Weak B Decays into Orbitally Excited Charmed Mesons

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported branching fractions for semileptonic decays of the $B$ meson into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions within the framework of a constituent quark model in two steps, one which involves a semileptonic decay and the other one mediated by a strong process. Our results are in agreement with the experimental data.

Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization properties of asymmetric nuclear matter under a strong magnetic field

We study the effect of a strong magnetic field on the proton and neutron spin polarization and magnetic susceptibility of asymmetric nuclear matter within a relativistic mean-field approach. It is shown that magnetic fields $B \sim 10^{16} - 10^{17}$ G have already noticeable effects on the range of densities of interest for the study of the crust of a neutron star. Although the proton susceptibility is larger for weaker fields, the neutron susceptibility becomes of the same order or even larger for small proton fractions and subsaturation densities for $B > 10^{16}$ G. We expect that neutron superfluidity in the crust will be affected by the presence of magnetic fields.

Production of unstable heavy neutrinos in proto-neutron stars

We discuss the production of a class of heavy sterile neutrinos $ν_h$ in proto-neutron stars. The neutrinos, of mass around $50$ MeV, have a negligible mixing with the active species but relatively large dimension-5 electromagnetic couplings. In particular, a magnetic dipole moment $μ\approx 10^{-6}$ GeV$^{-1}$ implies that they are thermally produced through $e^+ e^-\to \bar ν_h ν_h$ in the early phase of the core collapse, whereas a heavy--light transition moment $μ_{\rm tr}\approx 10^{-8}$ GeV$^{-1}$ allows their decay $ν_h\to ν_i γ$ with a lifetime around $10^{-3}$ s. This type of electromagnetic couplings has been recently proposed to explain the excess of electron-like events in baseline experiments. We show that the production and decay of these heavy neutrinos would transport energy from the central regions of the star to distances $d\approx 400$ km, providing a very efficient mechanism to enhance the supernova shock front and heat the material behind it.

Semileptonic $B$ and $B_{s}$ decays into orbitally excited charmed mesons

The BaBar Collaboration has recently reported products of branching fractions that include $B$ meson semileptonic decays into final states with charged and neutral $D_{1}(2420)$ and $D_{2}^{\ast}(2460)$, two narrow orbitally excited charmed mesons. We evaluate these branching fractions, together with those concerning $D_{0}^{\ast}(2400)$ and $D_{1}'(2430)$ mesons, within the framework of a constituent quark model. The calculation is performed in two steps, one of which involves a semileptonic decay and the other is mediated by a strong process. Our results are in agreement with the experimental data. We also extend the study to semileptonic decays of $B_{s}$ into orbitally excited charmed-strange mesons, providing predictions to the possible measurements to be carried out at LHC.

Dynamical response of the nuclear pasta in neutron star crusts

The nuclear pasta -- a novel state of matter having nucleons arranged in a variety of complex shapes -- is expected to be found in the crust of neutron stars and in core-collapse supernovae at subnuclear densities of about $10^{14}$ g/cm$^3$. Due to frustration, a phenomenon that emerges from the competition between short-range nuclear attraction and long-range Coulomb repulsion, the nuclear pasta displays a preponderance of unique low-energy excitations. These excitations could have a strong impact on many transport properties, such as neutrino propagation through stellar environments. The excitation spectrum of the nuclear pasta is computed via a molecular-dynamics simulation involving up to 100,000 nucleons. The dynamic response of the pasta displays a classical plasma oscillation in the 1-2 MeV region. In addition, substantial strength is found at low energies. Yet this low-energy strength is missing from a simple ion model containing a single-representative heavy nucleus. The low-energy strength observed in the dynamic response of the pasta is likely to be a density wave involving the internal degrees of freedom of the clusters.
