Efficient yet Accurate Dispersion-Corrected Semilocal Exchange-Correlation Functionals For Non-Covalent Interactions

Due to several attractive features, the meta-generalized-gradient approximations (meta-GGAs) are considered to be the most advanced and potentially accurate semilocal exchange-correlation functionals in the rungs of the Jacob's ladder of Density Functional Theory. So far, several meta-GGA are proposed by fitting to the test sets or/and satisfying as many as known exact constraints. Although the density overlap is treated by modern meta-GGA functionals efficiently, for non-covalent interactions, a long-range dispersion correction is essential. In this work, we assess the benchmark performance of different variants of the Tao-Mo semilocal functional (i.e. TM of Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 073001 (2016) and revTM of J. Phys. Chem. A 123, 6356 (2019)) with Grimme's D3 correction for the several non-covalent interactions, including dispersion and hydrogen bonded systems. We consider the zero, Becke-Johnson(BJ), and optimized power (OP) damping functions within the D3 method, with both TM and revTM functionals. It is observed that the overall performance of the functionals gradually improved from zero to BJ and to OP damping. However, the constructed "OP" corrected (rev)TM+D3(OP) functionals perform considerably better compared to other well-known dispersion corrected functionals. Based on the accuracy of the proposed functionals, the future applicability of these methods is also discussed.

Relevance of coordinate and particle-number scaling in density functional theory

We discuss a $β$-dependent family of electronic density scalings of the form $n_λ(\R)=λ^{3β+1}\; n(λ^β\R)$ in the context of density functional theory. In particular, we consider the following special cases: the Thomas-Fermi scaling ($β=1/3$ and $λ\gg 1$), which is crucial for the semiclassical theory of neutral atoms; the uniform-electron-gas scaling ($β=-1/3$ and $λ\gg 1$), that is important in the semiclassical theory of metallic clusters; the homogeneous density scaling ($β=0$) which can be related to the self-interaction problem in density functional theory when $λ\leq 1$; the fractional scaling ($β=1$ and $λ\leq 1$), that is important for atom and molecule fragmentation; and the strong-correlation scaling ($β=-1$ and $λ\gg 1$) that is important to describe the strong correlation limit. The results of our work provide evidence for the importance of this family of scalings in semiclassical and quantum theory of electronic systems, and indicate that these scaling properties must be considered as important constraints in the construction of new approximate density functionals. We also show, using the uniform-electron-gas scaling, that the curvature energy of metallic clusters is related to the second-order gradient expansion of kinetic and exchange-correlation energies.

Optical spectra of solids obtained by time-dependent density-functional theory with the jellium-with-gap model exchange-correlation kernel

Within the framework of ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT), we propose a static approximation to the exchange-correlation kernel based on the jellium-with-gap model. This kernel accounts for electron-hole interactions and it is able to address both strongly bound excitons and weak excitonic effects. TD-DFT absorption spectra of several bulk materials (both semiconductor and insulators) are reproduced in very good agreement with the experiments and with a low computational cost.

Adiabatic-Connection-Fluctuation-Dissipation approach to the long-range behavior of the exchange-correlation energy at metal surfaces: A numerical study for jellium slabs

A still open issue in many-body theory is the asymptotic behavior of the exchange-correlation energy and potential in the vacuum region of a metal surface. Here we report a numerical study of the position-dependent exchange-correlation energy for jellium slabs, as obtained by combining the formally exact adiabatic-connection-fluctuation-dissipation theorem with either time-dependent density-functional theory or an inhomogeneous Singwi-Tosi-Land-Sjölander approach. We find that the inclusion of correlation allows to obtain well-converged semi-infinite-jellium results (independent of the slab thickness) that exhibit an image-like asymptotic behavior close to the classical image potential $V_{im}(z)=-e^2/4z$.

Ionization potentials in the limit of large atomic number

By extrapolating the energies of non-relativistic atoms and their ions with up to 3000 electrons within Kohn-Sham density functional theory, we find that the ionization potential remains finite and increases across a row, even as $Z\rightarrow\infty$. The local density approximation becomes chemically accurate (and possibly exact) in some cases. Extended Thomas-Fermi theory matches the shell-average of both the ionization potential and density change. Exact results are given in the limit of weak electron-electron repulsion.

Dimensional crossover of the exchange-correlation energy at the semilocal level

Commonly used semilocal density functional approximations for the exchange-correlation energy fail badly when the true two dimensional limit is approached. We show, using a quasi-two-dimensional uniform electron gas in the infinite barrier model, that the semilocal level can correctly recover the exchange-correlation energy of the two-dimensional uniform electron gas. We derive new exact constraints at the semilocal level for the dimensional crossover of the exchange-correlation energy and we propose a method to incorporate them in any exchange-correlation density functional approximation.

Kinetic energy density functionals from the Airy gas, with an application to the atomization kinetic energies of molecules

We construct and study several semilocal density functional approximations for the positive Kohn-Sham kinetic energy density. These functionals fit the kinetic energy density of the Airy gas and they can be accurate for integrated kinetic energies of atoms, molecules, jellium clusters and jellium surfaces. We find that these functionals are the most accurate ones for atomization kinetic energies of molecules and for fragmentation of jellium clusters. We also report that local and semilocal kinetic energy functionals can show "binding" when the density of a spin unrestricted Kohn-Sham calculation is used.

Laplacian-level density functionals for the kinetic energy density and exchange-correlation energy

We construct a Laplacian-level meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) for the non-interacting (Kohn-Sham orbital) positive kinetic energy density $τ$ of an electronic ground state of density $n$. This meta-GGA is designed to recover the fourth-order gradient expansion $τ^{GE4}$ in the appropiate slowly-varying limit and the von Weizsäcker expression $τ^{W}=|\nabla n|^2/(8n)$ in the rapidly-varying limit. It is constrained to satisfy the rigorous lower bound $τ^{W}(\mathbf{r})\leqτ(\mathbf{r})$. Our meta-GGA is typically a strong improvement over the gradient expansion of $τ$ for atoms, spherical jellium clusters, jellium surfaces, the Airy gas, Hooke's atom, one-electron Gaussian density, quasi-two dimensional electron gas, and nonuniformly-scaled hydrogen atom. We also construct a Laplacian-level meta-GGA for exchange and correlation by employing our approximate $τ$ in the Tao, Perdew, Staroverov and Scuseria (TPSS) meta-GGA density functional. The Laplacian-level TPSS gives almost the same exchange-correlation enhancement factors and energies as the full TPSS, suggesting that $τ$ and $\nabla^2 n$ carry about the same information beyond that carried by $n$ and $\nabla n$. Our kinetic energy density integrates to an orbital-free kinetic energy functional that is about as accurate as the fourth-order gradient expansion for many real densities (with noticeable improvement in molecular atomization energies), but considerably more accurate for rapidly-varying ones.
