Holder estimates for kinetic Fokker-Planck equations up to the boundary

We obtain local Holder continuity estimates up to the boundary for a kinetic Fokker-Planck equation with rough coefficients, with the prescribed influx boundary condition. Our result extends some recent developments that incorporate De Giorgi methods to kinetic Fokker-Planck equations. We also obtain higher order asymptotic estimates near the incoming part of the boundary. In particular, when the equation has a zero boundary conditions and no source term, we prove that the solution vanishes at infinite order on the incoming part of the boundary.

Solutions to the non-cutoff Boltzmann equation uniformly near a Maxwellian

The purpose of this paper is to show how the combination of the well-known results for convergence to equilibrium and conditional regularity, in addition to a short-time existence result, lead to a quick proof of the existence of global smooth solutions for the non cutoff Boltzmann equation when the initial data is close to equilibrium. We include a short-time existence result for polynomially-weighted $L^\infty$ initial data. From this, we deduce that if the initial data is sufficiently close to a Maxwellian in this norm, then a smooth solution exists globally in time.

Gaussian lower bounds for the Boltzmann equation without cut-off

The study of positivity of solutions to the Boltzmann equation goes back to Carleman (1933), and the initial argument of Carleman was developed byPulvirenti-Wennberg (1997), the second author and Briant (2015). The appearance of a lower bound with Gaussian decay had however remained an open question for long-range interactions (the so-called non-cutoff collision kernels). We answer this question and establish such Gaussian lower bound for solutions to the Boltzmann equation without cutoff, in the case of hard and moderately soft potentials, with spatial periodic conditions, and under the sole assumption that hydrodynamic quantities (local mass, local energy and local entropy density) remain bounded. The paper is mostly self-contained, apart from the uniform upper bound on the solution established by the third author (2016).

The Schauder estimate for kinetic integral equations

We establish interior Schauder estimates for kinetic equations with integro-differential diffusion. We study equations of the form $f_t + v \cdot \nabla_x f = \mathcal L_v f + c$, where $\mathcal L_v$ is an integro-differential diffusion operator of order $2s$ acting in the $v$-variable. Under suitable ellipticity and Hölder continuity conditions on the kernel of $\mathcal L_v$, we obtain an a priori estimate for $f$ in a properly scaled Hölder space.

Hölder gradient estimates for a class of singular or degenerate parabolic equations

We prove interior Hölder estimate for the spatial gradients of the viscosity solutions to the singular or degenerate parabolic equation $$ u_t=|\nabla u|^κ\mbox{div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), $$ where $p\in (1,\infty)$ and $κ\in (1-p,\infty).$ This includes the from $L^\infty$ to $C^{1,α}$ regularity for parabolic $p$-Laplacian equations in both divergence form with $κ=0$, and non-divergence form with $κ=2-p$. This work is a continuation of a paper by the last two authors \cite{JS}.

Hölder gradient estimates for parabolic homogeneous p-Laplacian equations

We prove interior Hölder estimates for the spatial gradient of viscosity solutions to the parabolic homogeneous $p$-Laplacian equation \[ u_t=|\nabla u|^{2-p} \mbox{ div} (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u), \] where $1<p<\infty$. This equation arises from tug-of-war-like stochastic games with noise. It can also be considered as the parabolic $p$-Laplacian equation in non divergence form.

Upper bounds for parabolic equations and the Landau equation

We consider a parabolic equation in nondivergence form, defined in the full space $[0,\infty) \times \mathbb R^d$, with a power nonlinearity as the right hand side. We obtain an upper bound for the solution in terms of a weighted control in $L^p$. This upper bound is applied to the homogeneous Landau equation with moderately soft potentials. We obtain an estimate in $L^\infty(\mathbb R^d)$ for the solution of the Landau equation, for positive time, which depends only on the mass, energy and entropy of the initial data.

Uniqueness of radial solutions for the fractional Laplacian

We prove general uniqueness results for radial solutions of linear and nonlinear equations involving the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ with $s \in (0,1)$ for any space dimensions $N \geq 1$. By extending a monotonicity formula found by Cabre and Sire \cite{CaSi-10}, we show that the linear equation $(-Δ)^s u+ Vu = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ has at most one radial and bounded solution vanishing at infinity, provided that the potential $V$ is a radial and non-decreasing. In particular, this result implies that all radial eigenvalues of the corresponding fractional Schrödinger operator $H=(-Δ)^s + V$ are simple. Furthermore, by combining these findings on linear equations with topological bounds for a related problem on the upper half-space $\mathbb{R}^{N+1}_+$, we show uniqueness and nondegeneracy of ground state solutions for the nonlinear equation $(-Δ)^s Q + Q - |Q|^α Q = 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for arbitrary space dimensions $N \geq 1$ and all admissible exponents $α>0$. This generalizes the nondegeneracy and uniqueness result for dimension N=1 recently obtained by the first two authors in \cite{FrLe-10} and, in particular, the uniqueness result for solitary waves of the Benjamin--Ono equation found by Amick and Toland \cite{AmTo-91}.

On a transport equation with nonlocal drift

In \cite{CordobaCordobaFontelos05}, Córdoba, Córdoba, and Fontelos proved that for some initial data, the following nonlocal-drift variant of the 1D Burgers equation does not have global classical solutions \[ \partial_t θ+u \; \partial_x θ= 0, \qquad u = H θ, \] where $H$ is the Hilbert transform. We provide four essentially different proofs of this fact. Moreover, we study possible Hölder regularization effects of this equation and its consequences to the equation with diffusion \[ \partial_t θ+ u \; \partial_x θ+ Λ^γθ= 0, \qquad u = H θ, \] where $Λ= (-Δ)^{1/2}$, and $1/2 \leq γ<1$. Our results also apply to the model with velocity field $u = Λ^s H θ$, where $s \in (-1,1)$. We conjecture that solutions which arise as limits from vanishing viscosity approximations are bounded in the Hölder class in $C^{(s+1)/2}$, for all positive time.

On Landis' conjecture in the plane

In this paper we prove a quantitative form of Landis' conjecture in the plane. Precisely, let $W(z)$ be a measurable real vector-valued function and $V(z)\ge 0$ be a real measurable scalar function, satisfying $\|W\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le 1$ and $\|V\|_{L^{\infty}({\mathbf R}^2)}\le 1$. Let $u$ be a real solution of $Δu-\nabla(Wu)-Vu=0$ in ${\mathbf R}^2$. Assume that $u(0)=1$ and $|u(z)|\le\exp(C_0|z|)$. Then $u$ satisfies $\underset{|z_0|=R}{\inf}\,\underset{|z-z_0|<1}{\sup}|u(z)|\ge \exp(-CR\log R)$, where $C$ depends on $C_0$. In addition to the case of the whole plane, we also establish a quantitative form of Landis' conjecture defined in an exterior domain.

Regularity for parabolic integro-differential equations with very irregular kernels

We prove Hölder regularity for a general class of parabolic integro-differential equations, which (strictly) includes many previous results. We present a proof which avoids the use of a convex envelop as well as give a new covering argument which is better suited to the fractional order setting. Our main result involves a class of kernels which may contain a singular measure, may vanish at some points, and are not required to be symmetric. This new generality of integro-differential operators opens the door to further applications of the theory, including some regularization estimates for the Boltzmann equation.

Boundary regularity for viscosity solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We provide regularity results at the boundary for continuous viscosity solutions to nonconvex fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations and inequalities in Euclidian domains. We show that (i) any solution of two sided inequalities with Pucci extremal operators is $C^{1,α}$ on the boundary; (ii) the solution of the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations is $C^{2,α}$ on the boundary; (iii) corresponding asymptotic expansions hold. This is an extension to viscosity solutions of the classical Krylov estimates for smooth solutions.

Global well-posedness of slightly supercritical active scalar equations

The paper is devoted to the study of slightly supercritical active scalars with nonlocal diffusion. We prove global regularity for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) and Burgers equations, when the diffusion term is supercritical by a symbol with roughly logarithmic behavior at infinity. We show that the result is sharp for the Burgers equation. We also prove global regularity for a slightly supercritical two-dimensional Euler equation. Our main tool is a nonlocal maximum principle which controls a certain modulus of continuity of the solutions.

On the differentiability of the solution to an equation with drift and fractional diffusion

We consider an equation with drift and either critical or supercritical fractional diffusion. Under a regularity assumption for the vector field that is marginally stronger than what is required for Holder continuity of the solutions, we prove that the solution becomes immediately differentiable with Holder continuous derivatives. Therefore, the solutions to the equation are classical.

On the loss of continuity for super-critical drift-diffusion equations

We show that there exist solutions of drift-diffusion equations in two dimensions with divergence-free super-critical drifts, that become discontinuous in finite time. We consider classical as well as fractional diffusion. However, in the case of classical diffusion and time-independent drifts we prove that solutions satisfy a modulus of continuity depending only on the local $L^1$ norm of the drift, which is a super-critical quantity.

Holder continuity for a drift-diffusion equation with pressure

We address the persistence of Hölder continuity for weak solutions of the linear drift-diffusion equation with nonlocal pressure \[ u_t + b \cdot \grad u - \lap u = \grad p,\qquad \grad\cdot u =0 \] on $[0,\infty) \times \R^{n}$, with $n \geq 2$. The drift velocity $b$ is assumed to be at the critical regularity level, with respect to the natural scaling of the equations. The proof draws on Campanato's characterization of Hölder spaces, and uses a maximum-principle-type argument by which we control the growth in time of certain local averages of $u$. We provide an estimate that does not depend on any local smallness condition on the vector field $b$, but only on scale invariant quantities.

Hölder continuity to Hamilton-Jacobi equations with superquadratic growth in the gradient and unbounded right-hand side

We show that solutions of time-dependent degenerate parabolic equations with super-quadratic growth in the gradient variable and possibly unbounded right-hand side are locally ${\mathcal C}^{0,α}$. Unlike the existing (and more involved) proofs for equations with bounded right-hand side, our arguments rely on constructions of sub- and supersolutions combined with improvement of oscillation techniques.

Holder estimates for advection fractional-diffusion equations

We analyse conditions for an evolution equation with a drift and fractional diffusion to have a Holder continuous solution. In case the diffusion is of order one or more, we obtain Holder estimates for the solution for any bounded drift. In the case when the diffusion is of order less than one, we require the drift to be a Holder continuous vector field in order to obtain the same type of regularity result.

Partial regularity of solutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations

We prove that a viscosity solution of a uniformly elliptic, fully nonlinear equation is $C^{2,α}$ on the compliment of a closed set of Hausdorff dimension at most $ε$ less than the dimension. The equation is assumed to be $C^1$, and the constant $ε> 0$ depends only on the dimension and the ellipticity constants. The argument combines the $W^{2,ε}$ estimates of Lin with a result of Savin on the $C^{2,α}$ regularity of viscosity solutions which are close to quadratic polynomials.

preprint2011arXiv

Unique continuation for fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We show that a viscosity solution of a uniformly elliptic, fully nonlinear equation which vanishes on an open set must be identically zero, provided that the equation is $C^{1,1}$. We do not assume that the nonlinearity is convex or concave, and thus \emph{a priori} $C^2$ estimates are unavailable. Nevertheless, we use the boundary Harnack inequality and a regularity result for solutions with small oscillations to prove that the solution must be smooth at an appropriate point on the boundary of the set on which it is assumed to vanish. This then permits us to conclude with an application of a classical unique continuation result for linear equations.

On Divergence-free Drifts

We investigate the validity and failure of Liouville theorems and Harnack inequalities for parabolic and elliptic operators with low regularity coefficients. We are particularly interested in operators of the form $\partial_t - Δ+b\cdot\nabla$ and $-Δ+b\cdot\nabla$ with a divergence-free drift $b$. We prove the Liouville theorem and Harnack inequality when $b\in L_\infty(BMO^{-1})$ resp. $b\in BMO^{-1}$ and provide a counterexample to such results demonstrating sharpness of our conditions on the drift. Our results generalize to divergence-form operators with an elliptic symmetric part and a BMO skew-symmetric part. We also prove the existence of a modulus of continuity for solutions to the elliptic problem in two dimensions, depending on the non-scale-invariant norm $\|b\|_{L_1}$. In three dimensions, on the other hand, bounded solutions with $L_1$ drifts may be discontinuous.

On the differentiability of the solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation with critical fractional diffusion

We prove that the Hamilton Jacobi equation for an arbitrary Hamiltonian $H$ (locally Lipschitz but not necessarily convex) and fractional diffusion of order one (critical) has classical $C^{1,α}$ solutions. The proof is achieved using a new Hölder estimate for solutions of advection diffusion equations of order one with bounded vector fields that are not necessarily divergence free.

The Dirichlet problem for the convex envelope

The Convex Envelope of a given function was recently characterized as the solution of a fully nonlinear Partial Differential Equation (PDE). In this article we study a modified problem: the Dirichlet problem for the underlying PDE. The main result is an optimal regularity result. Differentiability ($C^{1,α}$ regularity) of the boundary data implies the corresponding result for the solution in the interior, despite the fact that the solution need not be continuous up to the boundary. Secondary results are the characterization of the convex envelope as: (i) the value function of a stochastic control problem, and (ii) the optimal underestimator for a class of nonlinear elliptic PDEs.

Regularity theory for fully nonlinear integro-differential equations

We consider nonlinear integro-differential equations, like the ones that arise from stochastic control problems with purely jump Lèvy processes. We obtain a nonlocal version of the ABP estimate, Harnack inequality, and interior $C^{1,α}$ regularity for general fully nonlinear integro-differential equations. Our estimates remain uniform as the degree of the equation approaches two, so they can be seen as a natural extension of the regularity theory for elliptic partial differential equations.

An extension problem related to the fractional Laplacian

The operator square root of the Laplacian $(-\lap)^{1/2}$ can be obtained from the harmonic extension problem to the upper half space as the operator that maps the Dirichlet boundary condition to the Neumann condition. In this paper we obtain similar characterizations for general fractional powers of the Laplacian and other integro-differential operators. From those characterizations we derive some properties of these integro-differential equations from purely local arguments in the extension problems.

Regularity estimates for the solution and the free boundary to the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian

We use a characterization of the fractional Laplacian as a Dirichlet to Neumann operator for an appropriate differential equation to study its obstacle problem. We write an equivalent characterization as a thin obstacle problem. In this way we are able to apply local type arguments to obtain sharp regularity estimates for the solution and study the regularity of the free boundary.
