Importance of site occupancy and absence of strain glassy phase in Ni2−x_{2-x}Fex_{x}Mn1.5_{1.5}In0.5_{0.5}

Martensitic transition temperature steadily decreases in Ni2−x_{2-x}Fex_{x}Mn1.5_{1.5}In0.5_{0.5} and is completely suppressed at xx = 0.2. Despite suppression of martensitic transition, Ni1.8_{1.8}Fe0.2_{0.2}Mn1.5_{1.5}In0.5_{0.5} does not display the expected strain glassy phase. Instead, a ground state with dominant ferromagnetic interactions is observed. A study of structural and magnetic properties of xx = 0.2 reveal that the alloy consists of a major Fe rich cubic phase and a minor Fe deficient monoclinic phase favoring a ferromagnetic ground state. This is exactly opposite of that observed in Ni2_2Mn1−y_{1-y}Fey_{y}In0.5_{0.5} wherein a strain glassy phase is observed for yy = 0.1. The change in site symmetry of Fe when doped for Ni in contrast to Mn in the Heusler composition seems to support the growth of the ferromagnetic phase.

Effect of composition on magnetocaloric properties of Mn3 _{3} Ga(1−x) _{(1-x)} Snx _{x} C

A study investigating the effect of Sn substitution on the magnetocaloric properties of Mn3 _{3} Ga(1−x) _{(1-x)} Snx _{x} C compounds reveals that nature of the MCE has a strong dependence on the nature of the magnetic ordering. For small amounts of Sn (x≤0.2 x\leq0.2 ) the MCE is of the inverse type wherein an increase in the applied field beyond 5T gives rise to a table like temperature dependence of the entropy due to a coupling between the first order FM - AFM transition and the field induced AFM - FM transition. Replacement of Ga by larger concentrations of Sn (x≥0.71 x\geq0.71 ) (ΔSM)(ΔS_M) results in a change of the MCE to a conventional type with very little variation in the position of (ΔSM)max(ΔS_M)_{max} with increasing magnetic field. This has been explained to be due to the local strain introduced by A site ions (Ga/Sn) which affect the magnetostructural coupling in these compounds.

Effect of local structural distortions on magnetostructural transformation in Mn3_3SnC

In this paper we attempt to understand the different nature of first order magnetic transformation in Mn3_3SnC as compared to that in Mn3_3GaC. The transformation in Mn3_3SnC is close to room temperature (Tt≈_t \approx 280K) and is associated with a large change in magnetic entropy that makes it a suitable candidate for applications in ferroic cooling. Using a combination of x-ray and neutron diffraction and x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy we infer that the magnetic ground state consisting of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms is due to structural distortions present in Mn6_6C octahedra.

Residual stress induced stabilization of martensite phase and its effect on the magneto-structural transition in Mn rich Ni-Mn-In/Ga magnetic shape memory alloys

The irreversibility of the martensite transition in magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) with respect to external magnetic field is one of the biggest challenges that limits their application as giant caloric materials. This transition is a magneto-structural transition that is accompanied with a steep drop in magnetization (i.e., 'delta M') around the martensite start temperature (Ms) due to the lower magnetization of the martensite phase. In this communication, we show that 'delta M' around Ms in Mn rich Ni-Mn based MSMAs gets suppressed by two orders of magnitude in crushed powders due to the stabilization of the martensite phase at temperatures well above the Ms and the austenite finish (Af) temperatures due to residual stresses. Analysis of the intensities and the FWHM of the x-ray powder diffraction patterns reveals stabilized martensite phase fractions as 97, 75 and 90% with corresponding residual microstrains as 5.4, 5.6 and 3% in crushed powders of the three different Mn rich Ni-Mn alloys, namely, Mn1.8Ni1.8In0.4, Mn1.75Ni1.25Ga and Mn1.9Ni1.1Ga, respectively. Even after annealing at 773 K, the residual stress stabilised martensite phase does not fully revert to the equilibrium cubic austenite phase as the magneto-structural transition is only partially restored with reduced value of 'delta M'. Our results have very significant bearing on application of such alloys as inverse magnetocaloric and barocaloric materials.

Phase formation characteristics and magnetic properties of bulk Ni2MnGe Heusler alloy

We have systemically studied the effects of annealing temperature and alloy composition on the structural and magnetic properties of bulk Ni2_{2}MnGe and Ni2.1_{2.1}Mn0.9_{0.9}Ge Heusler alloys. We have observed that both annealing temperature and the alloy composition drastically alter the phases found in the samples due to the presence of competing ternary phases. Annealing at 900 and 950 ∘^{\circ}C for both alloy compositions facilitate the formation of L21_{1} Heusler phase. Nevertheless, formation of Ni5_{5}Mn4_{4}Ge3_{3} and Ni16_{16}Mn6_{6}Ge7_{7} phases cannot be prevented for Ni2_{2}MnGe and Ni2.1_{2.1}Mn0.9_{0.9}Ge alloys, respectively. In order to estimate the magnetic contribution of the Ni5_{5}Mn4_{4}Ge3_{3} impurity phase to that of the parent Ni2_{2}MnGe, we have also synthesized pure Ni5_{5}Mn4_{4}Ge3_{3} alloy. Antiferromagnetic nature of Ni5_{5}Mn4_{4}Ge3_{3} with low magnetization response allows us to reveal the magnetic response of the stoichiometric bulk Ni2_{2}MnGe. Bulk Ni2_{2}MnGe shows simple ferromagnetic behavior with a Curie temperature of 300 K, in agreement with the previous results on thin films. Despite the divergence of magnetization curves between field cooled (FC) and field heated (FH) modes, stoichiometric Ni2_{2}MnGe alloy does not undergo a martensitic phase transition based on our variable temperature x-ray diffraction experiments.

Anomalous vibrational effects in non-magnetic and magnetic Heusler alloys

First-principles calculations are used in order to investigate phonon anomalies in non-magnetic and magnetic Heusler alloys. Phonon dispersions for several systems in their cubic L21\mathrm{_1} structure were obtained along the [110] direction. We consider compounds which exhibit phonon instabilities and compare them with their stable counterparts. The analysis of the electronic structure allows us to identify the characteristic features leading to structural instabilities. The phonon dispersions of the unstable compounds show that, while the acoustic modes tend to soften, the optical modes disperse in a way which is significantly different from that of the stable structures. The optical modes that appear to disperse at anomalously low frequencies are Raman active, which is considered an indication of a stronger polarizability of the unstable systems. We show that phonon instability of the TA2_{2} mode in Heusler alloys is driven by interaction(repulsion) with the low energy optical vibrations. The optical modes show their unusual behavior due to covalent interactions which are additional bonding features incommensurate with the dominating metallicity in Heusler compounds.
