Stabilizing entanglement via symmetry-selective bath engineering in superconducting qubits

Bath engineering, which utilizes coupling to lossy modes in a quantum system to generate non-trivial steady states, is a tantalizing alternative to gate- and measurement-based quantum science. Here, we demonstrate dissipative stabilization of entanglement between two superconducting transmon qubits in a symmetry-selective manner. We utilize the engineered symmetries of the dissipative environment to stabilize a target Bell state; we further demonstrate suppression of the Bell state of opposite symmetry due to parity selection rules. This implementation is resource-efficient, achieves a steady-state fidelity $\mathcal{F} = 0.70$, and is scalable to multiple qubits.

Quasiparticle scattering from vortices in d-wave superconductors I: Superflow contribution

In the vortex state of a d-wave superconductor, massless Dirac quasiparticles are scattered from magnetic vortices via a combination of two basic mechanisms: effective potential scattering due to the superflow swirling about the vortices and Aharonov-Bohm scattering due to the Berry phase acquired by a quasiparticle upon circling a vortex. In this paper, we study the superflow contribution by calculating the differential cross section for a quasiparticle scattering from the effective non-central potential of a single vortex. We solve the massless Dirac equation in polar coordinates and obtain the cross section via a partial wave analysis. We also present a more transparent Born-limit calculation and in this approximation we provide an analytic expression for the differential cross section. The Berry phase contribution to the quasiparticle scattering is considered in a separate paper.

Quasiparticle scattering from vortices in d-wave superconductors. II. Berry phase contribution

In the mixed state of a d-wave superconductor, Bogoliubov quasiparticles are scattered from magnetic vortices via a combination of two effects: Aharonov-Bohm scattering due to the Berry phase acquired by a quasiparticle upon circling a vortex, and effective potential scattering due to the superflow swirling about the vortices. In this paper, we consider the Berry phase contribution in the absence of superflow, which results in branch cuts between neighboring vortices across which the quasiparticle wave function changes sign. Here, the simplest problem that captures the physics is that of scattering from a single finite branch cut that stretches between two vortices. Elliptical coordinates are natural for this two-center problem, and we proceed by separating the massless Dirac equation in elliptical coordinates. The separated equations take the form of the Whittaker-Hill equations, which we solve to obtain radial and angular eigenfunctions. With these eigenfunctions in hand, we construct the scattering cross section via partial wave analysis. We discuss the scattering effect of Berry phase in the absence of superflow, having considered the superflow effect in the absence of Berry phase in a separate paper. We also provide qualitative comparison of transport cross sections for the Berry phase and the Superflow effects. The important issue of interference between the two effects is left to future work.

Cold Fermi-gas with long range interaction in a harmonic trap

We study equilibrium density and spin density profiles for a model of cold one-dimensional spin 1/2 fermions interacting via inverse square interaction and exchange in an external harmonic trap. This model is the well-known spin-Calogero model (sCM) and its fully nonlinear collective field theory description is known. We extend the field theory description to the presence of an external harmonic trap and obtain analytic results for statics and dynamics of the system. For instance, we find how the equilibrium density profile changes upon tuning the interaction strength. The results we obtain for equilibrium configurations are very similar to the ones obtained recently by Ma and Yang [1] for a model of fermions with short ranged interactions. Our main approximation is the neglect of the terms of higher order in spatial derivatives in equations of motion - gradientless approximation [2]. Within this approximation the hydrodynamic equations of motion can be written as a set of decoupled forced Riemann-Hopf equations for the dressed Fermi momenta of the model. This enables us to write analytical solutions for the dynamics of spin and charge. We describe the time evolution of the charge density when an initial non-equilibrium profile is created by cooling the gas with an additional potential in place and then suddenly removing the potential. We present our results as a simple "single-particle" evolution in the phase-space reminiscing a similar description of the dynamics of non-interacting one-dimensional fermions.

The RKKY Interaction and the Nature of the Ground State of Double Dots in Parallel

We argue through a combination of slave boson mean field theory and the Bethe ansatz that the ground state of closely spaced double quantum dots in parallel coupled to a single effective channel are Fermi liquids. We do so by studying the dots' conductance, impurity entropy, and spin correlation. In particularly we find that the zero temperature conductance is characterized by the Friedel sum rule, a hallmark of Fermi liquid physics, and that the impurity entropy vanishes in the limit of zero temperature, indicating the ground state is a singlet. This conclusion is in opposition to a number of numerical renormalization group studies. We suggest a possible reason for the discrepancy.

Emptiness and Depletion Formation Probability in spin models with inverse square interaction

We calculate the Emptiness Formation Probability (EFP) in the spin-Calogero Model (sCM) and Haldane-Shastry Model (HSM) using their hydrodynamic description. The EFP is the probability that a region of space is completely void of particles in the ground state of a quantum many body system. We calculate this probability in an instanton approach, by considering the more general problem of an arbitrary depletion of particles (DFP). In the limit of large size of depletion region the probability is dominated by a classical configuration in imaginary time that satisfies a set of boundary conditions and the action calculated on such solution gives the EFP/DFP with exponential accuracy. We show that the calculation for sCM can be elegantly performed by representing the gradientless hydrodynamics of spin particles as a sum of two spin-less Calogero collective field theories in auxiliary variables. Interestingly, the result we find for the EFP can be casted in a form reminiscing of spin-charge separation, which should be violated for a non-linear effect such as this. We also highlight the connections between sCM, HSM and $λ=2$ spin-less Calogero model from a EFP/DFP perspective.
