139La NMR evidence for phase solitons in the ground state of overdoped manganites

Hole doped transition metal oxides are famous due to their extraordinary charge transport properties, such as high temperature superconductivity (cuprates) and colossal magnetoresistance (manganites). Astonishing, the mother system of these compounds is a Mott insulator, whereas important role in the establishment of the metallic or superconducting state is played by the way that holes are self-organized with doping. Experiments have shown that by adding holes the insulating phase breaks into antiferromagnetic (AFM) regions, which are separated by hole rich clumps (stripes) with a rapid change of the phase of the background spins and orbitals. However, recent experiments in overdoped manganites of the La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) (LCMO) family have shown that instead of charge stripes, charge in these systems is organized in a uniform charge density wave (CDW). Besides, recent theoretical works predicted that the ground state is inhomogeneously modulated by orbital and charge solitons, i.e. narrow regions carrying charge (+/-)e/2, where the orbital arrangement varies very rapidly. So far, this has been only a theoretical prediction. Here, by using 139La Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) we provide direct evidence that the ground state of overdoped LCMO is indeed solitonic. By lowering temperature the narrow NMR spectra observed in the AFM phase are shown to wipe out, while for T<30K a very broad spectrum reappears, characteristic of an incommensurate (IC) charge and spin modulation. Remarkably, by further decreasing temperature, a relatively narrow feature emerges from the broad IC NMR signal, manifesting the formation of a solitonic modulation as T->0.

Spin order and lattice frustration in optimally doped manganites. A high temperature NMR study.

The physics underlying the complex glassy phenomena, which accompany the formation of polarons in optimally doped manganites (ODM) is a cumbersome issue with many unexplained aspects. In this article we present 139^{139}La and 55^{55}Mn NMR in the temperature range 80K - 900K of ODM La0.67_{0.67}Ca0.33_{0.33}MnO3_3. We show that local lattice distortions, established in the Paramagnetic (PM) phase for T<700T<700K, induce a genuine spin-glass state, which for T<TcT<T_c consolidates with the Ferromagnetic (FM) state into a single thermodynamic phase. Comparative NMR experiments on La0.77_{0.77}Ca0.23_{0.23}MnO3_3, La0.59_{0.59}Ca0.41_{0.41}MnO3_3, and La0.70_{0.70}Sr0.30_{0.30}MnO3_3 demonstrate the dominant role of lattice distortions, which appear to control (i) the stability of the spin glass phase component and (ii) the kind (1st or 2nd order) of the PM-FM phase transition. The experimental results are in agreement with the predictions of the compressible random bond - random field Ising model, where consideration of a strain field induced by lattice distortions, is shown to invoke at TcT_c a discontinuous (1st order like) change of both the FM and the "glassy" Edwards-Anderson (EA) order parameters.

11^{11}B NMR study of pure and lightly carbon doped MgB2_2 superconductors

We report a 11^{11}B NMR line shape and spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/(T1T)1/(T_1T)) study of pure and lightly carbon doped MgB2−x_{2-x}Cx_{x} for x=0x=0, 0.02, and 0.04, in the vortex state and in magnetic field of 23.5 kOe. We show that while pure MgB2_2 exhibits the magnetic field distribution from superposition of the normal and the Abrikosov state, slight replacement of boron with carbon unveils the magnetic field distribution of the pure Abrikosov state. This indicates a considerable increase of Hc2cH_{c2}^c with carbon doping with respect to pure MgB2_2. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/(T1T)1/(T_1T) demonstrates clearly the presence of a coherence peak right below TcT_c in pure MgB2_2, followed by a typical BCS decrease on cooling. However, at temperatures lower than ≈10\approx 10K strong deviation from the BCS behavior is observed, probably from residual contribution of the vortex dynamics. In the carbon doped systems both the coherence peak and the BCS temperature dependence of 1/(T1T)1/(T_1T) weaken, an effect attributed to the gradual shrinking of the σσ hole cylinders of the Fermi surface with electron doping.

11^{11}B and 27^{27}Al NMR spin-lattice relaxation and Knight shift study of Mg1−x_{1-x}Alx_xB2_2. Evidence for anisotropic Fermi surface

We report a detailed study of 11^{11}B and 27^{27}Al NMR spin-lattice relaxation rates (1/T11/T_1), as well as of 27^{27}Al Knight shift (K) of Mg1−x_{1-x}Alx_xB2_2, 0≤x≤10\leq x\leq 1. The obtained (1/T1T1/T_1T) and K vs. x plots are in excellent agreement with ab initio calculations. This asserts experimentally the prediction that the Fermi surface is highly anisotropic, consisting mainly of hole-type 2-D cylindrical sheets from bonding 2px,y2p_{x,y} boron orbitals. It is also shown that the density of states at the Fermi level decreases sharply on Al doping and the 2-D sheets collapse at x≈0.55x\approx 0.55, where the superconductive phase disappears.

Crystal and magnetic structure of the La1−x_{1-x}Cax_{x}MnO3_{3} compound (x=0.8,0.85)(x=0.8,0.85)

We studied the crystal and magnetic structure of the La1−x_{1-x}Cax_{x}MnO3_{3} compound for x=0.8x=0.8 and x=0.85x=0.85. At T=300 K both samples are paramagnetic with crystallographic symmetry PnmaPnma. At low temperatures they undergo a monoclinic distortion from orthorhombic PnmaPnma-type structure with ap2×2ap×ap2a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2} to a monoclinic structure with (ap2×2ap×ap2a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}, β=90+ε∼91.4oβ=90+ε\sim 91.4^{\rm o}) and P21/mP2_1/m space group below TNT_N. The onset of the structural transformation coincides with the development of the CC-type long range antiferromagnetic order with propagation vector k=(1/2,0,1/2){\bf k}=({1/2},0,{1/2}). The monoclinic unit cell allowed us to determine the direction of the Mn magnetic moment with respect to the crystallographic axes: it is perpendicular to the propagation vector, m⊥k=(1/2,0,1/2){\bf m}\perp {\bf k}=({1/2},0,{1/2}). The amplitude of the ordered magnetic moment at T=1.6T=1.6 K is found to be 2.53(2)2.53(2) and 2.47(2)μB2.47(2)μ_{B} for x=0.8x=0.8 and 0.85, respectively.

Phase separation in La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 doped with 1% 119^{119}Sn detected by Mössbauer spectroscopy

1% 119^{119}Sn-doped La0.5_{0.5}Ca0.5_{0.5}MnO3_3 was studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetic moment and resistivity measurements. The Mössbauer spectra below the charge-ordering temperature are explained with ferromagnetic (FM), antiferromagnetic (AF), and ferromagnetic spin cluster (CL) components. The magnetic and thermal hystereses of the relative intensities of the components observed in the Mössbauer spectra, and of the bulk properties such as magnetic moment and electrical resistivity, in the temperature range 125-185 K, are characteristic of phase equilibrium in a first-order transition, i.e. of phase separation in the system below the charge-ordering (CO) transition. The cluster component displays a significant hyperfine field up to ∼125\sim 125 K. Above this temperature it exhibits superparamagnetism, becoming the dominant component above the charge-ordering transition. These results are discussed in the framework of recent investigations of the manganite system with other techniques which also show phase separation.
