Competing magnetic phases in the frustrated spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$ probed by NMR

In frustrated spin-1/2 chains the competition between the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions leads to a rich phase diagram that becomes even richer in the presence of perturbations in their material realizations. These effects are still largely unexplored, so that new insight into static and dynamic magnetism, in particular by sensitive local probes, is highly desired. Here we present a comprehensive $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance study of $β$-TeVO$_4$, where the anisotropy of the main exchange interactions and additional weak interchain exchange interactions complement the theoretical phase diagram. Our results confirm the dynamical nature of the intriguing spin-stripe phase that has been reported in previous studies. In addition, we find that the magnetic order in the high-field phase, which develops just below the magnetization saturation, is consistent with an unusual type of spin-density-wave (SDW) order with different alignments of the magnetic moments on the neighboring chains. This is reminiscent of the ordering in the SDW phase, realized in the absence of the magnetic field, and is thus most likely stabilized by magnetic anisotropy.

Origin of Magnetic Ordering in a Structurally-Perfect Quantum Kagome Antiferromagnet

The ground state of the simple Heisenberg nearest-neighbor quantum kagome antiferromagnetic model is a magnetically disordered spin liquid, yet various perturbations may lead to fundamentally different states. Here we disclose the origin of magnetic ordering in the structurally-perfect kagome material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, which is free of the widespread impurity problem. {\it Ab-initio} calculations and modeling of its magnetic susceptibility reveal that, similar to the archetypal case of herbertsmithite, the nearest-neighbor exchange is by far the dominant isotropic interaction. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magnetic anisotropy deduced from electron spin resonance and specific-heat measurements is, however, significantly larger than in herbertsmithite. By enhancing spin correlations within kagome planes, this anisotropy is essential for magnetic ordering. Our study isolates the effect of DM anisotropy from other perturbations and unambiguously confirms the theoretical phase diagram.

Superconductivity in the regime of attractive interactions in the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid

While the vast majority of known physical realizations of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) have repulsive interactions defined with the dimensionless interaction parameter $K_{\rm c}<1$, we here report that Rb$_2$Mo$_3$As$_3$ is in the opposite TLL regime of attractive interactions. This is concluded from a TLL-characteristic power-law temperature dependence of the $^{87}$Rb spin-lattice relaxation rates over broad temperature range yielding the TLL interaction parameter for charge collective modes $K_{\rm c}=1.4$. The TLL of the one-dimensional band can be traced almost down to $T_{\rm c} = 10.4 $~K, where the bulk superconducting state is stabilized by the presence of a three-dimensional band and characterized by the $^{87}$Rb temperature independent Knight shift and the absence of Hebel-Slichter coherence peak in the relaxation rates. The small superconducting gap measured in high magnetic fields reflects either the importance of the vortex core relaxation or the uniqueness of the superconducting state stemming from the attractive interactions defining the precursor TLL.

Thermal effects versus spin nematicity in a frustrated spin-1/2 chain

The spin-nematic phase is an intriguing state of matter that lacks usual long-range dipolar order, yet it exhibits higher multipolar order. This makes its detection extremely difficult and controversial. Recently, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been proposed as one of the most suitable techniques to confirm its existence. We report a $^{17}$O NMR observation of the reduction of the local magnetization in the polarized state of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain $β$-TeVO$_4$, which was previously proposed to be a fingerprint of the spin-nematic behavior. However, our detailed study shows that the detected missing fraction of the magnetization, probed by NMR frequency shift, is thermally activated, thus undermining the presence of the spin-nematic phase in the investigated compound. This highlights the importance of careful considerations of temperature-dependent NMR shift that has been overlooked in previous studies of spin nematicity.

Dichotomy between Attractive and Repulsive Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquids in Spin Ladders

We present two methods to determine whether the interactions in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state of a spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder are attractive or repulsive. The first method combines two bulk measurements, of magnetization and specific heat, to deduce the TLL parameter that distinguishes between the attraction and repulsion. The second one is based on a local-probe, NMR measurements of the spin-lattice relaxation. For the strong-leg spin ladder compound $\mathrm{(C_7H_{10}N)_2CuBr_4}$ we find that the isothermal magnetic field dependence of the relaxation rate, $T_1^{-1}(H)$, displays a concave curve between the two critical fields that bound the TLL regime. This is in sharp contrast to the convex curve previously reported for a strong-rung ladder $\mathrm{(C_5H_{12}N)_2CuBr_4}$. Within the TLL description, we show that the concavity directly reflects the attractive interactions, while the convexity reflects the repulsive ones.

Field-induced magnetic behavior in quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8: A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

BaCo2V2O8 is a nice example of a quasi-one-dimensional quantum spin system that can be described in terms of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics. This is explored in the present study where the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is thoroughly established up to 12 T using single-crystal neutron diffraction. The transition from the Néel phase to the incommensurate longitudinal spin density wave (LSDW) phase through a first-order transition, as well as the critical exponents associated with the paramagnetic to ordered phase transitions, and the magnetic order both in the Néel and in the LSDW phase are determined, thus providing a stringent test for the theory.

Quantum-critical spin dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets

By means of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, we follow the spin dynamics as a function of the applied magnetic field in two gapped one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets: the anisotropic spin-chain system NiCl2-4SC(NH2)2 and the spin-ladder system (C5H12N)2CuBr4. In both systems, spin excitations are confirmed to evolve from magnons in the gapped state to spinons in the gapples Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid state. In between, 1/T1 exhibits a pronounced, continuous variation, which is shown to scale in accordance with quantum criticality. We extract the critical exponent for 1/T1, compare it to the theory, and show that this behavior is identical in both studied systems, thus demonstrating the universality of quantum critical behavior.

Anisotropy of Magnetic Interactions in the Spin-Ladder Compound (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$

Magnetic excitations in the spin-ladder material (C$_5$H$_{12}$N)$_2$CuBr$_4$ [BPCB] are probed by high-resolution multi-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Our experiments provide a direct evidence for a biaxial anisotropy ($\sim 5\%$ of the dominant exchange interaction), that is in contrast to a fully isotropic spin-ladder model employed for this system previously. It is argued that this anisotropy in BPCB is caused by spin-orbit coupling, which appears to be important for describing magnetic properties of this compound. The zero-field zone-center gap in the excitation spectrum of BPCB, $Δ_0/k_{B}=16.5$ K, is detected directly. Furthermore, an ESR signature of the inter-ladder exchange interactions is obtained. The detailed characterization of the anisotropy in BPCB completes the determination of the full spin hamiltonian of this exceptional spin-ladder material and shows ways to study anisotropy effects in spin ladders.
