Two Theorems on Flat Space-Time Gravitational Theories

The first theorem states that all flat space-time gravitational theories must have a Lagrangian with a first term that is an homogeneous (degree-I) function of the 4-velocity uiu^i, plus a functional of ηijuiujη_{ij}u^i u^j. The second theorem states that all gravitational theories that satisfy the strong equivalence principle have a Lagrangian with a first term gij(x)uiujg_{ij}(x)u^i u^j plus an irrelevant term. In both cases the theories must issue from a unique variational principle. Therefore, under this condition it is impossible to find a flat space-time theory that satisfies the strong equivalence principle.

Crossing the phantom divide with a classical Dirac field

In this paper we consider a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with cosmological constant, containing a stiff fluid and a classical Dirac field. The proposed cosmological scenario describes the evolution of effective dark matter and dark energy components reproducing, with the help of that effective multifluid configuration, the quintessential behavior. We find the value of the scale factor where the effective dark energy component crosses the phantom divide. The model we introduce, which can be considered as a modified ΛΛCDM one, is characterized by a set of parameters which may be constrained by the astrophysical observations available up to date.

k-essence in the DGP brane-world cosmology

We analyse a DGP brane filled with a k-essence field and assume the k-field evolving linearly with the cosmic time of the brane. We then solve analytically the Friedmann equation and deduce the different behaviour of the brane at the low and the high energy regimes. The asymptotic behaviour can be quite different involving accelerating branes, big bangs, big crunches, big rips or quiescent singularities. The latter correspond to a type of sudden singularity.
