Alpha states demystified: Towards microscopic models of AdS$_2$ holography

We continue our study of factorizing theories of dilaton gravity, characterized by a universal bilocal interaction. All such factorizing theories can be shown to have discrete spectra, distinguished only by their local dilaton potentials. We show how such theories can be used to construct all alpha-states in the Hilbert space of baby universes of ordinary JT gravity. Large classes of these theories with different local potentials are found to be non-perturbatively equivalent and have identical discrete spectra. This is a concrete example of how different bulk descriptions can give rise to the same boundary theory. Such equivalences manifest themselves as null states, which have to be quotiented out in order to construct a proper baby universe Hilbert space. Our results also allow us to revisit the mechanism discussed by Coleman, Giddings, and Strominger, and concretely link ensemble averaging to the appearance or disappearance of spacetime wormholes. We then investigate JT gravity deformed only by the universal bilocal interaction. In this theory, the only terms that do not cancel in a topological expansion are disks, which capture perturbative fluctuations around a two-dimensional black hole saddle. We find that this theory of black holes has an evenly spaced spectrum, instead of a quantum chaotic one. We present a dual quantum mechanical system with exactly the same discrete spectrum, and propose that this is an example of a new holographic duality between a two-dimensional theory of quantum gravity and a conventional quantum mechanics.

JT gravity at finite cutoff

We compute the partition function of $2D$ Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity at finite cutoff in two ways: (i) via an exact evaluation of the Wheeler-DeWitt wave-functional in radial quantization and (ii) through a direct computation of the Euclidean path integral. Both methods deal with Dirichlet boundary conditions for the metric and the dilaton. In the first approach, the radial wavefunctionals are found by reducing the constraint equations to two first order functional derivative equations that can be solved exactly, including factor ordering. In the second approach we perform the path integral exactly when summing over surfaces with disk topology, to all orders in perturbation theory in the cutoff. Both results precisely match the recently derived partition function in the Schwarzian theory deformed by an operator analogous to the $T\bar{T}$ deformation in $2D$ CFTs. This equality can be seen as concrete evidence for the proposed holographic interpretation of the $T\bar{T}$ deformation as the movement of the AdS boundary to a finite radial distance in the bulk.

An exact quantization of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

We propose an exact quantization of two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity by formulating the JT gravity theory as a 2D gauge theory placed in the presence of a loop defect. The gauge group is a certain central extension of $PSL(2, \mathbb{R})$ by $\mathbb{R}$. We find that the exact partition function of our theory when placed on a Euclidean disk matches precisely the finite temperature partition function of the Schwarzian theory. We show that observables on both sides are also precisely matched: correlation functions of boundary-anchored Wilson lines in the bulk are given by those of bi-local operators in the Schwarzian theory. In the gravitational context, the Wilson lines are shown to be equivalent to the world-lines of massive particles in the metric formulation of JT gravity.

Recursion relation for general 3d blocks

We derive closed-form expressions for all ingredients of the Zamolodchikov-like recursion relation for general spinning conformal blocks in 3-dimensional conformal field theory. This result opens a path to efficient automatic generation of conformal block tables, which has immediate applications in numerical conformal bootstrap program. Our derivation is based on an understanding of null states and conformally-invariant differential operators in momentum space, combined with a careful choice of the relevant tensor structures bases. This derivation generalizes straightforwardly to higher spacetime dimensions d, provided the relevant Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of Spin(d) are known.

Accidental Symmetries and the Conformal Bootstrap

We study an ${\cal N} = 2$ supersymmetric generalization of the three-dimensional critical $O(N)$ vector model that is described by $N+1$ chiral superfields with superpotential $W = g_1 X \sum_i Z_i^2 + g_2 X^3$. By combining the tools of the conformal bootstrap with results obtained through supersymmetric localization, we argue that this model exhibits a symmetry enhancement at the infrared superconformal fixed point due to $g_2$ flowing to zero. This example is special in that the existence of an infrared fixed point with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$, which does not exhibit symmetry enhancement, does not generally lead to any obvious unitarity violations or other inconsistencies. We do show, however, that the $F$-theorem excludes the models with $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ for $N>5$. The conformal bootstrap provides a stronger constraint and excludes such models for $N>2$. We provide evidence that the $g_2=0$ models, which have the enhanced $O(N)\times U(1)$ symmetry, come close to saturating the bootstrap bounds. We extend our analysis to fractional dimensions where we can motivate the nonexistence of the $g_1,g_2\neq 0$ models by studying them perturbatively in the $4-ε$ expansion.

Bootstrapping $O(N)$ Vector Models with Four Supercharges in $3 \leq d \leq4$

We analyze the conformal bootstrap constraints in theories with four supercharges and a global $O(N) \times U(1)$ flavor symmetry in $3 \leq d \leq 4$ dimensions. In particular, we consider the 4-point function of $O(N)$-fundamental chiral operators $Z_i$ that have no chiral primary in the $O(N)$-singlet sector of their OPE. We find features in our numerical bounds that nearly coincide with the theory of $N+1$ chiral super-fields with superpotential $W = X \sum_{i=1}^N Z_i^2$, as well as general bounds on SCFTs where $\sum_{i=1}^N Z_i^2$ vanishes in the chiral ring.
