Minimizers of anisotropic perimeters with cylindrical norms

We study various regularity properties of minimizers of the $Φ$--perimeter, where $Φ$ is a norm. Under suitable assumptions on $Φ$ and on the dimension of the ambient space, we prove that the boundary of a cartesian minimizer is locally a Lipschitz graph out of a closed singular set of small Hausdorff dimension. Moreover, we show the following anisotropic Bernstein-type result: any entire cartesian minimizer is the subgraph of a monotone function depending only on one variable.

Front propagation in geometric and phase field models of stratified media

We study front propagation problems for forced mean curvature flows and their phase field variants that take place in stratified media, i.e., heterogeneous media whose characteristics do not vary in one direction. We consider phase change fronts in infinite cylinders whose axis coincides with the symmetry axis of the medium. Using the recently developed variational approaches, we provide a convergence result relating asymptotic in time front propagation in the diffuse interface case to that in the sharp interface case, for suitably balanced nonlinearities of Allen-Cahn type. The result is established by using arguments in the spirit of $Γ$-convergence, to obtain a correspondence between the minimizers of an exponentially weighted Ginzburg-Landau type functional and the minimizers of an exponentially weighted area type functional. These minimizers yield the fastest traveling waves invading a given stable equilibrium in the respective models and determine the asymptotic propagation speeds for front-like initial data. We further show that generically these fronts are the exponentially stable global attractors for this kind of initial data and give sufficient conditions under which complete phase change occurs via the formation of the considered fronts.

A symmetry result for the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator

In 1978 E. De Giorgi formulated a conjecture concerning the one-dimensional symmetry of bounded solutions to the elliptic equation Δu=F'(u), which are monotone in some direction. In this paper we prove the analogous statement for the equation Δu - <x, Du> =F'(u), where the Laplacian is replaced by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator. Our theorem holds without any restriction on the dimension of the ambient space, and this allows us to obtain an similar result in infinite dimensions by a limit procedure.

Global exponential convergence to variational traveling waves in cylinders

We prove, under generic assumptions, that the special variational traveling wave that minimizes the exponentially weighted Ginzburg-Landau functional associated with scalar reaction-diffusion equations in infinite cylinders is the long-time attractor for the solutions of the initial value problems with front-like initial data. The convergence to this traveling wave is exponentially fast. The obtained result is mainly a consequence of the gradient flow structure of the considered equation in the exponentially weighted spaces and does not depend on the precise details of the problem. It strengthens our earlier generic propagation and selection result for "pushed" fronts.

Multiplicity of supercritical fronts for reaction-diffusion equations in cylinders

We study multiplicity of the supercritical traveling front solutions for scalar reaction-diffusion equations in infinite cylinders which invade a linearly unstable equilibrium. These equations are known to possess traveling wave solutions connecting an unstable equilibrium to the closest stable equilibrium for all speeds exceeding a critical value. We show that these are, in fact, the only traveling front solutions in the considered problems for sufficiently large speeds. In addition, we show that other traveling fronts connecting to the unstable equilibrium may exist in a certain range of the wave speed. These results are obtained with the help of a variational characterization of such solutions.

Compactness and convexity results for closed relativistic strings

We study various properties of closed relativistic strings. In particular, we characterize their closure under uniform convergence, extending a previous result by Y. Brenier on graph-like unbounded strings, and we discuss some related examples. Then we study the collapsing profile of convex planar strings which start with zero initial velocity, and we obtain a result analogous to the well-known theorem of Gage and Hamilton for the curvature flow of plane curves. We conclude the paper with the discussion of an example of weak Lipschitz evolution starting from the square in the plane, which exhibits some unexpected features.

Geometric strong segregation theory for compositionally asymmetric diblock copolymer melts

We have identified the effect of the Wigner-Seitz cell geometry in the strong segregation limit of diblock copolymer melts with strong composition asymmetry. A variational problem is proposed describing the distortions of the chain paths due to the geometric constraints imposed by the cell shape. We computed the geometric excess energies for cylindrical phases arranged into hexagonal, square, and triangular lattices and explicitly demonstrated that the hexagonal lattice has the lowest energy for a fixed cell area.
