Prescription for finite oblique parameters SS and UU in extensions of the SM with mW≠mZcos⁡θWm_W \neq m_Z \cos{θ_W}

We consider extensions of the Standard Model with neutral scalars in multiplets of SU(2)SU(2) larger than doublets. When those scalars acquire vacuum expectation values, the resulting masses of the gauge bosons W±W^\pm and Z0Z^0 are not related by mW=mZcos⁡θWm_W = m_Z \cos{θ_W}. In those extensions of the Standard Model the oblique parameters SS and UU, when computed at the one-loop level, turn out to be either gauge-dependent or divergent. We show that one may eliminate this problem by modifying the Feynman rules of the Standard Model for some vertices containing the Higgs boson; the modifying factors are equal to 11 in the limit mW=mZcos⁡θWm_W = m_Z \cos{θ_W}. We give the result for SS in a model with arbitrary numbers of scalar SU(2)SU(2) triplets with weak hypercharges either 00 or 11.

Reproducing lepton mixing in a texture zero model

We note that the emerging features of lepton mixing can be reproduced if, with inverted neutrino mass ordering, both the smallest neutrino mass and the ττττ element of the neutrino mass matrix vanish. Then, the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle is less than maximal and the Dirac phase δδ is close to ππ. We derive the correlations among the mixing parameters and show that there is a large cancellation in the effective mass responsible for neutrinoless ββββ decay. Three simple seesaw models leading to our scenario are provided.

Non-vanishing Ue3U_{e3} and cos⁡2θ23\cos{2 θ_{23}} from a broken Z2Z_2 symmetry

It is shown that the neutrino mass matrices in the flavour basis yielding a vanishing Ue3U_{e3} are characterized by invariance under a class of Z2Z_2 symmetries. A specific Z2Z_2 in this class also leads to a maximal atmospheric mixing angle θ23θ_{23}. The breaking of that Z2Z_2 can be parameterized by two dimensionless quantities, $\e$ and $\e'$; the effects of $\e, \e' \neq 0$ are studied perturbatively and numerically. The induced value of $\ue3$ strongly depends on the neutrino mass hierarchy. We find that $\ue3$ is less than 0.07 for a normal mass hierarchy, even when $\e, \e' \sim 30 %$. For an inverted mass hierarchy $\ue3$ tends to be around 0.1 but can be as large as 0.17. In the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, $\ue3$ could be close to its experimental upper bound 0.2. In contrast, ∣cos⁡2θ23∣| \cos{2θ_{23}} | can always reach its experimental upper bound 0.28. We propose a specific model, based on electroweak radiative corrections in the MSSM, for $\e$ and $\e'$. In that model, both $\ue3$ and ∣cos⁡2θ23∣| \cos{2 θ_{23}} |, could be close to their respective experimental upper bounds if neutrinos are quasi-degenerate.
