Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Cosmology with peaks using an emulator approach

We constrain the matter density ΩmΩ_{\mathrm{m}} and the amplitude of density fluctuations σ8σ_8 within the ΛΛCDM cosmological model with shear peak statistics and angular convergence power spectra using mass maps constructed from the first three years of data of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3). We use tomographic shear peak statistics, including cross-peaks: peak counts calculated on maps created by taking a harmonic space product of the convergence of two tomographic redshift bins. Our analysis follows a forward-modelling scheme to create a likelihood of these statistics using N-body simulations, using a Gaussian process emulator. We include the following lensing systematics: multiplicative shear bias, photometric redshift uncertainty, and galaxy intrinsic alignment. Stringent scale cuts are applied to avoid biases from unmodelled baryonic physics. We find that the additional non-Gaussian information leads to a tightening of the constraints on the structure growth parameter yielding S8 ≡ σ8Ωm/0.3 = 0.797−0.013+0.015S_8~\equiv~σ_8\sqrt{Ω_{\mathrm{m}}/0.3}~=~0.797_{-0.013}^{+0.015} (68% confidence limits), with a precision of 1.8%, an improvement of ~38% compared to the angular power spectra only case. The results obtained with the angular power spectra and peak counts are found to be in agreement with each other and no significant difference in S8S_8 is recorded. We find a mild tension of 1.5 σ1.5 \thinspace σ between our study and the results from Planck 2018, with our analysis yielding a lower S8S_8. Furthermore, we observe that the combination of angular power spectra and tomographic peak counts breaks the degeneracy between galaxy intrinsic alignment AIAA_{\mathrm{IA}} and S8S_8, improving cosmological constraints. We run a suite of tests concluding that our results are robust and consistent with the results from other studies using DES Y3 data.

Estimating the index of summability of pairs of Banach spaces

Let E1,...,Em,FE_{1},...,E_{m},F be Banach spaces. The index of summability of (E1×⋯×Em,F)\left(E_{1}\times\cdots\times E_{m},F\right) is a kind of measure of how far the mm-linear operators T:E1×⋯×Em→FT:E_{1}\times\cdots\times E_{m}\rightarrow F are from being multiple summing. In this paper we estimate the index of summability of several pairs of Banach spaces..

Optimal Hardy--Littlewood inequalities uniformly bounded by a universal constant

The Hardy--Littlewood inequality for mm-linear forms on ℓp\ell _{p} spaces and m<p≤2mm<p\leq 2m asserts that \begin{equation*} \left( \sum_{j_{1},...,j_{m}=1}^{\infty }\left\vert T\left( e_{j_{1}},\ldots ,e_{j_{m}}\right) \right\vert ^{\frac{p}{p-m}}\right) ^{\frac{p-m}{p}}\leq 2^{\frac{m-1}{2}}\left\Vert T\right\Vert \end{equation*} for all continuous mm-linear forms T:ℓp×⋯×ℓp→RT:\ell _{p}\times \cdots \times \ell _{p}\rightarrow \mathbb{R} or C.\mathbb{C}. The case m=2m=2 recovers a classical inequality proved by Hardy and Littlewood in 1934. As a consequence of the results of the present paper we show that the same inequality is valid with 2m−122^{\frac{m-1}{2}} replaced by 2(m−1)(p−m)p2^{\frac{\left( m-1\right) \left( p-m\right) }{p}}. In particular, for m<p≤m+1m<p\leq m+1 the optimal constants of the above inequality are uniformly bounded by 2.2.

The clustering of massive galaxies at z~0.5 from the first semester of BOSS data

We calculate the real- and redshift-space clustering of massive galaxies at z~0.5 using the first semester of data by the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). We study the correlation functions of a sample of 44,000 massive galaxies in the redshift range 0.4<z<0.7. We present a halo-occupation distribution modeling of the clustering results and discuss the implications for the manner in which massive galaxies at z~0.5 occupy dark matter halos. The majority of our galaxies are central galaxies living in halos of mass 10^{13}Msun/h, but 10% are satellites living in halos 10 times more massive. These results are broadly in agreement with earlier investigations of massive galaxies at z~0.5. The inferred large-scale bias (b~2) and relatively high number density (nbar=3e-4 h^3 Mpc^{-3}) imply that BOSS galaxies are excellent tracers of large-scale structure, suggesting BOSS will enable a wide range of investigations on the distance scale, the growth of large-scale structure, massive galaxy evolution and other topics.
