Ladder determinantal varieties and their symbolic blowups

In this article we show that the symbolic Rees algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is strongly $F$-regular. Furthermore, we prove that the symbolic associated graded algebra of a mixed ladder determinantal ideal is $F$-pure. The latter implies that mixed ladder determinantal rings are $F$-pure. We also show that ideals of the poset of minors of a generic matrix give rise to $F$-pure algebras with straightening law.

Bernstein's inequality and holonomicity for certain singular rings

In this manuscript we prove the Bernstein inequality and develop the theory of holonomic D-modules for rings of invariants of finite groups in characteristic zero, and for strongly F-regular finitely generated graded algebras with FFRT in prime characteristic. In each of these cases, the ring itself, its localizations, and its local cohomology modules are holonomic. We also show that holonomic D-modules, in this context, have finite length. We obtain these results using a more general version of Bernstein filtrations.

Frobenius methods in combinatorics

We survey results produced from the interaction between methods in prime characteristic and combinatorial commutative algebra. We showcase results for edge ideals, toric varieties, Stanley-Reisner rings, and initial ideals that were proven via Frobenius. We also discuss results for monomial ideals obtained using Frobenius-like maps. Finally, we present results for $F$-pure rings that were inspired by work done for Stanley-Reisner rings.

Bernstein-Sato functional equations, $V$-filtrations, and multiplier ideals of direct summands

This paper investigates the existence and properties of a Bernstein-Sato functional equation in nonregular settings. In particular, we construct $D$-modules in which such formal equations can be studied. The existence of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial for a direct summand of a polynomial over a field is proved in this context. It is observed that this polynomial can have zero as a root, or even positive roots. Moreover, a theory of $V$-filtrations is introduced for nonregular rings, and the existence of these objects is established for what we call differentially extensible summands. This family of rings includes toric, determinantal, and other invariant rings. This new theory is applied to the study of multiplier ideals and Hodge ideals of singular varieties. Finally, we extend known relations among the objects of interest in the smooth case to the setting of singular direct summands of polynomial rings.

$F$-thresholds and test ideals of Thom-Sebastiani type polynomials

We provide a formula for $F$-thresholds of a Thom-Sebastiani type polynomial over a perfect field of prime characteristic. This result extends the formula for the $F$-pure threshold of a diagonal hypersurface. We also compute the first test ideal of Thom-Sebastiani type polynomials. Finally, we apply our result to find hypersurfaces where the log canonical thresholds equals the $F$-pure thresholds for infinitely many prime numbers.

Connectedness of square-free Groebner Deformations

Let $I\subseteq S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be a homogeneous ideal equipped with a monomial order $<$. We show that if $\operatorname{in}_<(I)$ is a square-free monomial ideal, then $S/I$ and $S/\operatorname{in}_<(I)$ have the same connectedness dimension. We also show that graphs related to connectedness of these quotient rings have the same number of components. We also provide consequences regarding Lyubeznik numbers. We obtain these results by furthering the study of connectedness modulo a parameter in a local ring.

Nash blowups in prime characteristic

We initiate the study of Nash blowups in prime characteristic. First, we show that a normal variety is non-singular if and only if its Nash blowup is an isomorphism, extending a theorem by A. Nobile. We also study higher Nash blowups, as defined by T. Yasuda. Specifically, we give a characteristic-free proof of a higher version of Nobile's Theorem for quotient varieties and hypersurfaces. We also prove a weaker version for $F$-pure varieties.

$D$-modules, Bernstein-Sato polynomials and $F$-invariants of direct summands

We study the structure of $D$-modules over a ring $R$ which is a direct summand of a polynomial or a power series ring $S$ with coefficients over a field. We relate properties of $D$-modules over $R$ to $D$-modules over $S$. We show that the localization $R_f$ and the local cohomology module $H^i_I(R)$ have finite length as $D$-modules over $R$. Furthermore, we show the existence of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial for elements in $R$. In positive characteristic, we use this relation between $D$-modules over $R$ and $S$ to show that the set of $F$-jumping numbers of an ideal $I\subseteq R$ is contained in the set of $F$-jumping numbers of its extension in $S$. As a consequence, the $F$-jumping numbers of $I$ in $R$ form a discrete set of rational numbers. We also relate the Bernstein-Sato polynomial in $R$ with the $F$-thresholds and the $F$-jumping numbers in $R$.

Cohomological dimension, Lyubeznik numbers, and connectedness properties in mixed characteristic

We establish a "second vanishing theorem" for local cohomology modules over regular rings of unramified mixed characteristic, which relates the connectedness of the spectrum of a ring with the vanishing of local cohomology. Applying this, and new results on the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers, we further study connectedness properties of the spectra of a certain class of rings.

Graph Connectivity and Binomial Edge Ideals

We relate homological properties of a binomial edge ideal $\mathcal{J}_G$ to invariants that measure the connectivity of a simple graph $G$. Specifically, we show if $R/\mathcal{J}_G$ is a Cohen-Macaulay ring, then graph toughness of $G$ is exactly $\frac{1}{2}$. We also give an inequality between the depth of $R/\mathcal{J}_G$ and the vertex-connectivity of $G$. In addition, we study the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity, and the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of $R/\mathcal{J}_G$.

F-thresholds of graded rings

The a-invariant, the F-pure threshold, and the diagonal F-threshold are three important invariants of a graded K-algebra. Hirose, Watanabe, and Yoshida have conjectured relations among these invariants for strongly F-regular rings. In this article, we prove that these relations hold only assuming that the algebra is F-pure. In addition, we present an interpretation of the a-invariant for F-pure Gorenstein graded K-algebras in terms of regular sequences that preserve F-purity. This result is in the spirit of Bertini theorems for projective varieties. Moreover, we show connections with projective dimension, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, and Serre's condition $S_k$. We also present analogous results and questions in characteristic zero.

Frobenius Betti numbers and modules of finite projective dimension

Let $(R,\mathfrak{m},K)$ be a local ring, and let $M$ be an $R$-module of finite length. We study asymptotic invariants, $β^F_i(M,R),$ defined by twisting with Frobenius the free resolution of $M$. This family of invariants includes the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity ($e_{HK}(\mathfrak{m},R)=β^F_0(K,R)$). We discuss several properties of these numbers that resemble the behavior of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity. Furthermore, we study when the vanishing of $β^F_i(M,R)$ implies that $M$ has finite projective dimension. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the vanishing of $β^F_i(M,R)$ for one-dimensional rings. As a consequence of our methods, we give conditions for the non-existence of syzygies of finite length.

Lyubeznik numbers and injective dimension in mixed characteristic

We investigate the Lyubeznik numbers, and the injective dimension of local cohomology modules, of finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras. We prove that the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers and the standard ones agree locally for almost all reductions to positive characteristic. Additionally, we address an open question of Lyubeznik that asks whether the injective dimension of a local cohomology module over a regular ring is bounded above by the dimension of its support. Although we show that the answer is affirmative for several families of $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras, we also exhibit an example where this bound fails to hold. This example settles Lyubeznik's question, and illustrates one way that the behavior of local cohomology modules of regular rings of equal characteristic and of mixed characteristic can differ.

F-pure thresholds of homogeneous polynomials

In this article, we investigate F-pure thresholds of polynomials that are homogeneous under some N-grading, and have an isolated singularity at the origin. We characterize these invariants in terms of the base p expansion of the corresponding log canonical threshold. As an application, we are able to make precise some bounds on the difference between F-pure and log canonical thresholds established by Mustaţă and the fourth author. We also examine the set of primes for which the F-pure and log canonical threshold of a polynomial must differ. Moreover, we obtain results in special cases on the ACC conjecture for F-pure thresholds, and on the upper semi-continuity property for the F-pure threshold function.

On the Hyperhomology of the Small Gobelin in Codimension 2

Given a zero-dimensional Gorenstein algebra $\mathbb{B}$ and two syzygies between two elements $f_1,f_2\in\mathbb{B}$, one constructs a double complex of $\mathbb{B}$-modules, ${\cal G}_\mathbb{B},$ called the small Gobelin. We describe an inductive procedure to construct the even and odd hyperhomologies of this complex. For high degrees, the difference $\dim \mathbb{H}_{j+2}({\cal G}_\mathbb{B}) - \dim\mathbb{H}_j({\cal G}_\mathbb{B})$ is constant, but possibly with a different value for even and odd degrees. We describe two flags of ideals in $\mathbb{B}$ which codify the above differences of dimension. The motivation to study this double complex comes from understanding the tangency condition between a vector field and a complete intersection, and invariants constructed in the zero locus of the vector field $\hbox{Spec}(\mathbb{B})$.

Properties of Lyubeznik numbers under localization and polarization

We exhibit a global bound for the Lyubeznik numbers of a ring of prime characteristic. In addition, we show that for a monomial ideal, the Lyubeznik numbers of the quotient rings of its radical and its polarization are the same. Furthermore, we present examples that show striking behavior of the Lyubeznik numbers under localization. We also show related results for generalizations of the Lyubeznik numbers.

$F$-jumping and $F$-Jacobian ideals for hypersurfaces

We introduce two families of ideals, $F$-jumping ideals and $F$-Jacobian ideals, in order to study the singularities of hypersurfaces in positive characteristic. Both families are defined using the $D$-modules $M_α$ that were introduced by Blickle, Mustaţă and Smith. Using strong connections between $F$-jumping ideals and generalized test ideals, we give a characterization of $F$-jumping numbers for hypersurfaces. Furthermore, we give an algorithm that determines whether certain numbers are $F$-jumping numbers. In addition, we use $F$-Jacobian ideals to study intrinsic properties of the singularities of hypersurfaces. In particular, we give conditions for $F$-regularity. Moreover, $F$-Jacobian ideals behave similarly to Jacobian ideals of polynomials. Using techniques developed to study these two new families of ideals, we provide relations among test ideals, generalized test ideals, and generalized Lyubeznik numbers for hypersurfaces.

Associated primes of local cohomology of flat extensions with regular fibers and $Σ$-finite $D$-modules

In this article, we study the following question raised by Mel Hochster: let $(R,m,K)$ be a local ring and $S$ be a flat extension with regular closed fiber. Is $\cV(mS)\cap\Ass_S H^i_I(S)$ finite for every ideal $I\subset S$ and $i\in \NN?$ We prove that the answer is positive when $S$ is either a polynomial or a power series ring over $R$ and $\dim(R/I\cap R)\leq 1.$ In addition, we analyze when this question can be reduced to the case where $S$ is a power series ring over $R$. An important tool for our proof is the use of $Σ$-finite $D$-modules, which are not necessarily finitely generated as $D$-modules, but whose associated primes are finite. We give examples of this class of $D$-modules and applications to local cohomology.

Generalized Lyubeznik numbers

Given a local ring containing a field, we define and investigate a family of invariants that includes the Lyubeznik numbers, but that captures finer information. These "generalized Lyubeznik numbers" are defined as lengths of certain iterated local cohomology modules in a category of D-modules, and in order to define them, we develop the theory of a functor Lyubeznik utilized in proving that his original invariants are well defined. In particular, this functor gives an equivalence of categories with a category of D-modules. These new invariants are indicators of F-regularity and F-rationality in characteristic p>0, and have close connections with characteristic cycle multiplicities in characteristic zero. We compute the generalized Lyubeznik numbers associated to monomial ideals using interpretations as lengths in a category of straight modules, as well as provide examples of these invariants associated to certain determinantal ideals.

Lyubeznik numbers in mixed characteristic

This manuscript defines a new family of invariants, analogous to the Lyubeznik numbers, associated to any local ring whose residue field has prime characteristic. In particular, as their nomenclature suggests, these "Lyubeznik numbers in mixed characteristic" are defined for all local rings of mixed characteristic. Some properties similar to those in equal characteristic hold for these new invariants. Notably, the "highest" Lyubeznik number in mixed characteristic is a well-defined notion. Although the Lyubeznik numbers in mixed characteristic and their equal-characteristic counterparts are the same for certain local rings of equal characteristic p>0, we also provide an example where they differ.
