Sigma-model solitons on noncommutative spaces

We use results from time-frequency analysis and Gabor analysis to construct new classes of sigma-model solitons over the Moyal plane and over noncommutative tori, taken as source spaces, with a target space made of two points. A natural action functional leads to self-duality equations for projections in the source algebra. Solutions, having non-trivial topological content, are constructed via suitable Morita duality bimodules.

The Standard Model in Noncommutative Geometry and Morita equivalence

We discuss some properties of the spectral triple $(A_F,H_F,D_F,J_F,γ_F)$ describing the internal space in the noncommutative geometry approach to the Standard Model, with $A_F=\mathbb{C}\oplus\mathbb{H}\oplus M_3(\mathbb{C})$. We show that, if we want $H_F$ to be a Morita equivalence bimodule between $A_F$ and the associated Clifford algebra, two terms must be added to the Dirac operator; we then study its relation with the orientability condition for a spectral triple. We also illustrate what changes if one considers a spectral triple with a degenerate representation, based on the complex algebra $B_F=\mathbb{C}\oplus M_2(\mathbb{C})\oplus M_3(\mathbb{C})$.

Equivariant Join and Fusion of Noncommutative Algebras

We translate the concept of the join of topological spaces to the language of $C^*$-algebras, replace the $C^*$-algebra of functions on the interval $[0,1]$ with evaluation maps at $0$ and $1$ by a unital $C^*$-algebra $C$ with appropriate two surjections, and introduce the notion of the fusion of unital $C^*$-algebras. An appropriate modification of this construction yields the fusion comodule algebra of a comodule algebra $P$ with the coacting Hopf algebra $H$. We prove that, if the comodule algebra $P$ is principal, then so is the fusion comodule algebra. When $C=C([0,1])$ and the two surjections are evaluation maps at $0$ and $1$, this result is a noncommutative-algebraic incarnation of the fact that, for a compact Hausdorff principal $G$-bundle $X$, the diagonal action of $G$ on the join $X*G$ is free.

Noncommutative Borsuk-Ulam-type conjectures

Within the framework of free actions of compact quantum groups on unital C*-algebras, we propose two conjectures. The first one states that, if $H$ is the C*-algebra of a compact quantum group coacting freely on a unital C*-algebra $A$, then there is no equivariant $*$-homomorphism from $A$ to the join C*-algebra $A*H$. For $A$ being the C*-algebra of continuous functions on a sphere with the antipodal coaction of the C*-algebra of funtions on $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, we recover the celebrated Borsuk-Ulam theorem. The second conjecture states that there is no equivariant $*$-homomorphism from $H$ to the join C*-algebra $A*H$. We show how to prove the conjecture in the special case $A=C(SU_q(2))=H$, which is tantamount to showing the non-trivializability of Pflaum's quantum instanton fibration built from $SU_q(2)$.

Braided join comodule algebras of Galois objects

We construct the join of noncommutative Galois objects (quantum torsors) over a Hopf algebra H. To ensure that the join algebra enjoys the natural (diagonal) coaction of H, we braid the tensor product of the Galois objects. Then we show that this coaction is principal. Our examples are built from the noncommutative torus with the natural free action of the classical torus, and arbitrary anti-Drinfeld doubles of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras. The former yields a noncommutative deformation of a non-trivial torus bundle, and the latter a finite quantum covering.

Dirac operators on noncommutative principal torus bundles

Spectral triples over noncommutative principal $\T^n$-bundles are studied, extending recent results about the noncommutative geometry of principal U(1)-bundles. We relate the noncommutative geometry of the total space of the bundle with the geometry of the base space. Moreover, strong connections are used to build new Dirac operators. We discuss as a particular case the commutative case, the noncommutative tori and theta deformed manifolds.

Quantum gauge symmetries in Noncommutative Geometry

We discuss generalizations of the notion of i) the group of unitary elements of a (real or complex) finite dimensional C*-algebra, ii) gauge transformations and iii) (real) automorphisms, in the framework of compact quantum group theory and spectral triples. The quantum analogue of these groups are defined as universal (initial) objects in some natural categories. After proving the existence of the universal objects, we discuss several examples that are of interest to physics, as they appear in the noncommutative geometry approach to particle physics: in particular, the C*-algebras M_n(R), M_n(C) and M_n(H), describing the finite noncommutative space of the Einstein-Yang-Mills systems, and the algebras A_F=C+H+M_3(C) and A^{ev}=H+H+M_4(C), that appear in Chamseddine-Connes derivation of the Standard Model of particle physics minimally coupled to gravity. As a byproduct, we identify a "free" version of the symplectic group Sp(n) (quaternionic unitary group).

Curved noncommutative torus and Gauss--Bonnet

We study perturbations of the flat geometry of the noncommutative two-dimensional torus T^2_θ(with irrational θ). They are described by spectral triples (A_θ, \H, D), with the Dirac operator D, which is a differential operator with coefficients in the commutant of the (smooth) algebra A_θof T_θ. We show, up to the second order in perturbation, that the zeta-function at 0 vanishes and so the Gauss-Bonnet theorem holds. We also calculate first two terms of the perturbative expansion of the corresponding local scalar curvature.

Dirac operator on spinors and diffeomorphisms

The issue of general covariance of spinors and related objects is reconsidered. Given an oriented manifold $M$, to each spin structure $σ$ and Riemannian metric $g$ there is associated a space $S_{σ, g}$ of spinor fields on $M$ and a Hilbert space $\HH_{σ, g}= L^2(S_{σ, g},\vol{M}{g})$ of $L^2$-spinors of $S_{σ, g}$. The group $\diff{M}$ of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$ acts both on $g$ (by pullback) and on $[σ]$ (by a suitably defined pullback $f^*σ$). Any $f\in \diff{M}$ lifts in exactly two ways to a unitary operator $U$ from $\HH_{σ, g} $ to $\HH_{f^*σ,f^*g}$. The canonically defined Dirac operator is shown to be equivariant with respect to the action of $U$, so in particular its spectrum is invariant under the diffeomorphisms.

Noncommutative circle bundles and new Dirac operators

We study spectral triples over noncommutative principal U(1) bundles. Basing on the classical situation and the abstract algebraic approach, we propose an operatorial definition for a connection and compatibility between the connection and the Dirac operator on the total space and on the base space of the bundle. We analyze in details the example of the noncommutative three-torus viewed as a U(1) bundle over the noncommutative two-torus and find all connections compatible with an admissible Dirac operator. Conversely, we find a family of new Dirac operators on the noncommutative tori, which arise from the base-space Dirac operator and a suitable connection.

Quantum Isometries of the finite noncommutative geometry of the Standard Model

We compute the quantum isometry group of the finite noncommutative geometry F describing the internal degrees of freedom in the Standard Model of particle physics. We show that this provides genuine quantum symmetries of the spectral triple corresponding to M x F where M is a compact spin manifold. We also prove that the bosonic and fermionic part of the spectral action are preserved by these symmetries.

Canonical k-Minkowski Spacetime

A complete classification of the regular representations of the relations [T,X_j] = (i/k)X_j, j=1,...,d, is given. The quantisation of RxR^d canonically (in the sense of Weyl) associated with the universal representation of the above relations is intrinsically "radial", this meaning that it only involves the time variable and the distance from the origin; angle variables remain classical. The time axis through the origin is a spectral singularity of the model: in the large scale limit it is topologically disjoint from the rest. The symbolic calculus is developed; in particular there is a trace functional on symbols. For suitable choices of states localised very close to the origin, the uncertainties of all spacetime coordinates can be made simultaneously small at wish. On the contrary, uncertainty relations become important at "large" distances: Planck scale effects should be visible at LHC energies, if processes are spread in a region of size 1mm (order of peak nominal beam size) around the origin of spacetime.

Lorentz Covariant k-Minkowski Spacetime

In recent years, different views on the interpretation of Lorentz covariance of non commuting coordinates were discussed. Here, by a general procedure, we construct the minimal canonical central covariantisation of the k-Minkowski spacetime. We then show that, though the usual k-Minkowski spacetime is covariant under deformed (or twisted) Lorentz action, the resulting framework is equivalent to taking a non covariant restriction of the covariantised model. We conclude with some general comments on the approach of deformed covariance.

The k-Minkowski Spacetime: Trace, Classical Limit and uncertainty Relations

Starting from a discussion of the concrete representations of the coordinates of the k-Minkowski spacetime (in 1+1 dimensions, for simplicity), we explicitly compute the associated Weyl operators as functions of a pair of Schroedinger operators. This allows for explicitly computing the trace of a quantised function of spacetime. Moreover, we show that in the classical (i.e. large scale) limit the origin of space is a topologically isolated point, so that the resulting classical spacetime is disconnected. Finally we show that there exist states with arbitrarily sharp simultaneous localisation in all the coordinates; in other words, an arbitrarily high energy density can be transferred to spacetime by means of localisation alone, which amounts to say that the model is not stable under localisation.

Quantum spin coverings and statistics

SL_q(2) at odd roots of unity q^l =1 is studied as a quantum cover of the complex rotation group SO(3,C), in terms of the associated Hopf algebras of (quantum) polynomial functions. We work out the irreducible corepresentations, the decomposition of their tensor products and a coquasitriangular structure, with the associated braiding (or statistics). As an example, the case l=3 is discussed in detail.
