Bernstein's inequality and holonomicity for certain singular rings

In this manuscript we prove the Bernstein inequality and develop the theory of holonomic D-modules for rings of invariants of finite groups in characteristic zero, and for strongly F-regular finitely generated graded algebras with FFRT in prime characteristic. In each of these cases, the ring itself, its localizations, and its local cohomology modules are holonomic. We also show that holonomic D-modules, in this context, have finite length. We obtain these results using a more general version of Bernstein filtrations.

Bernstein-Sato functional equations, $V$-filtrations, and multiplier ideals of direct summands

This paper investigates the existence and properties of a Bernstein-Sato functional equation in nonregular settings. In particular, we construct $D$-modules in which such formal equations can be studied. The existence of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial for a direct summand of a polynomial over a field is proved in this context. It is observed that this polynomial can have zero as a root, or even positive roots. Moreover, a theory of $V$-filtrations is introduced for nonregular rings, and the existence of these objects is established for what we call differentially extensible summands. This family of rings includes toric, determinantal, and other invariant rings. This new theory is applied to the study of multiplier ideals and Hodge ideals of singular varieties. Finally, we extend known relations among the objects of interest in the smooth case to the setting of singular direct summands of polynomial rings.

Cohomological dimension, Lyubeznik numbers, and connectedness properties in mixed characteristic

We establish a "second vanishing theorem" for local cohomology modules over regular rings of unramified mixed characteristic, which relates the connectedness of the spectrum of a ring with the vanishing of local cohomology. Applying this, and new results on the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers, we further study connectedness properties of the spectra of a certain class of rings.

F-threshold functions: syzygy gap fractals and the two-variable homogeneous case

In this article we study F-pure thresholds (and, more generally, F-thresholds) of homogeneous polynomials in two variables over a field of characteristic p>0. Passing to a field extension, we factor such a polynomial into a product of powers of pairwise prime linear forms, and to this collection of linear forms we associate a special type of function called a syzygy gap fractal. We use this syzygy gap fractal to study, at once, the collection of all F-pure thresholds of all polynomials constructed with the same fixed linear forms. This allows us to describe the structure of the denominator of such an F-pure threshold, showing in particular that whenever the F-pure threshold differs from its expected value its denominator is a multiple of p. This answers a question of Schwede in the two-variable homogeneous case. In addition, our methods give an algorithm to compute F-pure thresholds of homogenous polynomials in two variables.

Lyubeznik numbers and injective dimension in mixed characteristic

We investigate the Lyubeznik numbers, and the injective dimension of local cohomology modules, of finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras. We prove that the mixed characteristic Lyubeznik numbers and the standard ones agree locally for almost all reductions to positive characteristic. Additionally, we address an open question of Lyubeznik that asks whether the injective dimension of a local cohomology module over a regular ring is bounded above by the dimension of its support. Although we show that the answer is affirmative for several families of $\mathbb{Z}$-algebras, we also exhibit an example where this bound fails to hold. This example settles Lyubeznik's question, and illustrates one way that the behavior of local cohomology modules of regular rings of equal characteristic and of mixed characteristic can differ.

F-pure thresholds of homogeneous polynomials

In this article, we investigate F-pure thresholds of polynomials that are homogeneous under some N-grading, and have an isolated singularity at the origin. We characterize these invariants in terms of the base p expansion of the corresponding log canonical threshold. As an application, we are able to make precise some bounds on the difference between F-pure and log canonical thresholds established by Mustaţă and the fourth author. We also examine the set of primes for which the F-pure and log canonical threshold of a polynomial must differ. Moreover, we obtain results in special cases on the ACC conjecture for F-pure thresholds, and on the upper semi-continuity property for the F-pure threshold function.

F-purity of hypersurfaces

In this note, we study F-purity of pairs, and show (as is the case with log canonicity) that F-purity is preserved at the F-pure threshold. We also characterize when F-purity is equivalent to sharp F-purity, an alternate notion of purity for pairs introduced in [Sch08]. These results on purity at the threshold generalize results appearing in [Har06, Sch08], and were expected to hold by many experts in the field. We conclude by extending results in [BMS09] on the set of all F-pure thresholds to the most general setting.

F-purity versus log canonicity for polynomials

In this article, we consider the conjectured relationship between F-purity and log canonicity for polynomials over the complex numbers. We associate to a collection M of n monomials a rational polytope P contained in [0,1]^n. Using P and the Newton polyhedron associated to M, we define a non-degeneracy condition under which log canonicity and dense F-pure type are equivalent for all linear combinations of the monomials in M. We also show that log canonicity corresponds to F-purity for very general polynomials. Our methods rely on showing that the F-pure and log canonical threshold agree for infinitely primes, and we accomplish this by comparing these thresholds with the thresholds associated to their monomial ideals.
