Snowmass 2021/22 Letter of Interest: A Forward Calorimeter at the LHC

A forward electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeter (FoCal) was proposed as an upgrade to the ALICE experiment, to be installed during LS3 for data-taking in 2027--2029 at the LHC. The FoCal extends the scope of ALICE, which was designed for the comprehensive study of hot and dense partonic matter, by adding new capabilities to explore the small-$x$ parton structure of nucleons and nuclei. The primary objective of the FoCal is high-precision inclusive measurement of direct photons and jets, as well as coincident gamma-jet and jet-jet measurements, in pp and p--Pb collisions. These measurements by FoCal constitute an essential part of a comprehensive small-$x$ program at the LHC down to $x\sim10^{-6}$ and over a large range of $Q^2$ with a broad array of complementary probes, comprising -- in addition to the photon measurements by FoCal and LHCb -- Drell-Yan and open charm measurements planned by LHCb, as well as photon-induced reactions performed by all LHC experiments.

Central exclusive $χ_{c,b}$ production at high energy colliders and gluon saturation approach

The central exclusive production of $χ_{c}$ and $χ_{b}$ at the LHC, RHIC and Tevatron energies is analyzed, using the recent unintegrated parton distribution (UGDs) functions available in the package TMDlib. Comparison with data is performed, which tests the underlying assumptions basing the theoretical approach and it can constrain the unintegrated gluon distribution function at the small-$x$ region. Predictions for LHC energies using recent UGDs based in CCFM formalism are provided. It is explored the underlying uncertainties on this production as the choice for the unintegrated gluon distribution and factorization scale is done. Moreover, based on the parton saturation model for the gluon distribution, analytical expressions for the rapidity distributions are proposed. The prompt production of $J/ψ+γ$ and $Υ+γ$ is computed for the first time for LHC energies within the very same formalism used for $χ$ production.

Photoproduction of Upsilon states in ultraperipheral collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider within the color dipole approach

The exclusive photoproduction of upsilon states $Υ(1S)$ and its radially excited states $Υ(2S,3S)$ is investigated in the context of ultra-peripheral collisions at the LHC energies. Predictions are presented for their production in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collision at the energies available at the LHC run 2. The rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are shown, and the robustness of the model is tested against the experimental results considering $ψ(1S,2S)$ and $Υ(1S)$ states. The theoretical framework considered in the analysis is the light-cone color dipole formalism, which includes consistently parton saturation effects and nuclear shadowing corrections.

A study on the low mass Drell-Yan production at the CERN LHC within the dipole formalism

We present results for the low mass Drell-Yan (DY) production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC in the color dipole formalism. The DY differential cross sections at 7 TeV as a function of dilepton rapidity, transverse momentum and invariant mass are discussed. We have imposed kinematical cuts related to the low mass DY production investigated by ATLAS and LHCb collaborations.

This work investigates the exclusive photoproduction of $ψ(2S)$ meson off nuclei evaluating the coherent and the incoherent contributions. The theoretical framework used in the present analysis is the light-cone dipole formalism and predictions are done for PbPb collisions at the CERN-LHC energy of 2.76 TeV. In this work we investigate the photoproduction of radially excited vector mesons off nuclei in heavy ion relativistic collisions. In particular, we analyze the exclusive photoproduction of psi(2S) off nuclei, evaluating the coherent and the incoherent contributions to that process. The theoretical framework used in the present analysis is the light-cone dipole formalism and predictions are done for PbPb collisions at the CERN-LHC energy of 2.76 TeV. The theoretical uncertainties are analyzed and comparison is also done to the recent ALICE Collaboration data for the psi(1S) state photoproduction.

The theoretical framework considered in the analysis is the light-cone dipole formalism and predictions are done for proton-proton collisions at the CERN-LHC energy of 7 TeV. The theoretical uncertainties are investigated and comparison is done to the recent LHCb Collaboration data for the exclusive charmonium production.

Inclusive hadron and photon production at LHC in dipole momentum space

Using a momentum space model for the dipole scattering amplitude we present an analysis of the saturation effects at LHC energies, describing the data on proton-proton and proton-lead collisions. The model is based on the asymptotic solutions of the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation, being ideal in the saturation domain where the target wave function has a high occupation number. We also make predictions for the nuclear modification ratios on charged hadron and prompt photon production in the forward region, where the high parton density effects are important.

Estimations for the Higgs boson production with QCD and EW corrections in exclusive events at the LHC

The Higgs boson production is investigated in proton-proton collisions at next-to-leading-order accuracy in central exclusive diffractive processes at the LHC. The production process by the double Pomeron exchange is analyzed in the diffractive factorization through the Ingelman-Schlein approach, taking into account the parton content of the Pomeron by the diffractive partonic distribution function provided by the H1 Collaboration. Hence, we estimate the production cross section of the Higgs boson as well as its rapidity distribution for distinct energies of the LHC. Also, we include the gap survival probability in our calculation, which is studied in recent works and expected to lie in the range between 1% and 5% for the energy regime of 14 TeV. As a result, we found a production cross section of about 0.3--0.8 (1.2--3.7) fb at 7 (14) TeV, being of the same order as predicted by the two-photon and the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov Pomeron mechanisms. Therefore, assuming the selection rules of spin-parity properties, the exclusive production is a promising channel for the Higgs boson detection in the LHC.

Estimations for the Single Diffractive production of the Higgs boson at the Tevatron and the LHC

The single diffractive production of the standard model Higgs boson is computed using the diffractive factorization formalism, taking into account a parametrization for the Pomeron structure function provided by the H1 Collaboration. We compute the cross sections at next-to-leading order accuracy for the gluon fusion process, which includes QCD and electroweak corrections. The gap survival probability ($<\!|S|^2\!>$) is also introduced to account for the rescattering corrections due to spectator particles present in the interaction, and to this end we compare two different models for the survival factor. The diffractive ratios are predicted for proton-proton collisions at the Tevatron and the LHC for the Higgs boson mass of $M_H$ = 120 GeV. Therefore, our results provide updated estimations for the diffractive ratios of the single diffractive production of the Higgs boson in the Tevatron and LHC kinematical regimes.

Higgs boson photoproduction at the LHC

We present the current development of the photoproduction approach for the Higgs boson with its application to $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC. We perform a different analysis for the Gap Survival Probability, where we consider a probability of 3% and also a more optimistic value of 10% based on the HERA data for dijet production. As a result, the cross section for the exclusive Higgs boson production is about 2 fb and 6 fb in $pp$ collisions and 617 and 2056 fb for $p$Pb collisions, considering the gap survival factor of 3% and 10%, respectively.

Momentum space saturation model for deep inelastic scattering and single inclusive hadron production

We show how the AGBS model, originally developed for deep inelastic scattering applied to HERA data on the proton structure function, can also describe the RHIC data on single inclusive hadron yield for $d+Au$ and $p+p$ collisions through a new simultaneous fit. The single inclusive hadron production is modeled through the color glass condensate, which uses the quark(and gluon)--condensate amplitudes in momentum space. The AGBS model is also a momentum space model based on the asymptotic solutions of the BK equation, although a different definition of the Fourier transform is used. This aspect is overcome and a description entirely in transverse momentum of both processes arises for the first time. The small difference between the simultaneous fit and the one for HERA data alone suggests that the AGBS model describes very well both kind of processes and thus emerges as a good tool to investigate the inclusive hadron production data. We use this model for predictions at LHC energies, which agree very well with available experimental data.

Single and Central Diffractive Higgs Production at the LHC

The single and central diffractive production of the Standard Model Higgs boson is computed using the diffractive factorization formalism, taking into account a parametrization for the Pomeron structure function provided by the H1 Collaboration. We compute the cross sections at NLO accuracy for the gluon fusion process, since it is the leading mechanism for the Higgs boson production. The gap survival probability is also introduced to include the rescattering corrections due to spectator particles present in the interaction. The diffractive ratios are predicted for proton-proton collisions at the LHC, since the beam luminosity is favorable to the Higgs boson detection. These results provide updated estimations for the fraction of single and central diffractive events in the LHC kinematical regime.

Charm and bottom production in inclusive double Pomeron exchange in heavy ion collisions at the LHC

The inclusive double Pomeron exchange cross section for heavy quark pair production is calculated for nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. The present estimate is based on hard diffractive factorization, corrected by absorptive corrections and nuclear effects. The theoretical uncertainties for nuclear collisions are investigated and a comparison to other approaches is presented. The production channels producing a similar final state configuration are discussed as well.

preprint2010arXiv

Diffractive Higgs boson photoproduction in Ultraperipheral Collisions at LHC

A new production mechanism for the Standard Model Higgs boson in Ultraperipheral Collisions at LHC, which allows Central Exclusive Diffractive production by Double Pomeron Exchange in photon-proton processes, is presented. The Higgs boson is centrally produced by gluon fusion with two Large Rapidity Gaps emerging in the final state, being the main experimental signature for this process. As already studied for Pomeron-Pomeron and two-photon processes, the Higgs boson photoproduction is studied within this new mechanism in proton-proton ($pp$) and proton-nucleus ($pA$) collisions, where each system has a different dynamics to be taken into account. As a result, this mechanism predicts a production cross section for $pp$ collisions of about 1.8 fb, which is similar to that obtained in Pomeron-Pomeron processes. Besides, in $pPb$ collisions the cross sections have increased to about 0.6 pb, being comparable with the results of two-photon processes in $pAu$ collisions. Therefore, as the Rapidity Gap Survival Probability is an open question in high-energy Physics, an analysis for different values of this probability shows how competitive are the mechanisms in the LHC kinematical regime.

Estimate of the single diffractive heavy quark production in heavy ion collisions at the CERN-LHC

The single diffractive cross section for heavy quarks production is calculated in next-no-leading order (NLO) in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Such processes are expected to occur at the LHC. We start using the hard diffractive factorization formalism, taking into account the recent experimental parameterization for the Pomeron Structure Function (DPDF). Absorptive corrections are accounted by the multiple Pomeron contributions considering a gap survival probability, where its theoretical uncertainty for nuclear collisions is discussed. We estimate the diffractive ratios for single diffraction process in nuclear coherent/incoherent collisions at the LHC.

Diffractive quarkonium production in association with a photon at the LHC

The rates for diffractive quarkonium plus prompt-photon associated production at the LHC are estimated. The theoretical framework considered in the J/Psi (or Upsilon) production associated with a direct photon at the hadron collider is the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization formalism. The corresponding single diffractive cross section is computed based on the hard diffractive scattering factorization supplemented by absorptive corrections. Such processes are sensitive to the gluon content of the Pomeron at small Bjorken-x and they may also be a good place to test the different available mechanisms for quarkonium production at hadron colliders.

preprint2008arXiv

Diffractive Higgs boson photoproduction in peripheral collisions

An alternative process is proposed for the diffractive Higgs boson production in peripheral $pp$ collisions, exploring it through the photon-proton interaction by Double Pomeron Exchange. It is estimated the event rate of the diffractive Higgs production in central rapidity for Tevatron and LHC energies, being of the order of 1 fb, in agreement to the predictions from other diffractive processes. The results are confronted with those obtained from a similar approach of the Durham group.

Neutrino structure functions in the QCD dipole picture

In this contribution we present an exploratory QCD analysis of the neutrino structure functions in charged current DIS using the color dipole formalism. The corresponding dipole cross sections are taken from recent phenomenological and theoretical studies in deep inelastic inclusive production, including nuclear shadowing corrections. The theoretical predictions are compared to the available experimental results in the small-x region.

Dilepton low $p_T$ suppression as an evidence of the Color Glass Condensate

The dilepton production is investigated in proton-nucleus collisions in the forward region using the Color Glass Condensate approach. The transverse momentum distribution ($p_T$), more precisely the low $p_T$ region, where the saturation effects are expected to increase, is analyzed. The ratio between proton-nucleus and proton-proton differential cross section for RHIC and LHC energies is evaluated, showing the effects of saturation at small $p_T$, and presenting a Cronin type peak at moderate $p_T$. These features indicate the dilepton as a most suitable probe to study the properties of the saturated regime and the Cronin effect.

Aspects of the Unitarized Soft Multipomeron Approach in DIS and Diffraction

We study in detail the main features of the unitarized Regge model (CFKS), recently proposed to describe the small-$Q^2$ domain. It takes into account a two-component description with two types of unitarized contributions: one is the multiple pomeron exchange contribution, interacting with the large dipole configurations, and the other one consists of a unitarized dipole cross section, describing the interaction with the small size dipoles. We analyze the ratio between soft and hard pieces as a function of the virtuality, and also compare the resulting dipole cross section to that from the saturation model. Diffraction dissociation is also considered, showing the scaling violations in diffractive DIS and estimating the corresponding logarithmic slope.

Unitarity Corrections to the Proton Structure Functions through the Dipole Picture

We study the dipole picture for the description of the deep inelastic scattering, focusing on the structure functions which are driven directly by the gluon distribution. One performs estimates using the effective dipole cross section given by the Glauber-Mueller approach in QCD, which encodes the corrections due to the unitarity effects associated with the saturation phenomenon. We also address issues about frame invariance of the calculations when analysing the observables.

High Density QCD

The dynamics of high partonic density QCD is presented considering, in the double logarithm approximation, the parton recombination mechanism built in the AGL formalism, developed including unitarity corrections for the nucleon as well for nucleus. It is shown that these corrections are under theoretical control. The resulting non linear evolution equation is solved in the asymptotic regime, and a comprehensive phenomenology concerning Deep Inelastic Scattering like $F_2$, $F_L$, $F_2^c$. $\partial F_2/ \partial \ln Q^2$, $\partial F^A_2/ \partial \ln Q^2$, etc, is presented. The connection of our formalism with the DGLAP and BFKL dynamics, and with other perturbative (K) and non-perturbative (MV-JKLW) approaches is analised in detail. The phenomena of saturation due to shadowing corrections and the relevance of this effect in ion physics and heavy quark production is emphasized. The implications to e-RHIC, HERA-A, and LHC physics and some open questions are mentioned.

Non-perturbative gluons in diffractive photo-production of J/Psi

The modifications induced in the calculation of the cross section of the diffractive process gamma gamma -> J/Psi J/Psi when the gluon propagator is changed are analyzed. Instead of the usual perturbative gluon propagator, alternative forms obtained using non-perturbative methods like Dyson-Schwinger equations are used to consider in a more consistent way the contributions of the infrared region. The result shows a reduction in the differential cross-section for low momentum transfer once compared with the perturbative result, to be confirmed with future experimental results from TESLA.

Seeking the Shadowing in eA Processes

We consider the behavior of the slope of the nuclear structure function $F_2^A$ in the kinematic region which will be explored in the eA HERA collider. We demonstrate that, similarly to the nucleon case, a `turn over' is predicted in this observable. Moreover, we predict that the presence of the shadowing corrections implies that the maximum value of the slope is dependent of the number of nucleons A, differently from the DGLAP predictions. Our conclusion is that the measurement of this observable will allow to evidentiate the presence of the shadowing corrections.

The Color Evaporation Model in Diffractive $J/ψ$ Photoproduction

Our goal is the study of color effects on the $J/ψ$ and $D$ mesons production, as well as the study of their elastic production. We use the Color Evaporation Model (CEM), where a single factor takes into account the probability that the $c\bar{c}$ produced in a color octet state turns into a physical (colorless) quarkonium or continues as a color octet, producing open charm. The main result of this work, besides investigating the range of applicability of the CEM, is to show that this model can be used to describe the elastic processes of $J/ψ$ and open charm photoproduction without the use of a Pomeron.

The small $x$ nuclear shadowing at DIS

We estimate the perturbative nuclear shadowing in the nuclear structure function $F_2^A(x,Q^2)$, mainly at the kinematic region of HERA using the Glauber-Mueller approach. The contributions of the quark and gluon sectors to the nuclear shadowing are estimated. We predict that the nuclear shadowing corrections are important and that saturation of the ratio $R_1 = F_2^{A}(x,Q^2)/A F^p_2(x,Q^2)$ occurs once the shadowing in the gluon sector is considered.

On the Determination of Small x Shadowing Corrections at HERA

The recent $F_2$ data can be described using the DGLAP evolution equations with an appropriate choice of input distributions and the choice of the starting scale for the $Q^2$ evolution. We demonstrate in this paper that we cannot conclude that there are no significant shadowing corrections at HERA kinematic region using $F_2$ data only. In this paper we calculate the shadowing corrections to the longitudinal structure function $F_L(x,Q^2)$ and to the charm component of the proton structure function $F_2^c(x,Q^2)$ at HERA kinematic region using an eikonal approach. We demonstrate that the shadowing corrections to these observables are very large and that the charm production is strongly modified at small-$x$. Our results agree with the recent few H1 data.

Parton Densities in a Nucleon

In this paper we re-analyse the situation with the shadowing corrections (SC) in QCD for the proton deep inelastic structure functions. We reconsider the Glauber - Mueller approach for the SC in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and suggest a new nonlinear evolution equation. We argue that this equation solves the problem of the SC in the wide kinematic region where $\as κ= \as \frac{3 π\as}{2 Q^2R^2} x G(x,Q^2) \leq 1$. Using the new equation we estimate the value of the SC which turn out to be essential in the gluon deep inelastic structure function but rather small in $F_2(x,Q^2)$. We claim that the SC in $xG(x,Q^2)$ is so large that the BFKL Pomeron is hidden under the SC and cannot be seen even in such "hard" processes that have been proposed to test it. We found that the gluon density is proportional to $\ln(1/x)$ in the region of very small $x$. This result means that the gluon density does not reach saturation in the region of applicability of the new evolution equation. It should be confronted with the solution of the GLR equation which leads to saturation.

preprint1997arXiv

Scaling violation and shadowing corrections at HERA

We study the value of shadowing corrections (SC) in HERA kinematic region in Glauber - Mueller approach. Since the Glauber - Mueller approach was proven in perturbative QCD in the double logarithmic approximation (DLA), we develop the DLA approach for deep inelastic structure function which takes into account the SC. Our estimates show small SC for $F_2$ in HERA kinematic region while they turn out to be sizable for the gluon structure function. We compare our estimates with those for gluon distribution in leading order (LO) and next to leading order (NLO) in the DGLAP evolution equations.

Analysis of Low-$x$ Gluon Density from the $F_2$ Scaling Violations

We present an analysis of the current methods of approximate determination of the gluon density $G(x,Q^2)$ at low-$x$ from the scaling violations of the proton structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$. The gluon density is obtained from DGLAP equation by expansion at distinct points of expansion. We show that the different results given by the proposed methods can be obtained from one new expression considering the adequate points of expansion. It is shown in which case the approximate determination of $G(x,Q^2)$ is reasonable.
