A modern reconstruction of Carrington's observations (1853-1861)

The focus of this article is a re-count of Richard Carrington's original sunspot observations from his book drawings (Carrington,1863) by an observer from the World data Center-SILSO network, Thomas H. Teague(UK). This modern recount will enable the use of Carrington's observations in the re-computation of the entire Sunspot Number series in a way Carrington's original counts (Casas and Vaquero,2014) did not. here we present comparison studies of the new recounted series with contemporary observations, new data extracted from the Journals of the Zurich Observatory and other sources of Carrington's own observations and conclude that Carrington's group counting is very close to the modern way of counting while his method for counting individual spots lags significantly behind modern counts. We also test the quality and robustness of the new re-count with methods developed in Mathieu et al.,2019.

Charge transfer energy in iridates: a hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study

We have investigated the electronic structure of iridates in the double perovskite crystal structure containing either Ir$^{4+}$ or Ir$^{5+}$ using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental valence band spectra can be well reproduced using tight binding calculations including only the Ir $5d$, O $2p$ and O $2s$ orbitals with parameters based on the downfolding of the density-functional band structure results. We found that regardless of the A and B cations, the A$_2$BIrO$_6$ iridates have essentially zero O $2p$ to Ir $5d$ charge transfer energies. Hence, double perovskite iridates turn out to be extremely covalent systems with the consequence being that the magnetic exchange interactions become very long-ranged, thereby hampering the materialization of the long-sought Kitaev physics. Nevertheless, it still would be possible to realize a spin-liquid system using the iridates with a proper tuning of the various competing exchange interactions.

Spin-dimer ground state driven by consecutive charge and orbital ordering transitions in the anionic mixed-valence compound Rb$_4$O$_6$

Recently, a Verwey-type transition in the mixed-valence alkali sesquioxide Cs$_4$O$_6$ was deduced from the charge ordering of molecular peroxide O$_2^{2-}$ and superoxide O$_2^-$ anions accompanied by the structural transformation and a dramatic change in electronic conductivity [Adler et al, Sci. Adv 4, eaap7581 (2018)]. Here, we report that in the sister compound Rb$_4$O$_6$ a similar Verwey-type charge ordering transition is strongly linked to O$_2^-$ orbital and spin dynamics. On cooling, a powder neutron diffraction experiment reveals a charge ordering and a cubic-to-tetragonal transition at $T_{\rm CO}=290$ K, which is followed by a further structural instability at $T_{\rm s}=92$ K that involves an additional reorientation of magnetic O$_2^-$ anions. Magnetic resonance techniques supported by density functional theory computations suggest the emergence of a peculiar type of $π^*$-orbital ordering of the magnetically active O$_2^-$ units, which promotes the formation of a quantum spin state composed of weakly coupled spin dimers. These results reveal that similarly as in 3$d$ transition metal compounds, also in in the $π^*$ open-shell alkali sesquioxides the interplay between Jahn-Teller-like electron-lattice coupling and Kugel-Khomskii-type superexchange determines the nature of orbital ordering and the magnetic ground state.

Muon-spin relaxation study of the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$)

We present the results of zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements made on the double perovskite insulators Sr$_{2}B$OsO$_6$ ($B={\rm Fe, Y, In}$). Spontaneous muon-spin precession indicative of quasistatic long range magnetic ordering is observed in Sr$_{2}$FeOsO$_6$ within the AF1 antiferromagnetic phase for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=135 \pm 2~{\rm K}$. Upon cooling below $T_2 \approx 67~{\rm K}$ the oscillations cease to be resolvable owing to the coexistence of the AF1 and AF2 phases, which leads to a broader range of internal magnetic fields. Using density functional calculations we identify a candidate muon stopping site within the unit cell, which dipole field simulations show to be consistent with the proposed magnetic structure. The possibility of incommensurate magnetic ordering is discussed for temperatures below $T_{\rm N}=53~{\rm K}$ and 25~K for Sr$_{2}$YOsO$_6$ and Sr$_{2}$InOsO$_6$, respectively.

Finite volume corrections to the binding energy of the X(3872)

The quark mass dependence of hadrons is an important input for lattice calculations. We investigate the light quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the X(3872) in a finite box to next-to-leading order in an effective field theory for the X(3872) with perturbative pions (XEFT). At this order, the quark mass dependence is determined by a quark mass-dependent contact interaction in addition to the one-pion exchange. While there is only a moderate sensitivity to the light quark masses in the region up to twice their physical value, the finite volume effects are significant already at box length as large as 20 fm.

One-dimensional quantum antiferromagnetism in the $p-$orbital CsO$_2$ compound revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance

Recently it was proposed that the orbital ordering of $π_{x,y}^*$ molecular orbitals in the superoxide CsO$_2$ compound leads to the formation of spin-1/2 chains below the structural phase transition occuring at $T_{\rm{s1}}=61$~K on cooling. Here we report a detailed X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of this phase in CsO$_2$ powder. The EPR signal appears as a broad line below $T_{\rm{s1}}$, which is replaced by the antiferromagnetic resonance below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}=8.3$~K. The temperature dependence of the EPR linewidth between $T_{\rm{s1}}$ and $T_{\rm{N}}$ agrees with the predictions for the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain of $S=1/2$ spins in the presence of symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction. Complementary analysis of the EPR lineshape, linewidth and the signal intensity within the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) framework allows for a determination of the TLL exponent $K=0.48$. Present EPR data thus fully comply with the quantum antiferromagnetic state of spin-1/2 chains in the orbitally ordered phase of CsO$_2$, which is, therefore, a unique $p-$orbital system where such a state could be studied.

Cascade of field-induced magnetic transitions in a frustrated antiferromagnetic metal

Frustrated magnets can exhibit many novel forms of order when exposed to high magnetic fields, however, much less is known about materials where frustration occurs in the presence of itinerant electrons. Here we report thermodynamic and transport measurements on micron-sized single crystals of the triangular-lattice metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2, in magnetic fields of up to 90 T and temperatures down to 0.35 K. We observe a cascade of magnetic phase transitions at 13.5 20, 28 and 39T in fields applied along the easy axis, and we combine magnetic torque, specific heat and transport data to construct the field-temperature phase diagram. The results are discussed in the context of a frustrated easy-axis Heisenberg model for the localized moments where intermediate applied magnetic fields are predicted to stabilize a magnetic supersolid phase. Deviations in the measured phase diagram from this model predictions are attributed to the role played by the itinerant electrons.

The magneto-structural relationship in the tetrahedral spin chain oxide CsCoO$_2$

We have investigated the structural and magnetic transitions in CsCoO$_2$ using calorimetric measurements, neutron powder diffraction (NPD), density functional theory (DFT) calculations and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. CsCoO$_2$ exhibits three-dimensional long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at 424~K, resulting in antiferromagnetic alignment of chains of ferromagnetically ordered Co-Co spin dimers. Although there is no change in magnetic structure around a structural transition at $T^{*}=100$~K, the resulting bifurcation of corner-shared Co--O--Co bond angles causes a weakening of the AFM interaction for one set of bonds along the chains. Consequently, the system undergoes a complex freezing out of relaxation processes on cooling.

Light quark mass dependence of the X(3872) in XEFT

The quark mass dependence of hadrons is an important input for lattice calculations. We investigate the light quark mass dependence of the binding energy of the X(3872) and the Dbar0-D*0 scattering length in the C=+1 channel to next-to-leading order in XEFT where pion interactions are perturbative. At this order, the quark mass dependence is determined by a quark mass-dependent contact interaction in addition to the one-pion exchange. Using naturalness arguments to constrain unknown parameters, we find a moderate sensitivity of the binding energy for quark masses up to twice the physical value while the scattering length is more sensitive. The occurrence of infrared divergences due to on-shell pions in XEFT and their treatment is discussed in detail.

Magnetic transition and spin dynamics in the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet $α$-KCrO$_{2}$

We present the results of muon-spin relaxation measurements on the triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet $α$-KCrO$_{2}$. We observe sharp changes in behaviour at an ordering temperature of $T_{\mathrm{c}}=23$ K, with an additional broad feature in the muon-spin relaxation rate evident at T=13 K, both of which correspond to features in the magnetic contribution to the heat capacity. This behaviour is distinct from both the Li- and Na- containing members of the series. These data may be qualitatively described with the established theoretical predictions for the underlying spin system.

Magnetic properties of PdAs2O6: a dilute spin system with an unusually high Néel temperature

The crystal structure and magnetic ordering pattern of PdAs2O6 were investigated by neutron powder diffraction. While the magnetic structure of PdAs2O6 is identical to the one of its isostructural 3d-homologue NiAs2O6, its Néel temperature (140 K) is much higher than the one of NiAs2O6 (30 K). This is surprising in view of the long distance and indirect exchange path between the magnetic Pd$^{2+}$ ions. Density functional calculations yield insight into the electronic structure and the geometry of the exchange-bond network of both PdAs2O6 and NiAs2O6, and provide a semi-quantitative explanation of the large amplitude difference between their primary exchange interaction parameters.

Spin exchange dominated by charge fluctuations of the Wigner lattice in the newly synthesized chain cuprate Na5Cu3O6

Na5Cu3O6, a new member of one dimensional charge ordered chain cuprates, was synthesized via the azide/nitrate route by reacting NaN3, NaNO3 and CuO. According to single crystal X-ray analysis, one dimensional CuO2 chains built up from planar, edge-sharing CuO4 squares are a dominant feature of the crystal structure. From the analysis of the Cu-O bond lengths we find that the system forms a Wigner lattice. The commensurate charge order allows to explicitly assign the valence states of either +2 or +3 to each copper atom resulting in a repetition according to Cu(2+)-Cu(3+)-Cu(2+)-Cu(2+)-Cu(3+)-Cu(2+). Following the theoretical analysis of the previously synthesized compounds Na3Cu2O4 and Na8Cu5O10, the magnetic susceptibility was expected to show a large dimer gap. Surprisingly, this is not the case. To resolve this puzzle, we show that the magnetic couplings in this compound are strongly affected by excitations across the Wigner charge gap. By including these contributions, which are distinct from conventional superexchange in Mott-insulators, we obtain a quantitative satisfying theoretical description of the magnetic susceptibility data.

Ab initio energy landscape of LiF clusters

A global search for possible LiF cluster structures is performed, up to (LiF)8. The method is based on simulated annealing, where all the energies are evaluated on the ab initio level. In addition, the threshold algorithm is employed to determine the energy barriers for the transitions among these structures, for the cluster (LiF)4, again on the ab initio level; and the corresponding tree graph is obtained.

Direct observation of charge order in triangular metallic AgNiO2 by single-crystal resonant X-ray scattering

We report resonant X-ray scattering measurements on the orbitally-degenerate triangular metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2 to probe the spontaneous transition to a triple-cell superstructure at temperatures below 365 K. We observe a strong resonant enhancement of the supercell reflections through the Ni K-edge. The empirically extracted K-edge shift between the crystallographically-distinct Ni sites of 2.5(3) eV is much larger than the value expected from the shift in final states, and implies a core-level shift of ~1 eV, thus providing direct evidence for the onset of spontaneous honeycomb charge order in the triangular Ni layers. We also provide band-structure calculations that explain quantitatively the observed edge shifts in terms of changes in the Ni electronic energy levels due to charge order and hybridization with the surrounding oxygens.

Magnetic structure of the edge-sharing copper oxide chain compound NaCu2O2

Single-crystal neutron diffraction has been used to determine the incommensurate magnetic structure of NaCu2O2, a compound built up of chains of edge-sharing CuO4 plaquettes. Magnetic structures compatible with the lattice symmetry were identified by a group-theoretical analysis, and their magnetic structure factors were compared to the experimentally observed Bragg intensities. In conjunction with other experimental data, this analysis yields an elliptical helix structure in which both the helicity and the polarization plane alternate among copper-oxide chains. This magnetic ground state is discussed in the context of the recently reported multiferroic properties of other copper-oxide chain compounds.

Structural stability of Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si studied by high-pressure x-ray diffraction and ab initio total-energy calculations

We performed high-pressure angle dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si up to 75 GPa. Both materials were synthesized in bulk quantities via a solid-state reaction. In the pressure range covered by the experiments, no evidence of the occurrence of phase transitions was observed. On top of that, Fe5Si3 was found to compress isotropically, whereas an anisotropic compression was observed in Ni2Si. The linear incompressibility of Ni2Si along the c-axis is similar in magnitude to the linear incompressibility of diamond. This fact is related to the higher valence-electron charge density of Ni2Si along the c-axis. The observed anisotropic compression of Ni2Si is also related to the layered structure of Ni2Si where hexagonal layers of Ni2+ cations alternate with graphite-like layers formed by (NiSi)2- entities. The experimental results are supported by ab initio total-energy calculations carried out using density functional theory and the pseudopotential method. For Fe5Si3, the calculations also predicted a phase transition at 283 GPa from the hexagonal P63/mcm phase to the cubic structure adopted by Fe and Si in the garnet Fe5Si3O12. The room-temperature equations of state for Fe5Si3 and Ni2Si are also reported and a possible correlation between the bulk modulus of iron silicides and the coordination number of their minority element is discussed. Finally, we report novel descriptions of these structures, in particular of the predicted high-pressure phase of Fe5Si3 (the cation subarray in the garnet Fe5Si3O12), which can be derived from spinel Fe2SiO4 (Fe6Si3O12).

Helicoidal magnetic order in a clean copper oxide spin chain compound

We report susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements on NaCu$_2$O$_2$, a spin-1/2 chain compound isostructural to LiCu$_2$O$_2$, which has been extensively investigated. Below 13 K, we find a long-range ordered, incommensurate magnetic helix state with a propagation vector similar to that of LiCu$_2$O$_2$. In contrast to the Li analogue, substitutional disorder is negligible in NaCu$_2$O$_2$. We can thus rule out that the helix is induced by impurities, as was claimed on the basis of prior work on LiCu$_2$O$_2$. A spin Hamiltonian with frustrated longer-range exchange interactions provides a good description of both the ordered state and the paramagnetic susceptibility.
