Les Houches 2015: Physics at TeV colliders - new physics working group report

We present the activities of the 'New Physics' working group for the 'Physics at TeV Colliders' workshop (Les Houches, France, 1-19 June, 2015). Our report includes new physics studies connected with the Higgs boson and its properties, direct search strategies, reinterpretation of the LHC results in the building of viable models and new computational tool developments. Important signatures for searches for natural new physics at the LHC and new assessments of the interplay between direct dark matter searches and the LHC are also considered.

A Note on Unparticle Decays

The coupling of an unparticle operator O_U to Standard Model particles opens up the possibility of unparticle decays into standard model fields. We study this issue by analyzing the pole structure (and spectral function) of the unparticle propagator, corrected to account for one-loop polarization effects from virtual SM particles. We find that the propagator of a scalar unparticle (of scaling dimension 1 < d_U < 2) with a mass gap m_g develops an isolated pole, m_p^2-i m_p Gamma_p, with m_p^2 < m_g^2 below the unparticle continuum that extends above m_g (showing that the theory would be unstable without a mass gap). If that pole lies below the threshold for decay into two standard model particles the pole corresponds to a stable unparticle state (and its width Gamma_p is zero). For m_p^2 above threshold the width is non zero and related to the unparticle decay rate into Standard Model particles. This picture is valid for any value of d_U in the considered range.

Supersymmetry and Finite Radiative Electroweak Breaking from an Extra Dimension

A five dimensional N=1 supersymmetric theory compactified on the orbifold $S^1/\mathbb{Z}_2$ is constructed. Gauge fields and $SU(2)_L$ singlets propagate in the bulk ($U$-states) while $SU(2)_L$ doublets are localized at an orbifold fixed point brane ($T$-states). Zero bulk modes and localized states constitute the MSSM and massive modes are arranged into N=2 supermultiplets. Superpotential interactions on the brane are of the type $UTT$. Supersymmetry is broken in the bulk by a Scherk-Schwarz mechanism using the $U(1)_R$ global $R$-symmetry. A radiative finite electroweak breaking is triggered by the top-quark/squark multiplet $\mathbb{T}$ propagating in the bulk. The compactification radius $R$ is fixed by the minimization conditions and constrained to be $1/R \simlt 10-15$ TeV. It is also constrained by precision electroweak measurements to be $1/R \simgt 4$ TeV. The pattern of supersymmetric mass spectrum is well defined. In particular, the lightest supersymmetric particle is the sneutrino and the next to lightest supersymmetric particle the charged slepton, with a squared-mass difference $\sim M_Z^2$. The theory couplings, gauge and Yukawa, remain perturbative up to scales $E$ given, at one-loop, by $ER \simlt 30-40$. Finally, LEP searches on the MSSM Higgs sector imply an absolute lower bound on the SM-like Higgs mass, around 145 GeV in the one-loop approximation.

The Lightest Higgs Boson Mass in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We compute the upper bound on the mass of the lightest Higgs boson in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in a model-independent way, including leading (one-loop) and next-to-leading order (two-loop) radiative corrections. We find that (contrary to some recent claims) the two-loop corrections are negative with respect to the one-loop result and relatively small ($\simlt 3$\%). After defining physical (pole) top quark mass $M_t$, by including QCD self-energies, and physical Higgs mass $M_H$, by including the electroweak self-energies $Π\left(M_H^2\right)-Π(0)$, we obtain the upper limit on $M_H$ as a function of supersymmetric parameters. We include as supersymmetric parameters the scale of supersymmetry breaking $M_S$, the value of $\tan β$ and the mixing between stops $X_t= A_t + μ\cotβ$ (which is responsible for the threshold correction on the Higgs quartic coupling). Our results do not depend on further details of the supersymmetric model. In particular, for $M_S\leq 1$ TeV, maximal threshold effect $X_t^2=6M_S^2$ and any value of $\tanβ$, we find $M_H\leq 140$ GeV for $M_t\leq 190$ GeV. In the particular scenario where the top is in its infrared fixed point we find $M_H\leq 86$ GeV for $M_t = 170$ GeV.

On the Spontaneous CP Breaking in the Higgs Sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We revise a recently proposed mechanism for spontaneous CP breaking at finite temperature in the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, based on the contribution of squarks, charginos and neutralinos to the one-loop effective potential. We have included plasma effects for all bosons and added the contribution of neutral scalar and charged Higgses. While the former have little effect, the latter provides very strong extra constraints on the parameter space and change drastically the previous results. We find that CP can be spontaneously broken at the critical temperature of the electroweak phase transition without any fine-tuning in the parameter space.
