A study on correlation effects in two dimensional topological insulators

We investigate correlation effects in two dimensional topological insulators (TI). In the first part, we discuss finite size effects for interacting systems of different sizes in a ribbon geometry. For large systems, there are two pairs of well separated massless modes on both edges. For these systems, we analyze the finite size effects using a standard bosonization approach. For small systems, where the edge states are massive Dirac fermions, we use the inhomogeneous dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) combined with iterative perturbation theory as an impurity solver to study interaction effects. We show that the finite size gap in the edge states is renormalized for weak interactions, which is consistent with a Fermi-liquid picture for small size TIs. In the second part, we investigate phase transitions in finite size TIs at zero temperature focusing on the effects of possible inter-edge Umklapp scattering for the edge states within the inhomogeneous DMFT using the numerical renormalization group. We show that correlation effects are effectively stronger near the edge sites because the coordination number is smaller than in the bulk. Therefore, the localization of the edge states around the edge sites, which is a fundamental property in TIs, is weakened for strong coupling strengths. However, we find no signs for "edge Mott insulating states" and the system stays in the topological insulating state, which is adiabatically connected to the non-interacting state, for all interaction strengths smaller than the critical value. Increasing the interaction further, a nearly homogeneous Mott insulating state is stabilized.

Statistics of holes and nature of superfluid phases in Quantum dimer models

Quantum Dimer Models (QDM) arise as low energy effective models for frustrated magnets. Some of these models have proven successful in generating a scenario for exotic spin liquid phases with deconfined spinons. Doping, i.e. the introduction of mobile holes, has been considered within the QDM framework and partially studied. A fundamental issue is the possible existence of a superconducting phase in such systems and its properties. For this purpose, the question of the statistics of the mobile holes (or "holons") shall be addressed first. Such issues are studied in details in this paper for generic doped QDM defined on the most common two-dimensional lattices (square, triangular, honeycomb, kagome,...) and involving general resonant loops. We prove a general "statistical transmutation" symmetry of such doped QDM by using composite operators of dimers and holes. This exact transformation enables to define duality equivalence classes (or families) of doped QDM, and provides the analytic framework to analyze dynamical statistical transmutations. We discuss various possible superconducting phases of the system. In particular, the possibility of an exotic superconducting phase originating from the condensation of (bosonic) charge-e holons is examined. A numerical evidence of such a superconducting phase is presented in the case of the triangular lattice, by introducing a novel gauge-invariant holon Green's function. We also make the connection with a Bose-Hubbard model on the kagome lattice which gives rise, as an effective model in the limit of strong interactions, to a doped QDM on the triangular lattice.

Quantum phase transitions in three-leg spin tubes

We investigate the properties of a three-leg quantum spin tube using several techniques such as the density matrix renormalization group method, strong coupling approaches and the non linear sigma model. For integer spins S, the model proves to exhibit a particularly rich phase diagram consisting of an ensemble of 2S phase transitions. They can be accurately identified by the behavior of a non local string order parameter associated to the breaking of a hidden symmetry in the Hamiltonian. The nature of these transitions are further elucidated within the different approaches. We carry a detailed DMRG analysis in the specific cases S = 1. The numerical data confirm the existence of two Haldane phases with broken hidden symmetry separated by a trivial singlet state. The study of the gap and of the von Neumann entropy suggest a first order phase transition but at the close proximity of a tricritical point separating a gapless and a first order transition line in the phase diagram of the quantum spin tube.

Realization of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute magnons in TlCuCl$_3$

The recent observation [Oosawa et al. J. Phys. : Condens. Matter {\bf 11}, 265 (1999)] of the field-induced Néel ordering in a spin-gap magnetic compound TlCuCl$_3$ is interpreted as a Bose-Einstein Condensation of magnons. A mean-field calculation based on this picture is shown to describe well the temperature dependence of the magnetization. The present system opens a new area for studying Bose-Einstein condensation of thermodynamically large number of particles in a grand-canonical ensemble.

A novel intermediate phase in S=2 antiferromagnetic chains with uniaxial anisotropy

We study ground state properties of the $S=2$ quantum antiferromagnetic chain with a uniaxially anisotropic Hamiltonian: $ H = \sum_{j} [S_{j} \cdot S_{j+1} + D (S^{z}_{j})^2 ] $ by a Monte Carlo calculation. While it has been reported that a string order parameter vanishes exponentially at the isotropic Heisenberg point ($D=0$), we found it tends to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit around $D=1.2$. This implies that the model for $S=2$ has a novel intermediate phase between the Haldane phase and the large-$D$ phase, as was anticipated from the earlier argument based on the Valence-Bond-Solid picture.

The Effect of Dynamical Gauge Field on the Chiral Fermion on a boundary

We study the effect of dynamical gauge field on the Kaplan's chiral fermion on a boundary in the strong gauge coupling limit in the extra dimension. To all orders of the hopping parameter expansion, we prove exact parity invariance of the fermion propagator on the boundary. This means that the chiral property of the boundary fermion, which seems to survive even in the presence of the gauge field from a perturbative point of view, is completely destroyed by the dynamics of the gauge field.
