ττ lepton mass measurement at Belle II

The reconstruction of tau-pair production, e+e−→τ+τ−e^{+}e^{-} \to τ^{+}τ^{-}, from the subsequent 3-prong (τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ) and 1-prong (τ−→ℓ−νˉℓνττ^{-} \to \ell^{-} \barν_{\ell} ν_τ, τ−→h−νττ^{-} \to h^{-} ν_τ or τ−→π−π0νττ^{-} \to π^{-} π^0 ν_τ) decays, is presented using 8.8 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data of Belle II at the center-of-mass energy s=mΥ(4S)\sqrt{s} = m_{Υ(4S)}. The pseudomass technique developed by the ARGUS experiment is used to measure the ττ-lepton mass mτm_τ in the 3-prong τ+→π+π−π+νˉττ^{+} \to π^{+} π^{-} π^{+} \barν_τ decay, resulting in mτ=1777.28±0.75 (stat.)±0.33 (sys.) MeV/c2m_τ = 1777.28 \pm 0.75~{\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.33 ~{\rm (sys.)}~{\rm{MeV}/\rm{c}^2}.

A calibration of the Belle II hadronic tag-side reconstruction algorithm with B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν decays

Tag-side reconstruction is an important method for reconstructing BB meson decays with missing energy. The Belle II tag-side reconstruction algorithm, Full Event Interpretation, relies on a hierarchical reconstruction of BB meson decays with multivariate classification employed at each stage of reconstruction. Given the large numbers of classifiers employed and decay chains reconstructed, the performance of the algorithm on data and simulation differs significantly. Here, calibration factors are derived for hadronic tag-side BB decays by measuring a signal side decay, B→XℓνB \rightarrow X\ell ν, in 34.634.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data. For a very loose selection on the tag-side BB multivariate classifier, the calibration factors are 0.65±0.020.65 \pm 0.02 and 0.83±0.030.83 \pm 0.03 for tag-side B+B^{+} and B0B^{0} mesons, respectively.

Charmless BB decay reconstruction in 2019 Belle II data

We report on the reconstruction of various charmless BB decays from electron-positron collisions at the energy corresponding to the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use simulation to devise optimized event selections and apply them to the full data set collected in 2019, corresponding to 8.7\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We fit the difference between half of the collision energy and the BB candidate energy (in the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) frame) for events restricted to a signal-rich range in beam-energy-constrained mass to search for charmless signals. Signal yields of approximately 80, 15, 20, 30, 90, and 160 decays are reconstructed for the channels B0→K+π−B^0 \to K^+π^-, B0→π+π−B^0 \to π^+π^-, B+→KS0(→π+π−)π+B^+ \to K^0_S(\to π^+π^-)π^+, B+→K+π0(→γγ)B^+ \to K^+π^0(\to γγ), B+→K+K−K+B^+ \to K^+K^-K^+, and B+→K+π−π+B^+ \to K^+π^-π^+, respectively. Yields and background contaminations are compatible with those expected from simulation and comparable with those obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Exclusive B0→π−ℓ+νℓB^0 \to π^- \ell^+ ν_\ell Decays with Hadronic Full Event Interpretation Tagging in 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II Data

We present the results of the re-discovery of the decay B0→π−ℓ+νℓB^0 \to π^- \ell^+ ν_\ell in 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data using hadronic BB-tagging via the Full Event Interpretation algorithm. We observe 21 signal events on a background of 155 in a fit to the distribution of the square of the missing mass, Mmiss2M_{\mathrm{miss}}^2, with a significance of 5.69σσ, and determine a total branching fraction of (1.58 ±\pm 0.43stat_{\mathrm{stat}} ±\pm 0.07sys_{\mathrm{sys}}) ×10−4\times 10^{-4}.

First flavor tagging calibration using 2019 Belle II data

We report on the first calibration of the standard Belle II BB-flavor tagger using the full data set collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4{\rm S}) resonance in 2019 with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider, corresponding to 8.7 fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The calibration is performed by reconstructing various hadronic charmed BB-meson decays with flavor-specific final states. We use simulation to optimize our event selection criteria and to train the flavor tagging algorithm. We determine the tagging efficiency and the fraction of wrongly identified tag-side BB~candidates from a measurement of the time-integrated B0−B‾0B^0-\overline{B}^0 mixing probability. The total effective efficiency is measured to be εeff=(33.8±3.6(stat)±1.6(sys))%\varepsilon_{\rm eff} = \big(33.8 \pm 3.6(\text{stat}) \pm 1.6(\text{sys})\big)\%, which is in good agreement with the predictions from simulation and comparable with the best one obtained by the Belle experiment. The results show a good understanding of the detector performance and offer a basis for future calibrations.

Measurement of Hadronic Mass Moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle in B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν Decays at Belle II

We present measurements of the first six hadronic mass moments in semileptonic B→XcℓνB \rightarrow X_c \ell ν decays. The hadronic mass moments, together with other observables of inclusive BB decays, can be used to determine the CKM matrix element ∣Vcb∣|{V_{cb}}| and mass of the bb-quark mbm_b in the context of Heavy Quark Expansions of QCD. The Belle~II data recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance in 2019 and 2020 (March-July), corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.6  fb−134.6\;\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, is used for this measurement. The decay Υ(4S)→BB‾Υ(4S) \rightarrow B \overline{B} is reconstructed by applying the hadronic tagging algorithm provided by the Full Event Interpretation to fully reconstruct one BB meson. The second BB meson is reconstructed inclusively by selecting a high-momentum lepton. The XcX_c system is identified by the remaining reconstructed tracks and clusters in the electromagnetic calorimeter. We report preliminary results for the hadronic mass moments ⟨MXn⟩\langle M_X^n \rangle with n=1,…,6n=1,\dots,6, measured as a function of a lower cut on the lepton momentum in the signal BB rest frame.

Measurement of the B0B^0 lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of B0B^0 meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7±0.28.7 \pm 0.2 fb−1^{-1}. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. B0B^0 lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side B0B^0 candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is τB0=1.48±0.28±0.06τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the branching fraction B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉℓ){\cal B}(\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell) with early Belle II data

We measure the branching fractions for the decays Bˉ0→D∗+e−νˉe\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} e^{-} \barν_e and Bˉ0→D∗+μ−νˉμ\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} μ^{-} \barν_μ using 8.70±0.09 fb−18.70 \pm 0.09~{\rm fb}^{-1} of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Candidate signal decays are reconstructed with the subsequent decays D∗+→D0π+D^{*+}\to D^0 π^+ and D0→K−π+D^0\to K^-π^+. We obtain the results B(Bˉ0→D∗+e−νˉe){\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} e^{-} \barν_e) = (4.55±0.14(stat)±0.35(syst))%(4.55\pm0.14(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.35 (\mathrm{syst})) \% and B(Bˉ0→D∗+μ−νˉμ){\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} μ^{-} \barν_μ) = (4.84±0.13(stat)±0.37(syst))%(4.84\pm 0.13(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.37(\mathrm{syst})) \%, in agreement with the world averages. The measurements serve to validate the full chain of detector operation and calibration, data collection and processing, and production of physics results in the case of semileptonic BB-meson decays.

We present a first measurement of the B0ˉ→D∗+ℓ−νℓ\bar{B^{0}} \rightarrow D^{*+} \ell^{-} ν_{\ell} branching fraction using fully reconstructed BB meson decays employing the Full Event Interpretation algorithm. Collision events corresponding to an integrated luminosity of \lumi are analyzed, which were recorded by the Belle~II detector operated at the SuperKEKB accelerator complex. Measurements of branching fractions and CP-violating charge asymmetries in charmless BB decays reconstructed in 2019--2020 Belle~II data

We report on first measurements of branching fractions~(B\mathcal{B}) and CP-violating charge asymmetries~(A\mathcal{A}) in charmless BB decays at Belle~II. We use a sample of electron-positron collisions collected in 2019 and 2020 at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance and corresponding to 34.634.6\,fb−1^{-1} of integrated luminosity. We use simulation to determine optimized event selections. The ΔEΔE distributions of the resulting samples, restricted in MbcM_{\rm bc}, are fit to determine signal yields. Signal yields are corrected for efficiencies determined from simulation and control data samples to obtain branching fractions and CP-violating asymmetries for flavour-specific channels. These are the first measurements in charmless decays reported by Belle~II. Results are compatible with known determinations and show detector performance comparable with the best Belle results offering a reliable basis to assess projections for future reach.

Performance evaluation of the aerogel RICH counter for the Belle II spectrometer using early beam collision data

The Aerogel Ring Imaging Cherenkov (ARICH) counter serves as a particle identification device in the forward end-cap region of the Belle II spectrometer. It is capable of identifying pions and kaons with momenta up to 4 GeV/c4 \, {\rm GeV}/c by detecting Cherenkov photons emitted in the silica aerogel radiator. After the detector alignment and calibration of the probability density function, we evaluate the performance of the ARICH counter using early beam collision data. Event samples of D∗+→D0π+(D0→K−π+)D^{\ast +} \to D^0 π^+ (D^0 \to K^-π^+) were used to determine the π(K)π(K) efficiency and the K(π)K(π) misidentification probability. We found that the ARICH counter is capable of separating kaons from pions with an identification efficiency of 93.5±0.6 %93.5 \pm 0.6 \, \% at a pion misidentification probability of 10.9±0.9 %10.9 \pm 0.9 \, \%. This paper describes the identification method of the counter and the evaluation of the performance during its early operation.

Rediscovery of B→ϕK(∗)B \to ϕK^{(*)} decays and measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction fLf_L in B→ϕK∗B \to ϕK^{*} decays using the Summer 2020 Belle II dataset

We utilize a sample of 34.6 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, to search for the B+→ϕK+B^+ \to ϕK^+, B+→ϕK∗+B^+ \to ϕK^{*+}, B0→ϕKS0B^0 \to ϕK^0_S, and B0→ϕK∗0B^0 \to ϕK^{*0} decays. Charmless hadronic BB decays represent an important part of the Belle II physics program, and are an ideal benchmark to test the detector capabilities in terms of tracking efficiency, charged particle identification, vertexing, and advanced analysis techniques. Each channel is observed with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and we obtain measurements of their branching ratios that are in good agreement with the world averages. For the B→ϕK∗B \to ϕK^* modes, we also perform a measurement of the longitudinal polarization fraction fLf_L.

Search for an invisibly decaying Z′Z^{\prime} boson at Belle II in e+e−→μ+μ−(e±μ∓)e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp}) plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the Z′Z^{\prime}. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a Z′Z^{\prime} in the process e+e−→μ+μ−Z′e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime} and of a lepton-flavor-violating Z′Z^{\prime} in e+e−→e±μ∓Z′e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an Lμ−LτL_μ-L_τ theory, into upper limits on the Z′Z^{\prime} coupling constant at the level of 5×10−25 \times 10^{-2} -- 11 MZ′≤6M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6 GeV/c2c^2.

Studies of the semileptonic Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉℓ\bar B^0\to D^{*+}\ell^-\barν_\ell and B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell decay processes with 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of Belle II data

We report measurements of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l and B−→D0ℓ−νˉlB^- \to D^{0} \ell^{-} \barν_l processes using 34.6 fb−1^{-1} of collision events recorded by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. For the B−→D0ℓ−νˉℓB^-\to D^{0}\ell^-\barν_\ell channel, we present first studies that isolate this decay from other semileptonic processes and backgrounds. We report a measurement of the Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l branching fraction and obtain B(Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl)=(4.60±0.05stat±0.17syst±0.45πs)%{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l) = \left(4.60 \pm 0.05_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm0.17_{\mathrm{syst}} \pm 0.45_{π_s}\right) \%, in agreement with the world average. Here, the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and related to slow pion reconstruction, respectively. The systematic uncertainties are limited by the statistics of auxiliary measurements and will improve in the future. We also report differential branching fractions in five bins of the hadronic recoil parameter ww for Bˉ0→D∗+ℓ−νˉl\bar{B}^0 \to D^{*+} \ell^{-} \barν_l, unfolded to account for resolution and efficiency effects.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be (496.3±0.3±3.0496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0)~pb−1^{-1}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle~II.

Measurement of the radiative decay of polarized muons in the MEG experiment

We studied the radiative muon decay μ+→e+ννˉγμ^+ \to e^+ν\barνγ by using for the first time an almost fully polarized muon source. We identified a large sample (~13000) of these decays in a total sample of 1.8x10^14 positive muon decays collected in the MEG experiment in the years 2009--2010 and measured the branching ratio B(μ+→e+ννˉγμ^+ \to e^+ν\barνγ) = (6.03+-0.14(stat.)+-0.53(sys.))x10^-8 for E_e > 45 MeV and E_γ > 40 MeV, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. The precise measurement of this decay mode provides a basic tool for the timing calibration, a normalization channel, and a strong quality check of the complete MEG experiment in the search for μ+→e+γμ^+ \to e^+γ process.

Muon polarization in the MEG experiment: predictions and measurements

The MEG experiment makes use of one of the world's most intense low energy muon beams, in order to search for the lepton flavour violating process μ+→e+γμ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} γ. We determined the residual beam polarization at the thin stopping target, by measuring the asymmetry of the angular distribution of Michel decay positrons as a function of energy. The initial muon beam polarization at the production is predicted to be Pμ=−1P_μ = -1 by the Standard Model (SM) with massless neutrinos. We estimated our residual muon polarization to be Pμ=−0.85±0.03 (stat) −0.05+0.04 (syst)P_μ = -0.85 \pm 0.03 ~ {\rm (stat)} ~ { }^{+ 0.04}_{-0.05} ~ {\rm (syst)} at the stopping target, which is consistent with the SM predictions when the depolarizing effects occurring during the muon production, propagation and moderation in the target are taken into account. The knowledge of beam polarization is of fundamental importance in order to model the background of our ${\megsign}$ search induced by the muon radiative decay: μ+→e+νˉμνeγμ^{+} \rightarrow {\rm e}^{+} \barν_μ ν_{\rm e} γ.

Time resolution of time-of-flight detector based on multiple scintillation counters readout by SiPMs

A new timing detector measuring ~50 MeV/c positrons is under development for the MEG II experiment, aiming at a time resolution σt∼30 psσ_t \sim 30~\mathrm{ps}. The resolution is expected to be achieved by measuring each positron time with multiple counters made of plastic scintillator readout by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the time resolution for ~50 MeV/c positrons using prototype counters. Counters with dimensions of 90×40×5 mm390\times 40\times 5~\mathrm{mm}^3 readout by six SiPMs (three on each 40×5 mm240\times 5~\mathrm{mm}^2 plane) were built with SiPMs from Hamamatsu Photonics and AdvanSiD and tested in a positron beam at the DAΦΦNE Beam Test Facility. The time resolution was found to improve nearly as the square root of the number of counter hits. A time resolution σt=26.2±1.3 psσ_t=26.2\pm1.3~\mathrm{ps} was obtained with eight counters with Hamamatsu SiPMs. These results suggest that the design resolution is achievable in the MEG II experiment.

Moreover, the results obtained with a first prototype tested at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) of the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) are presented.

SππRIT: A time-projection chamber for symmetry-energy studies

A Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) called the SAMURAI Pion-Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker (SππRIT) has recently been constructed at Michigan State University as part of an international effort to constrain the symmetry-energy term in the nuclear Equation of State (EoS). The SππRIT TPC will be used in conjunction with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) at RIKEN to measure yield ratios for pions and other light isospin multiplets produced in central collisions of neutron-rich heavy ions, such as 132^{132}Sn + 124^{124}Sn. The SππRIT TPC can function both as a TPC detector and as an active target. It has a vertical drift length of 50 cm, parallel to the magnetic field. Gas multiplication is achieved through the use of a multi-wire anode. Image charges are produced in the 12096 pads, and are read out with the recently developed Generic Electronics for TPCs.

Coupling of the BLG theory to a conformal supergravity background

The Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson theory is coupled to an off-shell D=3, N=8 conformal supergravity background. Local transformation laws of the conformal supergravity multiplet are obtained from those of the D=4, N=8 SO(8) gauged supergravity. The complete Lagrangian and local transformation laws of the coupled theory are obtained. As an application the supercurrent multiplet in a flat background is obtained.

MEG Upgrade Proposal

We propose the continuation of the MEG experiment to search for the charged lepton flavour violating decay (cLFV) μ\to e γ, based on an upgrade of the experiment, which aims for a sensitivity enhancement of one order of magnitude compared to the final MEG result, down to the 6×10−146 \times 10^{-14} level. The key features of this new MEG upgrade are an increased rate capability of all detectors to enable running at the intensity frontier and improved energy, angular and timing resolutions, for both the positron and photon arms of the detector. On the positron-side a new low-mass, single volume, high granularity tracker is envisaged, in combination with a new highly segmented, fast timing counter array, to track positron from a thinner stopping target. The photon-arm, with the largest liquid xenon (LXe) detector in the world, totalling 900 l, will also be improved by increasing the granularity at the incident face, by replacing the current photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a larger number of smaller photosensors and optimizing the photosensor layout also on the lateral faces. A new DAQ scheme involving the implementation of a new combined readout board capable of integrating the diverse functions of digitization, trigger capability and splitter functionality into one condensed unit, is also under development. We describe here the status of the MEG experiment, the scientific merits of the upgrade and the experimental methods we plan to use.

Perturbations and Supersymmetries in AdS_3/CFT_2

Symmetry breaking by perturbations in the AdS/CFT correspondence is discussed. Perturbations of vector fields to the AdS_3 x S^3 solution of the six-dimensional N=(4,4) supergravity are considered. These perturbations are identified as descendents of chiral primary operators of a two-dimensional N=(4,4) CFT with conformal weight (2,2) or (1,1). We examine unbroken symmetries by the perturbations in the CFT side as well as in the supergravity side and find the same result: the N=(4,2) or N=(2,4) Poincare supersymmetry for the (2,2) perturbation and the N=(0,4) or N=(4,0) superconformal symmetry for the (1,1) perturbation.
