First measurement of electron neutrino appearance in NOvA

We report results from the first search for νμ→νeν_μ\toν_e transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10202.74\times10^{20} protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.110.99\pm0.11 (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.141.07\pm0.14 (syst.). The 3.3σ3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δCP<0.5π0.1π< δ_{CP} < 0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

First measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in NOvA

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of νμν_μ disappearance in a νμν_μ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of 2.74×10202.74 \times 10^{20} protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure Δm322=(2.52−0.18+0.20)×10−3Δm^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3} eV2^{2} and sin⁡2θ23\sin^2θ_{23} in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically-degenerate best fit points at sin⁡2θ23=\sin^2θ_{23} = 0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

Observation of muon intensity variations by season with the MINOS Near Detector

A sample of 1.53×\times109^{9} cosmic-ray-induced single muon events has been recorded at 225 meters-water-equivalent using the MINOS Near Detector. The underground muon rate is observed to be highly correlated with the effective atmospheric temperature. The coefficient αTα_{T}, relating the change in the muon rate to the change in the vertical effective temperature, is determined to be 0.428±\pm0.003(stat.)±\pm0.059(syst.). An alternative description is provided by the weighted effective temperature, introduced to account for the differences in the temperature profile and muon flux as a function of zenith angle. Using the latter estimation of temperature, the coefficient is determined to be 0.352±\pm0.003(stat.)±\pm0.046(syst.).

Electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance in the full MINOS data sample

We report on νeν_e and νˉe\barν_e appearance in νμν_μ and νˉμ\barν_μ beams using the full MINOS data sample. The comparison of these νeν_e and νˉe\barν_e appearance data at a 735 km baseline with θ13θ_{13} measurements by reactor experiments probes δδ, the θ23θ_{23} octant degeneracy, and the mass hierarchy. This analysis is the first use of this technique and includes the first accelerator long-baseline search for νˉμ→νˉe\barν_μ\rightarrow\barν_e. Our data disfavor 31% (5%) of the three-parameter space defined by δδ, the octant of the θ23θ_{23}, and the mass hierarchy at the 68% (90%) C.L. We measure a value of 2sin2(2θ13)^2(2θ_{13})sin2(θ23)^2(θ_{23}) that is consistent with reactor experiments.

Measurement of Neutrino and Antineutrino Oscillations Using Beam and Atmospheric Data in MINOS

We report measurements of oscillation parameters from νmuν_{mu} and νˉμ\barν_μ disappearance using beam and atmospheric data from MINOS. The data comprise exposures of \unit[10.71×102010.71 \times 10^{20}]{protons on target (POT)} in the νμν_μ-dominated beam, $\unit[3.36\times10^{20}]{POT}}$ in the νˉμ\barν_μ-enhanced beam, and 37.88 kton-years of atmospheric neutrinos. Assuming identical νν and νˉ\barν oscillation parameters, we measure \mbox{$|Δm^2}| = \unit[2.41^{+0.09}_{-0.10}) \times 10^{-3}]{eV^{2}}$} and $\sin^{2}/!/left(2θ\right) = 0.950^{+0.035}_{-0.036}$. Allowing independent νν and νˉ\barν oscillations, we measure antineutrino parameters of $|Δ\bar{m}^2| = \unit[(2.50 ^{+0.23}_{-0.25}) \times 10^{-3}]{eV^{2}}$ and $\sin^{2}/!/left(2\barθ \right) = 0.97^{+0.03}_{-0.08}$, with minimal change to the neutrino parameters.

Operational experience, improvements, and performance of the CDF Run II silicon vertex detector

The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) pursues a broad physics program at Fermilab's Tevatron collider. Between Run II commissioning in early 2001 and the end of operations in September 2011, the Tevatron delivered 12 fb-1 of integrated luminosity of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV. Many physics analyses undertaken by CDF require heavy flavor tagging with large charged particle tracking acceptance. To realize these goals, in 2001 CDF installed eight layers of silicon microstrip detectors around its interaction region. These detectors were designed for 2--5 years of operation, radiation doses up to 2 Mrad (0.02 Gy), and were expected to be replaced in 2004. The sensors were not replaced, and the Tevatron run was extended for several years beyond its design, exposing the sensors and electronics to much higher radiation doses than anticipated. In this paper we describe the operational challenges encountered over the past 10 years of running the CDF silicon detectors, the preventive measures undertaken, and the improvements made along the way to ensure their optimal performance for collecting high quality physics data. In addition, we describe the quantities and methods used to monitor radiation damage in the sensors for optimal performance and summarize the detector performance quantities important to CDF's physics program, including vertex resolution, heavy flavor tagging, and silicon vertex trigger performance.

An improved measurement of muon antineutrino disappearance in MINOS

We report an improved measurement of muon anti-neutrino disappearance over a distance of 735km using the MINOS detectors and the Fermilab Main Injector neutrino beam in a muon anti-neutrino enhanced configuration. From a total exposure of 2.95e20 protons on target, of which 42% have not been previously analyzed, we make the most precise measurement of the anti-neutrino "atmospheric" delta-m squared = 2.62 +0.31/-0.28 (stat.) +/- 0.09 (syst.) and constrain the anti-neutrino atmospheric mixing angle >0.75 (90%CL). These values are in agreement with those measured for muon neutrinos, removing the tension reported previously.

Measurements of atmospheric neutrinos and antineutrinos in the MINOS Far Detector

This paper reports measurements of atmospheric neutrino and antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Far Detector, based on 2553 live-days (37.9 kton-years) of data. A total of 2072 candidate events are observed. These are separated into 905 contained-vertex muons and 466 neutrino-induced rock-muons, both produced by charged-current νμν_μ and νˉμ\barν_μ interactions, and 701 contained-vertex showers, composed mainly of charged-current νeν_{e} and νˉe\barν_{e} interactions and neutral-current interactions. The curvature of muon tracks in the magnetic field of the MINOS Far Detector is used to select separate samples of νμν_μ and νˉμ\barν_μ events. The observed ratio of νˉμ\barν_μ to νμν_μ events is compared with the Monte Carlo simulation, giving a double ratio of Rνˉ/νdata/Rνˉ/νMC=1.03±0.08(stat.)±0.08(syst.)R^{data}_{\barν/ν}/R^{MC}_{\barν/ν} = 1.03 \pm 0.08 (stat.) \pm 0.08 (syst.). The νμν_μ and νˉμ\barν_μ data are separated into bins of L/EL/E resolution, based on the reconstructed energy and direction of each event, and a maximum likelihood fit to the observed L/EL/E distributions is used to determine the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters. This fit returns 90% confidence limits of ∣Δm2∣=(1.9±0.4)×10−3eV2|Δm^{2}| = (1.9 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{-3} eV^{2} and sin22θ>0.86sin^{2} 2θ> 0.86. The fit is extended to incorporate separate νμν_μ and νˉμ\barν_μ oscillation parameters, returning 90% confidence limits of ∣Δm2∣−∣Δmˉ2∣=0.6−0.8+2.4×10−3eV2|Δm^{2}|-|Δ\bar{m}^{2}| = 0.6^{+2.4}_{-0.8} \times 10^{-3} eV^{2} on the difference between the squared-mass splittings for neutrinos and antineutrinos.

Search for Lorentz invariance and CPT violation with muon antineutrinos in the MINOS Near Detector

We have searched for sidereal variations in the rate of antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Near Detector. Using antineutrinos produced by the NuMI beam, we find no statistically significant sidereal modulation in the rate. When this result is placed in the context of the Standard Model Extension theory we are able to place upper limits on the coefficients defining the theory. These limits are used in combination with the results from an earlier analysis of MINOS neutrino data to further constrain the coefficients.

Search for WZ+ZZ production with MET + jets with b enhancement at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

Diboson production (WW+WZ+ZZWW+WZ+ZZ) has been observed at the Tevatron in hadronic decay modes dominated by the WWWW process. This paper describes the measurement of the cross section of WZWZ and ZZZZ events in final states with large $\mett$ and using bb-jet identification as a tool to suppress WWWW contributions. Due to the limited energy resolution, we cannot distinguish between partially hadronic decays of WZWZ and ZZZZ, and we measure the sum of these processes. The number of signal events is extracted using a simultaneous fit to the invariant mass distribution of the two jets for events with two bb-jet candidates and events without two bb-jet candidates. We measure a cross section σ(ppˉ→WZ,ZZ)=5.8−3.0+3.6σ(p\bar{p}\to WZ,ZZ) = 5.8^{+3.6}_{-3.0} pb, in agreement with the standard model.

Improved search for muon-neutrino to electron-neutrino oscillations in MINOS

We report the results of a search for νeν_{e} appearance in a νμν_μ beam in the MINOS long-baseline neutrino experiment. With an improved analysis and an increased exposure of 8.2×10208.2\times10^{20} protons on the NuMI target at Fermilab, we find that 2sin⁡2(θ23)sin⁡2(2θ13)<0.12 (0.20)2\sin^2(θ_{23})\sin^2(2θ_{13})<0.12\ (0.20) at 90% confidence level for δ=0δ\mathord{=}0 and the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy, with a best fit of 2sin⁡2(θ23)sin⁡2(2θ13) = 0.041−0.031+0.047 (0.079−0.053+0.071)2\sin^2(θ_{23})\sin^2(2θ_{13})\,\mathord{=}\,0.041^{+0.047}_{-0.031}\ (0.079^{+0.071}_{-0.053}). The θ13=0θ_{13}\mathord{=}0 hypothesis is disfavored by the MINOS data at the 89% confidence level.

Measurement of the Top Pair Production Cross Section in the Lepton + Jets Channel Using a Jet Flavor Discriminant

We present a new method to measure the top quark pair production cross section and the background rates with 2.7 fb−1^{-1} of data from ppˉp\bar{p} collisions at s=1.96\sqrt{s} =1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II Detector. The size of the dataset was chosen to directly show the improvements of this new method. We select events with a single electron or muon, missing transverse energy, and at least one b-tagged jet. We perform a simultaneous fit to a jet flavor discriminant across nine samples defined by the number of jets and b-tags. We measure a top cross section of σttˉ=7.64±0.57(stat+syst)±0.45(luminosity)σ_{t\bar{t}} = 7.64 \pm 0.57 \mathrm{(stat + syst)} \pm 0.45 \mathrm{(luminosity)} pb. An advantage of this approach is that many systematic uncertainties are measured in situ and inversely scale with integrated luminosity.

Measurement of the top-quark mass in the lepton+jets channel using a matrix element technique with the CDF II detector

A measurement of the top-quark mass is presented using Tevatron data from proton-antiproton collisions at center-of-mass energy s=1.96\sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector. Events are selected from a sample of candidates for production of ttˉt\bar t pairs that decay into the lepton+jets channel. The top-quark mass is measured with an unbinned maximum likelihood method where the event probability density functions are calculated using signal and background matrix elements, as well as a set of parameterized jet-to-parton transfer functions. The likelihood function is maximized with respect to the top-quark mass, the signal fraction in the sample, and a correction to the jet energy scale (JES) calibration of the calorimeter jets. The simultaneous measurement of the JES correction ($\JES$) amounts to an additional \textit{in situ} jet energy calibration based on the known mass of the hadronically decaying WW boson. Using the data sample of 578 lepton+jets candidate events, corresponding to 3.2 fb−1fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, the top-quark mass is measured to be $m_t = \rm 172.4 \pm 1.4\:(stat+\JES) \pm 1.3\:(syst) GeV/{\it c}^2$.

Search for a Heavy Top-Like Quark in p\bar{p} Collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV

We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy top-like (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb-1 collected by the CDF II detector in pp collisions at {\surd}s = 1.96 TeV. We perform parallel searches for t' \to Wb and t' \to Wq (where q is a generic down-type quark) in events containing a lepton and four or more jets. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t quark mass, we set upper limits on the t \bar{t} production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to W b (W q) with mass below 358 (340) GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

Search for New Dielectron Resonances and Randall-Sundrum Gravitons at the Collider Detector at Fermilab

A search for new dielectron mass resonances using data recorded by the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.7/fb is presented. No significant excess over the expected standard model prediction is observed. In this dataset, an event with the highest dielectron mass ever observed (960 GeV/c^2) was recorded. The results are interpreted in the Randall-Sundrum (RS) model. Combined with the 5.4/fb diphoton analysis, the RS-graviton lower mass limit for the coupling k/\bar{M}_{Pl}=0.1 is 1058 GeV/c^2, making it the strongest limit to date.

Search for the disappearance of muon antineutrinos in the NuMI neutrino beam

We report constraints on antineutrino oscillation parameters that were obtained by using the two MINOS detectors to measure the 7% muon antineutrino component of the NuMI neutrino beam. In the Far Detector, we select 130 events in the charged-current muon antineutrino sample, compared to a prediction of 136.4 +/- 11.7(stat) ^{+10.2}_{-8.9}(syst) events under the assumption |dm2bar|=2.32x10^-3 eV^2, snthetabar=1.0. Assuming no oscillations occur at the Near Detector baseline, a fit to the two-flavor oscillation approximation constrains |dm2bar|<3.37x10^-3 eV^2 at the 90% confidence level with snthetabar=1.0.

Studying the Underlying Event in Drell-Yan and High Transverse Momentum Jet Production at the Tevatron

We study the underlying event in proton-antiproton collisions by examining the behavior of charged particles (transverse momentum pT > 0.5 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η| < 1) produced in association with large transverse momentum jets (~2.2 fb-1) or with Drell-Yan lepton-pairs (~2.7 fb-1) in the Z-boson mass region (70 < M(pair) < 110 GeV/c2) as measured by CDF at 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. We use the direction of the lepton-pair (in Drell-Yan production) or the leading jet (in high-pT jet production) in each event to define three regions of η-ϕspace; toward, away, and transverse, where ϕis the azimuthal scattering angle. For Drell-Yan production (excluding the leptons) both the toward and transverse regions are very sensitive to the underlying event. In high-pT jet production the transverse region is very sensitive to the underlying event and is separated into a MAX and MIN transverse region, which helps separate the hard component (initial and final-state radiation) from the beam-beam remnant and multiple parton interaction components of the scattering. The data are corrected to the particle level to remove detector effects and are then compared with several QCD Monte-Carlo models. The goal of this analysis is to provide data that can be used to test and improve the QCD Monte-Carlo models of the underlying event that are used to simulate hadron-hadron collisions.
