Singlet-triplet excitations and long range entanglement in the spin-orbital liquid candidate FeSc2S4

Theoretical models of the spin-orbital liquid (SOL) FeSc$_2$S$_4$ have predicted it to be in close proximity to a quantum critical point separating a spin-orbital liquid phase from a long-range ordered magnetic phase. Here, we examine the magnetic excitations of FeSc$_2$S$_4$ through time-domain terahertz spectroscopy under an applied magnetic field. At low temperatures an excitation emerges that we attribute to a singlet-triplet excitation from the SOL ground state. A three-fold splitting of this excitation is observed as a function of applied magnetic field. As singlet-triplet excitations are forbidden in inversion symmetric pure spin systems, our results demonstrate the non-trivial character of the entangled spin-orbital singlet ground state. Using experimentally obtained parameters we compare to existing theoretical models to determine FeSc$_2$S$_4$'s proximity to the quantum critical point. In the context of these models, we estimate that the characteristic length of the singlet correlations to be $ξ/ (\textbf{a}/2) \approx 8.2$ (where $\textbf{a}/2$ is the nearest neighbor lattice constant) which establishes FeSc$_2$S$_4$ as a SOL with long-range entanglement.

Magnetization and specific heat of the dimer system CuTe2O5

We report on magnetization and specific heat measurements on single-crystalline CuTe2O5. The experimental data are directly compared to theoretical results for two different spin structures, namely an alternating spin-chain and a two-dimensional (2D) coupled dimer model, obtained by Das et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 224437 (2008)]. While the analysis of the specific heat does not allow to distinguish between the two models, the magnetization data is in good agreement with the 2D coupled dimer model.

Crystal Structure and Magnetic Properties of a new two-dimensional S=1 quantum spin system Ni_5(TeO_3)_4X_2 (X= Cl, Br)

Two new transition-metal tellurium oxy-chlorides of the general formula Ni_5(TeO_3)_4X_2 (X=Cl, Br) have been isolated during the investigation of the ternary phase diagram NiO-NiCl2-TeO2. They crystallize in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c, and for the case of Ni_5(TeO_3)_4Cl_2 the unit cell is a=19.5674(2) A, b=5.2457(1) A, c=16.3084(1) A, with beta=125.289(1). The structure is layered and built up of corner connected [Ni_5O_17X_2] entities, made of five nickel(II) octahedra associated by edge and face sharing. The tellurium(IV) atoms are fixed upon the nickel layers. Their lone pairs E and the halogen atoms are packed in a double layer perpendicular to the [010] direction. From the magnetic point of view, this system provides a new 2D S=1 quantum spin system with antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction. The magnetic susceptibility shows anomalies pointing to magnetic ordering phenomena. The observed transition temperatures vary with the interlayer separation.
