. Previously we analyzed one-loop graphs in the heterotically deformed CP$(N-1)$ models. Now we extend the analysis of the $β$ function and appropriate $Z$ factors to two, and, in some instances, all loops in the limiting case $g^2\to 0$. The field contents of the model, as well as the heterotic coupling, remain the same, but the target space becomes flat. In this toy $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ model we construct supergraph formalism. We show, by explicit calculations up to two-loop order, that the $β$ function is one-loop-exact. We derive a nonrenormalization theorem valid to all orders. This nonrenormalization theorem is rather unusual since it refers to (formally) $D$ terms. It is based on the fact that supersymmetry combined with target space symmetries and "flavor"? symmetries is sufficient to guarantee the absence of loop corrections. We analyze the supercurrent supermultiplet (i.e., the hypercurrent) providing further evidence in favor of the absence of higher loops in the $β$ function.

Non-Abelian Duality and Confinement: from N=2 to N=1 Supersymmetric QCD

Recently we discovered and discussed non-Abelian duality in the quark vacua of N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory with the U(N) gauge group and N_f flavors (N_f>N). Both theories from the dual pair support non-Abelian strings which confine monopoles. Now we introduce an N=2-breaking deformation, a mass term μ{\mathcal A}^2 for the adjoint fields. Starting from a small deformation we eventually make it large which enforces complete decoupling of the adjoint fields. We show that the above non-Abelian duality fully survives in the limit of N=1 SQCD, albeit some technicalities change. For instance, non-Abelian strings which used to be BPS-saturated in the N=2 limit, cease to be saturated in N=1 SQCD. Our duality is a distant relative of Seiberg's duality in N=1 SQCD. Both share some common features but have drastic distinctions. This is due to the fact that Seiberg's duality apply to the monopole rather than quark vacua. More specifically, in our theory we deal with N< N_f<3/2 N massive quark flavors. We consider the vacuum in which N squarks condense. Then we identify a crossover transition from weak to strong coupling. At strong coupling we find a dual theory, U(N_f-N) SQCD, with N_f light dyon flavors. Dyons condense triggering the formation of non-Abelian strings which confine monopoles. Screened quarks and gauge bosons of the original theory decay into confined monopole-antimonopole pairs and form stringy mesons.

QCD Sum Rules: Bridging the Gap between Short and Large Distances

I discuss aspects of the QCD sum rule method which attracted theorists' attention in earnest at a relatively late stage and are not yet fully solved. At first I briefly review such general topics as the structure of the operator product expansion in QCD and intrinsic limitations of the quark-hadron duality concept. In the second part I comment on holographic constructions - a focus of the current efforts to say something new on QCD at strong coupling. Of particular interest to me is the recent derivation of the vacuum magnetic susceptibility due to Son and Yamamoto. Remarkably, their result is the same as that obtained previously by Vainshtein in the field-theoretic framework. For some reasons, the Vainshtein formula, unexpectedly, is not successfull numerically. This is a slightly modified version of the talk delivered at 15th International QCD Conference "QCD 10," June 28 - July 3, 2010, Montpellier, France.

Higher Winding Strings and Confined Monopoles in N=2 SQCD

We consider composite string solutions in N=2 SQCD with the gauge group U(N), the Fayet--Iliopoulos term ξ\neq 0 and N (s)quark flavors. These bulk theories support non-Abelian strings and confined monopoles identified with kinks in the two-dimensional world-sheet theory. Similar and more complicated kinks (corresponding to composite confined monopoles) must exist in the world-sheet theories on composite strings. In a bid to detect them we analyze the Hanany--Tong (HT) model, focusing on a particular example of N=2. Unequal quark mass terms in the bulk theory result in the twisted masses in the N=(2,2) HT model. For spatially coinciding 2-strings, we find three distinct minima of potential energy, corresponding to three different 2-strings. Then we find BPS-saturated kinks interpolating between each pair of vacua. Two kinks can be called elementary. They emanate one unit of the magnetic flux and have the same mass as the conventional 't Hooft--Polyakov monopole on the Coulomb branch of the bulk theory (ξ=0). The third kink represents a composite bimonopole, with twice the minimal magnetic flux. Its mass is twice the mass of the elementary confined monopole. We find instantons in the HT model, and discuss quantum effects in composite strings at strong coupling. In addition, we study the renormalization group flow in this model.

Large-N Solution of the Heterotic N=(0,2) Two-Dimensional CP(N-1) Model

We continue explorations of non-Abelian strings, focusing on the solution of a heterotic deformation of the CP(N-1) model with an extra right-handed fermion field and N=(0,2) supersymmetry. This model emerges as a low-energy theory on the worldsheet of the BPS-saturated flux tubes (strings) in N=2 supersymmetric QCD deformed by a superpotential of a special type breaking N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. Using large-N expansion we solve this model to the leading order in 1/N. Our solution exhibits spontaneous supersymmetry breaking for all values of the deformation parameter. We identify the Goldstino field. The discrete Z_{2N} symmetry is shown to be spontaneously broken down to Z_2; therefore, the worldsheet model has N strictly degenerate vacua (with nonvanishing vacuum energy). Thus, the heterotic CP(N-1) model is in the deconfinement phase. We can compare this dynamical pattern, on the one hand, with the N=(2,2) CP(N-1) model which has N degenerate vacua with unbroken supersymmetry, and, on the other hand, with nonsupersymmetric CP(N-1) model with split quasivacua and the Coulomb/confining phase. We determine the mass spectrum of the heterotic CP(N-1) model in the large-N limit.

Moduli Space Potentials for Heterotic non-Abelian Flux Tubes: Weak Deformation

We consider N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U(N) gauge group (with no Fayet-Iliopoulos term) and N_f flavors of massive quarks deformed by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter, W=μA^2, assuming that N\leq N_f<2N. This deformation breaks N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. This theory supports non-Abelian flux tubes (strings) which are stabilized by W. They are referred to as F-term stabilized strings. We focus on the studies of such strings in the vacuum in which N squarks condense, at small μ, so that the Z_N strings preserve, in a sense, their BPS nature. We calculate string tensions both in the classical and quantum regimes. Then we translate our results for the tensions in terms of the effective low-energy weighted CP(N_f-1) model on the string world sheet. The bulk μ-deformation makes this theory N= (0,2) supersymmetric heterotic weighted CP(N_f-1) model in two dimensions. We find the deformation potential on the world sheet. This significantly expands the class of the heterotically deformed CP models emerging on the string world sheet compared to that suggested by Edalati and Tong. Among other things, we show that nonperturbative quantum effects in the bulk theory are exactly reproduced by the quantum effects in the world-sheet theory.

Non-Abelian Confinement in N=2 Supersymmetric QCD: Duality and Kinks on Confining Strings

Recently we observed a crossover transition (in the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter) from weak to strong coupling in N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f > N quark flavors. At strong coupling this theory can be described by a dual non-Abelian weakly coupled SQCD with the dual gauge group U(N_f-N) and N_f light dyon flavors. Both theories support non-Abelian strings. We continue the study of confinement dynamics in these theories, in particular, metamorphoses of excitation spectra, from a different side. A number of results obtained previously are explained, enhanced and supplemented by analyzing the world-sheet dynamics on the non-Abelian confining strings. The world-sheet theory is the two-dimensional N=(2,2) supersymmetric weighted CP(N_f-1) model. We explore the vacuum structure and kinks on the world sheet, corresponding to confined monopoles in the bulk theory. We show that (in the equal quark mass limit) these kinks fall into the fundamental representation of the unbroken global SU(N)\times SU(N_f-N)\timesU(1) group. This result confirms the presence of "extra" stringy meson states in the adjoint representation of the global group in the bulk theory. The non-Abelian bulk duality is in one-to-one correspondence with a duality taking place in the N=(2,2) supersymmetric weighted CP(N_f-1) model.

Perturbative Aspects of Heterotically Deformed CP(N-1) Sigma Model. I

In this paper we begin the study of renormalizations in the heterotically deformed N=(0,2) CP(N-1) sigma models. In addition to the coupling constant g^2 of the undeformed N=(2,2) model, there is the second coupling constant γdescribing the strength of the heterotic deformation. We calculate both βfunctions, β_g and β_γat one loop, determining the flow of g^2 and γ. Under a certain choice of the initial conditions, the theory is asymptotically free. The βfunction for the ratio ρ=γ^2/g^2 exhibits an infrared fixed point at ρ={1}{2}. Formally this fixed point lies outside the validity of the one-loop approximation. We argue, however, that the fixed point at ρ={1}{2} may survive to all orders. The reason is the enhancement of symmetry - emergence of a chiral fermion flavor symmetry in the heterotically deformed Lagrangian - at ρ={1}{2}. Next we argue that β_ρformally obtained at one loop, is exact to all orders in the large-N (planar) approximation. Thus, the fixed point at ρ= {1}{2} is definitely the feature of the model in the large-N limit.

Crossover between Abelian and non-Abelian confinement in N=2 supersymmetric QCD

In this paper we investigate the nature of the transition from Abelian to non-Abelian confinement (i.e. crossover vs. phase transition). To this end we consider the basic N=2 model where non-Abelian flux tubes (strings) were first found: supersymmetric QCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f=N flavors of fundamental matter (quarks). The Fayet-Iliopoulos term ξtriggers the squark condensation and leads to the formation of non-Abelian strings. There are two adjustable parameters in this model: ξand the quark mass difference Δm. We obtain the phase diagram on the (ξ, Δm) plane. At large ξand small Δm the world-sheet dynamics of the string orientational moduli is described by N=2 two-dimensional CP(N-1) model. We show that as we reduce ξthe theory exhibits a crossover to the Abelian (Seiberg-Witten) regime. Instead of N^2 degrees of freedom of non-Abelian theory now only N degrees of freedom survive in the low-energy spectrum. Dyons with certain quantum numbers condense leading to the formation of the Abelian Z_N strings whose fluxes are fixed inside the Cartan subalgebra of the gauge group. As we increase N this crossover becomes exceedingly sharper becoming a genuine phase transition at N =\infty.

Description of the Heterotic String Solutions in the M Model

We continue the study of heterotic non-Abelian BPS-saturated flux tubes (strings). Previously, such solutions were obtained in U(N) gauge theories: N=2 supersymmetric QCD deformed by superpotential terms μA^2 breaking N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. In these models one cannot consider the limit μ\to\infty which would eliminate adjoint fields: the bulk theory develops a Higgs branch; the emergence of massless particles in the bulk precludes one from taking the limit μ\to\infty. This drawback is absent in the M model (hep-th/0701040) where the matter sector includes additional "meson" fields M introduced in a special way. We generalize our previous results to the M model, derive the heterotic string (the string world-sheet theory is a heterotic N=(2,0) sigma model, with the CP(N-1) target space for bosonic fields and an extra right-handed fermion coupled to the fermion fields of the N=(2,2) CP(N-1) model), and then explicitly obtain all relevant zero modes. This allows us to relate parameters of the microscopic M model to those of the world-sheet theory. The limit μ\to\infty is perfectly smooth. Thus, the full-blown and fully analyzed heterotic string emerges, for the first time, in the N=1 theory with no adjoint fields. The fate of the confined monopoles is discussed.

Heterotic Flux Tubes in N=2 SQCD with N=1 Preserving Deformations

We consider non-Abelian BPS-saturated flux tubes (strings) in N=2 supersymmetric QCD deformed by superpotential terms of a special type breaking N=2 supersymmetry down to N=1. Previously it was believed that worldsheet supersymmetry is "accidentally" enhanced due to the facts that N =(1,1) SUSY is automatically elevated up to N=(2,2) on CP(N-1) and, at the same time, there are no N=(0,2) generalizations of the bosonic CP(N-1) model. Edalati and Tong noted that the target space is in fact CP(N-1) x C rather than CP(N-1). This allowed them to suggest a "heterotic" N=(0,2) sigma model, with the CP(N-1) target space for bosonic fields and an extra right-handed fermion which couples to the fermion fields of the N=(2,2) CP(N-1) model. We derive the heterotic N=(0,2) worldsheet model directly from the bulk theory. The relation between the bulk and worldsheet deformation parameters we obtain does not coincide with that suggested by Edalati and Tong at large values of the deformation parameter. For polynomial deformation superpotentials in the bulk we find nonpolynomial response in the worldsheet model. We find a geometric representation for the heterotic model. Supersymmetry is proven to be spontaneously broken for small deformations (at the quantum level). This confirms Tong's conjecture. A proof valid for large deformations will be presented in the subsequent publication.

Multiflavor QCD* on R_3 x S_1: Studying Transition From Abelian to Non-Abelian Confinement

The center-stabilized multiflavor QCD* theories formulated on R_3 x S_1 exhibit both Abelian and non-Abelian confinement as a function of the S_1 radius, similar to the Seiberg-Witten theory as a function of the mass deformation parameter. For sufficiently small number of flavors and small r(S_1), we show occurence of a mass gap in gauge fluctuations, and linear confinement. This is a regime of confinement without continuous chiral symmetry breaking (χSB). Unlike one-flavor theories where there is no phase transition in r(S_1), the multiflavor theories possess a single phase transition associated with breaking of the continuous chiral symmetry. We conjecture that the scale of the χSB is parametrically tied up with the scale of Abelian to non-Abelian confinement transition.

Non-Abelian Duality and Confinement in N=2 Supersymmetric QCD

In N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the U(N) gauge group and N_f>N we study the crossover transition from the weak coupling regime at large ξto strong coupling at small ξwhere ξis the Fayet--Iliopoulos parameter. We find that at strong coupling a dual non-Abelian weakly coupled N=2 theory exists which describes low-energy physics at small ξ. The dual gauge group is U(N_f-N) and the dual theory has N_f flavors of light dyons, to be compared with N_f quarks in the original U(N) theory. Both, the original and dual theories are Higgsed and share the same global symmetry SU(N) x SU(N_f-N) x U(1), albeit the physical meaning of the SU(N) and SU(N_f-N) factors is different in the large- and small-ξregimes. Both regimes support non-Abelian semilocal strings. In each of these two regimes particles that are in the adjoint representations with respect to one of the factor groups exist in two varieties: elementary fields and composite states bound by strings. These varieties interchange upon transition from one regime to the other. We conjecture that the composite stringy states can be related to Seiberg's M fields. The bulk duality that we observed translates into a two-dimensional duality on the world sheet of the non-Abelian strings. At large ξthe internal dynamics of the semilocal non-Abelian strings is described by the sigma model of N orientational and (N_f-N) size moduli, while at small ξthe roles of orientational and size moduli interchange. The BPS spectra of two dual sigma models (describing confined monopoles/dyons of the bulk theory) coincide. It would be interesting to trace parallels between the non-Abelian duality we found and string theory constructions.

Non-Abelian Strings: From Weak to Strong Coupling and Back via Duality

The crossover transition from weak coupling at large ξto strong coupling at small ξis studied in N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory with the U(N) gauge group and N_f>N (here ξis the Fayet--Iliopoulos parameter). We find that at strong coupling a dual non-Abelian weakly coupled N=2 theory exists which describes low-energy physics at small ξ. The dual gauge group is U(N_f-N). The dual theory has N_f flavors of light dyons, to be compared with N_f quarks in the original U(N) theory. Both theories support non-Abelian strings. In each of these two regimes there are two varieties of physical excitations: elementary fields and nonperturbative composite states bound by confining strings. These varieties interchange upon transition from one regime to the other. We conjecture that the composite stringy states can be related to Seiberg's M fields.

Quantum Fusion of Domain Walls with Fluxes

We study how fluxes on the domain wall world volume modify quantum fusion of two distant parallel domain walls into a composite wall. The elementary wall fluxes can be separated into parallel and antiparallel components. The parallel component affects neither the binding energy nor the process of quantum merger. The antiparallel fluxes, instead, increase the binding energy and, against naive expectations, suppress quantum fusion. In the small flux limit we explicitly find the bounce solution and the fusion rate as a function of the flux. We argue that at large (antiparallel) fluxes there exists a critical value of the flux (versus the difference in the wall tensions), which switches off quantum fusion altogether. This phenomenon of flux-related wall stabilization is rather peculiar: it is unrelated to any conserved quantity. Our consideration of the flux-related all stabilization is based on substantiated arguments that fall short of complete proof.

Quantum Fusion of Strings (Flux Tubes) and Domain Walls

We consider formation of composite strings and domain walls as a result of fusion of two elementary objects (elementary strings in the first case and elementary walls in the second) located at a distance from each other. The tension of the composite object T_2 is assumed to be less than twice the tension of the elementary object T_1, so that bound states are possible. If in the initial state the distance d between the fusing strings or walls is much larger than their thickness and satisfies the conditions T_1 d^2 >> 1 (in the string case) and T_1 d^3 >> 1 (in the wall case), the problem can be fully solved quasiclassically. The fusion probability is determined by the first, "under the barrier" stage of the process. We find the bounce configuration and its extremal action S_B. In the wall problem e^{-S_B} gives the fusion probability per unit time per unit area. In the string case, due to a logarithmic infrared divergence, the problem is well formulated only for finite-length strings. The fusion probability per unit time can be found in the limit in which the string length is much larger than the distance between two merging strings.

Confinement and Localization on Domain Walls

We continue the studies of localization of the U(1) gauge fields on domain walls. Depending on dynamics of the bulk theory the gauge field localized on the domain wall can be either in the Coulomb phase or squeezed into flux tubes implying (Abelian) confinement of probe charges on the wall along the wall surface. First, we consider a simple toy model with one flavor in the bulk at weak coupling (a minimal model) realizing the latter scenario. We then suggest a model presenting an extension of the Seiberg--Witten theory which is at strong coupling, but all theoretical constructions are under full control if we base our analysis on a dual effective action. Finally, we compare our findings with the wall in a "nonminimal" theory with two distinct quark flavors that had been studied previously. In this case the U(1) gauge field trapped on the wall is exactly massless because it is the Goldstone boson of a U(1) symmetry in the bulk spontaneously broken on the wall. The theory on the wall is in the Coulomb phase. We explain why the mechanism of confinement discussed in the first part of the paper does not work in this case, and strings are not formed on the walls.

Composite non-Abelian Flux Tubes in N=2 SQCD

Composite non-Abelian vortices in N=2 supersymmetric U(2) SQCD are investigated. The internal moduli space of an elementary non-Abelian vortex is CP^1. In this paper we find a composite state of two coincident non-Abelian vortices explicitly solving the first order BPS equations. Topology of the internal moduli space T is determined in terms of a discrete quotient CP^2/Z_2. The spectrum of physical strings and confined monopoles is discussed. This gives indirect information about the sigma model with target space T.

Confinement in N=1 SQCD: One Step Beyond Seiberg's Duality

We consider N=1 supersymmetric quantum chromodynamics (SQCD) with the gauge group U(N_c) and N_c+N quark flavors. N_c flavors are massless; the corresponding squark fields develop (small) vacuum expectation values (VEVs) on the Higgs branch. Extra N flavors are endowed with small (and equal) mass terms. We study this theory through its Seiberg's dual: U(N) gauge theory with N_c +N flavors of "dual quark" fields plus a gauge-singlet mesonic field M. The original theory is referred to as "quark theory" while the dual one is termed "monopole theory." The suggested mild deformation of Seiberg's procedure changes the dynamical regime of the monopole theory from infrared free to asymptotically free at large distances. We show that, upon condensation of the "dual quarks," the dual theory supports non-Abelian flux tubes (strings). Seiberg's duality is extended beyond purely massless states to include light states on both sides. Being interpreted in terms of the quark theory, the monopole-theory flux tubes are supposed to carry chromoelectric fields. The string junctions -- confined monopole-theory monopoles -- can be viewed as "constituent quarks" of the original quark theory. We interpret closed strings as glueballs of the original quark theory. Moreover, there are string configurations formed by two junctions connected by a pair of different non-Abelian strings. These can be considered as constituent quark mesons of the quark theory.

Non-Abelian Strings and the Luscher Term

We calculate the Luscher term for recently suggested non-Abelian flux tubes (strings). The main feature of the non-Abelian strings is the presence of orientational zero modes associated with rotation of their color flux inside a non-Abelian subgroup. The Luscher term is determined by the number of light degrees of freedom on the string wordsheet. Unlike the standard π/12 we get Nπ/12 for non-Abelian strings in the U(N) gauge theories. Thus, the Luscher coefficient acquires a dependence on the rank of the gauge group. In the models with non-Abelian strings discussed in the literature there are two distinct scales: the string tension ξ(the string thickness \sim ξ^{-1/2}) and the dynamical scale of strong interactions Λ. At weak coupling ξ\ggΛ^2. The Luscher term for non-Abelian strings experiences a jump: at ξ^{-1/2}\ll L\ll Λ^{-1} it is Nπ/12 while at at L\gg Λ^{-1} the orientational moduli are frozen out and the Luscher coefficient approaches its "Luscher" value π/12. We raise the question of possible extra (i.e. non-translational) light moduli on the worldsheet of QCD strings at large N.

Supersymmetric Q Solitons of Arbitrary Genus

We construct "Flying Saucer" solitons in supersymmetric N=2 gauge theory which is known to support BPS domain walls with a U(1) gauge field localized on its worldvolume. We demonstrate that this model supports exotic particle-like solitons whose topology is largely arbitrary: closed orientable surfaces in three-dimensional space which can have arbitrary genus. In particular, we focus on Q tori. Q tori and similar solitons of higher genera are obtained by folding the domain wall into an appropriate surface. Nontrivial cycles on the domain wall worldvolume (handles) are stabilized by crossed electric and magnetic fields inside the folded domain wall. Three distinct frameworks are used to prove the existence of these Flying Saucer solitons and study their properties: the worldvolume description (including the Dirac-Born-Infeld action), the bulk theory description in the sigma-model limit, and the bulk theory description in the thin-edge approximation. In the sigma-model framework the Q torus is shown to be related to the Hopf Skyrmion studied previously.

Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics: How Confined Non-Abelian Monopoles Emerge from Quark Condensation

We consider N =1 supersymmetric QCD with the gauge group U(N) and N_f=N quark flavors. To get rid of flat directions we add a meson superfield. The theory has no adjoint fields and, therefore, no 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles in the quasiclassical limit. We observe a non-Abelian Meissner effect: condensation of color charges (squarks) gives rise to confined monopoles. The very fact of their existence in N =1 supersymmetric QCD without adjoint scalars was not known previously. Our analysis is analytic and is based on the fact that the N =1 theory under consideration can be obtained starting from N =2 SQCD in which the 't Hooft-Polyakov monopoles do exist, through a certain limiting procedure allowing us to track the status of these monopoles at various stages. Monopoles are confined by BPS non-Abelian strings (flux tubes). Dynamics of string orientational zero modes are described by supersymmetric CP(N-1) sigma model on the string world sheet. If a dual of N =1 SQCD with the gauge group U(N) and N_f=N quark flavors could be identified, in this dual theory our demonstration would be equivalent to the proof of the non-Abelian dual Meissner effect.

Bulk-Brane Duality in Field Theory

We consider (3+1)-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric QED with two flavors of fundamental hypermultiplets. This theory supports 1/2-BPS domain walls and flux tubes (strings), as well as their 1/4-BPS junctions. The effective (2+1)-dimensional theory on the domain wall is known to be a U(1) gauge theory. Previously, the wall-string junctions were shown to play the role of massive charges in this theory. However, the field theory of the junctions on the wall (for semi-infinite strings) appears to be inconsistent due to infrared problems. All these problems can be eliminated by compactifying one spatial dimension orthogonal to the wall and considering a wall-antiwall system on a cylinder. We argue that for certain values of parameters this set-up provides an example of a controllable bulk-brane duality in field theory. Dynamics of the 4D bulk are mapped onto 3D boundary theory: 3D N=2 SQED with two matter superfields and a weak-strong coupling constant relation in 4D and 3D, respectively. The cylinder radius is seen as a "real mass" in 3D N=2 SQED. We work out (at weak coupling) the quantum version of the world-volume theory on the walls. Integrating out massive matter (strings in the bulk theory) one generates a Chern-Simons term on the wall world volume and an interaction between the wall and antiwall that scales as a power of distance. Vector and scalar (classically) massless excitations on the walls develop a mass gap at the quantum level; the long-range interactions disappear. The above duality implies that the wall and its antiwall partner (at strong coupling in the bulk theory) are stabilized at the opposite sides of the cylinder.

Domain Lines as Fractional Strings

We consider N=2 supersymmetric quantum electrodynamics (SQED) with 2 flavors, the Fayet--Iliopoulos parameter, and a mass term $β$ which breaks the extended supersymmetry down to N=1. The bulk theory has two vacua; at $β=0$ the BPS-saturated domain wall interpolating between them has a moduli space parameterized by a U(1) phase $σ$ which can be promoted to a scalar field in the effective low-energy theory on the wall world-volume. At small nonvanishing $β$ this field gets a sine-Gordon potential. As a result, only two discrete degenerate BPS domain walls survive. We find an explicit solitonic solution for domain lines -- string-like objects living on the surface of the domain wall which separate wall I from wall II. The domain line is seen as a BPS kink in the world-volume effective theory. We expect that the wall with the domain line on it saturates both the $\{1,0\}$ and the $\{{1/2},{1/2}\}$b central charges of the bulk theory. The domain line carries the magnetic flux which is exactly 1/2 of the flux carried by the flux tube living in the bulk on each side of the wall. Thus, the domain lines on the wall confine charges living on the wall, resembling Polyakov's three-dimensional confinement.

Non-Abelian Semilocal Strings in N=2 Supersymmetric QCD

We consider a benchmark bulk theory in four-dimensions: N=2 supersymmetric QCD with the gauge group U(N) and N_f flavors of fundamental matter hypermultiplets (quarks). The nature of the BPS strings in this benchmark theory crucially depends on N_f. If N_f\geq N and all quark masses are equal, it supports non-Abelian BPS strings which have internal (orientational) moduli. If N_f>N these strings become semilocal, developing additional moduli ρrelated to (unlimited) variations of their transverse size. Using the U(2) gauge group with N_f=3,4 as an example, we derive an effective low-energy theory on the (two-dimensional) string world sheet. Our derivation is field-theoretic, direct and explicit: we first analyze the Bogomol'nyi equations for string-geometry solitons, suggest an ansatz and solve it at large ρ. Then we use this solution to obtain the world-sheet theory. In the semiclassical limit our result confirms the Hanany-Tong conjecture, which rests on brane-based arguments, that the world-sheet theory is N=2 supersymmetric U(1) gauge theory with N positively and N_e=N_f-N negatively charged matter multiplets and the Fayet-Iliopoulos term determined by the four-dimensional coupling constant. We conclude that the Higgs branch of this model is not lifted by quantum effects. As a result, such strings cannot confine. Our analysis of infrared effects, not seen in the Hanany-Tong consideration, shows that, in fact, the derivative expansion can make sense only provided the theory under consideration is regularized in the infrared, e.g. by the quark mass differences. The world-sheet action discussed in this paper becomes a bona fide low-energy effective action only if Δm_{AB}\neq 0.

Non-Abelian Flux Tubes in SQCD: Supersizing World-Sheet Supersymmetry

We consider non-Abelian 1/2 BPS flux tubes (strings) in a deformed N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory, with mass terms mu_{1,2} of the adjoint fields breaking N=2 down to N=1. The main feature of the non-Abelian strings is the occurrence of orientational moduli associated with the possibility of rotations of their color fluxes inside a global SU(N) group. The bulk four-dimensional theory has four supercharges; half-criticality of the non-Abelian strings would imply then N=1 supersymmetry on the world sheet, i.e. two supercharges. In fact, superalgebra of the reduced moduli space has four supercharges. Internal dynamics of the orientational moduli are described by two-dimensional CP(N-1) model on the string world sheet. We focus mainly on the SU(2) case, i.e. CP(1) world-sheet theory. We show that non-Abelian BPS strings exist for all values of mu_{1,2}. The low-energy theory of moduli is indeed CP(1), with four supercharges, in a wide region of breaking parameters mu_{1,2}. Only in the limit of very large mu_{1,2}, above some critical value, the N=2 world-sheet supersymmetry breaks down to N=1. We observe "supersymmetry emergence" for the flux-tube junction (confined monopole): the "kink-monopole" is half-critical considered from the standpoint of the world-sheet CP(1) model (i.e. two supercharges conserved), while in the bulk N=1 theory there is no monopole central charge at all.

Non-Abelian Meissner Effect in Yang--Mills Theories at Weak Coupling

We present a weak-coupling Yang--Mills model supporting non-Abelian magnetic flux tubes and non-Abelian confined magnetic monopoles. In the dual description the magnetic flux tubes are prototypes of the QCD strings. Dualizing the confined magnetic monopoles we get gluelumps which convert a "QCD string" in the excited state to that in the ground state. Introducing a mass parameter m we discover a phase transition between the Abelian and non-Abelian confinement at a critical value m=m_* of order of Lambda. Underlying dynamics are governed by a Z_N symmetry inherent to the model under consideration. At m>m_* the Z_N symmetry is spontaneously broken, resulting in N degenerate Z_N (Abelian) strings. At m<m_* the Z_N symmetry is restored, the degeneracy is lifted, and the strings become non-Abelian. We calculate tensions of the non-Abelian strings, as well as the decay rates of the metastable strings, at N >> 1.

Spontaneous Z2 Symmetry Breaking in the Orbifold Daughter of N=1 Super Yang-Mills Theory, Fractional Domain Walls and Vacuum Structure

We discuss the fate of the Z2 symmetry and the vacuum structure in an SU(N)xSU(N) gauge theory with one bifundamental Dirac fermion. This theory can be obtained from SU(2N) supersymmetric Yang--Mills (SYM) theory by virtue of Z2 orbifolding. We analyze dynamics of domain walls and argue that the Z2 symmetry is spontaneously broken. Since unbroken Z2 is a necessary condition for nonperturbative planar equivalence we conclude that the orbifold daughter is nonperturbatively nonequivalent to its supersymmetric parent. En route, our investigation reveals the existence of fractional domain walls, similar to fractional D-branes of string theory on orbifolds. We conjecture on the fate of these domain walls in the true solution of the Z2-broken orbifold theory. We also comment on relation with nonsupersymmetric string theories and closed-string tachyon condensation.

An Exact Relation for N=1 Orientifold Field Theories with Arbitrary Superpotential

We discuss a nonperturbative relation for orientifold parent/daughter pairs of supersymmetric theories with an arbitrary tree-level superpotential. We show that super-Yang-Mills (SYM) theory with matter in the adjoint representation at N-->infinity, is equivalent to a SYM theory with matter in the antisymmetric representation and a related superpotential. The gauge symmetry breaking patterns match in these theories too. The moduli spaces in the limiting case of a vanishing superpotential are also discussed. Finally we argue that there is an exact mapping between the effective superpotentials of two finite-N theories belonging to an orientifold pair.

From Super-Yang-Mills Theory to QCD: Planar Equivalence and its Implications

We review and extend our recent work on the planar (large N) equivalence between gauge theories with varying degree of supersymmetry. The main emphasis is made on the planar equivalence between N=1 gluodynamics (super-Yang-Mills theory) and a non-supersymmetric "orientifold field theory." We outline an "orientifold" large N expansion, analyze its possible phenomenological consequences in one-flavor massless QCD, and make a first attempt at extending the correspondence to three massless flavors. An analytic calculation of the quark condensate in one-flavor QCD starting from the gluino condensate in N=1 gluodynamics is thoroughly discussed. We also comment on a planar equivalence involving N=2 supersymmetry, on "chiral rings" in non-supersymmetric theories, and on the origin of planar equivalence from an underlying, non-tachyonic type-0 string theory. Finally, possible further directions of investigation, such as the gauge/gravity correspondence in large-N orientifold field theory, are briefly discussed.

Localization of Non-Abelian Gauge Fields on Domain Walls at Weak Coupling (D-brane Prototypes)

Building on our previous results, we study D-brane/string prototypes in weakly coupled (3+1)-dimensional supersymmetric field theory engineered to support (2+1)-dimensional domain walls, "non-Abelian" strings and various junctions. Our main but not exclusive task is the study of localization of non-Abelian gauge fields on the walls. The model we work with is N=2 QCD, with the gauge group SU(2)x$U(1) and N_f=4 flavors of fundamental hypermultiplets (referred to as quarks), perturbed by the Fayet-Iliopoulos term of the U(1) factor. In the limit of large but almost equal quark mass terms a set of vacua exists in which this theory is at weak coupling. We focus on these vacua (called the quark vacua). We study elementary BPS domain walls interpolating between selected quark vacua, as well as their bound state, a composite wall. The composite wall is demonstrated to localize a non-Abelian gauge field on its world sheet. Next, we turn to the analysis of recently proposed "non-Abelian" strings (flux tubes) which carry orientational moduli corresponding to rotations of the "color-magnetic" flux direction inside a global O(3). We find a 1/4-BPS solution for the string ending on the composite domain wall. The end point of this string is shown to play the role of a non-Abelian (dual) charge in the effective world volume theory of non-Abelian (2+1)-dimensional vector fields confined to the wall.

Non-Abelian String Junctions as Confined Monopoles

Various dynamical regimes associated with confined monopoles in the Higgs phase of N=2 two-flavor QCD are studied. The microscopic model we deal with has the SU(2)xU(1) gauge group, with a Fayet-Iliopoulos term of the U(1) factor, and large and (nearly) degenerate mass terms of the matter hypermultiplets. We present a complete quasiclassical treatment of the BPS sector of this model, including the full set of the first-order equations, derivations of all relevant zero modes, and derivation of an effective low-energy theory for the corresponding collective coordinates. The macroscopic description is provided by a CP(1) model with or without twisted mass. The confined monopoles -- string junctions of the microscopic theory -- are mapped onto BPS kinks of the CP(1) model. The string junction is 1/4 BPS. Masses and other characteristics of the confined monopoles are matched with those of the CP(1)-model kinks. The matching demonstrates the occurrence of an anomaly in the monopole central charge in 4D Yang-Mills theory. We study what becomes of the confined monopole in the bona fide non-Abelian limit of degenerate mass terms where a global SU(2) symmetry is restored. The solution of the macroscopic model is known e.g. from the mirror description of the CP(1) model. The monopoles, aka CP(1)-model kinks, are stabilized by nonperturbative dynamics of the CP(1) model. We explain an earlier rather puzzling observation of a correspondence between the BPS kink spectrum in the CP(1) model and the Seiberg-Witten solution.

Domain Walls and Flux Tubes in N=2 SQCD: D-Brane Prototypes

This paper could have been entitled "D branes and strings from flesh and blood." We study field theoretic prototypes of D branes/strings. To this end we consider (2+1)-dimensional domain walls in (3+1)-dimensional N=2 SQCD with SU(2) gauge group and two quark flavors in the fundamental representation. This theory is perturbed by a small mass term of the adjoint matter which, in the leading order in the mass parameter, does not break N=2 supersymmetry, and reduces to a (generalized) Fayet-Iliopoulos term in the effective low-energy N=2 SQED. We find 1/2 BPS-saturated domain wall solution interpolating between two quark vacua at weak coupling, and show that this domain wall localizes a U(1) gauge field. To make contact with the brane/string picture we consider the Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen magnetic flux tube in one of two quark vacua and demonstrate that it can end on the domain wall. We find an explicit 1/4 BPS-saturated solution for the wall/flux tube junction. We verify that the end point of the flux tube on the wall plays the role of an electric charge in the dual (2+1)-dimensional SQED living on the wall. Flow to N=1 theory is discussed. Our results lead us to a conjecture regarding the notorious "missing wall" in the solution of Kaplunovsky et al.

N=2 Sigma Model with Twisted Mass and Superpotential: Central Charges and Solitons

We consider supersymmetric sigma models on the Kahler target spaces, with twisted mass. The Kahler spaces are assumed to have holomorphic Killing vectors. Introduction of a superpotential of a special type is known to be consistent with N=2 superalgebra (Alvarez-Gaume and Freedman). We show that the algebra acquires central charges in the anticommutators {Q_L, Q_L} and {Q_R, Q_R}. These central charges have no parallels, and they can exist only in two dimensions. The central extension of the N=2 superalgebra we found paves the way to a novel phenomenon -- spontaneous breaking of a part of supersymmetry. In the general case 1/2 of supersymmetry is spontaneously broken (the vacuum energy density is positive), while the remaining 1/2 is realized linearly. In the model at hand the standard fermion number is not defined, so that the Witten index as well as the Cecotti-Fendley-Intriligator-Vafa index are useless. We show how to construct an index for counting short multiplets in internal algebraic terms which is well-defined in spite of the absence of the standard fermion number. Finally, we outline derivation of the quantum anomaly in {\bar Q_L, Q_R}.

On k-String Tensions and Domain Walls in N=1 Gluodynamics

We discuss the k dependence of the k-string tension sigma_k in SU(N) supersymmetric gluodynamics. As well known, at large N the k-string consists, to leading order, of k noninteracting fundamental strings, so that sigma_k=k sigma_1. We argue, both from field-theory and string-theory side, that subleading corrections to this formula run in powers of 1/N^2 rather than 1/N, thus excluding the Casimir scaling. We suggest a heuristic model allowing one to relate the k-string tension in four-dimensional gluodynamics with the tension of the BPS domain walls (k-walls). In this model the domain walls are made of a net of strings connected to each other by baryon vertices. The relation emerging in this way leads to the sine formula sigma_ k ~ Lambda^2 N sin pi k/N. We discuss possible corrections to the sine law, and present arguments that they are suppressed by 1/k factors. We explain why the sine law does not hold in two dimensions. Finally, we discuss the applicability of the sine formula for non-supersymmetric orientifold field theories.

QCD Quark Condensate from SUSY and the Orientifold Large-N Expansion

We estimate the quark condensate in one-flavor massless QCD from the known value of the gluino condensate in SUSY Yang-Mills theory using our newly proposed "orientifold" large-N expansion. The numerical result for the quark condensate renormalized at the scale 2 GeV is then given as a function of alpha_s(2 GeV) and of possible corrections from sub-leading terms. Our value can be compared with the quark condensate in (quenched) lattice QCD or with the one extracted from the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relation by virtue of non-lattice determinations of the quark masses. In both cases we find quite a remarkable agreement.

Remarks on Stable and Quasi-stable k-Strings at Large N

We discuss k-strings in the large-N Yang-Mills theory and its supersymmetric extension. Whereas the tension of the bona fide (stable) QCD string is expected to depend only on the N-ality of the representation, tensions that depend on specific representation R are often reported in the lattice literature. In particular, adjoint strings are discussed and found in certain simulations. We clarify this issue by systematically exploiting the notion of the quasi-stable strings which becomes well-defined at large N. The quasi-stable strings with representation-dependent tensions decay, but the decay rate (per unit length per unit time) is suppressed as Lambda^2 F(N) where F(N) falls off as a function of N. It can be determined on the case-by-case basis. The quasi-stable strings eventually decay into stable strings whose tension indeed depends only on the N-ality. We also briefly review large-N arguments showing why the Casimir formula for the string tension cannot be correct, and present additional arguments in favor of the sine formula. Finally, we comment on the relevance of our estimates to Euclidean lattice measurements.

SUSY Relics in One-Flavor QCD from a New 1/N Expansion

We suggest a new large-N_c limit for multi flavor QCD. Since fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations are equivalent in SU(3), we have the option to define SU(N_c) QCD keeping quarks in the latter. We can then define a new 1/N_c expansion (at fixed number of flavors N_f) that shares appealing properties with the topological (fixed N_f/N_c) expansion while being more suitable for theoretical analysis. In particular, for N_f=1, our large-N_c limit gives a theory that we recently proved to be equivalent, in the bosonic sector, to N=1 supersymmetric gluodynamics. Using known properties of the latter, we derive several qualitative and semi-quantitative predictions for N_f=1 massless QCD which can be easily tested in lattice simulations. Finally, we comment on possible applications for pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory and real QCD.

The Cosmological Constant and Domain Walls in Orientifold Field Theories and N=1 Gluodynamics

We discuss domain walls and vacuum energy density (cosmological constant) in N=1 gluodynamics and in non-supersymmetric large N orientifold field theories which have been recently shown to be planar equivalent (in the boson sector) to N=1 gluodynamics. A relation between the vanishing force between two parallel walls and vanishing cosmological constant is pointed out. This relation may explain why the cosmological constant vanishes in the orientifold field theory at leading order although the hadronic spectrum of this theory does not contain fermions in the limit N-->infinity. The cancellation is among even and odd parity bosonic contributions, due to NS-NS and R-R cancellations in the annulus amplitude of the underlying string theory. We use the open-closed string channel duality to describe interaction between the domain walls which is interpreted as the exchange of composite ``dilatons'' and ``axions'' coupled to the walls. Finally, we study some planar equivalent pairs in which both theories in the parent-daughter pair are non-supersymmetric.

Quantum Tunneling

This article is a slightly expanded version of the talk I delivered at the Special Plenary Session of the 46-th Annual Meeting of the Israel Physical Society (Technion, Haifa, May 11, 2000) dedicated to Misha Marinov. In the first part I briefly discuss quantum tunneling, a topic which Misha cherished and to which he was repeatedly returning through his career. My task was to show that Misha's work had been deeply woven in the fabric of today's theory. The second part is an attempt to highlight one of many facets of Misha's human portrait. In the 1980's, being a refusenik in Moscow, he volunteered to teach physics under unusual circumstances. I present recollections of people who were involved in this activity.

Reduced N=2 Quantum Mechanics: Descendants of the Kahler Geometries

We discuss an N=2 quantum mechanics with or without a central charge. A representation is constructed with the number of bosonic degrees of freedom less that one half of the fermionic degrees of freedom. We suggest a systematic method of reducing the bosonic degrees of freedom called ``dynamical reduction." Our consideration opens a problem of a general classification of nonstandard representations of N=2$ superalgebra.

Quark-Hadron Duality

I review the notion of the quark-hadron duality from the modern perspective. Both, the theoretical foundation and practical applications are discussed. The proper theoretical framework in which the problem can be formulated and treated is Wilson's operator product expansion (OPE). Two models developed for the description of duality violations are considered in some detail: one is instanton-based, another resonance-based. The mechanisms they represent are complementary. Although both models are rather primitive (their largest virtue is their simplicity) they hopefully capture important features of the phenomenon. Being open for improvements, they can be used "as is" for orientation in the studies of duality violations in the processes of practical interest.

BPS Saturated Solitons in N=2 Two-Dimensional Theories on RxS (Domain Walls in Theories with Compactified Dimensions)

We discuss topologically stable solitons in two-dimensional theories with the extended supersymmetry assuming that the spatial coordinate is compact. This problem arises in the consideration of the domain walls in the popular theories with compactified extra dimensions. Contrary to naive expectations, it is shown that the solitons on the cylinder can be BPS saturated. In the case of one chiral superfield, a complete theory of the BPS saturated solitons is worked out. We describe the classical solutions of the BPS equations. Depending on the choice of the Kahler metric, the number of such solutions can be arbitrarily large. Although the property of the BPS saturation is preserved order by order in perturbation theory, nonperturbative effects eliminate the majority of the classical BPS states upon passing to the quantum level. The number of the quantum BPS states is found. It is shown that the N=2 field theory includes an auxiliary N=1 quantum mechanics, Witten's index of which counts the number of the BPS particles.

Exact Results in Gauge Theories: Putting Supersymmetry to Work. The 1999 Sakurai Prize Lecture

Powerful methods based on supersymmetry allow one to find exact solutions to certain problems in strong coupling gauge theories. The inception of some of these methods (holomorphy in the gauge coupling and other chiral parameters, in conjunction with instanton calculations) dates back to the 1980's. I describe the early exact results -- the calculation of the beta function and the gluino condensate -- and their impact on the subsequent developments. A brief discussion of the recent breakthrough discoveries where these results play a role is given.

Tilting the Brane, or Some Cosmological Consequences of the Brane Universe

We discuss theories in which the standard-model particles are localized on a brane embedded in space-time with large compact extra dimensions, whereas gravity propagates in the bulk. In addition to the ground state corresponding to a straight infinite brane, such theories admit a (one parameter) family of stable configurations corresponding to branes wrapping with certain periodicity around the extra dimension(s) when one moves along a noncompact coordinate (tilted walls). In the effective four-dimensional field-theory picture, such walls are interpreted as one of the (stable) solutions with the constant gradient energy, discussed earlier. In the cosmological context their energy "redshifts" by the Hubble expansion and dissipates slower then the one in matter or radiation. The tilted wall eventually starts to dominate the Universe. The upper bound on the energy density coincides with the present critical energy density. Thus, this mechanism can become significant any time in the future. The solutions we discuss are characterized by a tiny spontaneous breaking of both the Lorentz and rotational invariances. Small calculable Lorentz noninvariant terms in the standard-model Lagrangian are induced. Thus, the tilted walls provide a framework for the spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz invariance.

BPS-Saturated Walls in Supersymmetric Theories

Domain-wall solutions in four-dimensional supersymmetric field theories with distinct discrete vacuum states lead to the spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry, either completely or partially. We consider in detail the case when the domain walls are the BPS-saturated states, and 1/2 of supersymmetry is preserved. Several useful criteria that relate the preservation of 1/2 of supersymmetry on the domain walls to the central extension appearing in the N=1 superalgebras are established. We explain how the central extension can appear in N=1 supersymmetry and explicitly obtain the central charge in various models: the generalized Wess-Zumino models, and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with or without matter. The BPS-saturated domain walls satisfy the first-order differential equations which we call the creek equations, since they formally coincide with the (complexified) equations of motion of an analog high-viscosity fluid on a profile which is given by the superpotential of the original problem. Some possible applications are considered.

Heavy flavor decays, OPE and duality in two-Dimensional 't Hooft model

The 't Hooft model (two-dimensional QCD in the limit of large number of colors) is used as a laboratory for exploring various aspects of the heavy quark expansions in the nonleptonic and semileptonic decays of heavy flavors. We perform a complete operator analysis and construct the operator product expansion (OPE) up to terms O(1/m_Q^4), inclusively. The OPE-based predictions for the inclusive widths are then confronted with the "phenomenological" results, obtained by summation of all open exclusive decay channels, one by one. The summation is carried out analytically, by virtue of the 't Hooft equation. The two alternative expressions for the total widths match. We comment on the recent claim in the literature of a 1/m_Q correction to the total width which would be in clear conflict with the OPE result. The issue of duality violations both in the simplified setting of the 't Hooft model and in actual QCD is discussed. The amplitude of oscillating terms is estimated.

An Illustrative Example of How Quark-Hadron Duality Might Work

We discuss the issue of the local quark-hadron duality at high energies in two- and four-dimensional QCD. A mechanism of the dynamical realization of the quark-hadron duality in two- dimensional QCD in the limit of large number of colors, N_c -> \infty, (the 't Hooft model) is considered. A similar mechanism of dynamical smearing may be relevant in four-dimensional QCD. Although particular details of our results are model-dependent, the general features of the duality implementation conjectured previously get further support.

Degeneracy and Continuous Deformations of Supersymmetric Domain Walls

In a wide class of supersymmetric theories degenerate families of the BPS-saturated domain walls exist. The internal structure of these walls can continuously vary, without changing the wall tension. This is described by hidden parameters (collective coordinates). Differentiating with respect to the collective coordinates one gets a set of the bosonic zero modes localized on the wall. Neither of them is related to the spontaneous breaking of any symmetry. Through the residual 1/2 of supersymmetry each bosonic zero mode generates a fermionic partner.

High Power n of m_b in Beauty Widths and n=5 -> oo Limit

The leading term in the semileptonic width of heavy flavor hadrons depends on the fifth power of the heavy quark mass. We present an analysis where this power can be self-consistently treated as a free parameter n and the width can be studied in the limit n -> oo. The resulting expansion elucidates why the small velocity (SV) treatment is relevant for the inclusive semileptonic b->c transition. The extended SV limit (ESV limit) is introduced. The leading terms in the perturbative alpha_s expansion enhanced by powers of n are automatically resummed by using the low-scale Euclidean mass. The large-n treatment explains why the scales of order m_b/n are appropriate. On the other hand, the scale cannot be too small since the factorially divergent perturbative corrections associated with running of alpha_s show up. Both requirements are met if we use the short-distance mass normalized at a scale around m_b/n \sim 1 GeV. A convenient definition of such low-scale OPE-compatible masses is briefly discussed.

Non-Perturbative Dynamics in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

I give an introductory review of recent, fascinating developments in supersymmetric gauge theories. I explain pedagogically the miraculous properties of supersymmetric gauge dynamics allowing one to obtain exact solutions in many instances. Various dynamical regimes emerging in supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics and its generalizations are discussed. I emphasize those features that have a chance of survival in QCD and those which are drastically different in supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric gauge theories. Unlike most of the recent reviews focusing almost entirely on the progress in extended supersymmetries (the Seiberg-Witten solution of N=2 models), these lectures are mainly devoted to N=1 theories. The primary task is extracting lessons for non-supersymmetric theories.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking, Duality in the \bar{Q}q Channel and b -> c anti-c s Decays

We address the issue of the quark-hadron duality in the spectral densities induced by the heavy-light quark currents anti-Q q. In the limit m_Q ->oo, m_q ->0 we observe an enhancement of the physical spectral density compared to the quark one in the scalar and axial channels, due to the Goldstone meson contributions. This may imply that the scale where duality sets in is higher in these channels than in the vector (pseudoscalar) case. Implications for the nonleptonic decays of B mesons (the b -> c anti-c s transition) are considered. We discuss in detail the decay pattern and obtain an independent estimate of the "wrong" sign D yield.

A Closer Look at Perturbative Corrections in the b->c Semileptonic Transitions

We comment on two recent calculations of the second order perturbative corrections in the heavy flavor semileptonic transitions within the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie approach. It is pointed out that the results do not show significant enhancement either in the inclusive $b\rightarrow c$ decays or in the exclusive amplitudes at zero recoil provided that the expansion parameter is chosen in a way appropriate to the kinematics at hand. The values of the second-order coefficients inferred from the BLM-type calculations appear to be of order unity in the both cases. Thus, in both cases no significant uncertainty in extracting $V_{cb}$ can be attributed to perturbative effects. The theoretical accuracy is mostly determined by the existing uncertainty in $1/m_c^2$ nonperturbative corrections in the exclusive $B\rightarrow D^*$ amplitude, and, to a lesser extent, by the uncertainty in the estimated value of the kinetic energy matrix element $μ_π^2$ in the case of $Γ_{\rm sl}(b\rightarrow c)$. The theoretical accuracy of the inclusive method of determination of $V_{cb}$ seemingly competes with and even exceeds the experimental accuracy.

b -> s +γ: A QCD Consistent Analysis of the Photon Energy Distribution

The photon energy distribution in the inclusive b -> s+γtransitions is a combination of two components: the first component, soft physics, is determined by the so called primordial distribution function, while the second component, perturbative physics, is governed by the hard gluon emission. A simple ansatz is suggested for the primordial distribution function which obeys the QCD constraints known so far. We then discuss in detail how the hard gluon emission affects the energy distribution. An extension of the Sudakov approximation is worked out incorporating the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie prescription and its generalizations. We explicitly calculate the marriage of nonperturbative with perturbative effects in the way required by OPE, introducing separation scale μ. A few parameters, such as m_b and μ_π^2 affect the shape of the distribution and, thus, can be determined by matching to the experimental data. The data, still scarce, while not giving precise values for these parameters, yield consistency with theory: the current values of the above parameters lie within experimental uncertainty. On the theoretical side we outline a method allowing one to go beyond the practical version of OPE.

$|V_{cb}|$ from OPE Sum Rules for Heavy Flavor Transitions

We derive a model-independent upper bound for the axial-vector form factor of the $B\ra D^*$ transition at zero recoil, $F_{B\ra D^*}$. The form factor turns out to be noticeably less than unity. The deviation of $F_{B\ra D^*}$ from unity is larger than previously anticipated. Using our estimate we extract $|V_{cb}|$ from the measured exclusive rate of $B\ra D^* lν$ extrapolated to the point of zero recoil. The central `` exclusive" value of $|V_{cb}|$ is in agreement with the value obtained from the inclusive semileptonic width $Γ(B\ra X_c lν)$. We argue that the theoretical uncertainty in determining $|V_{cb}|$ from the total inclusive width is significantly reduced if a constraint on the quark mass difference $m_b - m_c$ stemming from the heavy quark expansion is taken into account.

Sum Rules for Heavy Flavor Transitions in the SV Limit

We show how sum rules for the weak decays of heavy flavor hadrons can be derived as the moments of spectral distributions in the small velocity (SV) limit. This systematic approach allows us to determine corrections to these sum rules, to obtain new sum rules and it provides us with a transparent physical interpretation; it also opens a new perspective on the notion of the heavy quark mass. Applying these sum rules we derive a lower bound on the deviation of the exclusive form factor $F_{B->D^*}$ from unity at zero recoil; likewise we give a field-theoretical derivation of a previously formulated inequality between the expectation value for the kinetic energy operator of the heavy quark and for the chromomagnetic operator. We analyze how the known results on nonperturbative corrections must be understood when one takes into account the normalization point dependence of the low scale parameters. Relation between the field-theoretic derivation of the sum rules and the quantum-mechanical approach is elucidated.

QCD Predictions for Lepton Spectra in Inclusive Heavy Flavour Decays

We derive the lepton spectrum in semileptonic beauty decays from a nonperturbative treatment of QCD; it is based on an expansion in $1/m_Q$ with $m_Q$ being the heavy flavour quark mass. The leading corrections arising on the $1/m_Q$ level are completely expressed in terms of the difference in the mass of the heavy hadron and the quark. Nontrivial effects appear in $1/m_Q^2$ terms affecting mainly the endpoint region; they are different for meson and baryon decays as well as for beauty and charm decays.

Nonfactorizable Amplitudes in Weak Nonleptonic Decays of Heavy Mesons

We discuss nonfactorizable $1/N_c$ contributions in the amplitudes of non-leptonic exclusive decays of the type $B\rightarrow Dπ$ ($N_c$ is the number of colors). In a certain kinematical limit rather reliable estimates are possible. It is demonstrated that the nonfactorizable parts are of the same order as the factorizable $1/N_c$ parts of the ampiltudes, and have the opposite sign. Thus, an approximate rule of discarding $1/N_c$ corrections in the nonleptonic exclusive decays emerges dynamically. It is shown that this rule is not exact and the degree of compensation is different in different channels. Our predictions make use of the fact that a key matrix element that measures deviations from factorization can be determined using the heavy quark effective theory.

Nonleptonic decays of K mesons revisited

We estimate nonfactorizable 1/$N_c$ contributions in the $K\rightarrow 2π$ amplitudes using the approach proposed in our previous work. It is demonstrated that for the conventional (nonpenguin) operators these contributions are close in magnitude to factorizable $1/N_c$ parts and have the opposite sign. Thus, an approximate rule of discarding $1/N_c$ corrections in $K\rightarrow 2π$ decays is theoretically confirmed. As a result we find an extra suppression of the matrix element of $O_4$ ($ΔI=3/2$) and an extra enhancement of the matrix element of $O_1$ ($ΔI=1/2$). The parameter $B$ describing $K^0-\bar K^0$ mixing is also discussed.
