Strong convergence of quantum channels: continuity of the Stinespring dilation and discontinuity of the unitary dilation

We show that a sequence $\{Φ_n\}$ of quantum channels strongly converges to a quantum channel $Φ_0$ if and only if there exist a common environment for all the channels and a corresponding sequence $\{V_n\}$ of Stinespring isometries strongly converging to a Stinespring isometry $V_0$ of the channel $Φ_0$. We also give a quantitative description of the above characterization of the strong convergence in terms of the appropriate metrics on the sets of quantum channels and Stinespring isometries. As a result, the uniform selective continuity of the complementary operation with respect to the strong convergence is established. We show discontinuity of the unitary dilation by constructing a strongly converging sequence of channels which can not be represented as a reduction of a strongly converging sequence of unitary channels. The Stinespring representation of strongly converging sequences of quantum channels allows to prove the lower semicontinuity of the entropic disturbance as a function of a pair (channel, input ensemble). Some corollaries of this property are considered.

On superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity and the related property of quantum measurements

We begin with a detailed description of a low dimensional quantum channel ($d_A=4, d_E=3$) demonstrating the symmetric form of superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity. This means appearance of a noiseless (perfectly reversible) subchannel in the tensor square of a channel having no noiseless subchannels. Then we describe a quantum channel $Φ$ such that $\,\bar{Q}_0(Φ)=0$ and $\,\bar{Q}_0(Φ\otimesΦ)\geq\log n\,$ for any $\,n\leq+\infty$. We also show that the superactivation of one-shot zero-error quantum capacity of a channel can be reformulated in terms of quantum measurements theory as appearance of an indistinguishable subspace for tensor product of two observables having no indistinguishable subspaces.

On channels with positive quantum zero-error capacity having vanishing n-shot capacity

We show that unbounded number of channel uses may be necessary for perfect transmission of quantum information. For any n we explicitly construct low-dimensional quantum channels ($d_A$=4, $d_E$=2 or 4) whose quantum zero-error capacity is positive but the corresponding n-shot capacity is zero. We give estimates for quantum zero-error capacity of such channels (as a function of n) and show that these channels can be chosen in any small vicinity (in the cb-norm) of a classical-quantum channel. Mathematically, this property means appearance of an ideal (noiseless) subchannel only in sufficiently large tensor power of a channel. Our approach (using special continuous deformation of a maximal commutative *-subalgebra of $M_4$) also gives low-dimensional examples of superactivation of 1-shot quantum zero-error capacity. Finally, we consider multi-dimensional construction which gives channels with greater values of quantum zero-error capacity and vanishing n-shot capacity.

Squashed entanglement in infinite dimensions

We analyse two possible definitions of the squashed entanglement in an infinite-dimensional bipartite system: direct translation of the finite-dimensional definition and its universal extension. It is shown that the both definitions produce the same lower semicontinuous entanglement measure possessing all basis properties of the squashed entanglement on the set of states having at least one finite marginal entropy. Is also shown that the second definition gives an adequate extension of this measure to the set of all states of infinite-dimensional bipartite system. A general condition relating continuity of the squashed entanglement to continuity of the quantum mutual information is proved and its corollaries are considered. Continuity bound for the squashed entanglement under the energy constraint on one subsystem is obtained by using the tight continuity bound for conditional mutual information (proved in the Appendix by using Winter's technique). It is shown that the same continuity bound is valid for the entanglement of formation. As a result the asymptotic continuity of the both entanglement measures under the energy constraint on one subsystem is proved.

Monotonicity of the Holevo quantity: a necessary condition for equality in terms of a channel and its applications

A condition for reversibility (sufficiency) of a channel with respect to a given countable family of states with bounded rank is obtained. This condition shows that a quantum channel preserving the Holevo quantity of at least one (discrete or continuous) ensemble of states with rank $\leq r$ has the r-partially entanglement-breaking complementary channel. Several applications of this result are considered. In particular, it is shown that coincidence of the constrained Holevo capacity and the quantum mutual information of a quantum channel at least at one full rank state implies that this channel is entanglement-breaking.

On equalities in two entropic inequalities

A simple criterion for local equality between the constrained Holevo capacity and the quantum mutual information of a quantum channel is obtained. It implies that the set of all states for which this equality holds is determined by the kernel of the channel (as a linear map). Applications to Bosonic Gaussian channels are considered. It is shown that for a Gaussian channel having no completely depolarizing components the above characteristics may coincide only at non-Gaussian mixed states and a criterion of existence of such states is given. All the obtained results may be reformulated as conditions for equality between the constrained Holevo capacity of a quantum channel and the input von Neumann entropy.

On singular Bosonic linear channels

Properties of Bosonic linear (quasi-free) channels, in particular, Bosonic Gaussian channels with two types of degeneracy are considered. The first type of degeneracy can be interpreted as existence of noise-free canonical variables (for Gaussian channels it means that $\detα=0$). It is shown that this degeneracy implies existence of (infinitely many) "direct sum decompositions" of Bosonic linear channel, which clarifies reversibility properties of this channel (described in arXiv:1212.2354) and provides explicit construction of reversing channels. The second type of degeneracy consists in rank deficiency of the operator describing transformations of canonical variables. It is shown that this degeneracy implies existence of (infinitely many) decompositions of input space into direct sum of orthogonal subspaces such that the restriction of Bosonic linear channel to each of these subspaces is a discrete classical-quantum channel.

On the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of infinite-dimensional quantum channels

The coding theorem for the entanglement-assisted communication via infinite-dimensional quantum channel with linear constraint is extended to a natural degree of generality. Relations between the entanglement-assisted classical capacity and the $χ$-capacity of constrained channels are obtained and conditions for their coincidence are given. Sufficient conditions for continuity of the entanglement-assisted classical capacity as a function of a channel are obtained. Some applications of the obtained results to analysis of Gaussian channels are considered. A general (continuous) version of the fundamental relation between the coherent information and the measure of privacy of classical information transmission by infinite-dimensional quantum channel is proved.

Reversibility conditions for quantum channels and their applications

A necessary condition for reversibility (sufficiency) of a quantum channel with respect to complete families of states with bounded rank is obtained. A full description (up to isometrical equivalence) of all quantum channels reversible with respect to orthogonal and nonorthogonal complete families of pure states is given. Some applications in quantum information theory are considered. The main results can be formulated in terms of the operator algebras theory (as conditions for reversibility of channels between algebras of all bounded operators).

Reversibility of a quantum channel: general conditions and their applications to Bosonic linear channels

The method of complementary channel for analysis of reversibility (sufficiency) of a quantum channel with respect to families of input states (pure states for the most part) are considered and applied to Bosonic linear (quasi-free) channels, in particular, to Bosonic Gaussian channels. The obtained reversibility conditions for Bosonic linear channels have clear physical interpretation and their sufficiency is also shown by explicit construction of reversing channels. The method of complementary channel gives possibility to prove necessity of these conditions and to describe all reversed families of pure states in the Schrodinger representation. Some applications in quantum information theory are considered. Conditions for existence of discrete classical-quantum subchannels and of completely depolarizing subchannels of a Bosonic linear channel are obtained in the Appendix.

A criterion for coincidence of the entanglement-assisted classical capacity and the Holevo capacity of a quantum channel

It is easy to show coincidence of the entanglement-assisted classical capacity and the Holevo capacity for any c-q channel between finite dimensional quantum systems. In this paper we prove the converse assertion: coincidence of the above-mentioned capacities of a quantum channel implies that the $χ$-essential part of this channel is a c-q channel (the $χ$-essential part is a restriction of a channel obtained by discarding all input states useless for transmission of classical information). The above observations are generalized to infinite dimensional quantum channels with linear constraints by using the obtained conditions for coincidence of the quantum mutual information and the constrained Holevo capacity.

preprint2012arXiv

Conditions for equality between entanglement-assisted and unassisted classical capacities of a quantum channel

Several relations between the Holevo capacity and the entanglement-assisted classical capacity of a quantum channel are proved, necessary and sufficient conditions for their coincidence are obtained. In particular, it is shown that these capacities coincide if (correspondingly, only if) the channel (correspondingly, the $χ$--essential part of the channel) belongs to the class of classical-quantum channels (the $χ$-essential part is a restriction of a channel obtained by discarding all states useless for transmission of classical information). The obtained conditions and their corollaries are generalized to channels with linear constraints. By using these conditions it is shown that the question of coincidence of the Holevo capacity and the entanglement-assisted classical capacity depends on the constraint (even for classical-quantum channels). Properties of the difference between the quantum mutual information and the $χ$-function (constrained Holevo capacity) of a quantum channel are explored.

On a conjectured property of the von Neumann entropy valid in the commutative case

It is well known that the von Neumann entropy is continuous on a subset of quantum states with bounded energy provided the Hamiltonian $H$ of the system satisfies the condition $\Tr\exp(-cH)<+\infty$ for any $c>0$. In this note we consider the following conjecture: every closed convex subset of quantum states, on which the von Neumann entropy is continuous, consists of states with bounded energy with respect to a particular Hamiltonian $H$ satisfying the above condition. It is shown that the classical analog of this conjecture is valid (i.e. it is valid for the Shannon entropy). It is also shown that this conjecture holds for some types of subsets consisting of non-commuting states, but its validity for all subsets of quantum states remains an open question.

Generalized compactness in linear spaces and its applications

The class of subsets of locally convex spaces called $μ$-compact sets is considered. This class contains all compact sets as well as several noncompact sets widely used in applications. It is shown that many results well known for compact sets can be generalized to $μ$-compact sets. Several examples are considered. The main result of the paper is a generalization to $μ$-compact convex sets of the Vesterstrom-O'Brien theorem showing equivalence of the particular properties of a compact convex set (s.t. openness of the mixture map, openness of the barycenter map and of its restriction to maximal measures, continuity of a convex hull of any continuous function, continuity of a convex hull of any concave continuous function). It is shown that the Vesterstrom-O'Brien theorem does not hold for pointwise $μ$-compact convex sets defined by the slight relaxing of the $μ$-compactness condition. Applications of the obtained results to quantum information theory are considered.

On properties of the space of quantum states and their application to construction of entanglement monotones

We consider two properties of the set of quantum states as a convex topological space and some their implications concerning the notions of a convex hull and of a convex roof of a function defined on a subset of quantum states. By using these results we analyze two infinite-dimensional versions (discrete and continuous) of the convex roof construction of entanglement monotones, which is widely used in finite dimensions. It is shown that the discrete version may be 'false' in the sense that the resulting functions may not possess the main property of entanglement monotones while the continuous version can be considered as a 'true' generalized convex roof construction. We give several examples of entanglement monotones produced by this construction. In particular, we consider an infinite-dimensional generalization of the notion of Entanglement of Formation and study its properties.

The Schmidt number and partially entanglement breaking channels in infinite dimensions

A definition of the Schmidt number of a state of an infinite dimensional bipartite quantum system is given and properties of the corresponding family of Schmidt classes are considered. The existence of states with a given Schmidt number such that any their countable convex decomposition does not contain pure states with finite Schmidt rank is established. Partially entanglement breaking channels in infinite dimensions are studied. Several properties of these channels well known in finite dimensions are generalized to the infinite dimensional case. At the same time, the existence of partially entanglement breaking channels (in particular, entanglement breaking channels) such that all operators in any their Kraus representations have infinite rank is proved.

Characterization of convex $μ$-compact sets

The class of $μ$-compact sets can be considered as a natural extension of the class of compact metrizable subsets of locally convex spaces, to which the particular results well known for compact sets can be generalized. This class contains all compact sets as well as many noncompact sets widely used in applications. In this paper we give a characterization of a convex $μ$-compact set in terms of properties of functions defined on this set. Namely, we prove that the class of convex $μ$-compact sets can be characterized by continuity of the operation of convex closure of a function (= the double Fenchel transform) with respect to monotonic pointwise converging sequences of continuous bounded and of lower semicontinuous lower bounded functions.

Continuity condition for concave functions on convex $μ$-compact sets and its applications in quantum physics

A method of proving local continuity of concave functions on convex set possessing the $μ$-compactness property is presented. This method is based on a special approximation of these functions. The class of $μ$-compact sets can be considered as a natural extension of the class of compact metrizable subsets of locally convex spaces, to which particular results well known for compact sets can be generalized. Applications of the obtained continuity conditions to analysis of different entropic characteristics of quantum systems and channels are considered.

Entropy reduction of quantum measurements

It is observed that the entropy reduction (the information gain in the initial terminology) of an efficient (ideal or pure) quantum measurement coincides with the generalized quantum mutual information of a q-c channel mapping an a priori state to the corresponding posteriori probability distribution of the outcomes of the measurement. This observation makes it possible to define the entropy reduction for arbitrary a priori states (not only for states with finite von Neumann entropy) and to study its analytical properties by using general properties of the quantum mutual information. By using this approach one can show that the entropy reduction of an efficient quantum measurement is a nonnegative lower semicontinuous concave function on the set of all a priori states having continuous restrictions to subsets on which the von Neumann entropy is continuous. Monotonicity and subadditivity of the entropy reduction are also easily proved by this method. A simple continuity condition for the entropy reduction and for the mean posteriori entropy considered as functions of a pair (a priori state, measurement) is obtained. A characterization of an irreducible measurement (in the Ozawa sense) which is not efficient is considered in the Appendix.

Mutual and coherent informations for infinite-dimensional quantum channels

The work is devoted to study of quantum mutual information and coherent information -- the two important characteristics of quantum communication channel. Appropriate definitions of these quantities in the infinite-dimensional case are given and their properties are studied in detail. Basic identities relating quantum mutual information and coherent information of a pair of complementary channels are proved. An unexpected continuity property of quantum mutual information and coherent information following from the above identities is observed. An upper bound for the coherent information is obtained.

The output entropy of quantum channels and operations

Continuity properties of the output entropy of positive linear maps between Banach spaces of trace class operators are investigated with the special attention to the classes of quantum channels and operations. It is shown that finiteness of the output entropy of a positive map on the whole input state space implies its continuity. Sufficient conditions for this property expressed in terms of the Kraus representation of quantum channels and operations are presented. The characterization of a positive map "preserving continuity of the entropy" (in the sense that continuity of the entropy on a set of input states implies continuity of its output entropy on this set) is obtained and its applications to the class of quantum operations are considered. The special relation between continuity properties of the output entropies of complementary quantum operations is established and its corollaries are discussed. Continuity conditions for the output entropy of positive maps considered as a function of a pair (map, input state) are also obtained. Several applications to the quantum information theory are presented in the last part of the paper.

preprint2009arXiv

Continuity of the von Neumann entropy

A general method for proving continuity of the von Neumann entropy on subsets of positive trace-class operators is considered. This makes it possible to re-derive the known conditions for continuity of the entropy in more general forms and to obtain several new conditions. The method is based on a particular approximation of the von Neumann entropy by an increasing sequence of concave continuous unitary invariant functions defined using decompositions into finite rank operators. The existence of this approximation is a corollary of a general property of the set of quantum states as a convex topological space called the strong stability property. This is considered in the first part of the paper.

Entropic characteristics of subsets of states

This paper is devoted to systematic study of properties of the quantum entropy and of the Holevo capacity considered as a function of a set of quantum states. The properties of restriction of the quantum entropy to arbitrary set of states are discussed. For some types of sets necessary and sufficient conditions of boundedness and of continuity of restriction of the quantum entropy as well as necessary and sufficient conditions of existence of the Gibbs state are obtained. The Holevo capacity of an arbitrary set of states and its general properties as a function of a set are considered. The notion of the optimal average state of an arbitrary set of states with finite Holevo capacity is introduced. The condition of existence of optimal measure for a set of states is obtained. The general results concerning the quantum entropy and the Holevo capacity are illustrated by considering the several examples of sets of states.

Separability and Entanglement-Breaking in Infinite Dimensions

In this paper we give a general integral representation for separable states in the tensor product of infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces and provide the first example of separable states that are not countably decomposable. We also prove the structure theorem for the quantum communication channels that are entanglement-breaking, generalizing the finite-dimensional result of M. Horodecki, Ruskai and Shor. In the finite dimensional case such channels can be characterized as having the Kraus representation with operators of rank 1. The above example implies existence of infinite-dimensional entanglement-breaking channels having no such representation.
