Magnetic structure and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the S=1/2S = 1/2 helical-honeycomb antiferromagnet αα-Cu2_{2}V2_{2}O7_{7}

Magnetic properties of the S=1/2S = 1/2 antiferromagnet αα-Cu2_{2}V2_{2}O7_{7} have been studied using magnetization, Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, and neutron diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility shows a broad peak at ∼50\sim50~K followed by an abrupt increase indicative of a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state at TNT_{N} = 33.4(1) K. Above TNT_N, a fit to the Curie-Weiss law gives a Curie-Weiss temperature of Θ=−73(1)Θ=-73(1)~K suggesting the dominant antiferromagnetic coupling. The result of the QMC calculations on the helical-honeycomb spin network with two antiferromagnetic exchange interactions J1J_1 and J2J_2 provides a better fit to the susceptibility than the previously proposed spin-chain model. Two sets of the coupling parameters J1:J2=1:0.45J_1:J_2=1:0.45 with J1=5.79(1)J_1=5.79(1)~meV and 0.65:10.65:1 with J2=6.31(1)J_2=6.31(1)~meV yield equally good fits down to ∼TN\sim T_N. Below TNT_{N}, weak ferromagnetism due to spin canting is observed. The canting is caused by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with an estimated bcbc-plane component ∣Dp∣\left|D_p\right| ≃0.14J1\simeq0.14J_1. Neutron diffraction reveals that the S=1/2S=1/2 Cu2+^{2+} spins antiferromagnetically align in the Fd′d′2Fd'd'2 magnetic space group. The ordered moment of 0.93(9)~μBμ_B is predominantly along the crystallographic aa-axis.

FeCr2_2S4_4 in magnetic fields: possible evidence for a multiferroic ground state

We report on neutron diffraction, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, dielectric, and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline FeCr2S4 in external magnetic fields. The ferrimagnetic ordering temperatures TC≈170T_{\mathrm{C}}\approx 170 K and the transition at TOO≈10T_{\mathrm{OO}}\approx 10 K, which has been associated with orbital ordering, are only weakly shifted in magnetic fields up to 9 T. The cubic lattice parameter is found to decrease when entering the state below TOOT_{\mathrm{OO}}. The magnetic moments of the Cr- and Fe-ions are reduced from the spin-only values throughout the magnetically ordered regime, but approach the spin-only values for fields >>5.5 T. Thermal expansion in magnetic fields and magnetostriction experiments indicate a contraction of the sample below about 60 K. Below TOOT_{\mathrm{OO}} this contraction is followed by a moderate expansion of the sample for fields larger than ∼\sim4.5 T. The transition at TOOT_{\mathrm{OO}} is accompanied by an anomaly in the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant depends on both the strength and orientation of the external magnetic field with respect to the applied electric field for T<TOOT<T_{\mathrm{OO}}. A linear correlation of the magnetic-field-induced change of the dielectric constant and the magnetic-field dependent magnetization is observed. This behaviour is consistent with the existence of a ferroelectric polarization and a multiferroic ground state below 10 K.

Crystal Chemistry of Carbon-Substituted MgB2

Neutron powder diffraction has been used to characterize a sample of C-substituted MgB2 synthesized from Mg and B4C (with isotopically enriched 11B). The sample is multiphase, with the major phase [73.4(1) wt.%] being Mg(B1-xCx)2 with x=0.10(2). Minor phases include MgB2C2, Mg, and MgO. The major Mg(B1-xCx)2 phase displays diffraction peak widths as sharp as for pure MgB2, indicating good C homogeneity. There is no evidence for ordering of the substituted C atoms or distortion of the host structure other than contraction of the a axis and slight expansion of the c axis. The observed changes in lattice parameters vs. C concentration provide a means for estimating the C concentration in other Mg(B1-xCx)2 samples. The reduction in Tc resulting from 10% C substitution is much larger than previously reported, suggesting that previous reports of the C concentration in Mg(B1-xCx)2 are overestimated. The Mg site occupancy is determined to be 0.990(4) which is consistent with full Mg occupancy. Given these results, the stoichiometry Mg(B0.9C0.1)2 should be used by future attempts (band structural or otherwise) to explain (i) the dramatic suppression of Tc (Tc ~ = 22 K) and (ii) the persistence of the two-superconducting-gap feature in the specific heat data.
