Nonlinear Mid-infrared Metasurface based on a Phase-Change Material

The mid-wave infrared (MWIR) spectral region (3-5 μm) is important to a vast variety of applications in imaging, sensing, spectroscopy, surgery, and optical communications. Efficient third-harmonic generation (THG), converting light from the MWIR range into the near-infrared, a region with mature optical detection and manipulation technologies, offers the opportunity to mitigate a commonly recognized limitation of current MWIR systems. In this work, we present the possibility of boosting THG in the MWIR through a metasurface design. Specifically, we demonstrate a 30-fold enhancement in a highly nonlinear phase change material Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST), by patterning arrays of subwavelength cylinders supporting a magnetic dipolar resonance. The unprecedented broadband transparency, large refractive index, and remarkably high nonlinear response, together with unique phase-change properties, make GSST-based metasurfaces an appealing solution for reconfigurable and ultra-compact nonlinear devices operating in the MWIR.

Time-domain terahertz compressive imaging

We present an implementation of the single-pixel imaging approach into a terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) system. We demonstrate the indirect coherent reconstruction of THz temporal waveforms at each spatial position of an object, without the need of mechanical raster-scanning. First, we exploit such temporal information to realize (far-field) time-of-flight images. In addition, as a proof of concept, we apply a typical compressive sensing algorithm to demonstrate image reconstruction with less than 50% of the total required measurements. Finally, the access to frequency domain is also demonstrated by reconstructing spectral images of an object featuring an absorption line in the THz range. The combination of single-pixel imaging with compressive sensing algorithms allows to reduce both complexity and acquisition time of current THz-TDS imaging systems.

CMOS-compatible, multiplexed source of heralded photon pairs: towards integrated quantum combs

We report an integrated photon pair source based on a CMOS-compatible microring resonator that generates multiple, simultaneous, and independent photon pairs at different wavelengths in a frequency comb compatible with fiber communication wavelength division multiplexing channels (200 GHz channel separation) and with a linewidth that is compatible with quantum memories (110 MHz). It operates in a self-locked pump configuration, avoiding the need for active stabilization, making it extremely robust even at very low power levels.

Novel architecture for ultra-stable micro-ring resonator based optical frequency combs

We report a novel geometry for OPOs based on nonlinear microcavity resonators. This approach relies on a self-locked scheme that enables OPO emission without the need for thermal locking of the pump laser to the microcavity resonance. By exploiting a CMOS-compatible microring resonator, we achieve oscillation with a complete absence of shutting down, or self-terminating behavior, a very common occurrence in externally pumped OPOs. Further, this scheme consistently produces very wide bandwidth (>300nm, limited by our experimental set-up) combs that oscillate at a spacing of the FSR of the micro cavity resonance.

Photonic Integrated Devices for Nonlinear Optics

We review our recent progresses on frequency conversion in integrated devices, focusing primarily on experiments based on strip-loaded and quantum-well intermixed AlGaAs waveguides, and on CMOS-compatible high-index doped silica glass waveguides. The former includes both second- and third-order interactions, demonstrating wavelength conversion by tunable difference-frequency generation over a bandwidth of more than nm, as well as broadband self-phase modulation and tunable four-wave mixing. The latter includes four-wave mixing using low-power continuous-wave light in microring resonators as well as hyper-parametric oscillation in a high quality factor resonator, towards the realization of an integrated multiple wavelength source with important applications for telecommunications, spectroscopy, and metrology.

Nonlinear imaging and 3D-mapping of terahertz fields with Kerr media

We investigate the spatially and temporally resolved four-wave mixing of terahertz fields and optical pulses in large band-gap dielectrics, such as diamond. We show that it is possible to perform beam profiling and space-time resolved mapping of terahertz fields with sub-wavelength THz resolution by encoding the spatial information into an optical signal, which can then be recorded by a standard CCD camera.
