Experimental elucidation of the origin of the `double spin resonances' in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We report a combined study of the spin resonances and superconducting gaps for underdoped ($T_c=19$ K), optimally doped ($T_c=25$ K), and overdoped ($T_c=19$ K) Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals with inelastic neutron scattering and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find a quasi two dimensional spin resonance whose energy scales with the superconducting gap in all three compounds. In addition, anisotropic low energy spin excitation enhancements in the superconducting state have been deduced and characterized for the under and optimally doped compounds. Our data suggest that the quasi two dimensional spin resonance is a spin exciton that corresponds to the spin singlet-triplet excitations of the itinerant electrons. However, the intensity enhancements of the anisotropic spin excitations are dominated by the out-of-plane spin excitations of the ordered moments due to the suppression of damping in the superconducting state. Hence we offer a new interpretation of the double energy scales differing from previous interpretations based on anisotropic superconducting energy gaps, and systematically explain the doping-dependent trend across the phase diagram.

Measurements of the mean diffuse galactic light spectrum in the 0.95 μm to 1.65 μm band from CIBER

We report measurements of the Diffuse Galactic Light (DGL) spectrum in the near-infrared, spanning the wavelength range 0.95-1.65 μm by the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER). Using the low-resolution spectrometer (LRS) calibrated for absolute spectro-photometry, we acquired long-slit spectral images of the total diffuse sky brightness towards four high-latitude fields spread over four sounding rocket flights. To separate the DGL spectrum from the total sky brightness, we correlated the spectral images with a 100 μm intensity map, which traces the dust column density in optically thin regions. The measured DGL spectrum shows no resolved features and is consistent with other DGL measurements in the optical and at near-infrared wavelengths longer than 1.8 μm. Our result implies that the continuum is consistently reproduced by models of scattered starlight in the Rayleigh scattering regime with a few large grains.

Reanalysis of near-infrared extragalactic background light based on the IRTS observation

We reanalyze data of near-infrared background taken by Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS) based on up-to-date observational results of zodiacal light, integrated star light and diffuse Galactic light. We confirm the existence of residual isotropic emission, which is slightly lower but almost the same as previously reported. At wavelengths longer than 2 μm, the result is fairly consistent with the recent observation with AKARI. We also perform the same analysis using a different zodiacal light model by Wright and detected residual isotropic emission that is slightly lower than that based on the original Kelsall model. Both models show the residual isotropic emission that is significantly brighter than the integrated light of galaxies.

Spin dynamics near a putative antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Cu substituted BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and its relation to high-temperature superconductivity

We present the results of elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on non-superconducting Ba(Fe${_{0.957}}$Cu${_{0.043}}$)${_2}$As${_2}$, a composition close to a quantum critical point between AFM ordered and paramagnetic phases. By comparing these results with the spin fluctuations in the low Cu composition as well as the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds, we demonstrate that paramagnon-like spin fluctuations are evident in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of Ba(Fe$_{0.957}$Cu$_{0.043}$)$_2$As$_2$, which is distinct from the AFM-like spin fluctuations in the superconducting compounds. Our observations suggest that Cu substitution decouples the interaction between quasiparticles and the spin fluctuations. We also show that the spin-spin correlation length, ${ξ(T)}$, increases rapidly as the temperature is lowered and find ${ω/T}$ scaling behavior, the hallmark of quantum criticality, at an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point.

Structural and antiferromagnetic properties of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_x$Rh$_y$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds

We present a systematic investigation of the electrical, structural, and antiferromagnetic properties for the series of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds with fixed $x \approx$ 0.027 and $ 0 \leq y \leq 0.035$. We compare our results for the Co-Rh doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds with the Co doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds. We demonstrate that the electrical, structural, antiferromangetic, and superconducting properties of the Co-Rh doped compounds are similar to the properties of the Co doped compounds. We find that the overall behaviors of Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds are very similar when the total number of extra electrons per Fe/$TM$ ($TM$ = transition metal) site is considered, which is consistent with the rigid band model. Despite the similarity, we find that the details of the transitions, for example, the temperature difference between the structural and antiferromagnetic transition temperatures and the incommensurability of the antiferromangetic peaks, are different between Ba(Fe$_{1-x-y}$Co$_{x}$Rh$_{y}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds.

Anisotropic transport and magnetic properties, and magnetic-field tuned states of CeZn11 single crystals

We present detailed temperature and field dependent data obtained from magnetization, resistivity, heat capacity, Hall resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements performed on single crystals of CeZn11. The compounds orders antiferromagnetically at $\sim$ 2 K. The zero-field resistivity and TEP data show features characteristic of a Ce-based intermetallic with crystal electric field splitting and possible correlated, Kondo lattice effects. We constructed the T-H phase diagram for the magnetic field applied along the easy, [110], direction which shows that the magnetic field required to suppress T_N below 0.4 K is in the range of 45-47.5 kOe. A linear behavior of the rho(T) data, H||[110], was observed only for H=45 kOe for 0.46 K<T<1.96 K followed by the Landau-Fermi-liquid regime for a limited range of fields, 47.5 kOe< H<60 kOe. From the analysis of our data, it appears that CeZn11 is a weakly to moderately correlated local moment compound with rather small Kondo temperature. The thermoelectric and transport properties of CeZn11 are mostly governed by the CEF effects. Given the very high quality of our single crystals, quantum oscillations are found for both CeZn11 and its non-magnetic analogue, LaZn11.

Crystal and Magnetic Structure of CaCo{1.86}As2 Studied by X-ray and Neutron Diffraction

Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements are presented for powders and single crystals of CaCo{1.86}As2. The crystal structure is a collapsed-tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure as previously reported, but with 7(1)% vacancies on the Co sites corresponding to the composition CaCo{1.86(2)}As2. The thermal expansion coefficients for both the a- and c-axes are positive from 10 to 300 K. Neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals demonstrate the onset of A-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below the Neel temperature TN = 52(1) K with the ordered moments directed along the tetragonal c-axis, aligned ferromagnetically in the ab-plane and antiferromagnetically stacked along the c-axis.

Crystallographic, Electronic, Thermal and Magnetic Properties of Single-Crystal SrCo2As2

In tetragonal SrCo2As2 single crystals, inelastic neutron scattering measurements demonstrated that strong stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations occur at a temperature T = 5 K [W. Jayasekara et al., arXiv:1306.5174] that are the same as in the isostructural AFe2As2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) parent compounds of high-Tc superconductors. This surprising discovery suggests that SrCo2As2 may also be a good parent compound for high-Tc superconductivity. Here, structural and thermal expansion, electrical resistivity rho, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), heat capacity Cp, magnetic susceptibility chi, 75As NMR and neutron diffraction measurements of SrCo2As2 crystals are reported together with LDA band structure calculations that shed further light on this fascinating material. The c-axis thermal expansion coefficient alpha_c is negative from 7 to 300 K, whereas alpha_a is positive over this T range. The rho(T) shows metallic character. The ARPES measurements and band theory confirm the metallic character and in addition show the presence of a flat band near the Fermi energy E_F. The band calculations exhibit an extremely sharp peak in the density of states D(E_F) arising from a flat d_{x^2 - y^2} band. A comparison of the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat with chi(T = 0) suggests the presence of strong ferromagnetic itinerant spin correlations which on the basis of the Stoner criterion predicts that SrCo2As2 should be an itinerant ferromagnet, in conflict with the magnetization data. The chi(T) does have a large magnitude, but also exhibits a broad maximum at 115 K suggestive of dynamic short-range AFM spin correlations, in agreement with the neutron scattering data. The measurements show no evidence for any type of phase transition between 1.3 and 300 K and we propose that metallic SrCo2As2 has a gapless quantum spin-liquid ground state.

Magnonlike dispersion of spin resonance in Ni-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba(Fe$_{0.963}$Ni$_{0.037}$)$_2$As$_2$ manifest a neutron spin resonance in the superconducting state with anisotropic dispersion within the Fe layer. Whereas the resonance is sharply peaked at Q$_{AFM}$ along the orthorhombic a axis, the resonance disperses upwards away from Q$_{AFM}$ along the b axis. In contrast to the downward dispersing resonance and hour-glass shape of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates, the resonance in electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds possesses a magnon-like upwards dispersion.

Spin polarization of Ru in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{0.795}$Ru$_{0.205}$)$_2$As$_2$ studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

We have employed the x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) technique at the Ru $L_2$ edge of the Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x = 0.205$) superconductor. We show that pronounced resonance enhancements at the Ru $L_2$ edge are observed at the wave vector which is consistent with the antiferromagnetic propagation vector of the Fe in the undoped BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We also demonstrate that the XRMS signals at the Ru $L_2$ edge follow the magnetic ordering of the Fe with a long correlation length, $ξ_{ab} > 2850\pm400$ Å. Our experimental observation shows that the Ru is spin-polarized in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ru$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ compounds.

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER): the Narrow Band Spectrometer

We have developed a near-infrared spectrometer designed to measure the absolute intensity of the Solar 854.2 nm CaII Fraunhofer line, scattered by interplanetary dust, in the Zodiacal light spectrum. Based on the known equivalent line width in the Solar spectrum, this measurement can derive the Zodiacal brightness, testing models of the Zodiacal light based on morphology that are used to determine the extragalactic background light in absolute photometry measurements. The spectrometer is based on a simple high-resolution tipped filter placed in front of a compact camera with wide-field refractive optics to provide the large optical throughput and high sensitivity required for rocket-borne observations. We discuss the instrument requirements for an accurate measurement of the absolute Zodiacal light brightness, the measured laboratory characterization, and the instrument performance in flight.

Competition between stripe and checkerboard magnetic instabilities in Mn-doped BaFe2As2

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba(Fe0.925Mn0.075)2As2 manifest spin fluctuations at two different wavevectors in the Fe square lattice, (1/2,0) and (1/2,1/2), corresponding to the expected stripe spin-density wave order and checkerboard antiferromagnetic order, respectively. Below T_N=80 K, long-range stripe magnetic ordering occurs and sharp spin wave excitations appear at (1/2,0) while broad and diffusive spin fluctuations remain at (1/2,1/2) at all temperatures. Low concentrations of Mn dopants nucleate local moment spin fluctuations at (1/2,1/2) that compete with itinerant spin fluctuations at (1/2,0) and may disrupt the development of superconductivity.

Control of magnetic, non-magnetic and superconducting states in annealed Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We have grown single crystal samples of Co substituted CaFe2As2 using an FeAs flux and systematically studied the effects of annealing/quenching temperature on the physical properties of these samples. Whereas the as-grown samples (quenched from 960C) all enter the collapsed tetragonal phase upon cooling, annealing/quenching temperatures between 350C and 800C can be used to tune the system to low temperature antiferromagnetic/orthorhomic or superconducting states as well. The progression of the transition temperature versus annealing/quenching temperature (T-T$_{anneal}$) phase diagrams with increasing Co concentration shows that, by substituting Co, the antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic and the collapsed tetragonal phase lines are separated and bulk superconductivity is revealed. We established a 3D phase diagram with Co concentration and annealing/quenching temperature as two independent control parameters. At ambient pressure, for modest x and T$_{anneal}$ values, the Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 system offers ready access to the salient low temperature states associated with Fe-based superconductors: antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic, superconducting, and non-magnetic/collapsed tetragonal.

Effects of transition metal substitutions on the incommensurability and spin fluctuations in BaFe2As2 by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering

The spin fluctuation spectra from nonsuperconducting Cu-substituted, and superconducting Co-substituted, BaFe2As2 are compared quantitatively by inelastic neutron scattering measurements and are found to be indis- tinguishable. Whereas diffraction studies show the appearance of incommensurate spin-density wave order in Co and Ni substituted samples, the magnetic phase diagram for Cu substitution does not display incommensu- rate order, demonstrating that simple electron counting based on rigid-band concepts is invalid. These results, supported by theoretical calculations, suggest that substitutional impurity effects in the Fe plane play a signifi- cant role in controlling magnetism and the appearance of superconductivity, with Cu distinguished by enhanced impurity scattering and split-band behavior.

Magnetically polarized Ir dopant atoms in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We investigate the magnetic polarization of the Ir $5d$ dopant states in the pnictide superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x=0.027(2)$ using Ir $L_3$ edge x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Despite the fact that doping partially suppresses the antiferromagnetic transition, we find that magnetic order survives around the Ir dopant sites. The Ir states are magnetically polarized with commensurate stripe-like antiferromagnetic order and long correlations lengths, $ξ_{\text{mag}}>$ 2800 and $>$850 Å, in the $ab$-plane and along the c-axis, respectively, driven by their interaction with the Fe spins. This Ir magnetic order persists up to the Néel transition of the majority Fe spins at $T_N=74(2)$ K. At 5 K we find that magnetic order co-exists microscopically with superconductivity in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. The energy dependence of the XRMS through the Ir $L_3$ edge shows a non-Lorentzian lineshape, which we explain in terms of interference between Ir resonant scattering and Fe non-resonant magnetic scattering.

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER): The Wide-Field Imagers

We have developed and characterized an imaging instrument to measure the spatial properties of the diffuse near-infrared extragalactic background light in a search for fluctuations from z > 6 galaxies during the epoch of reionization. The instrument is part of the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER), designed to observe the extragalactic background light above the Earth's atmosphere during a suborbital sounding rocket flight. The imaging instrument incorporates a 2x2 degree field of view, to measure fluctuations over the predicted peak of the spatial power spectrum at 10 arcminutes, and 7"x7" pixels, to remove lower redshift galaxies to a depth sufficient to reduce the low-redshift galaxy clustering foreground below instrumental sensitivity. The imaging instrument employs two cameras with Δλ/ λ~0.5 bandpasses centered at 1.1 and 1.6 microns to spectrally discriminate reionization extragalactic background fluctuations from local foreground fluctuations. CIBER operates at wavelengths where the electromagnetic spectrum of the reionization extragalactic background is thought to peak, and complements fluctuations measurements by AKARI and Spitzer at longer wavelengths. We have characterized the instrument in the laboratory, including measurements of the sensitivity, flat-field response, stray light performance, and noise properties. Several modifications were made to the instrument following a first flight in 2009 February. The instrument performed to specifications in subsequent flights in 2010 July and 2012 March, and the scientific data are now being analyzed.

Character of the structural and magnetic phase transitions in the parent and electron doped BaFe2As2 compounds

We present a combined high-resolution x-ray diffraction and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) study of as-grown BaFe2As2. The structural/magnetic transitions must be described as a two-step process. At T_S = 134.5 K we observe the onset of a second-order structural transition from the high-temperature paramagnetic tetragonal structure to a paramagnetic orthorhombic phase, followed by a discontinuous step in the structural order parameter that is coincident with a first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at T_N = 133.75 K. These data, together with detailed high-resolution x-ray studies of the structural transition in lightly doped Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 and Ba(Fe{1-x}Rh{x})2As2 compounds, show that the structural and AFM transitions do, in fact, occur at slightly different temperatures in the parent BaFe2As2 compound, and evolve towards split secondorder transitions as the doping concentration is increased. We estimate the composition for the tricritical point for Co-doping and employ a mean-field approach to show that our measurements can be explained by the inclusion of an anharmonic term in the elastic free energy and magneto-elastic coupling in the form of an emergent Ising-nematic degree of freedom.

Effect of tensile stress on the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in BaFe2As2

The effect of uniaxial tensile stress and the resultant strain on the structural/magnetic transition in the parent compound of the iron arsenide superconductor, BaFe$_2$As$_2$, is characterized by temperature-dependent electrical resistivity, x-ray diffraction and quantitative polarized light imaging. We show that strain induces a measurable uniaxial structural distortion above the first-order magnetic transition and significantly smears the structural transition. This response is different from that found in another parent compound, SrFe$_2$As$_2$, where the coupled structural and magnetic transitions are strongly first order. This difference in the structural responses explains the in-plain resistivity anisotropy above the transition in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. This conclusion is supported by the Ginzburg-Landau - type phenomenological model for the effect of the uniaxial strain on the resistivity anisotropy.

Incommensurate spin-density wave order in electron-doped BaFe2As2 superconductors

Neutron diffraction studies of Ba(Fe[1-x]Co[x])2As2 reveal that commensurate antiferromagnetic order gives way to incommensurate magnetic order for Co compositions between 0.056 < x < 0.06. The incommensurability has the form of a small transverse splitting (0, +-e, 0) from the nominal commensurate antiferromagnetic propagation vector Q[AFM] = (1, 0, 1) (in orthorhombic notation) where e = 0.02-0.03 and is composition dependent. The results are consistent with the formation of a spin-density wave driven by Fermi surface nesting of electron and hole pockets and confirm the itinerant nature of magnetism in the iron arsenide superconductors.

Magnetic order in GdBiPt studied by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering

Rare earth (R) half-Heusler compounds, RBiPt, exhibit a wide spectrum of novel ground states. Recently, GdBiPt has been proposed as a potential antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFTI). We have employed x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to elucidate the microscopic details of the magnetic structure in GdBiPt below T_N = 8.5 K. Experiments at the Gd L_2 absorption edge show that the Gd moments order in an antiferromagnetic stacking along the cubic diagonal [1 1 1] direction satisfying the requirement for an AFTI, where both time-reversal symmetry and lattice translational symmetry are broken, but their product is conserved.

Stabilization of an ambient pressure, collapsed tetragonal phase in CaFe2As2 and tuning of the orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic transition temperature by over 70 K by control of nano-precipitates

We have found a remarkably large response of the transition temperature of CaFe2As2 single crystals grown out of excess FeAs to annealing / quenching temperature. Whereas crystals that are annealed at 400 C exhibit a first order phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal to a low temperature orthorhombic and antiferromagnetic state near 170 K, crystals that have been quenched from 960 C exhibit a transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature, non-magnetic, collapsed tetragonal phase below 100 K. By use of temperature dependent electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements we have been able to demonstrate that the transition temperature can be reduced in a monotonic fashion by varying the annealing / quenching temperature from 400 to 850 C with the low temperature state remaining antiferromagnetic for transition temperatures larger than 100 K and becoming collapsed tetragonal / non-magnetic for transition temperatures below 90 K. This suppression of the orthorhombic / antiferromagnetic phase transition and its ultimate replacement with the collapsed tetragonal / non-magnetic phase is similar to what has been observed for CaFe2As2 under hydrostatic pressure. Transmission electron microscopy studies indicate that there is a temperature dependent, width of formation of CaFe2As2 with a decreasing amount of excess Fe and As being soluble in the single crystal at lower annealing temperatures. For samples quenched from 960 C there is a fine (of order 10 nm), semi-uniform distribution of precipitate that can be associated with an average strain field whereas for samples annealed at 400 C the excess Fe and As form mesoscopic grains that induce little strain throughout the CaFe2As2 lattice.

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER): A Sounding Rocket Payload to Study the Near Infrared Extragalactic Background Light

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) is a suite of four instruments designed to study the near infrared (IR) background light from above the Earth's atmosphere. The instrument package comprises two imaging telescopes designed to characterize spatial anisotropy in the extragalactic IR background caused by cosmological structure during the epoch of reionization, a low resolution spectrometer to measure the absolute spectrum of the extragalactic IR background, and a narrow band spectrometer optimized to measure the absolute brightness of the Zodiacal light foreground. In this paper we describe the design and characterization of the CIBER payload. The detailed mechanical, cryogenic, and electrical design of the system are presented, including all system components common to the four instruments. We present the methods and equipment used to characterize the instruments before and after flight, and give a detailed description of CIBER's flight profile and configurations. CIBER is designed to be recoverable and has flown twice, with modifications to the payload having been informed by analysis of the first flight data. All four instruments performed to specifications during the second flight, and the scientific data from this flight are currently being analyzed.

The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER): The Low Resolution Spectrometer

Absolute spectrophotometric measurements of diffuse radiation at 1 μm to 2 μm are crucial to our understanding of the radiative content of the Universe from nucleosynthesis since the epoch of reionization, the composition and structure of the Zodiacal dust cloud in our solar system, and the diffuse galactic light arising from starlight scattered by interstellar dust. The Low Resolution Spectrometer (LRS) on the rocket-borne Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment (CIBER) is a λ/ Δλ\sim 15-30 absolute spectrophotometer designed to make precision measurements of the absolute near-infrared sky brightness between 0.75 μm < λ< 2.1 μm. This paper presents the optical, mechanical and electronic design of the LRS, as well as the ground testing, characterization and calibration measurements undertaken before flight to verify its performance. The LRS is shown to work to specifications, achieving the necessary optical and sensitivity performance. We describe our understanding and control of sources of systematic error for absolute photometry of the near-infrared extragalactic background light.

Anomalous suppression of the orthorhombic distortion in superconducting Ba[Fe(1-x)Cox]2As2

High-resolution x-ray diffraction measurements reveal an unusually strong response of the lattice to superconductivity in Ba[Fe(1-x)Cox]2As2. The orthorhombic distortion of the lattice is suppressed and, for Co-doping near x = 0.063, the orthorhombic structure evolves smoothly back to a tetragonal structure. We propose that the coupling between orthorhombicity and superconductivity is indirect and arises due to the magneto-elastic coupling, in the form of emergent nematic order, and the strong competition between magnetism and superconductivity.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in the absence of a structural distortion in Ba(Fe{1-x}Mn{x})2As2

Neutron and x-ray diffraction studies of Ba(Fe{1-x}Mn{x})2As2 for low doping concentrations (x <= 0.176) reveal that at a critical concentration, 0.102 < x < 0.118, the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition abruptly disappears whereas magnetic ordering with a propagation vector of (1/2 1/2 1) persists. Among all of the iron arsenides this observation is unique to Mn-doping, and unexpected because all models for "stripe-like" antiferromagnetic order anticipate an attendant orthorhombic distortion due to magnetoelastic effects. We discuss these observations and their consequences in terms of previous studies of Ba(Fe{1-x}TM{x})2As2 compounds (TM = Transition Metal), and models for magnetic ordering in the iron arsenide compounds.

Commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering in Ba(Fe{1-x}Co{x})2As2 determined by x-ray resonant magnetic scattering at the Fe K-edge

We describe x-ray resonant magnetic diffraction measurements at the Fe K-edge of both the parent BaFe2As2 and superconducting Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2 compounds. From these high-resolution measurements we conclude that the magnetic structure is commensurate for both compositions. The energy spectrum of the resonant scattering is in reasonable agreement with theoretical calculations using the full-potential linear augmented plane wave method with a local density functional.

Interplay between Fe and Nd magnetism in NdFeAsO single crystals

The structural and magnetic phase transitions have been studied on NdFeAsO single crystals by neutron and x-ray diffraction complemented by resistivity and specific heat measurements. Two low-temperature phase transitions have been observed in addition to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at T_S = 142 K and the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) Fe order below T_N = 137 K. The Fe moments order AFM in the well-known stripe-like structure in the (ab) plane, but change from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) arrangement along the c direction below T* = 15 K accompanied by the onset of Nd AFM order below T_Nd = 6 K with this same AFM configuration. The iron magnetic order-order transition in NdFeAsO accentuates the Nd-Fe interaction and the delicate balance of c-axis exchange couplings that results in AFM in LaFeAsO and FM in CeFeAsO and PrFeAsO.

Magnetic ordering and structural distortion in Ru doped BaFe2As2 single crystals studied by Neutron and X-ray diffraction

We present a systematic investigation of the antiferromagnetic ordering and structural distortion for the series of Ba(Fe{1-x}Ru{x})2As2 compounds (0 <= x <= 0.246). Neutron and x-ray diffraction measurements demonstrate that, unlike for the electron-doped compounds, the structural and magnetic transitions remain coincident in temperature. Both the magnetic and structural transitions are gradually suppressed with increased Ru concentration and coexist with superconductivity. For samples that are superconducting, we find strong competition between superconductivity, the antiferromagnetic ordering, and the structural distortion.

Suppression of antiferromagnetic order and orthorhombic distortion in superconducting Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2

Neutron diffraction and high-resolution x-ray diffraction studies find that, similar to the closely related underdoped Ba(Fe[1-x]Cox)2As2 superconducting compounds, Ba(Fe0.961Rh0.039)2As2 shows strong evidence of competition and coexistence between superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order below the superconducting transition, Tc = 14 K. The transition temperatures for both the magnetic order and orthorhombic distortion are in excellent agreement with those inferred from resistivity measurements, and both order parameters manifest a distinct decrease in magnitude below Tc. These data suggest that the strong interaction between magnetism and superconductivity is a general feature of electron-doped Ba(Fe[1-x]TMx)2As2 superconductors (TM = Transition Metal).

Unconventional pairing in the iron arsenide superconductors

We use magnetic long range order as a tool to probe the Cooper pair wave function in the iron arsenide superconductors. We show theoretically that antiferromagnetism and superconductivity can coexist in these materials only if Cooper pairs form an unconventional, sign-changing state. The observation of coexistence in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ then demonstrates unconventional pairing in this material. The detailed agreement between theory and neutron diffraction experiments, in particular for the unusual behavior of the magnetic order below $T_{c}$, demonstrates the robustness of our conclusions. Our findings strongly suggest that superconductivity is unconventional in all members of the iron arsenide family.

Uniaxial strain detwinning of CaFe2As2 and BaFe2As2: optical and transport study

TThe parent compounds of iron-arsenide superconductors, $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba), undergo a tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition at a temperature $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in the range 135 to 205K depending on the alkaline earth element. Below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the free standing crystals split into equally populated structural domains, which mask intrinsic, in-plane, anisotropic properties of the materials. Here we demonstrate a way of mechanically detwinning CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. The detwinning is nearly complete, as demonstrated by polarized light imaging and synchrotron $X$-ray measurements, and reversible, with twin pattern restored after strain release. Electrical resistivity measurements in the twinned and detwinned states show that resistivity, $ρ$, decreases along the orthorhombic $a_{o}$-axis but increases along the orthorhombic $b_{o}$-axis in both compounds. Immediately below $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ the ratio $ρ_{bo}/ ρ_{ao}$ = 1.2 and 1.5 for Ca and Ba compounds, respectively. Contrary to CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ reveals an anisotropy in the nominally tetragonal phase, suggesting that either fluctuations play a larger role above $T_{\mathrm{TO}}$ in BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ than in CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, or that there is a higher temperature crossover or phase transition.

We report the discovery of a new binary icosahedral phase in a Sc-Zn alloy obtained through solution-growth, producing millimeter-sized, facetted, single grain, quasicrystals that exhibit different growth morphologies, pentagonal dodecahedra and rhombic triacontahedra, under only marginally different growth conditions. These two morphologies manifest different degrees of quasicrystalline order, or phason strain. The discovery of i-Sc$_12$Zn$_88$ suggests that a reexamination of binary phase diagrams at compositions close to crystalline approximant structures may reveal other, new binary quasicrystalline phases.
