Updated constraints on sterile neutrino mixing in the OPERA experiment using a new νeν_e identification method

This paper describes a new νeν_e identification method specifically designed to improve the low-energy (<30 GeV< 30\,\mathrm{GeV}) νeν_e identification efficiency attained by enlarging the emulsion film scanning volume with the next generation emulsion readout system. A relative increase of 25-70% in the νeν_e low-energy region is expected, leading to improvements in the OPERA sensitivity to neutrino oscillations in the framework of the 3 + 1 model. The method is applied to a subset of data where the detection efficiency increase is expected to be more relevant, and one additional νeν_e candidate is found. The analysis combined with the ντν_τ appearance results improves the upper limit on sin⁡22θμe\sin^2 2θ_{μe} to 0.016 at 90% C.L. in the MiniBooNE allowed region Δm412∼0.3 eV2Δm^2_{41} \sim 0.3\,\mathrm{eV}^2.

First observation of a tau neutrino charged current interaction with charm production in the Opera experiment

An event topology with two secondary vertices compatible with the decay of short-lived particles was found in the analysis of neutrino interactions in the Opera target. The observed topology is compatible with tau neutrino charged current (CC) interactions with charm production and neutrino neutral current (NC) interactions with cc‾c\overline{c} pair production. However, other processes can mimic this topology. A dedicated analysis was implemented to identify the underlying process. A Monte Carlo simulation was developed and complementary procedures were introduced in the kinematic reconstruction. A multivariate analysis technique was used to achieve an optimal separation of signal from background. Most likely, this event is a ντν_τ CC interaction with charm production, the tau and charm particle decaying into 1 prong and 2 prongs, respectively. The significance of this observation is evaluated.

A facility to Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) at the CERN SPS

A new general purpose fixed target facility is proposed at the CERN SPS accelerator which is aimed at exploring the domain of hidden particles and make measurements with tau neutrinos. Hidden particles are predicted by a large number of models beyond the Standard Model. The high intensity of the SPS 400~GeV beam allows probing a wide variety of models containing light long-lived exotic particles with masses below O{\cal O}(10)~GeV/c2^2, including very weakly interacting low-energy SUSY states. The experimental programme of the proposed facility is capable of being extended in the future, e.g. to include direct searches for Dark Matter and Lepton Flavour Violation.

Affine threefolds admitting GaG_a-actions

Affine varieties of dimension greater than two can be explored their structures with the help of fibrations by the affine line or plane and quotient morphisms by Ga\mathbb{G}_a-actions. We consider Ga\mathbb{G}_a-actions on affine threefolds and discuss the structure and the singularities of the quotient surface as well as the singular fibers of the quotient morphism. Relative Ga\mathbb{G}_a and Gm\mathbb{G}_m-actions on A4\mathbb{A}^4 or on an affine 4-fold having A3\mathbb{A}^3-fibrations over A1\mathbb{A}^1 are discussed when the actions leave one variable invariant or the fibration invariant.

Discovery of tau neutrino appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment was designed to search for νμ→ντν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ oscillations in appearance mode, i.e. by detecting the ττ-leptons produced in charged current ντν_τ interactions. The experiment took data from 2008 to 2012 in the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam. The observation of νμ→ντν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ appearance, achieved with four candidate events in a sub-sample of the data, was previously reported. In this paper, a fifth ντν_τ candidate event, found in an enlarged data sample, is described. Together with a further reduction of the expected background, the candidate events detected so far allow assessing the discovery of νμ→ντν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ oscillations in appearance mode with a significance larger than 5 σσ.

Evidence for νμ→ντν_μ\to ν_τ appearance in the CNGS neutrino beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment is designed to search for νμ→ντν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ oscillations in appearance mode i.e. through the direct observation of the ττ lepton in ντν_τ charged current interactions. The experiment has taken data for five years, since 2008, with the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam. Previously, two ντν_τ candidates with a ττ decaying into hadrons were observed in a sub-sample of data of the 2008-2011 runs. Here we report the observation of a third ντν_τ candidate in the τ−→μ−τ^-\toμ^- decay channel coming from the analysis of a sub-sample of the 2012 run. Taking into account the estimated background, the absence of νμ→ντν_μ \rightarrow ν_τ oscillations is excluded at the 3.4 σσ level.

Observation of nu_tau appearance in the CNGS beam with the OPERA experiment

The OPERA experiment is searching for nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations in appearance mode i.e. via the direct detection of tau leptons in nu_tau charged current interactions. The evidence of nu_mu -> nu_tau appearance has been previously reported with three nu_tau candidate events using a sub-sample of data from the 2008-2012 runs. We report here a fourth nu_tau candidate event, with the tau decaying into a hadron, found after adding the 2012 run events without any muon in the final state to the data sample. Given the number of analysed events and the low background, nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations are established with a significance of 4.2sigma.

New results on νμ→ντν_μ\to ν_τ appearance with the OPERA experiment in the CNGS beam

The OPERA neutrino experiment is designed to perform the first observation of neutrino oscillations in direct appearance mode in the νμ→ντν_μ\to ν_τ channel, via the detection of the ττ-leptons created in charged current ντν_τ interactions. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consists of an emulsion/lead target with an average mass of about 1.2 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It is exposed to the CERN Neutrinos to Gran Sasso beam, with a baseline of 730 km and a mean energy of 17 GeV. The observation of the first ντν_τ candidate event and the analysis of the 2008-2009 neutrino sample have been reported in previous publications. This work describes substantial improvements in the analysis and in the evaluation of the detection efficiencies and backgrounds using new simulation tools. The analysis is extended to a sub-sample of 2010 and 2011 data, resulting from an electronic detector-based pre-selection, in which an additional ντν_τ candidate has been observed. The significance of the two events in terms of a νμ→ντν_μ\to ν_τ oscillation signal is of 2.40 σσ.

A∗1\mathbb{A}^1_*-fibrations on affine threefolds

The affine line minus one point is the underlying space of the algebraic torus of dimension one. However the fibration of an affine algebraic threefold by the affine line minus one point is not always the quotient morphism of the threefold by the algebraic torus. We investigate the structure of affine algebraic threefolds having fibrations by the affine line minus one point. Our results cover not only algebro-geometric but also topological properties of the threefolds. We also consider when the fibration by the affine line minus one point becomes the quotient morphism by an algebraic torus of dimension one.

Surjective derivations in small dimensions

Inspired by a result of D. Cerveau on surjective derivations on a polynomial ring in two variables over a complex number field C, we consider a surjective derivation defined on an affine domain over C of dimension one or two. Though our proofs are mostly algebraic or algebro-geometric, the idea using a result of Dimca-Saito which is behind the arguments of Cerveau and based on the differential complex of the polynomial ring in n variables is inspiring and affects our arguments.

Measurement of charm production in neutrino charged-current interactions

The nuclear emulsion target of the CHORUS detector was exposed to the wide-band neutrino beam of the CERN SPS of 27 GeV average neutrino energy from 1994 to 1997. In total about 100000 charged-current neutrino interactions with at least one identified muon were located in the emulsion target and fully reconstructed, using newly developed automated scanning systems. Charmed particles were searched for by a program recognizing particle decays. The observation of the decay in nuclear emulsion makes it possible to select a sample with very low background and minimal kinematical bias. 2013 charged-current interactions with a charmed hadron candidate in the final state were selected and confirmed through visual inspection. The charm production rate induced by neutrinos relative to the charged-current cross-section is measured to be sigma(nu_mu N -> mu- C X)/sigma(CC) = (5.75 +-0.32 stat +-0.30 syst)%. The charm production cross-section as a function of the neutrino energy is also obtained. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements. The charm-quark hadronization produces the following charmed hadrons with relative fractions (in %): f_Dzero = 43.7+-4.5, f_Lambda_c^plus = 19.2+-4.2, f_Dplus = 25.3+-4.2, and f_D_splus = 11.8+-4.7.
