Letter of Intent: the NA60+ experiment

We propose a new fixed-target experiment for the study of electromagnetic and hard probes of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN SPS. The experiment aims at performing measurements of the dimuon spectrum from threshold up to the charmonium region, and of hadronic decays of charm and strange hadrons. It is based on a muon spectrometer, which includes a toroidal magnet and six planes of tracking detectors, coupled to a vertex spectrometer, equipped with Si MAPS immersed in a dipole field. High luminosity is an essential requirement for the experiment, with the goal of taking data with 10$^6$ incident ions/s, at collision energies ranging from $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 6.3$ GeV ($E_{\rm lab}= 20$ A GeV) to top SPS energy ($\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 17.3$ GeV, $E_{\rm lab}= 158$ A GeV). This document presents the physics motivation, the foreseen experimental set-up including integration and radioprotection studies, the current detector choices together with the status of the corresponding R&D, and the outcome of physics performance studies. A preliminary cost evaluation is also carried out.

Thermal QCD phase transition and its scaling window from Wilson twisted mass fermions

We investigate the thermal QCD phase transition and its scaling properties on the lattice. The simulations are performed with $N_f=2+1+1$ Wilson twisted mass fermions at pion masses from physical up to heavy quark regime. We introduce a novel chiral order parameter, which is free from linear mass contributions and turns out to be very useful for the study of scaling behaviour. Our results are compatible with $O(4)$ universal scaling for the physical pion mass and the temperature range $[120:300]$ MeV. Violations to scaling at larger masses and other possible scenarios, including mean field behaviour and $Z(2)$ scaling scenario are also discussed. We provide an estimation for the critical temperature in the chiral limit $T_0$.

Properties of the QCD thermal transition with $N_f=2+1$ flavours of Wilson quark

We study properties of the thermal transition in QCD, using anisotropic, fixed-scale lattice simulations with $N_f = 2+1$ flavours of Wilson fermion. Observables are compared for two values of the pion mass, focusing on chiral properties. Results are presented for the Polyakov loop, various susceptibilities, the chiral condensate and its susceptibility, and the onset of parity doubling in the light and strange baryonic sector.

Heavy ions at the Future Circular Collider

The Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study is aimed at assessing the physics potential and the technical feasibility of a new collider with centre-of-mass energies, in the hadron-hadron collision mode, seven times larger than the nominal LHC energies. Operating such machine with heavy ions is an option that is being considered in the accelerator design studies. It would provide, for example, Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 39 and 63 TeV, respectively, per nucleon-nucleon collision, with integrated luminosities above 30 nb^-1 per month for Pb-Pb. This is a report by the working group on heavy-ion physics of the FCC Study. First ideas on the physics opportunities with heavy ions at the FCC are presented, covering the physics of the Quark-Gluon Plasma, of gluon saturation, of photon-induced collisions, as well as connections with other fields of high-energy physics.

INFN What Next: Ultra-relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

This document was prepared by the community that is active in Italy, within INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare), in the field of ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The experimental study of the phase diagram of strongly-interacting matter and of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) deconfined state will proceed, in the next 10-15 years, along two directions: the high-energy regime at RHIC and at the LHC, and the low-energy regime at FAIR, NICA, SPS and RHIC. The Italian community is strongly involved in the present and future programme of the ALICE experiment, the upgrade of which will open, in the 2020s, a new phase of high-precision characterisation of the QGP properties at the LHC. As a complement of this main activity, there is a growing interest in a possible future experiment at the SPS, which would target the search for the onset of deconfinement using dimuon measurements. On a longer timescale, the community looks with interest at the ongoing studies and discussions on a possible fixed-target programme using the LHC ion beams and on the Future Circular Collider.

Heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in the LHC era: from proton-proton to heavy-ion collisions

This report reviews the study of open heavy-flavour and quarkonium production in high-energy hadronic collisions, as tools to investigate fundamental aspects of Quantum Chromodynamics, from the proton and nucleus structure at high energy to deconfinement and the properties of the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Emphasis is given to the lessons learnt from LHC Run 1 results, which are reviewed in a global picture with the results from SPS and RHIC at lower energies, as well as to the questions to be addressed in the future. The report covers heavy flavour and quarkonium production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This includes discussion of the effects of hot and cold strongly interacting matter, quarkonium photo-production in nucleus-nucleus collisions and perspectives on the study of heavy flavour and quarkonium with upgrades of existing experiments and new experiments. The report results from the activity of the SaporeGravis network of the I3 Hadron Physics programme of the European Union 7th Framework Programme.

Topological susceptibility from $N_f=2+1+1$ lattice QCD at nonzero temperature

We present results for the topological susceptibility at nonzero temperature obtained from lattice QCD with four dynamical quark flavours. We apply different smoothing methods, including gradient Wilson flow and over--improved cooling, before calculating the susceptibility. It is shown that the considered smoothing techniques basically agree among each other, and that there are simple scaling relations between flow time and the number of cooling/smearing steps. The topological susceptibility exhibits a surprisingly slow decrease at high temperature.

Towards the quark--gluon plasma Equation of State with dynamical strange and charm quarks

We present an ongoing project aimed at determining the thermodynamic Equation of State (EoS) of quark--gluon matter from lattice QCD with two generations of dynamical quarks. We employ the Wilson twisted mass implementation for the fermionic fields and the improved Iwasaki gauge action. Relying on $T=0$ data obtained by the ETM Collaboration the strange and charm quark masses are fixed at their physical values, while the pion mass takes four values in the range from 470 MeV down to 210 MeV. The temperature is varied within a fixed--lattice scale approach. The values for the pseudocritical temperature are obtained from various observables. For the EoS we show preliminary results for the pure gluonic contribution obtained at the pion mass value 370 MeV, where we can compare with previously obtained results with $N_f=2$ degenerate light flavours.

On the particle spectrum and the conformal window

We study the SU(3) gauge theory with twelve flavours of fermions in the fundamental representation as a prototype of non-Abelian gauge theories inside the conformal window. Guided by the pattern of underlying symmetries, chiral and conformal, we analyze the two-point functions theoretically and on the lattice, and determine the finite size scaling and the infinite volume fermion mass dependence of the would-be hadron masses. We show that the spectrum in the Coulomb phase of the system can be described in the context of a universal scaling analysis and we provide the nonperturbative determination of the fermion mass anomalous dimension gamma*=0.235(46) at the infrared fixed point. We comment on the agreement with the four-loop perturbative prediction for this quantity and we provide a unified description of all existing lattice results for the spectrum of this system, them being in the Coulomb phase or the asymptotically free phase. Our results corroborate the view that the fixed point we are studying is not associated to a physical singularity along the bare coupling line and estimates of physical observables can be attempted on either side of the fixed point. Finally, we observe the restoration of the U(1) axial symmetry in the two-point functions.

One,Two,Zero: Scales of Strong Interactions

We discuss our results on QCD with a number of fundamental fermions ranging from zero to sixteen. These theories exhibit a wide array of fascinating phenomena which have been under close scrutiny, especially in recent years, first and foremost is the approach to conformality. To keep this review focused, we have chosen scale generation, or lack thereof as a guiding theme, however the discussion will be set in the general framework of the analysis of the phases and phase transitions of strong interactions at zero and nonzero temperature.

Quark-Gluon Plasma: from lattice simulations to experimental results

Theoretical studies of quarkonia can elucidate some of the important properties of the quark--gluon plasma, the state of matter realised when the temperature exceeds 150 MeV, currently probed by heavy-ion collisions experiments at BNL and the LHC. We report on our results of lattice studies of bottomonia for temperatures in the range 100 MeV < T < 450 MeV, introducing and discussing the methodologies we have applied. Of particular interest is the analysis of the spectral functions, where Bayesian methods borrowed and adapted from nuclear and condensed matter physics have proven very successful.

The equation of state of quark-gluon matter from lattice QCD with two flavors of twisted-mass Wilson fermions

We report on lattice QCD results for the thermodynamic equation of state of quark-gluon matter obtained with Nf=2 degenerate quark flavors. For the fermion field discretization we are using the Wilson-twisted mass prescription. Simulations have been carried out at three values of the bare quark masses corresponding to pion masses of 360, 430 and 640 MeV. We highlight the importance of a good control of the lattice cutoff dependence of the trace anomaly which we have studied at several values of the inverse temperature 1/T = a Nt with a time-like lattice extent up to Nt=12. We contrast our results with those of other groups obtained for Nf=0 and Nf=2+1. At low temperature we also confront them with hadron resonance gas model predictions for the trace anomaly.

High Temperature QCD

I review recent results on QCD at high temperature on a lattice. Steady progress with staggered fermions and Wilson type fermions allow a quantitative description of hot QCD whose accuracy in many cases parallels that of zero temperature studies. Simulations with chiral quarks are coming of age, and togheter with theoretical developments trigger interesting developments in the analysis of the critical region. Issues related with the universality class of the chiral transition and the fate of the axial symmetry are discussed in the light of new numerical and analytical results. Transport coefficients and analysis of bottomonium spectra compare well with results of heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. Model field theories, lattice simulations and high temperature systematic expansions help building a coherent picture of the high temperature phase of QCD. The (strongly coupled) Quark Gluon Plasma is heavily investigated, and asserts its role as an inspiring theoretical laboratory.

Making the most of Taylor expansion and imaginary chemical potential

We present preliminary results for the curvature of the pseudocritical line and susceptibilities in Nf = 2 + 1 flavor QCD. The computations are carried out on lattice sizes of 16x16x16x4, at matching parameters of early work of the Bielefeld group. Emphasis is placed on the control of systematic errors, by cross-validating results obtained by use of the Taylor expansion and measurements at imaginary chemical potential. To this end, we generalize the magnetic equation of state to the analysis of the number density, and we extend it to imaginary values of the chemical potential.

Melting of P wave bottomonium states in the quark-gluon plasma from lattice NRQCD

We study the fate of P wave bottomonium states in the quark-gluon plasma, using a spectral function analysis of euclidean lattice correlators. The correlators are obtained from lattice QCD simulations with two light quark flavours on highly anisotropic lattices, treating the bottom quark nonrelativistically. We find clear indications of melting immediately after the deconfinement transition.

Bottomonium from lattice QCD as a probe of the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We study the temperature dependence of bottomonium for temperatures in the range 0.4 Tc < T < 2.1 Tc, using non-relativistic dynamics for the bottom quark and full relativistic lattice QCD simulations for Nf=2 light flavors. We consider the behaviour of the correlators in Euclidean space, we analyze the associated spectral functions and we study the dependence on the momentum. Our results are amenable to a successful comparison with effective field theories. They help build a coherent picture of the behaviour of bottomonium in the plasma, consistent which the current LHC results.

The thermal QCD transition with two flavours of twisted mass fermions

We investigate the thermal QCD transition with two flavors of maximally twisted mass fermions for a set of pion masses, 300 MeV \textless $m_π$ \textless 500 MeV, and lattice spacings $a$ \textless 0.09 fm. We determine the pseudo-critical temperatures and discuss their extrapolation to the chiral limit using scaling forms for different universality classes, as well as the scaling form for the magnetic equation of state. For all pion masses considered we find resonable consistency with O(4) scaling plus leading corrections. However, a true distinction between the O(4) scenario and a first order scenario in the chiral limit requires lighter pions than are currently in use in simulations of Wilson fermions.

Bottomonium above deconfinement in lattice nonrelativistic QCD

We study the temperature dependence of bottomonium for temperatures in the range $0.4 T_c < T < 2.1 T_c$, using nonrelativistic dynamics for the bottom quark and full relativistic lattice QCD simulations for $N_f=2$ light flavors on a highly anisotropic lattice. We find that the $Υ$ is insensitive to the temperature in this range, while the $χ_b$ propagators show a crossover from the exponential decay characterizing the hadronic phase to a power-law behaviour consistent with nearly-free dynamics at $T \simeq 2 T_c$.

Chiral symmetry of QCD with twelve light flavors

We study QCD with twelve light flavors at intermediate values of the bare lattice coupling. We contrast the results for the order parameter with different theoretical models motivated by the physics of the Goldstone phase and of the symmetric phase, and we perform a model independent analysis of the meson spectrum inspired by universal properties of chiral symmetry. Our analysis favors chiral symmetry restoration.

Evidence for a conformal phase in SU(N) gauge theories

We discuss the existence of a conformal phase in SU(N) gauge theories in four dimensions. In this lattice study we explore the model in the bare parameter space, varying the lattice coupling and bare mass. Simulations are carried out with three colors and twelve flavors of dynamical staggered fermions in the fundamental representation. The analysis of the chiral order parameter and the mass spectrum of the theory indicates the restoration of chiral symmetry at zero temperature and the presence of a Coulomb-like phase, depicting a scenario compatible with the existence of an infrared stable fixed point at nonzero coupling. Our analysis supports the conclusion that the onset of the conformal window for QCD-like theories is smaller than Nf=12, before the loss of asymptotic freedom at sixteen and a half flavors. We discuss open questions and future directions.

How the Quark Number fluctuates in QCD at small chemical potential

We discuss the distribution of the quark number over the gauge fields for QCD at nonzero quark chemical potential. As the quark number operator is non-hermitian, the distribution is over the complex plane. Moreover, because of the fermion determinant, the distribution is not real and positive. The computation is carried out within leading order chiral perturbation theory and gives direct insight into the delicate cancellations that take place in contributions to the total baryon number.

Distributions of the Phase Angle of the Fermion Determinant in QCD

The distribution of the phase angle and the magnitude of the fermion determinant as well as its correlations with the baryon number and the chiral condensate are studied for QCD at non zero quark chemical potential. Results are derived to one-loop order in chiral perturbation theory. We find that the distribution of the phase angle is Gaussian for small chemical potential and a periodic Lorentzian when the quark mass is inside the support of the Dirac spectrum. The baryon number and chiral condensate are computed as a function of the phase of the fermion determinant and we discuss the severe cancellations which occur upon integration over the angle. We compute the distribution of the magnitude of the fermion determinant as well as the baryon number and chiral condensate at fixed magnitude. Finally, we consider QCD in one Euclidean dimension where it is shown analytically, starting from the fundamental QCD partition function, that the distribution of the phase of the fermion determinant is a periodic Lorentzian when the quark mass is inside the spectral density of the Dirac operator.

Fluctuations, correlations and the sign problem in QCD

We study the distribution of the phase angle and the magnitude of the fermion determinant as well as its correlation with the chiral condensate and the baryon number for QCD at non-zero quark chemical potential. Results are derived to one-loop order in Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), as well as by analytical and numerical calculations in QCD in one Euclidean dimension. We find a qualitative change of the distribution of the phase of the fermion determinant when the quark mass enters the spectrum of the Dirac operator: it changes from a periodicized Gaussian distribution to a periodicized Lorentzian distribution. We also explore the possibility that some observables remain weakly correlated with the phase of the fermion determinant even though the sign problem is severe. We discuss the practical implications of our findings on lattice simulations of QCD at non-zero baryon chemical potential.

Phase structure of thermal lattice QCD with N_f=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions

We present numerical results for the phase diagram of lattice QCD at finite temperature in the formulation with twisted mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action. Our simulations are performed on lattices with temporal extent N_τ=8, and lattice coupling βranging from strong coupling to the scaling domain. Covering a wide range in the space spanned by the lattice coupling βand the hopping and twisted mass parameters κand μ, respectively, we obtain a comprehensive picture of the rich phase structure of the lattice theory. In particular, we verify the existence of an Aoki phase in the strong coupling region and the realisation of the Sharpe-Singleton scenario at intermediate couplings. In the weak coupling region we identify the phase boundary for the physical finite temperature phase transition/crossover. Its shape in the three-dimensional parameter space is consistent with Creutz's conjecture of a cone-shaped thermal transition surface.

The Fluctuations of the Quark Number and of the Chiral Condensate

The distributions of the quark number and chiral condensate over the gauge fields are computed for QCD in Euclidean space at nonzero quark chemical potential. As both operators are non-hermitian the distributions are in the complex plane. Moreover, because of the sign problem, the distributions are not real and positive. The computations are carried out within leading order chiral perturbation theory and give a direct insight into the delicate cancellations that take place in contributions to the total baryon number and the chiral condensate.

Hunting for the Conformal Window

Undeniably, the imminent activity of LHC and the quest for the nature of physics beyond the standard model have raised renewed interest in the conformal and quasi-conformal behaviour of gauge field theories with matter content. Theoretically driven questions seem to now acquire a strong experimental appeal and might guide us towards a more realistic string theory to field theory connection, originally inspired by the AdS/CFT conjecture. In this brief report, we discuss the state of the art of our search for the conformal window in the SU(3) colour-gauge theory with fermions in the fundamental representation.

The finite-temperature phase structure of lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions

We report progress in our exploration of the finite-temperature phase structure of two-flavour lattice QCD with twisted-mass Wilson fermions and a tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action for a temporal lattice size N_τ=8. Extending our investigations to a wider region of parameter space we gain a global view of the rich phase structure. We identify the finite temperature transition/crossover for a non-vanishing twisted-mass parameter in the neighbourhood of the zero-temperature critical line at sufficiently high β. Our findings are consistent with Creutz's conjecture of a conical shape of the finite temperature transition surface. Comparing with NLO lattice chiral perturbation theory we achieve an improved understanding of this shape.
