Spectral Geometry of Nuts and Bolts

We study the spectrum of Laplace operators on a one-parameter family of gravitational instantons of bi-axial Bianchi IX type coupled to an abelian connection with self-dual curvature. The family of geometries includes the Taub-NUT, Taub-bolt and Euclidean Schwarzschild geometries and interpolates between them. The interpolating geometries have conical singularities along a submanifold of co-dimension two, but we prove that the associated Laplace operators have natural self-adjoint extensions and study their spectra. In particular, we determine the essential spectrum and prove that its complement, the discrete spectrum, is infinite. We compute these eigenvalues numerically and compare the numerical results with an analytical approximation derived from the asymptotic Taub-NUT form of each of the geometries in our family.

Sharp eigenvalue enclosures for the perturbed angular Kerr-Newman Dirac operator

A certified strategy for determining sharp intervals of enclosure for the eigenvalues of matrix differential operators with singular coefficients is examined. The strategy relies on computing the second order spectrum relative to subspaces of continuous piecewise linear functions. For smooth perturbations of the angular Kerr-Newman Dirac operator, explicit rates of convergence due to regularity of the eigenfunctions are established. Existing benchmarks are validated and sharpened by several orders of magnitude in the unperturbed setting.

Basis properties of the p,q-sine functions

We improve the currently known thresholds for basisness of the family of periodically dilated p,q-sine functions. Our findings rely on a Beurling decomposition of the corresponding change of coordinates in terms of shift operators of infinite multiplicity. We also determine refined bounds on the Riesz constant associated to this family. These results seal mathematical gaps in the existing literature on the subject.

Eigenvalue enclosures

This paper is concerned with methods for numerical computation of eigenvalue enclosures. We examine in close detail the equivalence between an extension of the Lehmann-Maehly-Goerisch method developed a few years ago by Zimmermann and Mertins, and a geometrically motivated method developed more recently by Davies and Plum. We extend various previously known results in the theory and establish explicit convergence estimates in both settings. The theoretical results are supported by two benchmark numerical experiments on the isotropic Maxwell eigenvalue problem.

Finite element eigenvalue enclosures for the Maxwell operator

We propose employing the extension of the Lehmann-Maehly-Goerisch method developed by Zimmermann and Mertins, as a highly effective tool for the pollution-free finite element computation of the eigenfrequencies of the resonant cavity problem on a bounded region. This method gives complementary bounds for the eigenfrequencies which are adjacent to a given real parameter. We present a concrete numerical scheme which provides certified enclosures in a suitable asymptotic regime. We illustrate the applicability of this scheme by means of some numerical experiments on benchmark data using Lagrange elements and unstructured meshes.

On the convergence of the quadratic method

The convergence of the so-called quadratic method for computing eigenvalue enclosures of general self-adjoint operators is examined. Explicit asymptotic bounds for convergence to isolated eigenvalues are found. These bounds turn out to improve significantly upon those determined in previous investigations. The theory is illustrated by means of several numerical experiments performed on particularly simple benchmark models of one-dimensional Schrodinger operators.

Approximation properties of the $q$-sine bases

For $q>12/11$ the eigenfunctions of the non-linear eigenvalue problem associated to the one-dimensional $q$-Laplacian are known to form a Riesz basis of $L^2(0,1)$. We examine in this paper the approximation properties of this family of functions and its dual, in order to establish non-orthogonal spectral methods for the $p$-Poisson boundary value problem and its corresponding parabolic time evolution initial value problem. The principal objective of our analysis is the determination of optimal values of $q$ for which the best approximation is achieved for a given $p$ problem.

Eigenvalue enclosures and convergence for the linearized MHD operator

We discuss how to compute certified enclosures for the eigenvalues of benchmark linear magnetohydrodynamics operators in the plane slab and cylindrical pinch configurations. For the plane slab, our method relies upon the formulation of an eigenvalue problem associated to the Schur complement, leading to highly accurate upper bounds for the eigenvalue. For the cylindrical configuration, a direct application of this formulation is possible, however, it cannot be rigourously justified. Therefore in this case we rely on a specialized technique based on a method proposed by Zimmermann and Mertins. In turns this technique is also applicable for finding accurate complementary bounds in the case of the plane slab. We establish convergence rates for both approaches.

Generalised Weyl theorems and spectral pollution in the Galerkin method

We consider a general framework for investigating spectral pollution in the Galerkin method. We show how this phenomenon is characterised via the existence of particular Weyl sequences which are singular in a suitable sense. For a semi-bounded selfadjoint operator A we identify relative compactness conditions on a selfadjoint perturbation B ensuring that the limiting set of spectral pollution of A and B coincide. Our results show that, under perturbation, this limiting set behaves in a similar fashion as the essential spectrum.

On the stability of a forward-backward heat equation

In this paper we examine spectral properties of a family of periodic singular Sturm-Liouville problems which are highly non-self-adjoint but have purely real spectrum. The problem originated from the study of the lubrication approximation of a viscous fluid film in the inner surface of a rotating cylinder and has received a substantial amount of attention in recent years. Our main focus will be the determination of Schatten class inclusions for the resolvent operator and regularity properties of the associated evolution equation.

Spectral properties in supersymmetric matrix models

We formulate a general sufficiency criterion for discreteness of the spectrum of both supersymmmetric and non-su-persymmetric theories with a fermionic contribution. This criterion allows an analysis of Hamiltonians in complete form rather than just their semiclassical limits. In such a framework we examine spectral properties of various (1+0) matrix models. We consider the BMN model of M-theory compactified on a maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background, different regularizations of the supermembrane with central charges and a non-supersymmetric model comprising a bound state of N D2 with m D0. While the first two examples have a purely discrete spectrum, the latter has a continuous spectrum with a lower end given in terms of the monopole charge.

On the convergence of second order spectra and multiplicity

Let A be a self-adjoint operator acting on a Hilbert space. The notion of second order spectrum of A relative to a given finite-dimensional subspace L has been studied recently in connection with the phenomenon of spectral pollution in the Galerkin method. We establish in this paper a general framework allowing us to determine how the second order spectrum encodes precise information about the multiplicity of the isolated eigenvalues of A. Our theoretical findings are supported by various numerical experiments on the computation of inclusions for eigenvalues of benchmark differential operators via finite element bases.

The heat kernel of the compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial winding

We study the quantization of the regularized hamiltonian, $H$, of the compactified D=11 supermembrane with non-trivial winding. By showing that $H$ is a relatively small perturbation of the bosonic hamiltonian, we construct a Dyson series for the heat kernel of $H$ and prove its convergence in the topology of the von Neumann-Schatten classes so that $e^{-Ht}$ is ensured to be of finite trace. The results provided have a natural interpretation in terms of the quantum mechanical model associated to regularizations of compactified supermembranes. In this direction, we discuss the validity of the Feynman path integral description of the heat kernel for D=11 supermembranes and obtain a matrix Feynman-Kac formula.

Finite lifetime eigenfunctions of coupled systems of harmonic oscillators

We find a Hermite-type basis for which the eigenvalue problem associated to the operator $H_{A,B}:=B(-\partial_x^2)+Ax^2$ acting on $L^2({\bf R};{\bf C}^2)$ becomes a three-terms recurrence. Here $A$ and $B$ are two constant positive definite matrices with no other restriction. Our main result provides an explicit characterization of the eigenvectors of $H_{A,B}$ that lie in the span of the first four elements of this basis when $AB\not= BA$.
