Evidence for biquadratic exchange in the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet FePS$_3$

FePS$_3$ is a van der Waals compound with a honeycomb lattice that is a good example of a two-dimensional antiferromagnet with Ising-like anisotropy. Neutron spectroscopy data from FePS3 were previously analysed using a straight-forward Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a single-ion anisotropy. The analysis captured most of the elements of the data, however some significant discrepancies remained. The discrepancies were most obvious at the Brillouin zone boundaries. The data are subsequently reanalysed allowing for unequal exchange between nominally equivalent nearest-neighbours, which resolves the discrepancies. The source of the unequal exchange is attributed to a biquadratic exchange term in the Hamiltonian which most probably arises from a strong magnetolattice coupling. The new parameters show that there are features consistent with Dirac magnon nodal lines along certain Brillouin zone boundaries.

Dynamical structure factor of triangular-lattice antiferromagnet

We elucidate the role of magnon interaction and spontaneous decays in the spin dynamics of the triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet by calculating its dynamical structure factor within the spin-wave theory. Explicit theoretical results for neutron-scattering intensity are provided for spins S=1/2 and S=3/2. The dynamical structure factor exhibits unconventional features such as quasiparticle peaks broadened by decays, non-Lorentzian lineshapes, and significant spectral weight redistribution to the two-magnon continuum. This rich excitation spectrum illustrates the complexity of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet and provides distinctive qualitative and quantitative fingerprints for experimental observation of decay-induced magnon dynamics.

Field-induced decays in $XXZ$ triangular-lattice antiferromagnets

We investigate field-induced transformations in the dynamical response of the $XXZ$ model on the triangular lattice that are associated with the anharmonic magnon coupling and decay phenomena. A set of concrete theoretical predictions is made for a close physical realization of the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model, Ba$_3$CoSb$_2$O$_9$. We demonstrate that dramatic modifications in magnon spectrum must occur in low out-of-plane fields that are easily achievable for this material. The hallmark of the effect is a coexistence of the clearly distinct well-defined magnon excitations with significantly broadened ones in different regions of the ${\bf k}-ω$ space. The field-induced decays are generic for this class of models and become more prominent at larger anisotropies and in higher fields.

Helicity, anisotropies and their competition in a multiferroic magnet: insight from the phase diagram

Motivated by the complex phase diagram of MnWO4, we investigate competition between anisotropy, magnetic field, and helicity for the anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model. Apart from two competing exchanges, which favor a spiral magnetic structure, the model features the bi-axial single-ion anisotropy. The model is treated in the real-space mean-field approximation and the phase diagram containing various incommensurate and commensurate states is obtained for different field orientations. We discuss similarities and differences of the theoretical phase diagram and the experimental diagram of MnWO4.

Low-field behavior of an XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet: emergent clock anisotropies

Using $\rm Er_2Ti_2O_7$ as a motivation, we investigate finite-field properties of $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnets. In addition to a fluctuation-induced six-fold anisotropy present in zero field, an external magnetic field induces a combination of two-, three-, and six-fold clock terms as a function of its orientation providing for a rich and controllable magnetothermodynamics. For $\rm Er_2Ti_2O_7$, we predict a new phase transition for ${\bf H}\parallel [001]$. Re-entrant transitions are also found for ${\bf H}\parallel [111]$. We extend these results to the whole family the $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnets and show that presence and number of low-field transitions for different orientations can be used for locating a given material in the parameter space of anisotropic pyrochlores. Finite-temperature classical Monte Carlo simulations serve to confirm and illustrate these analytic predictions.

Magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$

We report on high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) studies of magnetic excitations in the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$. Frequency-field diagrams of ESR excitations are measured for different orientations of magnetic fields up to 25 T. We show that the substantial zero-field energy gap, $Δ\approx9.5$ K, observed in the low-temperature excitation spectrum of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ [Zvyagin $et~al.$, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 077206 (2014)], is present well above $T_N$. Noticeably, the transition into the long-range magnetically ordered phase does not significantly affect the size of the gap, suggesting that even below $T_N$ the high-energy spin dynamics in Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ is determined by short-range-order spin correlations. The experimental data are compared with results of model spin-wave-theory calculations for spin-1/2 triangle-lattice antiferromagnet.

Order and excitations in large-$S$ kagomé-lattice antiferromagnets

We systematically investigate the ground-state and the spectral properties of antiferromagnets on a kagomé lattice with several common types of the planar anisotropy: $XXZ$, single-ion, and out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya. Our main focus is on the role of nonlinear, anharmonic terms, which are responsible for the quantum order-by-disorder effect and for the corresponding selection of the ground-state spin structure in many of these models. The $XXZ$ and the single-ion anisotropy models exhibit a quantum phase transition between the ${\bf q}\!=\!0$ and the $\sqrt{3}\times\!\sqrt{3}$ states as a function of the anisotropy parameter, offering a rare example of the quantum order-by-disorder fluctuations favoring a ground state which is different from the one selected by thermal fluctuations. The nonlinear terms are also shown to be crucial for a very strong near-resonant decay phenomenon leading to the quasiparticle breakdown in the kagomé-lattice antiferromagnets whose spectra are featuring flat or weakly dispersive modes. The effect is shown to persist even in the limit of large spin values and should be common to other frustrated magnets with flat branches of excitations. Model calculations of the spectrum of the $S=5/2$ Fe-jarosite with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya anisotropy provide a convincing and detailed characterization of the proposed scenario.

Spin-waves in triangular lattice antiferromagnet: decays, spectrum renormalization, and singularities

We present a comprehensive study of the dynamical properties of the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice within the framework of spin-wave theory. The distinct features of spin-wave excitations in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet are (i) finite lifetime at zero temperature due to spontaneous two-magnon decays, (ii) strong renormalization of magnon energies with respect to the harmonic result, and (iii) logarithmic singularities in the decay rate Gamma_k. Quantum corrections to the magnon spectrum are obtained using both the on-shell and off-shell solutions of the Dyson equation with the lowest-order magnon self-energy. At low-energies magnon excitations remain well-defined albeit with the anomalous decay rate Gamma_k ~ k^2 at k->0 and Gamma_k ~ |k-Q_AF|^7/2 at k->Q_AF. At high energies, magnons are heavily damped with the decay rate reaching (2 Gamma_k/E_k) ~ 0.3 for the case S=1/2. The on-shell solution shows logarithmic singularities in Gamma_k with the concomitant jump-like discontinuities in E_k along certain contours in the momentum space. Such singularities are even more prominent in the magnon spectral function A(k,w). Although the off-shell solution removes such log-singularities, the decay rates remain strongly enhanced. We also discuss the role of higher-order corrections and show that such singularities may lead to complete disappearance of the spectrum in the vicinity of certain k-points. The kinematic conditions for two-magnon decays are analyzed for various generalizations of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet as well as for the XXZ model on a kagome lattice. Our results suggest that decays and singularities in the spin-wave spectra must be ubiquitous in all these systems.

Collective impurity effects in the Heisenberg triangular antiferromagnet

We theoretically investigate the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice doped with nonmagnetic impurities. Two nontrivial effects resulting from collective impurity behavior are predicted. The first one is related to presence of uncompensated magnetic moments localized near vacancies as revealed by the low-temperature Curie tail in the magnetic susceptibility. These moments exhibit an anomalous growth with the impurity concentration, which we attribute to the clustering mechanism. In an external magnetic field, impurities lead to an even more peculiar phenomenon lifting the classical ground-state degeneracy in favor of the conical state. We analytically demonstrate that vacancies spontaneously generate a positive biquadratic exchange, which is responsible for the above degeneracy lifting.

Direct determination of exchange parameters in Cs2CuBr4 and Cs2CuCl4: high-field ESR studies

Spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ with distorted triangular-lattice structures are studied by means of electron spin resonance spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above. In the magnetically saturated phase, quantum fluctuations are fully suppressed, and the spin dynamics is defined by ordinary magnons. This allows us to accurately describe the magnetic excitation spectra in both materials and, using the harmonic spin-wave theory, to determine their exchange parameters. The viability of the proposed method was proven by applying it to Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$, yielding $J/k_B=4.7(2)$ K, $J'/k_B=1.42(7)$ K [$J'/J\simeq 0.30$] and revealing good agreement with inelastic neutron-scattering results. For the isostructural Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, we obtain $J/k_B=14.9(7)$ K, $J'/k_B=6.1(3)$ K, [$J'/J\simeq 0.41$], providing exact and conclusive information on the exchange couplings in this frustrated spin system.

Nature of finite-temperature transition in anisotropic pyrochlore Er2Ti2O7

We study the finite-temperature transition in a model XY antiferromagnet on a pyrochlore lattice, which describes the pyrochlore material Er2Ti2O7. The ordered magnetic structure selected by thermal fluctuations is six-fold degenerate. Nevertheless, our classical Monte Carlo simulations show that the critical behavior corresponds to the three-dimensional XY universality class. We determine an additional critical exponent nu_6=0.75>nu characteristic of a dangerously irrelevant scaling variable. Persistent thermal fluctuations in the ordered phase are revealed in Monte Carlo simulations by the peculiar coexistence of Bragg peaks and diffuse magnetic scattering, the feature also observed in neutron diffraction experiments.

Order from structural disorder in $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet $\rm Er_2Ti_2O_7$

Effect of structural disorder is investigated for an $XY$ pyrochlore antiferromagnet with continuous degeneracy of classical ground states. Two types of disorder, vacancies and weakly fluctuating exchange bonds, lift degeneracy selecting the same subset of classical ground states. Analytic and numerical results demonstrate that such an "order by structural disorder" mechanism competes with the effect of thermal and quantum fluctuations. Our theory predicts that a small amount of nonmagnetic impurities in $\rm{Er_2Ti_2O_7}$ will stabilize the coplanar $ψ_3$ ($m_{x^2-y^2}$) magnetic structure as opposed to the $ψ_2$ ($m_{3z^2-r^2}$) state found in pure material.

Quantum Selection of Order in an $XXZ$ Antiferromagnet on a Kagomé Lattice

Selection of the ground state of the kagomé-lattice $XXZ$ antiferromagnet by quantum fluctuations is investigated by combining non-linear spin-wave and real-space perturbation theories. The two methods unanimously favor ${\bf q}=0$ over $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetic order in a wide range of the anisotropy parameter $0\leq Δ\leq 0.72$. Both approaches are also in an accord on the magnitude of the quantum order-by-disorder effect generated by topologically non-trivial, loop-like spin-flip processes. A tentative $S-Δ$ phase diagram of the model is proposed.

Real-space perturbation theory for frustrated magnets: application to magnetization plateaus

We present a unified approach to the problem of degeneracy lifting in geometrically frustrated magnets with and without an external field. The method treats fluctuations around a classical spin configuration in terms of a real-space perturbation expansion. We calculate two lowest-order contributions for the Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian and use them to study the magnetization processes of spin-$S$ triangular and kagomé antiferromagnets.

Role of dimensionality in spontaneous magnon decay: easy-plane ferromagnet

We calculate magnon lifetime in an easy-plane ferromagnet on a tetragonal lattice in transverse magnetic field. At zero temperature magnons are unstable with respect to spontaneous decay into two other magnons. Varying ratio of intrachain to interchain exchanges in this model we consider the effect of dimensionality on spontaneous magnon decay. The strongest magnon damping is found in the quasi-one-dimensional case for momenta near the Brillouin zone boundary. The sign of a weak interchain coupling has a little effect on the magnon decay rate. The obtained theoretical results suggest possibility of experimental observation of spontaneous magnon decay in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet CsNiF$_3$. We also find an interesting enhancement of the magnon decay rate for a three-dimensional ferromagnet. The effect is present only for the nearest-neighbor model and is related to effective dimensionality reduction in the two-magnon continuum.

Spontaneous Magnon Decays

A theoretical overview of the phenomenon of spontaneous magnon decays in quantum antiferromagnets is presented. The intrinsic zero-temperature damping of magnons in quantum spin systems is a fascinating many-body effect, which has recently attracted significant attention in view of its possible observation in neutron-scattering experiments. An introduction to the theory of magnon interactions and a discussion of necessary symmetry and kinematic conditions for spontaneous decays are provided. Various parallels with the decays of anharmonic phonons and excitations in superfluid 4He are extensively used. Three principal cases of spontaneous magnon decays are considered: field-induced decays in Heisenberg antiferromagnets, zero-field decays in spiral antiferromagnets, and triplon decays in quantum-disordered magnets. Analytical results are compared with available numerical data and prospective materials for experimental observation of the decay-related effects are briefly discussed.

Triangular antiferromagnet with nonmagnetic impurities

The effect of nonmagnetic impurities on the phase diagram of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice is investigated. We present analytical arguments confirmed by numerical calculations that at zero temperature vacancies stabilize a conical state providing an example of "order by quenched disorder" effect. Competition between thermal fluctuations and the site disorder leads to a complicated H-T phase diagram, which is deduced from the classical Monte Carlo simulations for a representative vacancy concentration. For the XY triangular-lattice antiferromagnet with in-plane external field nonmagnetic impurities stabilize the fan-like spin structure. We also briefly discuss the effect of quantum fluctuations.

Broken discrete symmetries in a frustrated honeycomb antiferromagnet

We study the magnetic phase diagram of the $J_1$--$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice at the strongly frustrated point $J_2/J_1=1/2$ using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. At low temperatures we find three different field regimes, each characterized by different broken discrete symmetries. In low magnetic fields up to $h_{c1}/J_1\approx 2.9$ the $Z_3$ rotational lattice symmetry is spontaneously broken while a 1/2-magnetization plateau is stabilized around $h_{c2}/J_1=4$. The collinear plateau state and the coplanar state in higher fields break the $Z_4$ translational symmetry and correspond to triple-$q$ magnetic structures. The intermediate phase $h_{c1}<h<h_{c2}$ has an interesting symmetry structure, breaking simultaneously the $Z_3$ and $Z_4$ symmetries. At much lower temperatures the spatial broken discrete symmetries coexist with the quasi long-range order of the transverse spin components.

Dynamical structure factor of quasi-2D antiferromagnet in high fields

We study high-field magnon dynamics and examine the dynamical structure factor in the quasi-2D tetragonal Heisenberg antiferromagnet with interlayer coupling corresponding to realistic materials. Within spin-wave theory, we show that a non-zero interlayer coupling mitigates singular corrections to the excitation spectrum occurring in the high-field regime that would otherwise require a self-consistent approach beyond the 1/S approximation. For the fields between the threshold for decays and saturation field we observe widening of the two-magnon sidebands with significant shifting of the spectral weight away from the quasiparticle peak. We find spectrum broadening throughout large regions of the Brillouin zone, dramatic redistributions of spectral weight to the two-magnon continuum, two-peak structures and other features clearly unlike conventional single-particle peaks.

Lifetime of Gapped Excitations in a Collinear Quantum Antiferromagnet

We demonstrate that local modulations of magnetic couplings have a profound effect on the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of optical magnons in a wide class of antiferromagnets in which gapped excitations coexist with acoustic spin waves. In a two-dimensional collinear antiferromagnet with an easy-plane anisotropy, the disorder-induced relaxation rate of the gapped mode, Gamma_imp=Gamma_0+A(TlnT)^2, greatly exceeds the magnon-magnon damping, Gamma_m-m=BT^5, negligible at low temperatures. We measure the lifetime of gapped magnons in a prototype XY antiferromagnet BaNi2(PO4)2 using a high-resolution neutron-resonance spin-echo technique and find experimental data in close accord with the theoretical prediction. Similarly strong effects of disorder in the three-dimensional case and in noncollinear antiferromagnets are discussed.

Quantum order by disorder and accidental soft mode Er2Ti2O7

Motivated by recent neutron scattering experiments, we derive and study an effective "pseudo-dipolar" spin-1/2 model for the XY pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er2Ti2O7. While a bond-dependent in-plane exchange anisotropy removes any continuous symmetry, it does lead to a one-parameter `accidental' classical degeneracy. This degeneracy is lifted by quantum fluctuations in favor of the non-coplanar spin structure observed experimentally -- a rare experimental instance of quantum order by disorder. A non-Goldstone low-energy mode is present in the excitation spectrum in accordance with inelastic neutron scattering data. Our theory also resolves the puzzle of the experimentally observed continuous ordering transition, absent from previous models.

Roton-Phonon Interactions in Superfluid 4He

High-resolution neutron resonance spin-echo measurements of superfluid 4He show that the roton energy does not have the same temperature dependence as the inverse lifetime. Diagrammatic analysis attributes this to the interaction of rotons with thermally excited phonons via both four- and three-particle processes, the latter being allowed by the broken gauge symmetry of the Bose condensate. The distinct temperature dependence of the roton energy at low temperatures suggests that the net roton-phonon interaction is repulsive.

Interplay of Spin and Lattice Degrees of Freedom in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet CdCr_2O_4: High-field and Temperature Induced Anomalies of the Elastic Constants

Temperature and magnetic field studies of the elastic constants of the chromium spinel CdCr_2O_4 show pronounced anomalies related to strong spin-phonon coupling in this frustrated antiferromagnet. A detailed comparison of the longitudinal acoustic mode propagating along the [111] direction with theory based on an exchange-striction mechanism leads to an estimate of the strength of the magneto-elastic interaction. The derived spin-phonon coupling constant is in good agreement with previous determinations based on infrared absorption. Further insight is gained from intermediate and high magnetic field experiments in the field regime of the magnetization plateau. The role of the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction discussed and we compare the spin-phonon coupling in CdCr_2O_4 in both the ordered and disordered states.

Magnetic Exchange Interactions in BaMn2As2: A Case Study of the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg Model

BaMn2As2 is unique among BaT2As2 compounds crystallizing in the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr2Si2 structure, which contain stacked square lattices of 3d transition metal T atoms, since it has an insulating large-moment (3.9 muB/Mn) G-type (checkerboard) antiferromagnetic AF ground state. We report measurements of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi versus temperature T from 300 to 1000 K of single crystals of BaMn2As2, and magnetic inelastic neutron scattering measurements at 8 K and 75As NMR measurements from 4 to 300 K of polycrystalline samples. The Neel temperature determined from the chi(T) measurements is TN = 618(3) K. The measurements are analyzed using the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model. Linear spin wave theory for G-type AF ordering and classical and quantum Monte Carlo simulations and molecular field theory calculations of chi(T) and of the magnetic heat capacity Cmag(T) are presented versus J1, J2 and Jc. We also obtain band theoretical estimates of the exchange couplings in BaMn2As2. From analyses of our chi(T), NMR, neutron scattering, and previously published heat capacity data for BaMn2As2 on the basis of the above theories for the J1-J2-Jc Heisenberg model and our band-theoretical results, our best estimates of the exchange constants in BaMn2As2 are J1 = 13 meV, J2/J1 = 0.3 and Jc/J1 = 0.1, which are all antiferromagnetic. From our classical Monte Carlo simulations of the G-type AF ordering transition, these exchange parameters predict TN = 640 K for spin S = 5/2, in close agreement with experiment. Using spin wave theory, we also utilize these exchange constants to estimate the suppression of the ordered moment due to quantum fluctuations for comparison with the observed value and again obtain S = 5/2 for the Mn spin.

Spontaneous magnon decays in planar ferromagnet

We predict that spin-waves in an easy-plane ferromagnet have a finite lifetime at zero temperature due to spontaneous decays. In zero field the damping is determined by three-magnon decay processes, whereas decays in the two-particle channel dominate in a transverse magnetic field. Explicit calculations of the magnon damping are performed in the framework of the spin-wave theory for the $XXZ$ square-lattice ferromagnet with an anisotropy parameter $λ<1$. In zero magnetic field the decays occur for $λ^*<λ<1$ with $λ^*\approx 1/7$. We also discuss possibility of experimental observation of the predicted effect in a number of ferromagnetic insulators.

Field-induced decay dynamics in square-lattice antiferromagnet

Dynamical properties of the square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet in applied magnetic field are studied for arbitrary value S of the spin. Above the threshold field for two-particle decays, the standard spin-wave theory yields singular corrections to the excitation spectrum with logarithmic divergences for certain momenta. We develop a self-consistent approximation applicable for S >= 1, which avoids such singularities and provides regularized magnon decay rates. Results for the dynamical structure factor obtained in this approach are presented for S = 1 and S = 5/2.

Magnetic phase diagrams of classical triangular and kagome antiferromagnets

We investigate the effect of geometrical frustration on the $H$--$T$ phase diagrams of the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnets on triangular and kagome lattices. The phase diagrams for the two models are obtained from large scale Monte Carlo simulations. For the kagome antiferromagnet thermal fluctuations are unable to lift completely degeneracy and stabilize translationally disordered multipolar phases. We find a substantial difference in the temperature scales of the order by disorder effect related to different degeneracy of the low- and the high-field classical ground states in the kagome antiferromagnet. In the low-field regime, the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition into a spin-nematic phase is produced by unbinding of half-quantum vortices.

Magnon pairing in quantum spin nematic

Competing ferro- and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions may lead to the formation of bound magnon pairs in the high-field phase of a frustrated quantum magnet. With decreasing field, magnon pairs undergo a Bose-condensation prior to the onset of a conventional one-magnon instability. We develop an analytical approach to study the zero-temperature properties of the magnon-pair condensate, which is a bosonic analog of the BCS superconductors. Representation of the condensate wave-function in terms of the coherent bosonic states reveals the spin-nematic symmetry of the ground-state and allows one to calculate various static properties. Sharp quasiparticle excitations are found in the nematic state with a small finite gap. We also predict the existence of a long-range ordered spin-nematic phase in the frustrated chain material LiCuVO4 at high fields.

Magnetic excitations in dipolar pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$

The spin dynamics in the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet $\rm Gd_2Sn_2O_7$ is studied by means of the electron spin resonance. In the ordered phase ($T_N = 1$ K), we have detected three gapped resonance modes. Their values agree well with the developed spin-wave theory which takes into account the Heisenberg nearest-neighbor exchange, the single-ion anisotropy and the long-range dipolar interactions. The theory also predicts a fourth lowest-frequency gap, which lies beyond the experimental range of frequencies, but determines the exponential decrease of the specific heat at low temperature.

Lattice gas description of pyrochlore and checkerboard antiferromagnets in a strong magnetic field

Quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on pyrochlore and checkerboard lattices in a strong external magnetic field are mapped onto hard-core lattice gases with an extended exclusion region. The effective models are studied by the exchange Monte Carlo simulations and by the transfer matrix method. The transition point and the critical exponents are obtained numerically for a square-lattice gas of particles with the second-neighbor exclusion, which describes a checkerboard antiferromagnet. Magnetic resonance in a pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

Electron spin resonance study of frustrated pyrochlore Gd2Ti2O7 is performed in a wide frequency band for a temperature range 0.4-30 K, which covers paramagnetic and magnetically ordered phases. The paramagnetic resonance reveals the spectroscopic g-factor about 2.0 and a temperature dependent linewidth. In ordered phases magnetic resonance spectra are distinctive for a nonplanar cubic (or tetrahedral) antiferromagnet with an isotropic susceptibility. In the high-field saturated phase, weakly-dispersive soft modes are observed and their field evolution is traced.

MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF UNCONVENTIONAL SUPERCONDUCTORS

The article reviews recent developments on magnetic properties of superconductors with anisotropic Cooper pairing. In particular, we show how the concept of broken symmetries is applied to the investigation of the mixed state in superconductors with a multicomponent order parameter. Starting from the phenomenological description in the framework of the generalized Ginzburg-Landau theory, we discuss different types of quantized vortices appearing at $H_{c1}$ in states with and without time-reversal breaking. General classification of superconducting phase transitions in a uniform magnetic field at $H_{c2}$ is constructed. Vortex lattices of different forms are found in the vicinity of the upper critical field. Symmetry arguments are used to classify phase transitions inside the mixed state. Special attention is given to results which can be obtained analytically. Also special emphasis is put on the open questions of the theory.
